Movie Review: ‘Chalk N Duster’ is an eye opener & a meaningful fare

January 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Chalk N Duster

Producer: Amin Surani
Director: Jayant Gilatar
Star Cast: Shabana Azmi, Juhi Chawla, Divya Dutta, Upasna Singh, Girish Karnad, Zarina Wahab, Sameer Soni, Aarya Babbar, Gavie Chahal, Naveen Sharma, Adi Irani, Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Richa Chaddha, Akshita Arora & Kabir Arora
Genre: Drama
Verdict: Good

Director Jayant Gilatar has paid a well – deserved tribute to the most neglected and almost forgotten tribe namely the TEACHERS, in his latest outing Chalk N Duster.

Plot: Chalk N Duster is all about teacher & student’s communication. It highlights the problem of teachers & students where teaching way in the education system is changing day by day. In fact the film is an emotional journey of two teachers Vidya (Shabana Azmi) and Jyoti (Juhi Chawla), serving at a Mumbai based high school. Their passion and love for teaching, bonds them in a special relationship with their students. Their gratification is good grades and moral values which they strive to impart to students. However, in an evil turn of events, a wicked lady, Kamini (Divya Dutta) gets appointed as the principal, thus changing the fate of the administration.

Aces: Seasoned actors like Shabana Azmi & Juhi Chawla’s par excellence performance. Other senior actors like Girish Karnad, Upasna Singh, Zarina Wahab, Sameer Soni,
Aarya Babbar etc also leave an impact, but it is Divya Dutta in her vampish avatar who deserves a noteworthy mention. Watch out for the nail biting climax a la Slumdog Millionare. And lastly kudos to producer Amin Surani and director Jayant Gilatar for making a meaningful film like Chalk N Duster.

Minuses: The slow space of the movie and more than one unwanted scenes and characters.

Last Word: The film will pick up in the multiplexes as well as the single theatre’s mainly by word of mouth publicity.

Movie Review: ‘The Danish Girl’ is a heart touching movie

January 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

The Danish Girl

Producer: Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Anne Harrison, Gail Mutrux and Tom Hooper
Director: Tom Hooper
Star Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch, Amber Heard etc
Genre: Drama
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Director Tom Hooper’s journey from the small screen to the big screen has been very unique as he always directed films of diversified themes. In his latest outing The Danish Girl he tackles a very sensitive real life story of the 1st ever sex change operation.

Plot: The Danish Girl is a remarkably sensitive love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe & Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. With support from his loving wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) & artist Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne) prepares to undergo one of the 1st ever sex – change operations.

Aces: The sterling performance of Eddie Redmayne as both artist Einar Wegener and then as a transformed Lili. He gets a good support from Alicia Vikander as Einar’s wife and Ben Whishaw who gets infatuated with Lili and above all Tom Hooper’s deft directorial treatment. One more plus point is that the Censors have been very liberal as the film does not peg itself on the hinges of titillation.

Minus: The main fault lies with the script which borders mainly on melodramatic elements and becomes saccharine.

Last Word: It’s a film made with good intentions which will appeal more to the classy & the global festival circuit audiences rather than the masses.

Indonesia names ‘mastermind’ of Jakarta attacks

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Police say Indonesian Bahrun Naim working for ISIL funded deadly attack that killed two civilians and five attackers.

by Al Jazeera

Police have named an Indonesian, Bahrun Naim, as the mastermind of Thursday’s deadly attack in Jakarta’s main business district after it arrested three men in a pre-dawn raid.

The arrests on Friday came less than 24 hours after the shooting and bombing rampage, the first such attack in the world’s most populous Muslim nation since 2009, which killed seven people. Five of the dead were the attackers themselves.

Police said Naim, who spent one year in jail for illegal possession of weapons in 2011, funded the attack. He is now believed to be in Syria fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“His vision is to unite all ISIS-supporting elements in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines,” Jakarta police chief Tito Karnavian said.

The police chief of Depok, where the arrests were made, told Metro TV that the men – which he described as a bomb-maker, a firearms expert and a preacher – were not linked to the Jakarta attack.

Raids were also under way across other parts of the populous island of Java and on other islands to round up suspects behind the attack, Reuters reported.

“Now we are sweeping in and outside Java, because we have captured several members of their group, and have identified them,” National Police spokesman Anton Charliyan told Reuters.

At least 20 people were wounded when at least five attackers opened fire near a Starbucks coffee house in the city. Those killed included an Indonesian and a Canadian.

Officials said the attackers were armed with light weapons and suicide belts. Six blasts occurred about 50 metres apart in the central business district, which also houses a United Nations office.

The attacks were claimed by the ISIL group in a statement on Thursday, in which the group claimed it had killed 15 people.

Al Jazeera’s Sohail Rahman, reporting from Jakarta, said many circumstances surrounding the attacks on Thursday remained unclear.

“There’s not a state of emergency but certainly a heightened level of alert … three individuals are being questioned at the moment. Whether there were any that got away is one line of inquiry.

“Who are they, where did they come from, how did they get into Jakarta, who helped them get in, did anyone house them?

“The munitions that were used, the rifles and the explosives, where did all of that come from? That’s what’s being looked into by investigators.”

Fighters from the al-Shabab group have attacked a base for African Union peacekeepers in southwestern Somalia, blasting their way into the compound and exchanging fire with peacekeepers, a Somali military official told Al Jazeera.

Dozens of al-Shabab fighters on Friday assaulted the military base, which is run by Kenyan troops who are part of the AU force in the town of El-Ade, not far from the Kenyan border.

“The troops are fighting the terrorists to push them back,” Lieutenant Colonel Paul Njuguna, spokesman for the AU mission in Somalia, told Al Jazeera.

“The operation is still ongoing,” Njuguna said.

The assault started with a suicide car bomb, and then heavy gunfire was heard as fighters stormed into the base, he said.

‘Dozens killed’

Al-Shabab said their fighters killed dozens of Kenyan troops in the attack. However, Somali military has denied the claim.

“Everyone is familiar with al-Shabab’s propaganda. They will claim that they have taken over the camp even though they have not,” Njuguna told Al Jazeera.

“Once this battle ends, we will have the correct number of casualties and proper account of what and how this attack happened.”

Al-Shabab reported on its online radio station that its fighters had managed to penetrate the base and were fighting AU troops

Despite being pushed out of Somalia’s major cities and towns, al-Shabab continues to launch deadly guerrilla attacks across the Horn of Africa country.

The group, which has ties with al-Qaeda, has also carried out many deadly attacks inside Kenya.

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Rajesh Vivek, mainly known for his roles in superhits like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Swades’, died due to a heart attack in Hyderabad Thursday.

He was 66.

“Rajesh passed away around 3 PM in Hyderabad due to a heart attack. He was shooting there for a south Indian film.

It is very shocking news,” Vivek’s friend Vishnu Sharma told PTI here tonight.

“We were close friends. We knew each other for last 40 years. He was fine. It was not that he was unwell or anything like that,” he said.

Vivek was first introduced by Shyam Benegal in his film ‘Junoon’ (1978).

Basically a theatre actor, he had also acted in popular television series ‘Mahabharata’, ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ and in ‘Aghori’.

He made his mark as a villain in the beginning with films like ‘Veerana’ and ‘Joshilay’, often playing roles of henchman, but later on he started doing comic or supporting roles.

Some of his latest films include “Bunty Aur Babli”, “Bhoot Unkle”, “What is Your Rashee”, “Agnipath”, “Son of Sardaar”, “Dishkiyaaun”.

He had played the role of a dreaded dacoit in “Bandit Queen” (1994).

Australia beat India in 2nd ODI

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Australia

Brisbane: Australia rode on a strong batting performance to thrash an insipid India by seven wickets in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the Gabba here on Friday.

This was Australia’s second consecutive win and the hosts have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-ODI series.

Chasing India’s total of 308/8, the hosts rode on excellent displays by George Bailey (76 not out), Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh (both 71) to overhaul the target with an over to spare.

The Indian bowlers made the task easier for the hosts with an indisciplined performance, conceding as many as 12 extra runs (11 wides and a no-ball).

Indian opener Rohit Sharma took the Man of the Match award thanks to his second consecutive century of the series which helped the visitors post a big total. The Mumbai right-hander scored 127 off 124 deliveries with 11 boundaries and three sixes.

Ajinkya Rahane (89) and Virat Kohli (59) also made merry on a pitch which did not offer much assistance for the bowlers.

But the good performance by the Indian batsmen was cancelled out by the bowling attack which lacked any kind of sting.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/50), Ishant Sharma (1/60) and Umesh Yadav (1/74) picked up a wicket each, but the visitors seemed unable to prevent the Australians from scoring at a healthy rate.

Finch started off the Australian knock by hitting Sran for a couple of boundaries in the very first over. Ishant was no better at the other end, conceding back to back wides down the leg stump in his opening over.

Opening pacers Ishant Sharma and Barinder Sran were not able to make much of an impression on Australian openers Finch and Marsh, who played them quite comfortably.

The introduction of spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin also had no effect on the run rate as Finch and Marsh continued to score at a healthy rate. The visitors did themselves no favour by some shoddy fielding with Ajinkya Rahane and Sran dropping catches in the slips.

Finch and Marsh put together a 145-run stand for the opening wicket before Ajinkya Rahane pulled off a blinder at long-off off Jadeja’s bowling to send the former on his way.

Marsh also did not last long after that. He was felled when he was surprised by the extra bounce of an Ishant delivery that took the top edge and Kohli took an easy skier at short cover.

Steve Smith looked set for a well-deserved half-century before being undone by some poor shot selection. The right-hander probably misread an incoming delivery from Yadav and did not connect with an attempted cut as the ball nicked his off-stump.

That saw Glenn Maxwell (26 not out) join George Bailey in the middle and the duo pulled the hosts over the line.

Earlier, Rohit slammed his second consecutive ton to guide India to a challenging total. This was his 10th ODI century and the fourth in Australia against the hosts. The Mumbai batsman had scored an unbeaten 171 in the first ODI.

En route to his 124-run knock, Rohit entered his name in the record books by becoming the third batsman to score back-to-back tons against Australia in Australia after England’s Graeme Hick and India’s V.V.S. Laxman. It is also the top score by an Indian opener at the Gabba, going past Sachin Tendulkar’s 91 in March 2008.

James Faulkner (2/64), Joel Paris (1/40), John Hastings (1/46) and Scott Boland (1/64) were the pick of the bowlers for Australia.

Opting to bat first on a flat track where there was nothing much for the quicks, the visitors got off to a disappointing start as opener Shikhar Dhawan got himself out in a shameful fashion while trying to hit a delivery which was outside off stump, only to be caught by wicket-keeper Matthew Wade off the bowling of Joel Paris.

From there on, Kohli and Rohit took on the bowlers and posted a 125-run stand for the second wicket.

Both batsmen were looking good for yet another big score after striking half-centuries. But Kohli paid dearly for trying to sneak two runs in the last ball of the 24th over. A sharp throw rocketed back to Wade by Kane Richardson caught Kohli inches away from the crease to leave India at 134/2 in 23.5 overs.

Rahane then gave good company to Rohit as the duo notched up a 121-run partnership for the third wicket to help India cross the 250-run mark.

But Rohit’s innings came to an end in the 43rd over in an unlucky manner. Rahane drove a slower delivery back at bowler Faulkner who manage to get a bit of his hand on it, to deflect the ball onto the stumps.

Thereafter, Rahane, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11), Manish Pandey (6), Ravichandran Ashwin (1) and Ravindra Jadeja (5) all threw their wickets away while looking to step up the scoring rate.

Indian techie who went missing 3 yrs ago now in Pak army custody

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Hamid Nehal Ansari

Mumbai: The parents of a Mumbai youth Hamid Nehal Ansari, who was missing for over three years, breathed a sigh of relief after they found out that he was in Pakistan army’s custody.

Over three years after the Indian engineer went missing in Pakistan where he had gone to meet a girl he had befriended on the Internet, authorities have admitted that he has been in Army custody and facing trial in military courts. In a divisional bench of the Peshawar high court, deputy attorney-general Musarratullah presented a reply from the ministry of defence which stated that Nehal Hamid Ansari was being held by the Army and would be tried by a military court, the Express Tribune reported.

Ansari had travelled to Afghanistan for job prospects back in November 2012, Qazi Muhammad Anwar, counsel for Ansari’s mother Fauzia, had told the court.

He had befriended a Kohat-based woman through social media and had crossed over into Pakistan from Afghanistan.

He had been staying at a hotel in Kohat when the police, assisted by the Intelligence Bureau officials, arrested him on November 12, 2012.

“The intelligence agencies arrested him from a hotel in Kohat and since then his family and friends have been unaware of his whereabouts,” Anwar was quoted as saying by the paper. He added that as per a police inquiry report, Mr Ansari was being held by intelligence agencies.

After Ansari went missing, his mother had filed a complaint at a police station in Mumbai. She had also contacted the Afghan consulate in the city. The petitioner subsequently sent an application to the human rights cell of the Supreme Court in Islamabad, which forwarded the case to the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances in March 2014, the paper said.

In April, the commission directed the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa home and tribal affairs department to form a joint investigation team to trace Mr Ansari.

An FIR was subsequently lodged at the city police station in Karak district in connection with Mr Ansari’s missing.

Hamid’s mother Fauzia Ansari said that her son had gone to Kabul looking for a job.

“After a long struggle, we came to know that he is safe there under the watch of government. We are at least satisfied that he is fine. He is very talented but he never got desired job. He didn’t have job satisfaction,” she told ANI.

“He came to know about the job opening of manager at Kabul airport. He went to Kabul. We were in continuous touch but after 10 days there was no contact,” she added.

She said that they had approached the Afghanistan embassy to inquire about her son. They then found out that Hamid was trying to help a tribal girl who was being ill-treated in Pakistan.

“He was trying to help her and then he contacted other friends of nearby areas. They said that the girl is from tribal area, and no one can intervene in this,” she said.

“Maybe it wasn’t a right step though his intentions were good. We were so anxious whether he is dead or alive but we came to know yesterday that he is there,” she added.

She also thanked the Government of India for their efforts to help her son.

“Indian government has been very supportive, they showed us many letters which they sent to Pakistan high commission,” she said.

According to reports, a divisional bench of the Peshawar High Court disposed off the case of Hamid Ansari after the government confirmed that he was currently in army custody and facing a trial in military courts.

Muslim Personal Law Board spokesman Qureshi passes away

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Mohammed Abdul Rahim Qureshi

Hyderabad: Mohammed Abdul Rahim Qureshi, assistant general secretary and spokesman of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, died of cardiac arrest here on Thursday. He was 81 and survived by wife and 11 children.

He was admitted to a private hospital in Nampally for the past 15 days. His funeral prayer, Namaz-e-Janaza was conducted at Mecca Masjid in the city at 5 p.m.

Qureshi was not just an Islamic scholar but also one who held a B.Sc degree in Mathematics and a law graduate from Osmania University. After a short stint with Accountant General’s office in Hyderabad, Qureshi joined the progressive cultural organisation, Tameer-e-Millat which was founded in 1950. He has been a member of AIMPLB since 1971.

He was the president of Tameer-e-Millat that works in the field of educational and professional empowerment among Muslims at the time of his death.

Leading community leaders in Hyderabad deemed Qureshi as a leader with a stern voice who always rose to the occasion when it came to injustices towards and within the community. Under his co-leadership, AIMPLB was marching towards a massive campaign against communalism, titled Deen aur Dastur Bachao Tehreek.

Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, Md. Mahmood Ali who called on Qureshi’s family at Darussalam said, “He was the first to ask community elders and youth to take up legal recourse following demolition of Babri Masjid. He was a knowledgeable scholar and it was a great loss to the community”.

Following Qureshi’s demise at 4 am, Asaduddin Owaisi, president, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen tweeted his condolence, “Huge void and emptiness one feels with the passing away of scholars and Ulemas. Difficult to find selfless people with knowledge of Shariat and politics”. For people who knew Qureshi over the past four decades, he was a man of resolve and a legal luminary. “His legal contribution in Babri Masjid case and various other cases pertaining to Muslim personal law cannot be forgotten,” said Syed Amin Jafri, AIMIM, MLC.

“Remember Qureshi’s role in AIMPLB that had come to limelight during Babri Masjid demolition. He was a resilient voice during the time as he spoke not to flare sentiments but to give voice to the voiceless,” said Abid Rasool Khan, chairman, State Minorities Commission. He was buried at 6.15 pm after community leaders and general public paid homage.

Muslim couple on train beaten, bags searched over beef suspicion

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Gauraksha Samiti

Bhopal: A Muslim couple was among passengers assaulted by at least seven members of the Gauraksha Samiti at Khirkiya railway station, in Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, when they objected to their luggage being searched on suspicion that they were carrying beef, police said.

Police said the right-wing activists claimed to have seized “beef” from a bag during the “raid” on the general compartment of the Kushinagar Express on Wednesday before laboratory tests proved it was buffalo meat.

Police have arrested two members of the Samiti — identified as Hemant Rajput and Santosh — who claimed they acted on a tip-off about beef being transported by some passengers.

Nine local residents, including at least one relative of the couple, were also arrested and released on bail after they engaged in a scuffle with the Samiti members on the platform.

43-year-old Mohammed Hussain said he and his 38-year-old wife Naseema Bano were on way to their hometown in Harda after visiting an ailing relative in Hyderabad, when they were assaulted.

“They pushed my wife around when she objected to our luggage being searched. We live in India and know what is wrong and right, we eat only goat meat.

Besides, the black bag from which the meat was seized did not belong to us.

Finally, a constable came to our rescue and saved my wife,” said Hussain.

He also alleged that he was beaten up by the Samiti members on the platform after he “abused them when they misbehaved with my wife”.

Describing the sequence of events — the couple had stopped over for a night at another relative’s house in Khandwa — Hussain said he was standing near the door of the “crowded compartment” while his wife was given a seat by other passengers, when the activists started their search.

“When some passengers objected to their luggage being turned upside down, the activists roughed them up before they started searching the bags kept near Naseema. When she objected, they pushed her towards the toilet. Then, I called a relative who lives near the station. He rushed over with other local residents and engaged in a scuffle with the samiti members,” said Hussain.

“The samiti members threw several bags on to the platform to inspect their contents before they found the black bag. The owners of that bag were not found,” he said.

When contacted, K Richhariya, Assistant Sub-Inspector (Khirkiya police station), said the contents of the bag were tested at a local laboratory which confirmed they were pieces of buffalo meat.

Itarsi railway police station in-charge D K Joshi said Rajput and Santosh were sent to jail and a search launched for at least five other members of the samiti.

The arrested duo has been booked under sections 294 (obscene language), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC and Section 153 of the Railways Act (endangering safety of passengers travelling by railway by willful act or omission).

Police have also registered a case under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle.) of the IPC against two unknown persons to whom the bag belonged.

Harda MLA Ramkishore Dogne, meanwhile, alleged that the administration had lodged the complaint against local relatives of Hussain under pressure from the Bajrang Dal and VHP. “First, they were harassed, then a complaint lodged against their relatives,’’ the Congress legislator alleged.
