Subramanian Swamy to be next vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University?

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

subramanian swamy

New Delhi: HRD Ministry is believed to have offered the post of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice chancellor to BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, but he has put some conditions before accepting the coveted post.

It is learnt that HRD Minister Smriti Irani spoke to Swamy about the offer. However, there was no official communication from the Ministry.

It also remained unclear what riders the BJP leader has placed before the Ministry for accepting the offer.

Interestingly, the development comes even before the Union Ministry is to finalise the search-cum-selection committee for selecting the new VC. The current VC S K Sopory is set to retire in January next year.

As per the rules, a panel of names selected by the committee is sent to the President ( who is Visitor of the central varsities) by the HRD Ministry before the announcement of the new VC. The advertisements for inviting applications from the interested candidates for appointment of the new VC was given in August this year.

Rajdeep Sardesai replies to Fadnavis letter on meat ban and Maria transfer

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Sardesai takes issue with being called a ‘leftist’ and ‘pseudo-secular’ by the Maharashtra chief minister.

Rajdeep Sardesai Fadnavis

by Rajdeep Sardesai

On September 18, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai wrote an open letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, criticising his government for a confusing year of what he calls “misplaced priorities.” On Tuesday, Fadnavis decided to reply with an open letter of his own, calling Sardesai’s letter an example of a misinformed media bashing the government, “with an agenda.”

On Wednesday, Sardesai responded to the chief minister’s letter on his website. Here is the full text.

Dear Devendraji,

Firstly, I wish to thank you for replying to my open letter and creating space for a public debate. This is a sign of a truly healthy democracy and is rare for a politician in this day and age. I truly appreciate that a big politician chooses to reply to a humble columnist: doesn’t happen too often in an age where the media is a soft target. However, while I do not wish this to become a tu tu main main, I must reserve the right to reply.

Sir, there are four basic issues that I raised in my original letter to which you have responded. Firstly, the meat and beef ban in Maharashtra. On the beef ban, the fact is that your government has imposed a statewide ban in a unilateral manner with no attempt to engage with the stakeholders. The results are there for all to see. Thousands of people associated with the cattle trade have overnight been rendered unemployed. They are all citizens of this country, many of whom voted for you in the last election. I haven’t heard a word of empathy for their plight ( a number of them belong to the minority community but let’s not go down there for now). Should I not ask as a journalist what useful public purpose has been served by this ban? Or does asking questions make me agenda driven?

The issue of a meat ban has a more chequered past. Yes, previous governments of the Congress-NCP, be it at the state or municipal level, have sought to impose bans on meat sale during the Jain festival. Under pressure from the Jain community, attempts have been made by your predecessors (and I mention this in my article without citing the dates) in 1994, 2003-04 and 2014 through government resolutions, but these were never widely enforced (the 94 order, for example, was never carried out), were often driven by a spirit of voluntarism (an ‘’appeal” was made to close meat shops) and nor did they initially last beyond two days (although the August 2014 Government resolution did seek to extend it to four days). It is only this year that the BJP dominated Mira-Bhayandar municipal corporation imposed an unprecedented eight day ban on meat sale and strictly enforced it. Taking a cue, a group of BJP MLAs, councillors and Jain community persons met the municipal commissioner and sought to extend this to Mumbai city and have a similar eight day ban on meat sale across the city. It is only when the Shiv Sena and MNS opposed this, that your local leaders were forced to back off because they couldn’t muster a majority.

The message is clear and this was the point I was making: the state BJP wanted to impose, indeed was pushing to impose, a ban much wider in scope and ambit than in the past And if I ask questions in this regard, am I agenda-driven or pseudo-secular or simply reflecting the concerns of a large section of the population who do not appreciate the ban culture, be it by a BJP government or a Congress government?

Let’s turn to Rakesh Maria and the musical chairs played with the police commissioner’s office. You claim that his sudden transfer was necessitated by the rush of festivals: a new man was needed to oversee the festival arrangements. Truth is, almost no senior police officer I have spoken to is willing to buy this theory. Those who have retired have openly scoffed at this explanation, those in service are naturally hesitant to speak out. The conjecture is that Mr Maria’s transfer has something to do with the ongoing Sheena Bora investigation or a personal animus. You seem to suggest that his role as commissioner in a murder case was purely supervisory. Maybe it was, or should be.

But the fact is, your government after transferring him to DG Home Guards in the morning, the very same evening claims that he will continue to oversee the Bora investigation. This, even as a new police commissioner and another fine officer Ahmed Javed takes charge. Can there be anything more confusing? Then, to compound the confusion, your government now decides to suddenly hand over the Bora case to the CBI. The Mumbai police claimed in court that it had clinching evidence while seeking remand against the accused; then why is the case being transferred out? Is the Mumbai police incompetent, is there a cover-up, or is the case throwing up new dimensions which perhaps might need fresh investigation? Is a journalist not to ask such questions without his motives being questioned?

Let’s turn to the issue of sedition and a government circular. You claim that the circular is a routine translation from Marathi of an order passed by the previous state government. Your reply seems to suggest that the role of the present government is little more than clerical that requires no application of mind to a serious issue. Well, all I can say is that on Tuesday, the Mumbai high court gave a very different spin to this issue: on a petition by cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, they have asked your government not to implement the circular for now and asked you to reply by the 20th of October.

Since the matter is now before the esteemed court, maybe we should wait to see how they interpret the government circular: clearly, this round has been won by those who are worried that the circular can be misused by the police. Also, if you are not in agreement with the sedition circular why did your government not withdraw it? ‘Sedition’ is hardly a weapon to be used in the armoury of a democratic government which should welcome debate and disagreement. Why did your government re-issue this circular? And if I point to this potential for misuse, am I being agenda driven or simply doing my duty as a journalist?

The fourth issue is one which is dear to your and my heart: the plight of the farmers, especially in Marathwada at the moment. As a politician from Vidarbha, I know you empathise with farmers issues; I am aware that you took a lead role in exposing the irrigation scam when in opposition. And I am also aware of your efforts through the Jal Yukta Shivir Yojana to try and improve the situation on the ground. The facts though are that 729 farmers have committed suicide since January in Marathwada alone, more than any other part of the country, and tanker mafias and usurious money-lenders continue to rule. Yes, this is an inherited legacy (and I refer to the irrigation failures and comments made by previous ministers in my original letter), but on the ground there is hardly any evidence of the situation showing any marked improvement. Maybe, if your micro-irrigation schemes do work, then in the long run, there will be change. But for now, there is a deepening crisis. Should I not be asking you, therefore, to prioritise farm relief above all else? And should I not also ask what happened to the election promise of ensuring that those involved in the irrigation scam are punished? Or is asking hard questions in this age of cheerleaders and unbridled Bhakti, no longer acceptable?

My final point sir: in your response, at various points you call me a ‘leftist’, ‘pseudo secular’, and ‘biased’. You also rather derisively placed the word senior, as in senior journalist, in inverted commas. Personal attacks are now par for the course; 27 years of journalism have helped me acquire the skin of a rhinoceros. Over the years, I have been attacked by one and all: in 1992-93, Sharad Pawar, also a former Maharashtra CM, threw me out of a press conference because of the questions I asked on the Mumbai riots. Ten years later, my coverage of the 2002 riots led to my being attacked again. I have stood up against all forms of extremism, Hindu and Muslim, and am suspicious of all dogmas, be it of left or right. I have exposed Congress corruption (as editor of a news channel, I supervised the path-breaking investigative story on the Quattrochi accounts being defrozen), and sangh parivar hate politics, Mulayam’s goondaism (for which I was summoned to the UP state assembly) and Mayawati’s disproportionate assets (for which our OB van was burnt). Please do go through my columns over the last two decades, especially on Maharashtra politics, a state whose social and political decline I have observed with dismay.

I am happy to introspect, be corrected, but dislike being pigeonholed in any manner, except to say that I do believe in the spirit of a liberal, plural India that strives to provide equal opportunities to all its citizens. Does that make me a “Leftist?” as you appear to caricature all dissenters or questioners? If I question any form of bigotry, does that make me pseudo-secular? In my view, it makes me a proud, humane Indian.

Post-script: I must also thank all your followers who ensured I trended all through Tuesday on twitter. Their constant abuse gives me strength. Look forward to meeting soon! Jai Maharashtra, jai Hind!

Chaitanya Tamhane’s ‘Court’ is India’s entry for Oscars

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Court_Chaitanya_Tamhane

Mumbai: Chaitanya Tamhane’s debut Marathi movie “Court“, a courtroom drama which won a National Film Award, was on Wednesday chosen as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards.

The news was confirmed to IANS by Supran Sen, secretary general of the Film Federation of India (FFI), which selects the country’s official entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the prestigious Oscars.

This year, the 17-member jury to choose the entry was headed by veteran actor-filmmaker Amol Palekar, who also confirmed to IANS that “Court” is the chosen one.

According to reports, “PK”, “Masaan”, “Mary Kom”, “Haider”, “Kaaka Muttai”, “Baahubali” and “Kuttram Kadithal” were among the films that the jury also watched.

“Court” — about a trial which unfolds in a lower court, where the hopes and dreams of the city’s ordinary people play out — won the National Film Award in the Best Feature Film category for 2014.

Featuring impactful performances by actors Vivek Gomber, Vira Sathidar, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Pradeep Joshi, Usha Bane and Shirish Pawar, the movie did its fair share of rounds at foreign movie galas after premiering at the 71st Venice International Film Festival last year.

Last year, “Liar’s Dice“, a road drama starring Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles, was selected as India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Film category of Oscars, but it failed to make it to the top five at the Academy Awards.

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on 28 February, 2016.

Fortis Malar Hospital achieves significant milestone with over 50 successful heart transplants to its credit

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Fortis Malar Hospital

Chennai: The Fortis Center for heart failure & transplant has successfully completed over 54 heart-transplants, 12 long-term LVAD’s and 45 Veno arterial ECMO’s for critical heart failure. The center is also credited with India’s first successful implantation of Heartmate II LVAD and HVAD mechanical artificial heart pumps and has been the first, to successfully use ECMO to resuscitate patients from cardiac arrest and subsequently implant a long term LVAD or do a heart transplant. The Centre has also undertaken numerous inter-state heart retrievals for transplantation and has also performed the largest number of Paediatric heart transplants in the country, including one on a tiny infant of 2 years weighing just 6 Kg. The current transplant outcomes are excellent with a one year survival rate of over 90 % in such critically ill patients.

Expressing his deep appreciation for Fortis Malar at having accomplished this momentous feat, Bhavdeep Singh, CEO, Fortis Healthcare, said, “This is truly a great milestone. Our teams of highly accomplished doctors have done pioneering work in the field and have excelled in their endeavor to treat complex heart ailments having performed the largest number of successful heart transplants not only in the country, but in all of Asia. Thanks to their efforts Fortis Malar today is regarded as a landmark institution for cardiac care that is recognized far beyond Indian shores. I commend the entire team for their dedication and passion and we look forward to see them reach greater heights in the future.”

Hailing the stupendous team effort, Dr. K R Balakrishnan, Director, Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Centre for Heart Failure and Transplant, at Fortis Malar, said, “Chennai has seen a tremendous growth in transplants with the support of a diverse group of committed people including Organ Donors and their families, the Organ Registry committee, the Airport Authority of India, The Chennai Police who have changed the face of Organ Transport forever with the ‘Green Corridor’ and the Clinical excellence from Fortis Malar Hospital. Over the years, Chennai has also fine-tuned the crucial logistics necessary for successful heart transplantation resulting in excellent clinical outcomes. We are currently the leaders in heart transplantation in the entire country and in Asia. The majority of patients who can benefit from our advanced therapy are still not aware of the facilities available right here in India. Our goal therefore is to provide the highest quality of patient-centered care so that many more patients can benefit from the interdisciplinary approach, enormous talent and the multi-skilled resources within our team”, said

“Heart Failure is one of the most prevalent conditions globally, and there are about 2 million new cases in India alone every year with at least a third of them requiring advanced therapy to survive. Shockingly, 30-40% of them succumb within a year of diagnosis due to non-availability of appropriate care at the right time. With copious and wide ranging experience in handling heart failure patients, we continue to explore new frontiers and extend the limits of Cardiac Care as we establish this facility as one of the biggest stand-alone Cardiac institutions in the world. We are also amongst the few hospitals in the country that offer specialised treatment in the field of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Heart Transplant and Electrophysiology”, said Dr. Suresh Rao K. G, Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia and Critical Care at Fortis Malar.

Tamil Nadu has become the leading State for organ transplants in the country with its model being hailed as the best. The awareness about organ donation is quite high in Tamil Nadu and the statistics have been consistently high for the State over the last few years. As per the experts, though India’s population stands at 1.2 billion, only 0.08 percent of the people give consent to donate their organs. In the West, 10-20 percent of the population were ready donors. Infrastructure has now improved and there is dramatic improvement in organ donation which still needs a major push.

Successful heart transplants are a growing phenomenon in the country. Chennai alone has conducted 90% of successful procedures.

Burkina Faso’s interim President Michel Kafando, who was taken hostage during a coup a week ago, said he was back in power and had restored a civilian transitional government.

“I have returned to work,” he said in a brief speech to journalists at the foreign ministry in the capital on Wednesday. “The transition is back and at this very minute is exercising the power of the state.”

Burkina Faso coup leaders agreed to return to their barracks, signing a deal with the army that apparently defused the standoff sparked by last week’s coup.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday night after marathon talks in Nigeria’s Abuja, where West African heads of state had sought to break the impasse fuelled by angry threats on both sides.

The deal was signed a day after troops entered Burkina’s capital of Ouagadougou, turning up the pressure on the elite presidential guards (RSP), who staged the coup.

Under its terms, the RSP agreed to step down from the positions they had taken up in Ouagadougou, while the army also agreed to withdraw its troops 50km from the capital and guarantee the safety of the RSP members as well as their families.

The deal was presented to the Mogho Naba, or “king” of Burkina Faso’s leading Mossi tribe, in front of the media early Wednesday.

Burkina Faso plunged into crisis last Wednesday when the powerful RSP detained the interim leaders who had been running the country since a popular uprising deposed iron-fisted President Blaise Compaore last October.

The elite unit of 1,300 men loyal to Compaore officially declared a coup on Thursday and installed rebel leader General Gilbert Diendere, Compaore’s former chief of staff, as the country’s new leader.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Economic Community of West African States said it planned to reinstate and demonstrate solidarity with Kafando, who was released on Friday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been joined by the Turkish and Palestinian leaders at the ceremonial opening of the Russian capital’s new main mosque after 10 years of construction work.

The $170m mosque – entirely funded by private donations – unveiled on Wednesday, the eve of Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that is known as Kurban Bairam in Russia.

Putin, who has been fighting Muslim rebels in south Russia since coming to power in 1999, used his speech to emphasize the challenge of preventing Muslim radicalisation, praising the collaboration of the religious leaders of the country.

“Muslim leaders of Russia are courageously using their authority to resist the extremist propaganda. I’d like to express huge respect to these people who are carrying out a really heroic work…” he said.

Islam is the second largest religion in Russia, home to 23 million Muslims. The majority of them live in the country’s North Caucasian republics.

An estimated two million Muslims live in Moscow, which has seen an influx of people from the North Caucasus, Azerbaijan and the former Soviet states in Central Asia.

The new mosque – built on the site of a smaller, more than 100-year-old mosque destroyed in 2011 – can accommodate 10,000 worshippers, but it is still one of only six mosques in the city.

Calls from Muslim religious leaders to build more mosques have met with opposition from city officials and residents.

India’s goat sellers flock to internet this Eid

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Increasing number of traders and customers head online for “hassle-free” transactions of livestock to slaughter for Eid.

Farmers said they were increasingly moving to India's popular online classified portals, like Quikr and Olx [Al Jazeera]

Farmers said they were increasingly moving to India’s popular online classified portals, like Quikr and Olx [Al Jazeera]

by Al Jazeera

After decades of flocking to traditional livestock markets in the run-up to Eid, an increasing number of breeders and buyers in India are now heading online to haggle a good price for their prized animals.

Goats, sheep and cows are slaughtered worldwide to celebrate the major Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, which starts on Thursday this year.

Muslims sacrifice livestock on Eid and share the meat with family, friends, and the poor to commemorate the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) at God’s request.

India’s markets have long been bursting with breeders and buyers in the run-up to Eid, with feverish negotiations for the thousands of specially bred animals.

Hassle free

But farmers said they were increasingly moving to India’s popular online classified portals, like Quikr and Olx, for easier and stress-free sales.

“I am getting 10 to 15 calls every day,” Qaiser Khan, from the northern state of Rajasthan, told AFP news agency.

Khan said he usually travelled to markets throughout Rajasthan in the lead-up to Eid, keeping him away from home for weeks. But this year, he has sold half a dozen goats online, including one for $3,800.

“This is also hassle-free for customers. We deliver to their doorstep. Most of my friends are selling their livestock online,” Khan said, adding that his most prized goat has been fed almonds and milk for the last year.

A search of the sites shows a multitude of photos of “premium” and “big black” goats offered.

Those camped out at a traditional market in New Delhi’s old city shrugged off the online competition, saying customers preferred to see animals in the flesh before choosing one.

‘Lacks charm’

“Sales are yet to pick up, but there will be no impact on our business,” Juma Shah, from northern Moradabad city, told AFP.

“The goats sold online are costlier than [those at] this market,” he added.

Altamash Qureshi, who is selling four goats for a whopping $60,600 in total, said online shopping lacked the charm of traditional markets.

“The market has got its own charm, and nothing can match it. I am getting customers for the goats amid this muck and foul smell,” he said.

Priest arrested for making threat calls to Karnataka Sahitya Academy

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

K S Bhagwan

Bengaluru: A man working as a hostel warden and priest has been arrested at Hubballi in north Karnataka for allegedly making threat calls to Karnataka Sahitya Academy for choosing rationalist free-thinker and writer K S Bhagwan for annual Honorary Awards for Lifetime Achievement for 2013.

The arrested person was tracked down yesterday through the mobile phone used by him, police said today.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru Central) Sandeep Patil said that the person was produced before the court and is now under judicial custody.

Following the announcement of the award, which will be presented to Bhagwan and others on November 7 in Dharwad, Sahitya Academy had complained about receiving a threatening call.

Academy officials had also said they had received several abusive calls for choosing Bhagwan for the award, following which police had provided security to the literary body.

Recently a letter threatening Bhagwan was delivered to his residence at Mysuru, which came close on the heels of the murder of another noted Kannada progressive thinker and scholar M M Kalburgi in Dharwad.

Bhagwan has incurred the wrath of right-wing activists after he allegedly disparaged the Bhagavad Gita while speaking at a programme in Mysuru in February this year.

Earlier, a Bajrang Dal local activist was arrested in Dakshina Kannada district, a day after Kalburgi was gunned down on August 30, for allegedly posting remarks on Twitter threatening Bhagwan for his derogatory remarks on the Bhagavad Gita.

Goa CM rejects demand for ban on Sanatan Sanstha

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Laxmikant Parsekar

Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Wednesday rejected a demand to ban Sanatan Sanstha, whose members are accused of killing leftist leader Govind Pansare in Kolhapur in Maharashtra in February.

“There have been allegations against them (Sanstha) in Maharashtra, but as far as their functioning in Goa is concerned, there is nothing we have found objectionable. They have not created any controversy,” Parsekar told reporters at the state secretariat here.

The chief minister said a case against eight members of the Hindu right-wing organisation in connection with the 2009 improvised explosive device blast case in south Goa’s Margao town fell through because “concrete proof could not come out”.

While six Sanstha members were acquitted, two other accused, including Rudra Patil who is wanted in leftist Govind Pansare murder case, are still absconding.

The Goa unit of the Congress on Wednesday demanded a ban on state-based Sanatan Sanstha.

The right wing Hindu organisation was allegedly involved in spreading hatred and dividing the country on religious lines and should be banned, Goa Congress spokesperson Durgadas Kamat said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from St. Andre constituency, Vishnu Wagh, demanded a ban on the Sanstha, headquartered in Ramnathi village, 35 km from Panaji.

“In a democracy, there is no scope for violence. All those who try to use bullets to threaten the voice of opposition are terrorists, because they try to frighten the opposition. It is evident from the killing of Govind Pansare and M.M. Kalburgi. The Sanatan Sanstha’s hand is evident in these cases,” alleged Wagh who is considered close to the chief minister.

Many top politicians, including some cabinet ministers in the BJP-led coalition in Goa, have backed the organisation in public fora.

The Sanstha, through statements issued in Panaji, has repeatedly rejected the charges that its members were involved in the attack on Pansare, even as a Special Investigation Team probing the murder arrested Sanstha member Sameer Gaikwad and is on the lookout for another member Rudra Patil.

Somnath Bharti an embarrassment to AAP, should surrender: Kejriwal

September 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: In a stern message to AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said the legislator, who is on the run in a domestic violence case filed by his wife, is becoming an embarrassment to the party and he should surrender and cooperate with the police.

Breaking his silence on the row involving his former ministerial colleague, the AAP chief questioned Bharti’s act of going into hiding and asked why he was running away from the police and scared of going to jail.

“Somnath should surrender. Why is he running away? Why is he so scared of going to jail? Now he is becoming embarrassment for party and his family.

“He should cooperate with police,” Kejriwal said in his tweets referring to Bharti, who was the Law Minister during the 49-day stint of AAP government in 2013.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court rejected Bharti’s anticipatory bail in a case related to domestic violence filed by his wife Lipika. Police teams have been looking for him.

Last week, a local court rejected his anticipatory bail in the same case. The party’s top brass had then expressed its displeasure over his disappearance and asked him to cooperate with the police.

The party has been taking the stand that the Delhi Police has been targeting it. However, Bharti’s act of going into hiding has not gone well with party leadership.

AAP leader Ashutosh today said while police has been “unnecessarily showing a lot of interest” in the case, Bharti should “surrender and present his side of the story”.

“The High Court has rejected his bail… he should come out in open and present his case before the investigating agency. There is no point in running away from the law.. we have respect for the law, we have respect for the courts and we believe that justice will be done,” he said.
