Random arrests of innocent Muslim youths leading to radicalization: Telangana DGP

December 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Anurag-Sharma

Hyderabad: Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma has slammed the random arrests of innocent Muslim youths post bomb blasts in recent years.

In his presentation at a conference of Director Generals of Police (DGPs) in Bhuj, Sharma went on to claim that socio-economic exclusion of Muslims and random arrests of youths from the community in the aftermath of a terror attack are leading to radicalisation among the minorities.

While there were 10 presentations on various aspects of internal security at the annual meet organised by the Intelligence Bureau, the one on radicalisation, presented by Sharma, was the most critical in the context of threats from the Islamic State.

According to sources, Sharma said there was a sense of alienation among Muslims as “expected social and economic benefits” had not reached them. He highlighted how areas inhabited by minorities were generally bereft of civic amenities and dearth of economic opportunities. All this, he said, made the community vulnerable to radicalisation.

To illustrate how random arrests of Muslim youths has led to radicalisation, Sharma cited the 2007 Makkah Masjid blasts in Hyderabad. He pointed out how, immediately after the blasts, police arrested Muslim youths who were found to be innocent. The blasts were found to have been executed by Hindu outfits.

Advani, other BJP veterans get into a huddle after Kirti Azad’s suspension

December 24, 2015 by Nasheman

kirti-azad

New Delhi: BJP veterans L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar and Yashwant Sinha, who have been vocal against party leadership, today went into a huddle over developments in the party in the wake of MP Kirti Azad’s suspension after he attacked Arun Jaitley over DDCA issue.

Azad has sought intervention of the ‘margdarshak mandal’, comprising Advani, Joshi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, which was formed by BJP president Amit Shah after he took over the party reins.

Sources said Advani drove down to Joshi’s residence and Shanta Kumar and Sinha joined them at noon for a meeting that lasted about an hour. The four leaders, who had virtually revolted against the Modi-Shah team after BJP’s drubbing in Bihar Assembly election last month, are learnt to have discussed the situation arising out of Azad’s suspension.

They had made a strong public statement after the Bihar poll debacle, saying the party has been “emasculated” in the last one year and was being “forced to kow-tow to a handful”.

Cracking the whip yesterday, BJP suspended Azad, who has been leading a campaign against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on alleged corruption in DDCA, charging him with anti-party activities and accusing him of “colluding” with Congress and AAP to bring it into “disrepute”.

The action of the BJP Parliamentary Board to suspend him from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect came three days after his press conference attacking Jaitley and subsequent acts of defiance both inside and outside Parliament.

Houthi rebels and allied forces have captured a strategic mountain in the southwestern province of Ta’izz.

Yemen’s al-Masirah TV network reported on Wednesday that the Houthi forces were able to take Mount Jubah in the al-Mesrakh district of Ta’izz and kill a number of Saudi mercenaries.

According to the report, several Saudi-backed forces were also killed or captured during a raid on al-Shukah Mountain in Ta’izz.

In another development on Wednesday, the Houthis fired a Qaher 1 ballistic missile at the al-Faisal military base in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern city of Khamis Mushait in retaliation for Riyadh’s unrelenting military campaign against Yemen.

Separately, several soldiers loyal to embattled Yemeni president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, were killed after Yemeni troops fired a missile at the Dhubab district of Tai’zz.

Meanwhile, Saudi bomber aircrafts pounded Yemen’s northern province of Sa’ada, killing five civilians and wounding six others.

Saudi Arabia started its military aggression against Yemen in late March in a bid to bring Hadi back to power.

To curb the increasing violence, a seven-day ceasefire under the United Nations’ auspices was agreed in Yemen, which went into effect on December 15, but was repeatedly violated.

Saudi Arabia’s attacks against Yemen have so far claimed the lives of more than 7,500 people and injured over 14,000 others.

BJP suspends Kirti Azad for attacking finance minister Jaitley

December 23, 2015 by Nasheman

kirti-azad

New Delhi: Kirti Azad, lawmaker and former Test cricketer, has been suspended by his party the BJP for publicly targeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with allegations of corruption in Delhi’s cricket body DDCA.

In a one-line statement, the BJP said Mr Azad has been suspended for “anti party activities.”

The 56-year-old lawmaker from Darbhanga in Bihar, defied party chief Amit Shah’s whip and held a press conference on Sunday, all but naming the finance minster while alleging deep corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association or DDCA, which Arun Jaitley headed for 13 years.

Amit Shah, said party sources, had met Kirti Azad twice on Friday last and warned him against going public with his charges against Mr Jaitley, saying it would hurt the BJP and the government it leads.

In rebellion unprecedented in the BJP’s history, Kirti Azad also took on Mr Jaitley on the floor of Parliament, seeking a CBI investigation monitored by a special investigation team into his allegations. He signed off by reminding the House, “and we know who was heading the DDCA between 2008 and 2013,” a reference to Mr Jaitley.

On Twitter, he challenged Mr Jaitley to sue him, attacking the minister in multiple tweets.

Mr Jaitley has dragged five leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to court over their allegations of corruption against him, but he made no such move against Mr Azad, amid speculation that the BJP would punish the lawmaker after the winter session of Parliament ended today.

The BJP has rallied around Mr Jaitley, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah making strong statements in his defence. PM Modi told party lawmakers at a weekly meeting that Mr Jaitley would come out of the controversy “with flying colours.”

Kirti Azad found support today from fellow BJP lawmaker from Bihar, Shatrughan Sinha, who called him a “hero” and warned the party against taking action “against friend who’s fighting against corruption.”

Zimbabwe to adopt China’s currency the yuan

December 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Questions raised with plan to make the yuan legal tender in exchange for debt cancellation worth about $40m.

Zimbabwe

by Al Jazeera

Zimbabwe plans to adopt the Chinese yuan as legal tender in return for debt cancellation worth about $40m – a move one economist predicted “has no future at all”.

China has become the largest investor in Zimbabwe, which has been shunned by the West over its human rights record and is struggling to emerge from a deep 1999-2008 recession that forced the government to ditch its own currency in 2009.

Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced the plan in a statement on Monday and said the use of the yuan “will be a function of trade between China and Zimbabwe and acceptability with customers in Zimbabwe”.

In the last five years, Zimbabwe has received more than $1bn in low-interest loans from China, which is Harare’s second largest trading partner after South Africa.

“They [China] said they are cancelling our debts that are maturing this year and we are in the process of finalising the debt instruments and calculating the debts,” Chinamasa said.

However, according to one Zimbabwean analyst, the yuan has already been a legal tender for the past two years and Chinamasa’s comments are rather puzzling.

“Nothing looks to change from this latest move,” economist John Roberston told Al Jazeera.

“Yuan was included in the so-called multi-currency system a couple of years ago. It’s nothing new. What is different is the attachment to debts. It seems that the government is trying to pass this on as a concession by China.

“But they don’t need to make concessions. This is pretty meaningless as it stands.”

China has been accused of exploiting the continent’s vast mineral and energy resources at the expense of local people.

On a rare visit to Harare by a Chinese leader, President Xi Jinping witnessed the signing of 10 economic agreements earlier this month, including a $1bn loan to expand Zimbabwe’s largest thermal power plant.

“There is no yuan circulating in the country,” said Robertson. “South African rand and the US dollar have been the dominant currencies. So it’s a strange situation now as the yuan has no future at all.”

Zimbabwe’s central bank chief John Mangudya was in negotiations with the People’s Bank of China “to see whether we can enhance its usage here”, according to the finance minister.

But Robertson suggested although China is active in Zimbabwe’s markets and economy, it does not want to sell goods there in return for Chinese currency.

“Nearly everything Zimbabwe can make it imports for a lot of money, and China wants to be a main supplier of these imported goods and would want to take the US dollar in return,” he said.

China-Zimbabwe relations date back to 1979 and the African country’s “Look East” policy has made China a strong ally in the market.

Relations were further improved when President Robert Mugabe was awarded China’s alternative to the Nobel Peace Prize in October for what the committee called his inspired national leadership and service to pan-Africanism.

Mugabe has placed great importance on Zimbabwe’s relations with China, especially after the 2003 standoff with the EU that resulted in the economic depression when the interest rate shot up to almost 600 percent.

“China is desperate for the consumer goods market, basically whatever anyone with the buying power can pay for.

“We can see evidence of that in the country all the time. But people accepting payment will want it in dollars – as opposed to yuan – and that will be very damaging to China’s interest here in Zimbabwe,” said Robertson.

‘Sharia compliant’ airline takes off in Malaysia

by Al Jazeera

Malaysia’s first “sharia-compliant” airline made its inaugural domestic flight over the weekend and it hopes to include international routes next year, a senior airline official said.

Rayani Air will initially serve the domestic routes in the predominantly Muslim northern states of Kedah and Kelantan, as well as the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak, managing director Jaafar Zamhari told the DPA news agency on Tuesday.

The airline does not allow alcohol consumption on its flights and serves only halal food, Jaafar said.

Sharia is Islamic law based on the teachings of the Koran, and governs many day-to-day practices for observant Muslims.

“It is compulsory for our Muslim women cabin crew to wear hijab and for non-Muslim to wear a decent uniform,” he added.

Jaafar added there are also prayers and recitals before each flight departs.

The new airline has 355 employees, which includes 8 pilots and 50 cabin crew.

Rayani Air’s fleet consists of two Boeing 737-400 aircraft, he added.

The airline plans to expand its network in Asia next year and it is also planning to introduce destinations to Saudi Arabia for the Umrah and Hajj.

The idea for Rayani Air grew out of much-publicised complaints by conservative Muslims who believed that two major air disasters for the national Malaysia Airlines — Flight 370 that went missing in March 2014 and Flight 17 downed a few months later over Ukraine — were caused by Allah’s wrath.

Their solution: Airlines should adopt Islamic customs to avoid divine retribution.

“We are answering the call of many Malaysians who wanted an Islamic airline,” Zamhari told the AP news agency.

“We are not talking about being a holy airline or flying to holy destinations. We just want to provide an alternative to travelers, but we are open to all races and religions.”
