Online retailer Amazon has promised to donate its share of profit from sales of a song by German anti-Islam group Pegida to help thousands of refugees who have fled conflict seeking safety in Europe.

Customers planning to buy the single on Thursday were greeted by a message telling them the German subsidiary of the US-based online giant would donate its profit to NGOs dealing with the refugee crisis – the worst since World War II.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed hundreds of thousands of refugees, mainly from Syria, drawing a backlash from far-right groups such as Pegida, which has held frequent protests against government policies that it says encourage immigration.

The track, titled Together we are strong, sits atop Amazon’s German chart having pushed British singer Adele’s Hello into second place.

The song selling for $1.40 was released on December 21 and it is not clear how many have been downloaded in total.

More than 370 reviews have been written for the release, with the vast majority of people leaving one-star ratings – the lowest that can be given.

Many of those commenting left sarcastic quips or expressed their embarassment.

“What can I say? Stupid, embarrassing, irrelevant, a little reminiscent of a poorly made copy of the Henry Maske song,” said one reviewer, referring to the cinematic score used as entrance music by the German boxer.

Many of the five-star reviews were equally critical of the song itself, but thanked Amazon for donating its share of revenue towards the refugee crisis.

Pegida, which is a German acronym of Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West, is a far-right movement in Germany and other European states that positions itself against Muslim immigration and the movement of refugees into the continent.

The organisation has been accused of far-right sympathies by its detractors and has been condemned by Chancellor Merkel.

PAN to be mandatory for transactions above Rs 2 lakh

January 1, 2016 by Nasheman

PAN-card

New Delhi: In yet another bid to curb generation of black money, quoting of the income tax Permanent Account Number (PAN) would be mandatory for cash transactions above Rs.2 lakh from January 1, 2016.

“The government received numerous representations from various quarters regarding the burden of compliance this proposal will entail. PAN will be required for transactions above Rs.2 lakh, regardless of the mode of payment,” the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement on Thursday.

The finance ministry has also rationalised the monetary limits for certain transactions requiring mandatory quoting of PAN.

The monetary limit for sale or purchase of immovable property has been doubled to Rs.10 lakh, and that for hotel and restaurant bills to Rs.50,000.

“In dealing with domestic black money, transactions dealing with cash of more than Rs.2 lakh will require submission of PAN details,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha earlier this month while presenting his ministry’s supplemetary demands for grants.

Odd-even scheme starts in Delhi, overwhelmed by ‘success’, says Kejriwal

January 1, 2016 by Nasheman

delhi-traffic-pollution-cars

New Delhi: Delhi government’s odd-even scheme on car movement to curb pollution in the national capital started on Friday.

As per the rule, cars with odd-number registration would be allowed to ply on Friday.

Those not abiding the rule would be fined Rs.2,000.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he was “overwhelmed” by the response of people towards the odd-even scheme here.

“I am truly overwhelmed by the response we have received so far. There are very less even-numbered cars on the roads. The plan seems to have been successful,” he told media.

He said the people of Delhi accepted the scheme “whole-heartedly”, adding “I am confident that in next five years people will show the way to rest of the country”.

“Delhi has done it! Reports so far very encouraging. Delhiites! You give me hope that you are capable of achieving big challenges,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

“I am pooling my car and going to office with two ministers, my personal secretary and my joint secretary,” he said.

Mooted by the Delhi government, the odd-even scheme that allows odd and even-numbered private vehicles on the city roads on alternate days aims at reducing air pollution levels in the national capital.

US: More Latinos converting to Islam

January 1, 2016 by Nasheman

latino-muslims

by Aaron Morrison, IB Times

By most official measures, Latinos in the U.S. are considered to be the fastest-growing demographic. They are also the fastest-growing group of Muslims in America, according to organizations that cater to Hispanics converting to Islam. Although the statistics haven’t been widely tracked, there are an estimated 150,000 Islam converts among the Latino community in the U.S., reported the Press-Enterprise, a California newspaper.

The trend of Hispanic converts to Islam has been tracked by the Islamic Society of North America, which in 2006 estimated there were roughly 40,000 Latino Muslims in the U.S., according to a report by National Public Radio. Some community leaders said the recent growth of the demographic has its roots in a shared experience of immigration and the negative political rhetoric that advocates have deemed as anti-Muslim.

Mark Gonzales, a Muslim poet and artist in California, told the Orange County Register that immigration officials’ targeting of Mexicans and Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks helped the two demographics find common ground. “Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world, and Latinos are converting to Islam at a rate higher than any other [ethnicity],” said Gonzalez, who is of Mexican-American and French-American heritage and converted to Islam 12 years ago.

Most Latino Americans belong to the Roman Catholic Church, according to religion data tracked by the Pew Research Center. But the Catholic share of the Latino population has declined, while the number of Latinos who are Protestant or report no religious affiliation has risen.

Jihad Turk, president of Bayan Claremont, an Islamic graduate school in California, told the Press-Enterprise that Islam is most similar to Catholic beliefs. Muslims believe in many stories contained in the Christian Bible, including the prophets, he said.

“Muslims not only believe in God and the Ten Commandments, but also in Jesus as Christ born to the Virgin Mary and her story is told in the Quran in more detail than it’s told in the Bible,” Turk said. Organizations have formed in the U.S. to help the merging of Latino and Muslim communities.

Rida Hamida, president of the Arab American Chamber of Commerce in Orange County, California, has been working with Latino Muslims to highlight the merging of cultures. A series of public events scheduled for next month will focus on a time of Muslim rule in Spain and Portugal, from 711 and 1492, when Muslims, Christians and Jews cohabited along the Iberian Peninsula, Hamida told the Orange County Register.

Protesting against discrimination Dalit IAS officer quits post, accepts Islam

January 1, 2016 by Nasheman

Umrao Salodiya

Jaipur: Alleging that he is being “victimised” because of his Scheduled Caste origins, a senior IAS officer here has changed his religion and applied today for Voluntary Retirement from Service (VRS) in protest against the extension of tenure awarded to Chief Secretary CS Rajan.

“I am Chairman of RSRTC and Additional Chief Secretary for over the last four years and competent for the post of Chief Secretary but the present CS is given 3 months extension by the state government. Hence I cannot work under a junior,” Chairman of Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation Umrao Salodiya said here.

“I was under the impression that being a member of Scheduled Caste (SC) and senior IAS officer cadre, I would be given a chance to work as Chief Secretary. I feel victimised.
Hence I submitted three months notice of VRS to the state government,” the Additional Chief Secretary rank IAS officer said.

“Now the state government has to take a decision on my VRS cum protest letter within three months. However my retirement is due June, 2016,” he said.

Giving another example of a case in which he filed an FIR with GandhiNagar police station against a judicial officer in 2014, he said that no action was initiated by the police.

“Now I will be called as Umrao Khan,” the officer said.

“Being a Hindu and SC member, I was always victimised. Hence I converted my religion to Muslim by reading “Kalma” in a masjid but members of my family have not changed religion,” he said.

When asked whether he has any plans for re-marriage with any Muslim woman/girl, he said, “No way. I have my family. I feel happy now. I am satisfied that I protested against victimisation”.

Incumbent Chief Secretary C S Rajan, who was to retire today, has been given three months extension by the Raje government.

When contacted, the Department of Personnel Official said he had also heard about the matter on a TV news channel, but so far no letter landed there.

Movie Review: All said & done Pointbreak is slightly disappointing

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

pointbreak

Producers: John Baldechi, Broderick Johnson, Cristopher Taylor, David Valdes, Kurt Wimmer & Andrew A. Kosove
Director: Ericson Core
Star Cast: Luke Bracey, Edgar Ramirez, Judah Lewis, Teresa Palmer, Ray Winstone, Nikolai Kinski, Tobias Santlemann, Bojesse Christophe, Delroy Lindo et al
Genre: Action Thriller
Verdict: AVERAGE

The current release Pointbreak in 3D is the remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film of the same name starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swazye. Cinematographer turned Director Ericson Core has made a good adventure thriller in Pointbreak. Yet the cinematographer Ericson Core overrides the director Ericson core.

Plot: An undercover cop makes his way into a scene of bank – robbing extreme – sports athletes. Johnny Utah ‘the Osaki 8’ is named after Ono Osaki, an eco – warrior who challenged the extreme sports world to a series of eight ordeals that honours the forces of nature. The challenge is to create a perfect line when completing the trials. Although Johnny Utah claims it is a path to enlightenment, Bodhi says that Ono Osaki was more interested in balance than enlightenment and he and the others in his group appear to want to use the teaching for liberating rather than material gain, even though it involves criminal activity.

Aces: The outstanding performances of Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez, the mind blowing action sequences and above all the brilliant cinematography of Ericson Core.

Minuses: Sadly enough this Pointbreak is no match or not even a patch on the original Pointbreak. Maybe director Ericson Core intended to create some kind of ultra mega action movie but ends up failing to live up to the audiences expectations.

Last Word: Pointbreak lacks the punch and it all ends up as a gimmick to showcase a Cola Commercial. Period!

Movie Review: ‘Monster Hunt’ is one of the most endearing and superb movie

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Monster-Hunt

Producer: Bill Kong, Doris Tse & Yee Chung – Man
Director: Raman Hui
Star Cast: Bai Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Raman Hui the animator of lovable movies like Shrek, antz and Madagascar fame now makes his feature debut with Monster Hunt, a $40 million live – action / animation hybrid fantasy movie.

Plot: Humans have been at war against monsters for generations, but after the birth of Woba, the last of the monster kings, an effort to bring the two races together begins in right earnest. So when a monster queen gives birth to a cute prince, the child faces an immediate threat from other fantastic creatures and the humans beings too, who hunt them.

Aces: In his debut movie Monster Hunt director Raman Hui has come up with a very endearing fare for people of all ages and from every walks of life. Besides its technical finesse, the movie Monster Hunt also has some smart performances from Chinese actors like Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang etc.

Minuses: The war oriented plot between monsters of all shapes and sizes and human beings seems highly indigestible. At one point of time the human beings seems more interested in fine dining topped with the choicest wines and then at another point of time they are more interested in a fight to finish warfare with the monsters.

Last Word: Monster Hunt has regaled the Chinese people in a big way and now it is ready to regale the global audiences. So all in all Monster Hunt is certainly a not to be missed fare especially for the children as well as the teenagers. Period!
