Pune: Shardul Thakur bagged a five-wicket haul as Mumbai clinched the Ranji Trophy, defeating Saurashtra by an innings and 21 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Friday.

This is Mumbai’s 41st Ranji Trophy title.

Thakur had figures of 5/26 as Mumbai bundled Saurashtra out for 155 runs in their second innings on the third day of the five-day match. The other Mumbai pacers also did well on a helpful pitch, with Balwinder Sandhu (2/21), Dhawal Kulkarni (2/34) and Abhishek Nayar (1/26) among the wickets.

Earlier, starting at the overnight score of 262/8, Mumbai rode on some fine batting by Siddesh Lad (88) and lower-order heroics by Sandhu (34 not out) before being all out for 371 in their first innings, a lead of 136 runs. Saurashtra had scored 235 in their first innings.

Defending champs Karnataka knocked out of Ranji Trophy

December 4, 2015 by Nasheman

Robin Uthappa

Pune: Defending champions Karnataka crashed out of the Ranji Trophy after losing to Maharashtra by 53 runs in their final league match of the season here today.

Karnataka, resuming the day at 61/1, ended their second innings at 239 all out after having set a 293-run target. The winners of the prestigious competition for the last two years were on the backfoot ever since their first innings folded up for 180, in reply to Maharashtra’s 212.

Maharashtra were anyway not in the race for the quarterfinals but they certainly played party poopers to Karnataka, who finished fifth in the points table with two wins, a loss and five draws from eight games. The home team finished seventh with a win, couple of losses and five draws in eight games.

Vidarbha, Bengal, Assam qualified from Group A with 29, 28 and 26 points respectively.
The famed Karnataka batting failed to deliver in the crunch situation and there was not much positive apart from the contributions from Robin Uthappa (61) and wicket-keeper CM Gautam (65 not out), who ran out of partners in the end.

Maharashtra medium pacers Anupam Sanklecha and Nikit Dhumal did the maximum damage, snaring up four and five wickets respectively.

Brief scores:

Maharashtra 212 and 260
Karnataka 180 and 239 all out in 72 overs (Robin Uthappa 61, CM Gautam 65 not out; Anupam Sanklecha 4/64, Nikit Dhumal 5/78).

Ranji Trophy: Mumbai score 370/2 on opening day against Gujarat

December 1, 2015 by Nasheman

Unbeaten tons from young guns Akhil Herwadkar and Suryakumar Yadav helped Mumbai pile up 370 for 2 on day one.

Mumbai: Mumbai rode on unbeaten centuries from Akhil Herwadkar and Suryakumar Yadav to pile up 370 for 2 on day one of their Group B Ranji Trophy game against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Gujarat’s hopes of securing at least the first innings lead to enhance their hopes of advancing to the quarters took a beating as the hosts, surprisingly asked to bat first by visiting team captain Parthiv Patel, scored at more than four an over to grab the advantage.

Left-handed opener Herwadkar remained unconquered at the end of the day with a patient knock of 143 off 257 balls, inclusive of 16 fours and a six.

He was lucky to be let off twice by wicket keeper and rival captain Patel before he reached 40s.

Yadav, at the other end, stroked his way to 103 not out off 159 balls – studded with 3 sixes and 9 fours.

The third wicket duo, who joined forces at the fall of one-down batsman Shreyas Iyer (75 off 69 balls with 10 fours and a six), had added 196 runs before stumps.

Earlier, put in to bat the home team – already assured of a berth in the last eight – raced to 74 before losing opener Jay Bista, edging left arm R P Singh to ‘keeper Patel, for a breezy knock of 44 that included six hits to the fence.

The ever-aggressive Iyer and Herwadkar then came together to stitch a partnership of 100 runs before the former lost patience and his wicket. In trying to glide Rush Kalaria over the wicket keeper’s head he managed only an edge to Parthiv.

To make things worse, the Gujarat captain let off Herwadkar when on 12, a difficult leg-side catch, and a regulation stumping when the left hander (39) rushed out to the first ball from left- arm spinner Axar Patel and got beaten.

Taking full advantage of these reprieves, Herwadkar reached his half century in 101 balls. He was more aggressive later and reached his second ton of the season in 196 balls.

Yadav, after the fall of Iyer, stroked his way to his half century before tea in 69 balls and then slowed down a bit to complete his hundred in 148 balls.

Brief scores: Mumbai 370 for 2 (A Herwadkar not out 143, J Bista 44, S Iyer 75, S Yadav not out 103)

Rayudu helps Baroda reach 242/5 on Day 1

Ambati Rayudu (70) and Aditya Waghmode (56) cracked twin half-centuries as Baroda reached 242 for 5 in their first innings against Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of a Group B Ranji Trophy match.

Rayudu’s 184-ball unbeaten innings was studded with seven boundaries and a six, while Waghmode hit six fours and a six during his 113 ball stay at the Greater Noida Sports Complex G round here.

At the draw of stumps, Rayudu was at the crease and giving him company was Irfan Pathan (18).

Brief Scores: Baroda 242 for 5 in 83 overs (A Rayudu 70; Praveen Kumar 2/34)

Ranji Trophy: Karnataka pull off 2nd outright Ranji win against Odisha

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

stuart-binny

Mysuru: Karnataka registered their second outright win, beating Odisha by an innings and 64 runs on the fourth and final day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match.

With this win Karnataka secured seven points, and are among the top contenders to qualify for the knockout stage with 21 points to their credit.

Stuart Binny and Shreyas Gopal, ably supported by Vinay Kumar, helped Karnataka skittle out Odisha for 104 runs in their second innings under 37 overs. Binny claimed four wickets for 34 runs and Gopal bagged three wickets for 43 runs, while Kumar ended with two for seven off seven overs and Udit Patel picked up one wicket. Batting first, Odisha put on 232 all out in their first innings with Govinda Poddar scoring 153 runs after he had smashed 15 boundaries and a six off 230 balls.

In reply, Karnataka declared their first innings at 400 for nine after India discard Robin Uthappa scored his second century of the season with a superb 148 runs. He had scored his first ton against Rajasthan in the previous match. Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair, also came good with their bat, scoring 78 and 73 runs, respectively.

Nair and Uthappa took the game away from Odisha’s hands when they stitched a 169-run partnership for fourth wicket and helped hosts post 168-run first innings lead. Resuming at the overnight score of zero for one, Odisha started on a disastrous note, losing first innings centurion Poddar, who was caught by Abhishek Reddy off Kumar for seven. Binny turned the tide completely in Karnataka’s favour after he claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries, first he sent back Nataraj Behera (19) and then Ranjit Singh for a naught.

After the fall of Singh, no batsman held the crease and with Karnataka bowlers, especially Binny and Gopal, wrecking havoc.
Anurag Sarangi was the top scorer for Odisha with 44 runs with six boundaries, scored off 75 balls. To the dismay of Odisha, they lost four batsmen — Rajesh Dhuper, Singh, Biplab Samanataray and Basant Mohanty — without opening an account.

Ranji Trophy: Ugly scene at Kotla as Gambhir, Tiwary nearly exchange blows

October 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Gambhir-Tiwary

New Delhi: There were ugly scenes at Feroz Shah Kotla ground as rival captains Gautam Gambhir and Manoj Tiwary nearly came to exchanging blows during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Bengal, here on Saturday.

Situation came to such a pass that umpire K Srinath had to come between the two players as Gambhir moved towards Tiwary to hit him and he also came charging at the Delhi skipper.

In fact in an unprecedented ugly gesture, Gambhir even pushed umpire Srinath, who was trying to get him out of the way to hit Tiwary.
Touching umpire is a grave offence in cricket, which could invite a ban.

The incident happened in 7.1 over when Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee got out of Manan Sharma’s bowling and Tiwary came in to bat at No. 4 wearing a cap.

Tiwary first took guard and was about to take strike. But he stopped the bowler and signalled at the dressing room to bring his helmet as a pacer was operating from the other end.

Delhi players felt that it was a deliberate time wasting tactic.

Manan ticked off Manoj and he told him to lay off. All of a sudden, Gambhir, at first slip, got into the action and started abusing the Bengal skipper, who then retaliated.

Suddenly all hell broke loose as Gambhir said: “Shaam ko mil tujhe maroonga (Meet me in the evening, I will hit you). And Tiwary retorted, saying: “Shaam kya abhi bahar chal (Why wait till evening, let’s go out and settle it now”).

Umpire Srinath then sprinted from bowler’s end.

Gambhir with his fists raised charged towards Tiwary, who was also not ready to back down. Umpire Srinath came in the middle, but Gambhir to everyone’s horror pushed the umpire trying to get him out of the way.

Manoj was then seen shouting at Gambhir, saying: “Did I tell you anything? Why did you have to come in between.”

Both Tiwary and Gambhir will be summoned by the match referee Valmick Buch.

Ranji Trophy: Wasim Jaffer leads Vidarbha’s fightback against Karnataka

October 17, 2015 by Nasheman

Wasim Jaffer and Ganesh Satish hit well-paced half centuries to lead Vidarbha’s reply to Karnataka’s first innings score of 350. Vidarbha reached 172 for two in 72 overs.

Wasim Jaffer scored 68 for Vidarbha against Karnataka on Friday.

Wasim Jaffer scored 68 for Vidarbha against Karnataka on Friday.

Bengaluru: Youngster Ganesh Satish and veteran Wasim Jaffer crafted well-paced half centuries to lead Vidarbha’s reply to Karnataka’s first innings score of 350 on the second day of their four-day Group A Ranji Trophy match at Chinnaswamy stadium here on Friday.

The former Mumbaikar, Jaffer, smashed a superb 68 runs while Satish remained unbeaten on 81 as Vidarbha reached 172 for two in 72 overs.

When the stumps were drawn, Satish and skipper Subramanium Badrinath were at the crease with Vidarbha still trailing Karnataka by 178 runs with eight wickets in hand.

Satish showed lot of patience and grit to build a 117-run partnership for the second wicket and brought the team back on the track after they had lost their first wicket on three in the very first over of Abhimanyu Mithun.

Satish, who migrated to Vidarbha because of difficulty in cementing a place in the defending champions’ side, and Jaffer, grinded the Karnataka bowlers and did not allow them to dominate them by grafting runs in a systematic manner.

The duo remained unseparated between lunch and tea, despite some loud appeals as the hosts went wicketless in the second session.

“There were some close calls, but things can go against us. Some things are not in our hands,” Shreyas Gopal said.

In the very second over after tea, Jaffer trying to change gears ended up giving a catch at mid-on to Karun Nair off left-arm spinner Jagadeesh Suchith. The flamboyant former Indian opener cracked ten boundaries in his 120-ball 68 runs.

“I don’t think Wasim Bhai threw away his wicket, it was just that he might have wanted to change the gear to get quick runs,” Satish told reporters after the day’s play.

After the fall of Jaffer, Vidarbha tightened their screws and made it difficult for the visitors to score runs. Satish and captain Subramanium Badrinath also did not want to lose further wickets as they dug their heels to end the day on a positive note.

“After the fall of Wasim Bhai’s wicket, it was really very difficult for us to score runs because of the close-in fielding. I and Badri decided to stay at the wicket and look for small partnerships to frustrate the home bowlers,” said Satish, who could muster 52 runs after tea with Badrinath.

Asked whether the team is planning to go for an outright victory and settle down for first innings points, Satish said, “We will think of it once we get past their total. Right now, we are focusing on batting.”

For Karnataka, Mithun and Suchith picked one wicket each and Vinay Kumar, S Aravind and Gopal — all went wicketless.

Resuming their overnight score of 298-6, Karnataka were bundled out for 350 runs in 102.4 overs, after wicket-keeper batsman Chidambaram Gautam scored 30 and Vinay 22.

Vidarbha pacer Ravi Thakur ended the innings, taking four wickets.

Ranji Trophy: Karnataka Vs Vidarbha in Bengaluru

October 15, 2015 by Nasheman

KL Rahul has returned to Karnataka side after recovering from injury.

KL Rahul has returned to Karnataka side after recovering from injury.

Bengaluru: KL Rahul and Karun Nair would look to put up impressive show before the national selectors meet to pick the Indian Test squad for the South Africa series, as Karnataka take on Vidarbha in a Group A Ranji Trophy.

Rahul, who is making a comeback after recovering from the quadriceps strain that he had sustained during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August, will be desperate to make to mark.

He has played a stellar role in Karnataka’s success story in last two seasons. Last year, he notched up 838 runs from five matches and became the first Karnataka batsman to score a triple century in the domestic circuit.

The 23-year-old will look to continue the success story this season too, besides returning to the Indian team. Karun, who was recently called up as a reserve for the India Test team against Sri Lanka, would want to carry forward his form that he showed against Bengal in the last match.

He made a mincemeat of Bengal bowling with a crushing century, which put Karnataka in the driver’s seat. Shishir Bhavane (119) and bowling-allrounder Shreyas Gopal (139) will also be high on confidence after their fine tons that helped Karnataka amass 537 runs for nine declared.

Also one of last season’s top scorers Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey will be eager to showcase their skills. The Vinay Kumar-led bowling attack has been consistent with its ability to take wickets in regular intervals.

Kumar and HS Sharath shared seven wickets between them in Bengal’s first innings, forcing them to follow on in the last game. On the other hand, Vidarbha will look to put behind their dismal performance against Delhi, which had mauled them after Ishant Sharma ran through their innings.

After failing miserably in the last match, stalwarts Wasim Jaffer and Subramanium Badrinath would like to showcase their talents, which they had been doing for their erstwhile Mumbai and Tamil Nadu, respectively.

A Shanware, who scored a brilliant 119 against Odisha in their opening match, and Ganesh Sathish, who notched up a half century so far, will also like to contribute with their bats.

A consistent run-maker for the past four seasons, Shalabh Shrivastava would also want to bury the disappointing performances of the last two matches.

Umesh Yadav is away on national duty and it is a big loss for Vidarbha. His new ball partner Shreekant Wagh, meanwhile, has been growing in stature in the last three seasons.

The team will expect the pace duo of Ravi Thakur and Swapnil Bandiwar to shine. They did a good job last year. Off-spinner Akshay Wakhare, who broke the 50-year-old record of best bowling figures in a match for Vidarbha, enjoys role of lead spinner and would like to make his presence felt.

Squads

Karnataka: R Vinay Kumar (captain), CM Gautam (vice-captain and wicketkeeper), R Samarth, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair, Shishir Bhavane, Shreyas Gopal, J Suchith, A Mithun, HS Sharath, Udit B Patel, S Aarvind, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul.

Vidarbha: Subramanium Badrinath (captain), Ganesh Satish, Wasim Jaffer, Shalabh Shrivastava, Swapnil Bandiwar, Ravi Thakur, Amol Ubarhande, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Ravi Jangid, Aditya Sarwate, Aditya Shanware, Shreekant Wagh, Akshay Wakhare, Dharmendra Ahlawat, Amol Jungade.

Karnataka overwhelm Tamil Nadu to retain Ranji title

March 12, 2015 by Nasheman

ranjii

Mumbai: Karnataka successfully defended their Ranji Trophy title in emphatic style as they trounced Tamil Nadu by an innings and 217 runs in the final at the Wankhede Stadium here on Thursday.

Tottering at 113 for three overnight in their second innings after conceding a 628-run first innings lead, Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 411 runs to add to their first innings score of 134.

Baba Aparajith (68) and Vijay Shankar (103) put up a brave fight. After Aparajith’s departure with the scoreboard reading 191/4, it was veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik who tried steadying the sinking Tamil Nadu ship.

Right-hander Karthik notched up a 115-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Shankar and was fluent in his stroke-making.

But then it was Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar (2/43) who broke the partnership getting rid of Shankar holding onto a return catch.

Karthik continued in his merry ways, but the batters around him fell prey to Shreyas Gopal’s (4/126) spin and Sreenath Aravind’s (2/52) movement and pace.

Earlier in the match, Karnataka had put on a monumental total of 762 runs in their first innings. Right-hand middle-order batsman Karun Nair scored 328 — the highest in a Ranji Trophy final in the 92-year history of the country’s premier domestic cricket tournament.

Nair, 23, went past Baroda batsman Gul Mohammad’s 319 made against Holkar in the 1946-47 season final. Nair got good support from India Test Opener Lokesh Rahul (188) and the duo forged a 384-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Skipper R. Vinay Kumar also scored a ton (105) to ensure they amassed a monumental total of 762 all out. Vinay became the first captain to pick up a five-wicket haul and score a century in a Ranji final. He was only the second cricketer to achieve the feat after Vijay Hazare’s heroics in 1946-47 final.

After conceding the mammoth lead, Tamil Nadu went down by an innings and 217 runs, allowing Karnataka to lay their hands on their second consecutive and eighth Ranji Trophy title.

“It is a big moment for us. I would like to thank all the players, they have worked hard to achieve this milestone. I am very happy with my own performance,” skipper Vinay said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Ultimately, winning the Ranji Trophy is important. As I said last year, we have a good bunch of players. If we keep performing we will dominate the Indian domestic circuit. Next we will play the Irani Trophy and will try to win that.”

Losing captain Abhinav Mukund said: “We really did well in the first day. We could have batted better, but its history now. Rahul and Karun Nair took the game away from us.”

Mukund, however, was satisfied with the performance throughout the season.

“It has been a great season. After a poor start we have made to the finals. We will go back to the drawing board. We have competed well, I made around 800 runs. I could have carried on, but we ran into a good side.”

Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 134 all out, 411 all out (Dinesh Karthik 120, Vijay Shankar 103; Shreyas Gopal 4/126; Vinay Kumar 2/43)) lose to Karnataka 762 all out. Karnataka win by an innings and 217 runs.

Karnataka in Ranji final after 112-run win

Seventy minutes, 14.1 overs. That’s all it took for Karnataka to wrap up the Mumbai tail and take one step closer to defending their Ranji Trophy title.

Mumbai started the penultimate day of the semi-final at 277 for 6, 168 runs behind the target of 445. Their best hope of an outside chance to chase down the target was for one of the bowlers to bat with Siddhesh Lad, the specialist overnight batsman. However, Abhimanyu Mithun, S Aravind and Shreyas Gopal picked a wicket each to complete a convincing 112-run victory, their second successive win against Mumbai at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Lad, who resumed batting on 41, took the initiative on the fourth morning while Balwinder Singh Sandhu tried to occupy one end of the crease. Sandhu, however, was adjudged leg before off Mithun following a doubtful decision. The fuller, incoming delivery had taken a thick edge off his bat on to the pads, but the umpire Vineet Kulkarni ruled in favour of the bowler. The wicket was Mithun’s fourth of the innings

After Shardul Thakur survived the initial burst, captain Vinay Kumar brought Shreyas Gopal in his place. The legspinner struck with his second ball, getting an edge off Thakur’s willow straight into Vinay’s palms at slip.

Lad, who stretched his innings to 74, was left with too much to do and the end came when Aravind bowled a gem to extract an edge off his bat soon after the drinks break. With the target being completely out of reach, Mumbai opted not to play allrounder Abhishek Nayar, who had struggled while batting out 12 overs on the third evening. Nayar had suffered a concussive head injury on the first day. The defending champions will now get an extra rest day before heading to Mumbai for the final.

Ranji Trophy: 22 wickets fall on day one as Karnataka and Mumbai slug it out in semis

February 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Vinay Kumar (centre) rattled the Mumbai batting on Day 1.

Vinay Kumar (centre) rattled the Mumbai batting on Day 1.

Bengaluru: Karnataka captain R Vinay Kumar led from the front with a six-wicket haul that sent Mumbai crashing to a lowly 44 in their first innings on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy semi-final, which saw 21 wickets fall, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Wednesday.

Except for Shreyas Iyer, who scored 15, and Suryakumar Yadav (12), no other Mumbai batsmen got into double digit scores, as the 40-time champions registered their second lowest total in the history of the Ranji Trophy, with Vinay claiming six for 20 in eight overs. The resurgent Mumbai side’s total was only better than their lowest score of 42 all out against Gujarat in the 1977-78 season.

With a lead of 158 runs, Karnataka were at the receiving end in their second essay, ending the day on 10 for 2 from five overs.

Robin Uthappa (4), who top-scored with 68 in the first innings, and K L Rahul (2) were the batsmen dismissed.

Earlier, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur took four wickets as Karnataka were dismissed for 202 in their first innings after electing to bat first.

However, the defending champions struck back with a vengeance to claim a 158-run first innings lead.

For Mumbai, all-rounder Abhishek Nayar was unable to bat because of an injury sustained when on the field, after which he was taken to hospital.

Vinay gave Karnataka the perfect start as he struck with the second ball of the innings, getting opener Akhil Herwadkar leg before wicket for a duck.

Iyer attempted to steady the ship for a few overs before he was trapped leg before wicket by Abhimanyu Mithun.

India discard Vinay then took over the show, running through Mumbai’s middle order.

Mumbai captain Aditya Tare was caught behind for nine and Siddhesh Lad was caught at square leg off the very next delivery for a duck, in the seventh over of the innings.

Nikhil Patil (2) and Wilkin Mota (0) also fell off successive deliveries, giving Vinay his five-wicket haul.

Shardul had a wild swing against Vinay but was caught by KL Rahul for six before left-hander Harmeet Singh was leg before wicket by Arvind Sreenath in the next over for a duck. Sreenath also had Surya Kumar Yadav caught in the deep for 12.

Earlier, the in-form Thakur claimed four for 61, while Wilkin Mota took two for 18 as Karnataka collapsed after the dismissal of opener Robin Uthappa, who stroked a fluent 68, laced with 10 fours and a six.

Karun Nair was left stranded on 49, while Manish Pandey made 34 but the rest of the batsman failed to contribute with the bat for the defending champions.

India opener Rahul perished early when he pulled a short ball from Thakur straight into the hands of the fielder on the fine leg fence for 15 and R Samarth was run-out for a duck as the hosts slipped to 34 for two.

Uthappa and Pandey rallied Karnataka with a 81-run stand for the third wicket but the former’s dismissal saw Karnataka lose their way as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.
