Kerala: Dalit Law student’s murder accused in police custody

June 16, 2016 by Nasheman

rape

Thiruvananthapuram: The suspect in the April 28 brutal rape and murder of a 30-year old Dalit woman at Perumbavoor in Kochi is in police custody, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today said.

“Investigation team has received full information about the accused. From yesterday onwards, the accused was under police radar,” he said reacting to reports that the accused, Amir Ul Islam, a migrant labourer from Assam, had been nabbed by the Special Investigation team probing the murder.

Police have received all information, he said.

“The people of Kerala were waiting for such a news”, he said to a question.

“The development is a feather in the cap of Kerala Police”, the Chief Minister said.

A report from Kochi quoting police sources said that a Special Investigation Team probing the murder of the woman was questioning the suspect. They said the 23-year-old Islam’s arrest is expected to be recorded today, only after which his DNA samples will be taken.

The LDF government, after assuming power on May 25 had changed the investigation team and entrusted the probe to ADGP B Sandhya on its first cabinet meeting itself.

The rape and murder was in focus during the Assembly polls campaign with political parties attacking the then UDF regime for tardy progress in the investigation and failure to nab the culprits. The woman was murdered in her home on April 28.

The attack, which took place at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, had been a major campaign plank of the LDF in the run up to the May 16 Assembly elections.

Movie Review: ‘Project Marathwada’ is an extremely sensitive film dealing with t farmers suicides

June 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Project Marathwada

Director: Bhavin Wadia
Star Cast: Om Puri, Seema Biswas & Dalip Tahil

Bhavin Wadia in his latest offering namely Project Marathawada has dealt with a very sensitive topic of farmer’s suicide which is still prevalent in certain pockets of Maharashtra. All kudos to the producers who have backed such a topical & meaningful cinema.

The scripted scenario of Project Marathawada opens with a poor peasant Tukaram’s (Om Puri) son committing a suicide leaving the family shattered. The old man struggles to get justice as everyone turns a deaf ear to his pleas. That’s when he takes the drastic decision of ending his own life, but not before he makes his voice heard.

Director Bhavin Wadia takes up this noble cause as its theme in Project Marathawada but scratches only the surface. he makes the issue look shockingly uni – dimensional. The story lacks depth and banks solely on the prowess of the film’s accomplished cast.

All the veteran actors like Om Puri, Seema Biswas, Dalip Tahil et al are more than perfect in their job of salvaging the situation. The film’s supporting cast too has performed very well.

Tail Piece: Project Maratha may perform well in the interiors but will definitely need a strong word of mouth to run all over.

Movie Review: ‘TE3N’ is enjoyable only for its thriller element & brilliant performances by its actors

June 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

TE3N

Director: Ribhu Dasgupta
Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Nawazuddin Siddique
Music: Clinton Cerejo

In his 1st ever outing Micheal director Ribhu Dasgupta did not make much of a directorial mark and he fails to make much of a directorial marking in his 2nd outing TE3N too. Although TE3N is an official remake of a South Korean film named montage. That apart It’s the mysterious element of TE3N & the dynamic performances of the trio of Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan & above all Nawazuddin Siddiqui that helps the film to be on track to some extent.

The scripted scenario of TE3N starts off with a flashback event featuring Inspector Martin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) & John Roy (Amitabh Bachchan). This is then followed by the religious daily visit of John Roy to the police station to meet Inspector Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan), regarding the kidnapping & killing of his granddaughter Angela Roy. The story then oscillates between the past & the present. Amidst all this, there also exists the story of the guilt filled Inspector – turned -Priest Martin Das, the very man who was in charge of Angela Roy’s case. While the police department (including Inspector Martin Das) gives up totally on the Angela Roy’s case, John Roy simply refuses to do so and vows to his wheelchair ridden wife that he will not take rest until he nails the innocent Angela Roy’s dreaded kidnapper & murderer. Around 8 years later, there occurs a kidnapping of a school going kid Ronny. The mysterious part about this kidnapping is that, it is totally similar to that of Angela Roy. That’s when the trio of Father Martin, Inspector Sarita Sarkar & John Roy set out to search the masterminded smart criminal. While Father Martin & Inspector Sarita Sarkar go the legal way, John Roy, despite his old age sets out on his own to nab the criminal.

Director Ribhu Dasgupta seems to be a novice as far as the “Whodunit” thriller genre is concerned. He loses his directorial grip from “The Start” to The End”. One can’t even say that he has extracted good work from “The Cast” & “The Crew” as they are all well – known names in their respective arena.

Performance wise its once again Amitabh Bachchan who delivers a sterling act. Indeed he deserves a standing ovation in film after film. After Piku he adds one more feather to his histrionics cap. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is perfect in whatever he has been given to perform. But obviously his latent talent has not been fully tapped. While Vidya Balan is as usual superb in her cameo act too. The supporting actors are adequate and fill the bill.

Tail Piece: TE3N will really have to struggle at the Box Office Turnstiles to make its mark. audience.

FIR filed against JD(S) MLA

June 15, 2016 by Nasheman

MLA Mallikarjun Khuba

Bengaluru: An FIR has been filed against JD(S) MLA Mallikarjun Khuba, who in a sting operation was purportedly seen negotiating a money deal in exchange for votes ahead of the June 11 biennial elections to four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka.

The First Information Report(FIR) was filed by Karnataka Legislative Assembly Secretary S Murthy, also the Returning Officer, on the directions of Election Commission of India.

“I have filed a complaint today and an FIR was lodged at Vidhana Soudha Police station against MLA Mallikarjun Khuba and others under Prevention of Corruption Act and section 171(B) of the Indian Penal Code,” Murthy told PTI today.

He said the complaint was filed based on the sting operation by a news channel in which Khuba is seen purportedly discussing an amount of over Rs five crore in exchange for votes.

Khuba represents Basavakalyana constituency in Bidar district.

Deciding against cancelling or postponing the June 11 Rajya Sabha elections to four seats from Karnataka, the Election Commission had said it “cannot ignore to take cognisance of certain illegal activities” as appeared in media, including the TV channels.

In its June 9 order, the EC had said that Khuba, being a public servant, “may also be deemed to have committed an offence under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for seeking bribe for performing his constitutional function as such public servant of electing a member of the Rajya Sabha.

“…therefore, the Commission holds that an FIR be lodged against Khuba and others and the whole matter be entrusted to the CBI for such deeper probe so that all those who may be involved in such nefarious activities are exposed and duly punished under the law,” it had said.

The June 2 sting by two channels purportedly showed MLAs negotiating a money deal in exchange for their votes in the biennial elections to four Rajya Sabha seats from the state.

JD(S) had demanded cancelling the polls, while Congress and BJP were opposed to change in the poll schedule.

Union Minister Nirmala Seetharaman and Congress’ Jairam Ramesh, Oscar Fernandes and K C Ramamurthy won the Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka in the June 11 election, highlighted by cross-voting from the JDS.

Cabinet approves civil aviation policy

June 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Hindu Mahasabha airhostess

New Delhi: The much-awaited national civil aviation policy that seeks to strengthen regional connectivity and tap the sector’s high growth potential was Wednesday cleared by the Union Cabinet.

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said the policy is a “game changer” and that the country’s aviation sector is poised to become the world’s third largest by 2022.

The policy has been finalised after nearly eight months since the Ministry came out with the revised draft in October 2015 and follows many rounds of deliberations with stakeholders. The NDA government had for the first time unveiled the policy draft in November 2014.

“NDA government clears India’s first ever integrated National Civil Aviation Policy. This will be a game-changer for the sector,” Raju said in a tweet.

In another tweet, the Minister said India would be the third largest civil aviation market by 2022. “To achieve this, we need right intentions, vision, planning and execution,” he added.

Significantly, India’s domestic air traffic market logged the fastest growth in the world for the 13th consecutive month in April. The market grew at nearly 22 per cent during the month.

“India’s domestic traffic soared 21.8 per cent, marking the 20th month of double-digit traffic growth and the 13th consecutive month it has led the domestic markets,” global airlines body, International Air Transport Association (IATA) had said last month.

Initially, the policy was expected to be finalised in the last financial year as certain proposals were to be in effect from April 1, 2016.

However, the government had been moving back and forth on the policy seeking to sort out the differences among stakeholders including on 5/20 norm.

In the run-up to the framing of policy, various provisions including the issue of international flying norm witnessed extensive debate, with legacy carriers opposing any changes to the rule, while start-up airlines frantically demanding its scrapping.

Significantly, AirAsia Berhad –a key stakeholder in AirAsia India had recently said that it was confident of the Government scrapping the norm.

“…the ruling (5/20 norm) is expected to be revoked along with a new National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) to be introduced in the near future, given massive lobbying against it,” AirAsia Berhad said in its 2015 annual report released yesterday.

Play review: ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar’ is a must see play for Gen X

June 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar

Producer – Director – Writer – Set Designer -Costume – Makeup: Rashmi Sharma Artistes: Rashmi Sharma, Zeus Paranjape, Vedika Bhandari, Sadiq Abbas Rizvi, Revant Bhatia, Paritosh Tiwari & Pooja Muralia Music: Nitin Hivarkar Lights: Avinash Kumar Production Manager: Vipin Pandey

“Laughing while falling in Love again because it transcends all” avers Rashmi Sharma, the founder of PGT group. Love as we all know brings two imperfect and completely different people together. It transcends age, time, place, behaviour & worldly concerns. Some say Love happens only once while some say Love can happen again…….Can we fall in Love again?????

Progressive Theatre Group presents Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar directed & penned by Rashmi Sharma a well – known name in theatre circle. The play is a heart warming romantic comedy satire on love & commitment between 2 odd people with nothing in common. Asha‘s life took a turn when she falls for a married struggling actor Aakash Chatterjee. She decides to move in with him against the society norms and has a daughter named Mishti from him out of wedlock. 13 years later, the comfortable world she craved for herself comes crashing down when Aakash abandons her due to his weaknesses & failures as an actor. Heart Broken Asha struggles to stand on her own feet. Asha who is a trained Kathak dancer decides to use her talent to impart Kathak training to students to earn a living for her as well as for her daughter. When she was about to give up on Love & relationships she hears a knock on the door, probably a knock on her heart. Monty Fernandez enters her life as a storm who was again a struggling actor waiting to change her life in the most amazing way. Asha who does not want to depend on another man again especially an actor created walls around herself but in vain. The magic of love unfolded and certain incidents happen which leads them to care for each other, eventually leading them to fall in love. She does not want Monty to be straddled to a woman with a 13 year old child. But Monty who was convinced that he has found a woman of his dreams in Asha was not ready to let her go. They both express their love for each other but fate was repeating itself. Monty got an opportunity to act in a film to be shot abroad. Asha & Misti are shattered again. Will Monty come back? Can Asha find true love a 2nd time? These questions forms the crux of the story of Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar.

The script is well documented and narrated by director Rashmi Sharma. She has succeeded in leading the audiences towards the realisation of her vision. The overall creative interpretation of the script is good. Soulful music is the highlight of the play. I left the theatre humming the song. The music touched the chords of my heart.

In terms of acting Rashmi Sharma & Zeus Paranjape nailed it. Their act was subtle & convincing. I could feel the ups & downs they were going through in their life. If your true love is knocking on your heart and you are confused because of your bad past experience, this is a play for you. One can fall in love a 2nd time. There is no particular time when true love happens, it can happen anytime and at any age. Love does not need to be perfect it just needs to be true.

Movie Review: ‘Housefull 3’ is like a staple diet for masses & utter nonsensical film for the classes

June 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Housefull 3

Director: Sajid – Farhad
Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Lisa Haydon, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Chunkey Pandey, Nikitin Dheer, Sameer Kochhar & Arav Chowdhary
Music: Sohail Sen, Mika Singh, Tanishk Bagchi, Milind Gaba & Sharib – Toshi

The Housefull movie franchise has always been looked forward too, but the next two instalment namely Housefull 2 & Housefull 3 including the 1st one Housefull has no doubt been lapped up by the masala entertainment oriented masses, yet it has never proved to be a delight for the classy cine goer’s as well as the critics. Yet incidentally speaking. Housefull & Housefull 2 had proved to be a runaway blockbuster hits and Housefull 3 is already on its way to cross the 100 Crore mark. So sorry to say but let the classy cine goer’s & critics turn up their noses at Housefull 3 too, but the masses are all set to lap it up.

The Scripted scenario of Housefull 3 starts off in the plush city of London where a gang of 3 robbers steal diamonds from a museum in broad daylight but get busted by the cops, thus landing up in jail. This is followed by the introduction of the self – confessed “lucky papa” of London, Batook Patel (Boman Irani) and his 3 darling daughters Ganga Patel (Jaqueline Fernandez), Jamuna Patel (Lisa Haydon) & Saraswati Patel (Nargis Fakhri). While Ganga is an MD in psychoanalysis, Jamuna is a wax figure maker & Saraswati is socially connected to a physically challenged society. Despite being the lucky father to 3 beautiful & dutiful grown up daughters, Batook Patel just does not want them to get married, for reasons best known to him. On the other hand, while the 3 daughters behave extremely cultured & civilized before their father, behind his back, they become just the opposite, which means ultra – glam & modern party animals. In other words, Ganga becomes Gracy, Jamuna becomes Jenny and Saraswati becomes Sarah. Besides being ultra – glam, all the 3 also have a boyfriend each in the form of Sandy (Akshay Kumar) a footballer with split personality disorder, rapper Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan) & a car racer Teddy (Riteish Deshmukh). Because of the existing situations & circumstances that prevail in the house, getting married to their respective boyfriends looks like an impossible dream for the 3 girls. Lured by Ganga, Jamuna & Saraswati’s strong financial background, when Sandy, Bunty & Teddy convince the girls to marry them, all the 3 girls reject their proposals citing an astrologer’s prediction. Amidst all this, enters the dreaded Mumbai Don Urja Nagre (Jackie Shroff), who has a secret agenda of his own.

Director duo Sajid – Farhad have wielded the megaphone, apart from scripting it with Rajan Agarwal in lieu with dialogues by K. Subhash, for Housefull 3. And the less said about their writing & directional skills the better. The gags, the situations and even the bland humour has been lifted directly from the social media sites which appears as stale as a week long over kept food. Sajid – Farhad had seriously erred in their debut directorial outing namely Entertainment and in their 2nd directorial offering namely Housefull 3 too, they have erred seriously thereby driving a nail straight in their own directorial coffin. Need I say anything more?

The performances off all the actor’s can be described in just 1 word. Akshay Kumar (Comfortable), Riteish Deshmukh (Enjoyable), Abhishek Bachchan (Decent), Jacqueline Fernandez (Ok), Nargis Fakhri (So – So), Lisa Haydon (Forgettable), Boman Irani (Perfect), Jackie Shroff (Interesting), Chunky Pandey (Funny), Nikitin Dheer (Good), Sameer Kochhar (Unimpressive) & Arav Chowdhary (Promising). That’s it.

Tail Piece: Housefull 3 is strictly recommended for lovers of such over – the -top non – sensical cinema. While the rest of the gentry are humbly requested to stay away for their own good.
