Make Modi’s degree public: Kejriwal to DU

May 5, 2016 by Nasheman

arvind-kejriwal-manish-sisodia

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday urged Delhi University to make public Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BA degree.

In a letter to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi, Kejriwal referred to Modi’s successive election affidavits which stated that he had a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University.

“It will be better if you put on the university website all the documents related to the prime minister’s degree,” he said.

“The people of this country have a right to know how educated their prime minister is.”

The letter comes a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader alleged that Modi didn’t have a BA degree from Delhi University.

He said there were no records in the university and the purported degree of Modi published by some newspapers was forged.

Modi’s election affidavit in 2014 claimed he had both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. According to the affidavit, he completed a distance education course from Delhi University in 1978 in Political Science.

Kejriwal said in his letter to Tyagi that if Modi didn’t have a BA degree, then he could not be having an MA degree too.

“Gujarat University says he (Modi) has done MA from there. But if he hasn’t even done his BA, how did he get admission in MA? It raises doubts that his MA degree is also forged. It is a very serious matter.”

On Wednesday, three AAP leaders alleged that Delhi University refused to share with them details regarding Modi’s BA degree and told them to approach the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) instead.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) had on April 29 directed the universities of Delhi and Gujarat to respond to the RTI application regarding Modi’s educational qualifications.

Earlier, the Delhi University declined to give information related to Modi’s BA degree despite RTI requests.

The university cited its inability to get the information without a roll number as the reason for the denial.

Keenan-Reuben murder case: All 4 accused get life imprisonment

May 5, 2016 by Nasheman

keenan-reuben

Mumbai: All four accused have been pronounced guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by Mumbai special court on Thursday in a 2011 Keenan-Reuben murder case.

Keenan Santos (24) and Reuben Fernandez (29) were stabbed by eve-teasers after a scuffle near a paan shop in suburban Andheri on October 20, 2011.

The duo were attacked when they tried to protect their woman companions from the group of men who were misbehaving with them. The group, after retreating, returned to the spot with over ten aides and brutally assaulted Keenan and Reuben in full public view.

Police had arrested Jitendra Rana, Sunil Bodh, Satish Dulhaj and Dipak Tival the next day after the incident.

In October 2012, the court had framed charges against four accused for murder, conspiracy and molestation.

Wildfire forces evacuation of Canada’s Fort McMurray

May 4, 2016 by Nasheman

Massive blaze sweeps through oil sands region and prompts biggest evacuation in the history of Alberta state.

by Al Jazeera

The entire population of the Canadian city of Fort McMurray was ordered to leave their homes late on Tuesday as a massive wildfire swept through Alberta province’s oil sands region.

More than 80,000 residents were ordered to flee after an earlier evacuation order was extended to tens of thousands more people as flames continued to make their way into the city.

No casualties have been reported but damage has been extensive, with petrol stations exploding and a hotel and one of the town’s many motor home parks going up in flames, local media said.

The air over the city was thick with black smoke.

“All of Fort McMurray is under a mandatory evacuation order,” Alberta emergency services said, after previously indicating that the northern edge of the fire was “growing rapidly”.

Scott Long, of Alberta Emergency Management, said the flames had burned a number of structures, but couldn’t say how many.

The airport was still open but the hospital had to close.

Alberta Premier, Rachel Notley, said officials were doing all they could to ensure people’s safety and said they were looking into the possibility of an airlift for residents with medical issues.

“I know that it’s a very scary time,” Notley told a press conference.

“Our focus is completely and entirely right now on ensuring the safety of people, of getting them out of the city and ensuring that they are safe and secure.”

Authorities urged residents to head towards evacuation centres as the city reeled from what Notley called the province’s largest ever evacuation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he had called Notley to offer federal aid to the province.

“My thoughts are with people affected by the fire in Fort McMurray tonight. Stay safe and remember to follow evacuation orders,” he tweeted.

Helicopters and firefighters

Long lines of cars travelled north via the city’s main highway, while flames ravaged the embankment on the side of the road. Police closed the southbound lanes.

“Be patient, drive safely and please give way to emergency vehicles,” an evacuation notice read.

The fire, which was contained south of Fort McMurray until Monday, was pushed towards the city by 50km/hr winds and quickly reached homes, helped by a drought in Alberta.

The province saw record temperatures of nearly 30C.

The fire quickly expanded, with blazes forming in several places, forcing the city’s evacuation.

Bruce Mayer, assistant deputy minister of agriculture and forestry, said nine air tankers, a dozen helicopters and about a hundred firefighters were battling the flames, with reinforcements on the way.

Some 160 police officers were mobilised to implement the evacuation, according to Notley.

Oil companies, crucial to the region’s economy, set up emergency shelters in their huge bungalow communities for Canadian and foreign workers.

Fresh air strikes batter Syria after truce expires

At least 20 Syrian government air strikes have peppered the Damascus suburbs after a temporary truce agreement expired, a monitoring group said.

The strikes targeted areas in Eastern and Western Ghouta after the deal expired at midnight, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Wednesday.

The monitor also reported fighting between rebels and government forces in Deir al-Asafir, an area targeted by the strikes in Eastern Ghouta.

Separately, the UN Security Council scheduled a meeting on escalating violence in the city of Aleppo in response to an urgent request from the UK and France.

“Aleppo is burning … and its civilians are being killed,” Matthew Rycroft, Britain’s ambassador to the UN, told the Security Council after members adopted a resolution demanding an end to attacks on hospitals and medical workers in Syria and other warzones.

French ambassador François Delattre said the city had “been under constant bombardment since 2012” and described it as the “martyred centre of the resistance” to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Jan Egeland, chairman of the UN task force on humanitarian access in Syria, said during a press conference on Wednesday that the fighting in Aleppo is creating new areas for endless suffering with new possible besieged areas where hundreds of relief workers are unable to move.

“We do not need declarations, we need an end to the bombardment and an end to the fighting,” Egeland said.

At least three people were killed in a rebel rocket attack on a hospital there on Tuesday, the observatory said, in shelling that killed at least 19 people in government-controlled parts of the city.

Rebels and government forces have been battling each other with rockets and bombs across Aleppo. More than 250 people have been killed – mostly by government air strikes – in less than two weeks.

Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy, recently estimated that 400,000 people have been killed in a five-year conflict that has driven millions of people from the country.

Delhi Daredevils thrash Gujarat Lions by eight wickets in IPL

May 4, 2016 by Nasheman

Cricket

Rajkot: Rishabh Pant (69) and Quinton de Kock (46) produced a match-winning opening stand to guide Delhi Daredevils to a convincing eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Lions in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Tuesday.

Batting first, Gujarat posted 149/7 in 20 overs, thanks to a much-needed half-century by Dinesh Karthik (53).

In reply, riding on an impressive 115-run opening partnership by Pant and de Kock, Daredevils chased down the total comfortably posting 150/2 with 16 balls to spare.

Chasing a target of 150, Delhi got off to a rollicking start, courtesy openers Pant and de Kock.

The duo helped the team score 61 runs without losing a wicket after the completion of powerplay.

Both the left-handed batsmen, even after the fielding restrictions were over, kept on playing positively to bring up the 100-run partnership for the first wicket in the 12th over itself.

But as the duo was looking comfortable to get the team over the line without losing any wickets, the home side struck in successive overs, in the 13th and the 14th, to remove both of them.

Pant in his 40-ball innings struck nine fours and two sixes while de Kock hit four boundaries and one six.

But incoming batsmen Sanju Samson (19 not out) and J.P. Duminy (13 not out) played sensibly to ensure the team got past the victory line with ease.

For Gujarat, Ravindra Jadeja and Shivil Kaushik picked one wicket each.

Earlier, asked to bat by the visitors, Gujarat were off to a poor start, losing their top order within the first four overs.

Gujarat openers Brendon McCullum (1) and Dwayne Smith (15), who have built up an extremely successful combination, did not click for once.

Zaheer set things rolling when he dismissed McCullum after the in-form Kiwi veteran misjudged a delivery that moved in after pitching. Nadeem then claimed two wickets in the next over to hand Delhi the early advantage.

The left-armer sent back Smith with the first ball of the over when the West Indies all-rounder smashed one into the hands of Chris Morris at long-on.

The fit again Aaron Finch (5) lasted all of five balls before a poorly executed shot saw him offer an easy top edge to Rishabh Pant at short fine leg.

With the hosts struggling at 24/3, Gujarat skipper Suresh Raina (24) and Karthik set about bringing the innings back on track with a 51-run partnership.

Raina seemed to be in good touch during his 20-ball 24, even lifting Mohamed Shami over the third man boundary for a six. But he fell when stepped out to attempt another big hit off Mishra, only to miss complete as Quinton de Kock whipped off the bails.

Ravindra Jadeja (36 not out) joined Karthik in the middle and the duo kept up the good work by adding 52 runs between them off 33 deliveries. Shami brought the partnership to an end with a straight delivery when Karthik mistimed his shot as the ball clipped the top of off-stump.

James Faulkner (7) virtually gifted his wicket to Morris with some extremely poor shot selection before Jadeja and Ishan Kishan (2) added 10 runs in the last over to take the total close to the 150-run mark.

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem was the most successful among the Delhi bowlers with figures of 2/23 in three overs.

Brief scores: Gujarat Lions 149/7 (Dinesh Karthik 53, Ravindra Jadeja 36; Shahbaz Nadeem 2/23) vs Delhi Daredevils 150/2 in 17.3 overs (Rishabh Pant 69; Ravindra Jadeja 1-21)

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha ethics panel has recommended the expulsion of Vijay Mallya “with immediate effect” from the house after his resignation was rejected by Chairman Hamid Ansari.

“Having considered the whole matter, including Mallya’s (resignation) letter, the Committee of Ethics unanimously decided at its meeting on May 3, 2016, to recommend to the house that Vijay Mallya be expelled with immediate effect,” the panel said in its recommendation to the upper house.

The report was tabled in the house on Wednesday by panel chairman Karan Singh.

“The committee hopes that by taking such stern action, a message would reach the general public that parliament is committed to take such steps as are necessary against erring members to uphold the dignity and prestige of this great institution.”

The house will now take a call on the recommendation before adopting or rejecting the committee report.

Mallya is accused of defaulting on more than Rs.9,000 crore in loans he had taken from a consortium of banks. He left India on March 2 and is believed to be in the United Kingdom. His passport has been revoked after he failed to appear for three consecutive summons by the Enforcement Directorate.

In an apparent attempt to pre-empt his expulsion, Mallya wrote to Chairman Ansari on Tuesday seeking to resign from the house because he did not want his “name and reputation to be further dragged in mud”.

However, Ansari turned down the resignation on procedural grounds.

Vyapam scam: Prime accused, absconding for three years, arrested

May 4, 2016 by Nasheman

Vyapam

New Delhi: In a joint operation, Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and CBI today arrested from Kanpur one of the prime accused in the Vyapam scam Ramesh Shivhare, who had been absconding for the last three years.

“We have arrested Shivhare this morning. He is wanted by CBI in several cases in the Vyapam scam,” Uttar Pradesh DGP Javeed Ahmed told PTI over phone.

CBI sources said here that Shivhare is wanted in five cases probed by it which are related to alleged irregularities in the conduct of Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board also known as Vyapam.

They said Shivhare was absconding for the last three years and carried a reward of Rs 10,000.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, Shivhare’s wife was a local body member in Mahoba.

They said Shivhare was one of the kingpins of the scam and was nabbed in a joint operation by UPSTF and CBI from Avas Vikas colony in Kalyanpur area of Kanpur.

He will be produced before a competent court today after which he will be taken to Bhopal, they said.

Shivhare allegedly acted as a middleman and arranged for impostors and dummy candidates to appear in the examination carried out by Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board for a certain amount.

A resident of Uttar Pradesh, Shivhare has been evading questioning by authorities probing the case. His application for anticipatory bail was also turned down by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2014.

“There is material to indicate the involvement of applicant in the commission of the crime, for which reason, the Investigating Officer has been insisting for attendance of the applicant for quite some time but in vain,” a bench of Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice Alok Aradhe had said.

Pathan, Russell win match for Knight Riders against RCB

May 3, 2016 by Nasheman

kkr

Bengaluru: Batting knights Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell won the match for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), scoring 189/5 with five balls to spare at Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday in the 30th match of IPL Season Nine.

Pathan (60) and Russell (39) started hitting regular boundaries for KKR halfway after the match to bring down the asking rate from 9.3 runs an over at the beginning of the chase to 47 runs in 24 balls and 21 runs in 16 balls finally after the dismissal of Russell to one run in five balls in the 20th over.

Russell blasted four sixes and a four in 24 balls to reach 39 while Pathan remained unbeaten on 60 with half a dozen fours and a three sixes.

Pathan destroyed Watson in the 17th over, he smashed two sixes, three fours and a double to heap 24 runs.

Russell and Pathan logged a 96 runs partnership in 45 balls for the sixth wicket. Pathan reached his half century in 27 balls in the 19th over.

Except for captain Gautam Gambhir (37) in the top order, other batsmen including Robin Uthappa (1), Chris Lynn (15) and Manish Pandey (8) got out cheaply.

Yuzvendra Chahal 2/27 emerged the most successful bowler for RCB, he claimed danger man Russell in the 18th over, caught near the boundary line by Stuart Binny while attempting a big six.

Shane Watson leaked 38 runs in three overs claiming just a wicket.

Earlier, RCB set a target of 186 runs for KKR, scoring 185/7 in 20 overs.

Lokesh Rahul and skipper Virat Kohli hit 52 each to propel RCB to a respectable total after swashbuckling hitter Chris Gayle (7) failed yet again.

Starting off slowly, RCB managed just two runs in the first over off Andre Russell.

Gayle launched a six off Morne Morkel in the second ball of the second over, only to get out on the next ball with a reckless shot, giving a simple catch to keeper Robin Uthappa.

With the latest dismissal, Gayle’s “unit-score innings” streak continues in the IPL from the World Twenty20.

Opening the innings for RCB, Rahul’s 32-ball-52 witnessed six fours and two sixes while Kohli managed four fours in his 44-ball-52.

AB De Villiers (4) was the other trump card which failed to make a mark for the home team.

Australian all rounder Shane Watson (34) kept the runs flowing in the last overs with five fours and a six in the company of local boy Stuart Binny (16), who cracked two sixes and a four when it mattered the most.

KKR bowlers Russell (24/1) and Morne Morkel (28/2) produced economical spells while Sunil Narine, Umesh Yadav and Piyush Chawla were expensive, though the last also claimed two wickets.

Excellent performance with bat and the ball earned the man of the match award to Russell, he hit the highest number of sixes in the match.

With the latest win, KKR claimed the second spot among all teams in IPL Season Nine with 10 points, five victories and three losses in eight matches while RCB plummeted to the seventh position with just four points, two wins and five losses in seven matches.

Brief Scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders 189/5 in 20 overs (Yusuf Pathan 60, Adnre Russell 39; Yuzvendra Chahal 2/27, Sreenath Aravind 1/16) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 185/7 in 20 overs (Lokesh Rahul 52, Virat Kohli 52; Morne Morkel 2/28, Piysh Chawla 2/32).
