Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala Monday lauded the Congress-led state government for launching many welfare schemes and public services like Mobile One project across the state on the occasion of 66th Republic Day.

In a brief address on this special occasion, Governor Vala hoisted the national flag and said that the state government has made remarkable progress in many fields, especially in public services, welfare and development schemes.

“The Mobile One project, launched to provide a number of services to the public, has accomplished a rare feat. Similarly, health scheme brought down infant mortality and the ‘Ksheera Baghya’ scheme, in which free milk is distributed among schoolchildren thrice a week, has reduced malnutrition among them,” he said.

The governor also commended the state government for implementing drinking water projects in drought-prone villages during this fiscal (2014-15).

“We have to strive hard to take our nation forward on the development path and to make the mantra — ‘Progress of Karnataka is for the country’s progress’ meaningful,” Vala said, urging the public to take a pledge for ensuring Swachh Bharat (clean India) through Swachh Karnataka (clean Karnataka).

Alluding to Swami Vivekananda’s words – You can give bread to a man and feed for a day but it is better to teach him to earn bread – Governor Vala exhorted the people to imbibe Vivekananda’s ideologoy.

Noting that Karnataka holds special significance in the country due to the strides it has made in the fields like software, biotech, aeronautics, defence, research, space and innovation, the governor said though people’s languages and attires vary from state to state, India has one identity.

“With this feeling (of oneness), we should rise above differences of religion, caste, colour and communities and march ahead on building the nation strong,” he noted.

Earlier, pomp and pageantry marked the Republic Day celebrations where the governor took salute during the parade amid tight security.

An air force helicopter showered rose petals at the podium, where Governor Vala, Chief Minister Siddarmaiah and other dignitaries were seated.

About 8,000 people, including children, who congregated on this occasion, cheered the services personnel and other participants during the march past and show of strength.

About 2,500 police personnel had been deployed for a fool-proof security.

Police across the city were also on high alert as part of the security drill with reinforcements at vital installations and in sensitive (VIP) areas.

About 40 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed in and around the venue to monitor movement of people, participants and dignitaries.

Another Bodo militant wanted by Assam police held in Bengaluru

January 27, 2015 by Nasheman

dv563013

Bengaluru: Another NDFB(S) militant, wanted in connection with the violence in Assam in December last year, was arrested here today, police said.

27-year old Sanju Bordoloi, the organising secretary of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit), was arrested from his hideout in the Electronic City based on specific inputs.

He is the second NDFB(S) militant to be arrested here since last week after the detention of Birkhang Basumatary, also allegedly involved in the Assam violence, on January 23.

“City Crime Branch arrested Sanju Bordoloi, son of Dim Wser Bordoloi, of Kamrup District in Assam, from Electronic City Police Station limits based on specific inputs,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Goel said in a statement here.

Bordoloi was hiding here after participating in the recent massacre, he said, adding that the militant admitted that he was the organising secretary of NDFB(S) and trained in Bangladesh in AK-series of weapons.

The miltants had launched an attack on adivasis in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts on December 23 following which there was retaliatory violence and police firing resulting in the killing of 81 people.

Goel also said the police are coordinating with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Assam Police to hand him over to them.

“The militant is presently kept at the Electronics City police station,” he added.

Basumatary alias Bhutur, a native of Chirang in Assam, had already been handed over to Assam police.

Bengal woman tied naked to tree, beaten; opposition slams Mamata

January 27, 2015 by Nasheman

woman-tied-beatenKolkata: A woman in West Bengal Monday alleged that she was tied naked to a tree, beaten and branded over allegations of stealing. A couple were arrested but got bail which prompted the opposition to accuse the Mamata Banerjee government of “patronising criminals”.

Police Monday arrested a man and his wife for the incident that occurred Sunday in Kultoli in Baruipur subdivision of South 24 Parganas district. However, both the accused were granted bail by a court.

“I was accused of stealing and a gang lead by Sanjib Maiti tied me naked to a tree and beat me with sticks. They also branded me with hot metal,” said the woman who later filed a police complaint.

Baruipur sub-divisional police officer Deepak Sarkar said Maiti and his wife were arrested, but granted bail by a court.

While the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) alleged the involvement of Trinamool Congress activists, the Congress and the BJP slammed the state administration over the accused getting bail.

“After tying her naked to a tree, they subjected her to indescribable atrocities. She was subjected to this brutality only just because she is a CPI-M supporter. Trinamool goons have been attacking our people for long. We demand the arrests of all the perpetrators,” former minister and CPI-M leader Kanti Ganguly said after visiting the woman.

However, Trinamool’s Kultoli block president Gopal Majhi denied the allegations.

“The entire thing has been staged by the CPI-M and their leader (Ganguly) is trying to frame us and malign the Trinamool,” he said.

Actress-turned-politician Rupa Ganguly, who recently joined Bharatiya Janata Party, slammed Chief Minister Banerjee for the rise in crimes against women in the state.

“When the chief minister herself described rape as a ‘petty matter’, then such crimes are bound to happen. It’s a shame that a state headed by a woman CM has been hitting the headlines for crime against woman,” said the actress, who gained cult popularity for playing Draupadi in the television series “Mahabharat”.

Former state Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya too attacked the administration for pressing lighter charges against the two accused.

“Not a single day passes when attacks on women are not taking place. Instead of taking strict action, the administration is actually encouraging criminals by either not taking any action or by pressing lighter charges,” said Bhattacharya.

The incident comes days after a woman in Birbhum district was tortured and nettle leaves rubbed into her private parts allegedly by a police team to extract information about her nephew – a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader wanted for his alleged involvement in a political clash.

A National Commission for Women team, headed by chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Saturday recorded the Birbhum woman’s statement and assured of taking action in the matter.

Cartoonist R K Laxman, creator of 'Common Man', passes away

January 27, 2015 by Nasheman

R K Laxman

Pune: Eminent cartoonist R K Laxman, who immortalised the hapless ‘Common Man’ with his devastating swipes at politicians but without malice, died here today at a private hospital at the age of 94 after suffering multi-organ failure.

“Laxman passed away at 6.50 PM,” Dr Sameer Jog of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, said.

Creator of ubiquitous mute spectator ‘Common Man’, Laxman was admitted to the hospital on January 17 for urinary infection. He suffered multi-organ failure and was put on ventilator.

Laxman, brother of late novelist R.K. Narayan, is survived by writer wife Kamala, retired journalist son Srinivas and daughter-in-law Usha.

His legendary spell on the Indian newspaper reader was cast after joining the Times Of India (TOI). His front page pocket cartoon “You said it” started in 1951, unleashing his iconic ” common man”, a silent witness to the shenanigans of politicians who were supposed to realise his dreams, hopes and aspirations but betrayed him on most occasions.

His association with TOI continued through the six decades even as he got back to work after recovering from a paralytic stroke in 2003 that incapacitated his left side.

A Padma Vibhushan, Laxman also won the Magsaysay award in 1984 for journalism, literature and creative communication arts.

Condoling his demise, noted cartoonists described him as outstanding, towering figure who always had his finger on the pulse of the nation.

“India will miss you R K Laxman. We are grateful top you for adding the much needed humour in our lives and always bringing smiles on our faces,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

According to the doctors, he had been bed-ridden for many months, needed caregiver support for his routine activities and suffered from diabetes, hypertension and diabetic nephropathy.

He was under close observation of team of intensivists in Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital’s ICU for the last nine days. There were ups and downs in his condition, but it started deteriorating since last evening, and he suffered a cardiac arrest this evening.

The funeral would be conducted tomorrow morning, Srinivas told PTI.

Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Laxman, son of a school teacher, rose to become India’s best known political cartoonist while his ubiquitous ‘common man’ became an icon in himself. As the news of his demise broke, his admirers were seen making a beeline at the the statue of ‘Common Man’ in Worli in Mumbai.

Born in Mysore on October 24, 1921, Laxman was one of the seven siblings, including elder brother and eminent novelist, the late R K Narayan.

Ironically enough, the young Laxman had to face rejection from the Mumbai’s J J School of Arts when he applied there for admission, and subsequently graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from University of Mysore even as he continued with freelancing and contributed cartoons to Blitz, Swarajya.

While at college, Laxman started illustrating R K Narayan’s short stories in The Hindu and drawing political cartoons for local newspapers.

He took up his first full time job as a political cartoonist at Mumbai’s Free Press Journal.

Among other honours bestowed on him are B D Goenka award-Indian Express, Durga Ratan Gold medal- Hindustan Times and Padma Bhushan.

For the last several years he had settled down in Pune. “He was the original God of cartooning,” cartoonist Ajit Ninan said about Laxman, adding that all the metaphors that emanated from his hand and mind was unmatchable.

Another noted cartoonist Sudhar Dar said Laxman always had his finger on the pulse of the nation.

Cartoonist Hemant Morparia said, “He was a towering figure. He outlived all his contemporaries. I assume his cartoons will in fact outlive him for a very long time.”

Sudhir Tailang, another member of the fraternity, said “Laxman is an institution” who created “respect for the job of cartoonists”

'Make in India' tableau steals the show in Republic Day parade

January 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Make in India tableau

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Republic Day parade chief guest US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at their arrival at the saluting dais at Rajpath.

Religion can’t be made cause of conflict, says President; stresses on tolerance on Republic Day

January 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Republic Day Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi: Asserting that religion cannot be made a cause of conflict, President Pranab Mukherjee today said “tolerance” and promotion of goodwill between diverse communities needs to be preserved with “utmost care and vigilance”.

In his address to the nation on the eve of 66th Republic Day, the President quoted Mahatma Gandhi, “religion is a force for unity” and said, “we cannot make it a cause of conflict” as wisdom of India always teaches “unity is strength, dominance is weakness.”

He said the Constitution is the holy book of democracy and a “lodestar” for the socio-economic transformation of an India whose civilization has celebrated pluralism, advocated tolerance and promoted goodwill between diverse communities.

“These values, however, need to be preserved with utmost care and vigilance,” he said.

The comments of the President came at a time when some right wing parties have been sparking one controversy after another by raising issues like ‘ghar wapsi’, eulogiusing Nathuram Godse, pressing for having 10 kids for increasing Hindu population and some ministers making inappropriate comments about minorities.

The freedom inherent in democracy sometimes generates an unhappy by-product when political discourse becomes a “competition in hysteria that is abhorrent to our traditional ethos. The violence of the tongue cuts and wounds people’s hearts,” Mukherjee said.

On the issue of India being termed as a “soft power”, he said, “the most powerful example of India’s soft power, in an international environment where so many countries are sinking into the morass of theocratic violence, lies in our definition of the relationship between faith and polity.

“We have always reposed our trust in faith-equality where every faith is equal before the law and every culture blends into another to create a positive dynamic,” the President said.

Speaking about the menace of terrorism, Mukherjee made a veiled reference about Pakistan saying that the country’s “adversaries” will stop at nothing to disrupt India’s progress.

The multi-nation conflict has converted boundaries into “bloodlines, and turned terrorism into an industry of evil.

“Terrorism and violence are seeping across our borders. While peace, non-violence and good neighbourly intentions should remain the fundamentals of our foreign policy, we cannot afford to be complacent about adversaries who will stop at nothing to disrupt our progress towards a prosperous and equitable India,” he said.

Mukherjee said the country had the strength, confidence and determination to defeat architects of “this war against our people.

“Repeated violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control and terrorist attacks must get an integrated response through incisive diplomacy and impregnable security mechanisms. The world must join India in fighting the menace of terrorism,” he said.

On the economic issue, the President said 2015 is a year of hope and key economic indicators provide for “much optimism”.

He said five per cent plus growth rates each in the first two quarter of the current fiscal is “healthy sign for an early reversion to the high growth trajectory of 7-8 per cent.

Highlighting Gandhi’s vision, Mukherjee said the call for ‘Purna Swaraj’ was given under his leadership at Congress conclave in January 26, 1929. He said Gandhi started celebrating January 26, 1930 as Independence Day.

“From then on, the Nation took a pledge on this day every year to carry on the freedom struggle till we attained it,” Mukherjee said.

The President said the framework of a Constitution, which was charted in 1950, two years after his martyrdom, that has made India a role model for today’s world, was constructed out of Gandhi’s philosophy.

He said Constitution’s essence lay in four principles: democracy; freedom of faith; gender equality; and an economic upsurge for those trapped in the curse of dire poverty which were made Constitutional obligations.

The country’s resolve to eliminate poverty through inclusive development has to be a step in the direction of Gandhi talisman for the country’s rulers which said whenever you are in doubt…recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself…will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?, he said.

The President said we must strive for the highest quality in our educational institutions so that we can take our place, within a visible future, among the knowledge leaders of the 21st century.

He also wanted that special stress be laid on the culture of books and reading, which takes knowledge beyond the classroom and frees imagination from stress of the immediate and the utilitarian.

“We must be a creative people, nourished by innumerable, interlinked rivers of ideas,” he said.

The youth must lead the way to mastery of technology and communication in a universe where the cloud has become a library without frontiers, and vast opportunity awaits within the computer in your palm. “The 21st century is within India’s grasp.” the President said.
