Salman Khan acquitted in blackbuck, chinkara poaching cases

July 25, 2016 by Nasheman

salman khan

Jodhpur: In a huge relief for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, the Rajasthan high court on Monday acquitted him in the Jodhpur blackbuck and chinkara poaching cases.

Khan was accused of killing a blackbuck and a chinkara in two separate incidents in 1998.

The actor had appealed to the Rajasthan high court challenging a lower court’s verdict that convicted him and sentenced him to one and five years in jail for the two cases of poaching.

The high court completed hearing the cases in the last week of May but reserved its decision at the time.

Khan was accused of killing one of the animals in Bhawad on the outskirts of Jodhpur on September 26, 1998, and another in Ghoda Farms on September 28, 1998.

At that time of the alleged incidents Khan was shooting for the film “Hum Sath Sath Hain” in Jodhpur.

Kohli hits unbeaten 143 as India reach 302/4 at stumps on Day 1 vs Windies

July 22, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

kohli

Antigua: Leading from the front, skipper Virat Kohli smashed his 12th Test century to guide India to an impressive 302/4 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Sir Viv Richards stadium here on Thursday.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 143 off 197 balls alongside Ravichandran Ashwin’s 22 not out off 69 balls.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India were off to a disappointing start, losing the wicket of opener Murali Vijay (7) few minutes after start of play and Cheteshwar Pujara (16) cheaply just after lunch.

But Dhawan and Kohli put on a 105-run partnership for the third wicket to rescue the visitors.

The hosts struck just at the stroke of tea dismissing set batsman Dhawan to have India at 179/3 in 54.5 overs.

The fall of Vijay brought in No.3 Pujara, who along with southpaw Shikhar Dhawan (84) forged an unbeaten 58-run stand for the second wicket when the umpires called for lunch.

But soon after lunch, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo dismissed Pujara to end the 60-run partnership for the second wicket.

Pacer Shannon Gabriel drew first blood for the hosts with an accurate delivery on middle and off which climbed on Vijay, forcing him to nick and was well caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at second slip in his third attempt.

Vijay consumed 26 deliveries for his seven runs which included a boundary.

Dhawan, who has been long due for runs started vulnerably getting a thick edge off a short ball from Gabriel but survived only to flourish with a flurry of shots on the off-side.

The Delhi left-hander seems to have found his groove, with his knock coming off 74 deliveries and comprising four boundaries.

Pujara, meanwhile, stood rock solid taking 63 balls for his patient 14 on a pitch which had a bit of bounce for both spinners and pacers.

Earlier, keeping his five-bowler strategy intact, Kohli opted for three seamers in Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami while picking leg-spinner Amit Mishra alongside offie Ravichandran Ashwin.

The batting line-up relatively remains the same with Dhawan and Vijay at the top followed by Pujara, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. Stumper Wriddhiman Saha will bat at No.6.

For the hosts, skipper Jason Holder has decided to go in with six batsmen and four bowlers, with middle-order batsman Roston Chase making his debut.

After the dismissal of Vijay and Pujara, Dhawan and Kohli played on well to complete the 100-run partnership for the third wicket.

Both the batsman completed their half-centuries and stayed on course for a big one.

But the 105-run partnership came to an end in the 55th over when Bishoo struck for the second time in the day to dismiss the left-handed batsman and take the advantage away from India, who had so far had a good session.

After tea, Kohli kept his sublime form going as he along with Ajinkya Rahane (22) helped the visitors cross the 200-run mark with ease.

But Bishoo showed his class yet again dismissing Rahane in the 68th over of the play to put breaks on India’s scoring.

Despite wickets falling at other end, the skipper played his natural game and with night-watchman Ashwin, kept the run flow going and helped India cross the 300-run mark at end of day’s play and stay on course for a big first-innings total on the second day.

India have won both their previous two Test series against the West Indies in 2006 and 2011.

Golfer Amandeep wins Hero women’s Pro championship

July 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Golfer Amandeep

Bengaluru: Promising golfer Amandeep Drall carded one under 71 on the final day to grab a comfortable victory in the KGA women’s Pro championship at the Karnataka Golf Association here on Friday.

Kolkata talent Neha Tripathi came second with a total score of 224 whereas Kapurthala’s Gursimar Badwal finished third with 225.

Amandeep had a shaky start and carded a bogey on the very first hole. The professional from Panchkula, however, regained her composure immediately and carded consecutive birdies on the second and third holes. She dropped another shot on the seventh hole in her front nine.

On her return journey, she carded two more birdies on the 11th and 15th holes, while dropping a shot on the 18th hole to finish the round with a total score of 213.

In the process, she claimed her second title of the season with a comfortable margin of eleven shots.

Neha too carded one under 71 on the day to take the second position. She started with aplomb, firing three consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, while dropping a single shot on the 8th in her front nine.

She carded two more bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes along with a double on the 10th in the latter half. However, an eagle on the 11th with a birdie on the 14th helped her to retrieve the situation, and finish the round with a total score of 224, one shot clear of Gursimar Badwal.

Gursimar had an indifferent day in the park and carded five bogeys on the seventh, ninth, 15th, 16th and 17th holes. However, two birdies on the 14th and 18th helped her to control the damage and she finished the round with a score of 3 over 75.

Local golfers Sharmila Nicollet and Trisha Sunil finished fourth and fifth with scores of 227 and 228 respectively after the final round.

The Tour now moves to Prestige Golfshire for the 11th Leg to be played from Tuesday.

by Al Jazeera

Some 2,977 people have perished in the Mediterranean Sea so far this year, with people dying at a rate of around 20 a day since March.

The benchmark of nearly 3,000 was reached faster this year than in any previous year since the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean began, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Friday.

“The 3,000 mark will undoubtedly arrive this year months earlier than in either of the previous two years,” IOM spokesman Joel Millman said, adding that an equivalent number of dead was not reached until September in 2014 and October last year.

More than 250,000 people have reached Europe since the start of the year, the majority from sub-Saharan Africa and travelling dangerous land and sea routes from Libya to Italy.

Travel along safer routes between Turkey and Greece has “almost disappeared”, Millman said.

On Thursday, the bodies of 17 people were recovered from the Mediterranean south of Sicily by the Italian coastguard, while 22 corpses were discovered at the bottom of a smuggler boat the previous day.

“Survivors spent several hours with the bodies on board. Many of them are too traumatised to say what happened. It is not yet clear how these [people] have died,” Jens Pagotto, head of search and rescue operations for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said on Thursday.

The victims, 21 women and a man, were said to be lying at the back of a dinghy in a pool of fuel. Pagotto said the victims may have been overcome by fumes in the boat.
In total, around 1,700 people were rescued from rubber dinghies and rickety boats on Wednesday and Thursday.

One more official attempts suicide in Karnataka

July 22, 2016 by Nasheman

e-vijaya

Hassan: A Karnataka Administrative Service officer in Hassan today allegedly tried to commit suicide even as the controversy over alleged suicide of two DySPs that put the Siddaramaiah government in a spot is yet to die down.

Assistant Commissioner E Vijaya allegedly attempted suicide by hanging at her residence here, officials said. They said Vijaya had reportedly sent a message to an Additional SP, who is her neighbour, about committing suicide, and she soon rushed to her house and rescued the officer.

Vijaya is now undergoing treatment at a Hospital. Her mother Sumitramma alleged that pressure from higher officials and protest by few groups had led her to attempt suicide.

Vijaya was recently transferred as Administrative Officer of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, against which she had moved the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal which stayed the order.

Several organisations had protested against her alleging that she was “corrupt” and had also demanded reinstatement of Nagaraj whom she had replaced.

Hassan MLA H S Prakash, who visited the hospital, told a local news channel that “she is still under observation, but doctors have said that she is out of danger.”

Earlier this week, sub-inspector with Vijayanagar police station in Bengaluru Roopa Tambad had allegedly attempted suicide by taking an overdose of over-the-counter pills, after being pulled up by a senior officer in connection with a case she was handling. She is now undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Mangaluru DySP M K Ganapathy was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a room at a lodge in Madikeri on July 7, triggering a huge political storm as he had named a Minister and two IPS officials in his pre-death declaration.

In another case on July 5, the body of Chikkamagaluru sub-division DySP Kallappa Handibag (35), accused of kidnapping a person for ransom, was found hanging in his father-in-law’s home at Murgod in Belagavi district. His family had alleged harassment and conspiracy by senior officials.

Uproar in Parliament over AAP member’s video

July 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Bhagwant Mann

New Delhi: Both houses of parliament witnessed uproarious scenes on Friday, leading to their adjournment, over the video footage circulated by Aam Aadmi Party Lok Sabha member Bhagwant Mann.

As soon as the house assembled, several BJP members including Kirit Somaiya, R.K. Singh and others including from the Akali Dal were up on their feet demanding action against Mann.

The AAP MP from Sangrur in Punjab wanted to say something but nothing could be heard in the din.

Mann on Thursday shot a video clip of his journey from home to parliament, including going past the various security pickets, and uploaded it on the social media, drawing flak from various quarters for putting Parliament security in peril.

The Speaker summoned Mann to her chamber to explain his position.

The AAP lawmaker later appeared before the Speaker.

The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha also with members including Anand Sharma of the Congress) and Sitaram Yechury of the CPI-M maintaining that the issue amounted to breach of security and privilege of members of Parliament.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi too described the matter as serious and said the government and the Lok Sabha Speaker are seized of it.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien said there is no doubt about the seriousness of the issue. However, as pandemonium continued for a while, Kurien adjourned the house till 12 noon.

Earlier, outside Parliament, Naqvi told reporters that “the circulation of such video footage was against parliamentary rules at a time when terrorists are looking for opportunities to attack”.

“Giving out such sensitive information and video footage of sensitive areas of Parliament is wrong.”

In the video that went viral, Mann is seen giving commentary as his vehicle crosses security barricades, while going to Parliament. “I’ll today show you something you would not have seen earlier,” Mann said at the beginning of the video.

Inside Parliament, he goes into the room where the process of selection of questions for the Zero Hour is done. As he describes the process, a security official is heard telling him not to take photographs. “I’ll not take photo… will maintain confidentiality,” Mann says in his reply.

Kejriwal meets victims in Gujarat, calls BJP govt ‘anti-Dalit’

July 22, 2016 by Nasheman

kejriwal-dalit

Rajkot: Terming the BJP government in Gujarat as “anti-Dalit”, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today accused the state administration of colluding in the incident of attack on dalit men by cow vigilantes as he met the victims and their families.

The Aam Aadmi Party Chief claimed that it was not an “isolated” incident and “atrocities” on dalits were being committed across Gujarat. He warned that the BJP government will be “taught a lesson” by members of all communities if it does not end its “oppression”.

“The beating happened in front of a police station in the presence of police…it means this is happening at the behest of the administration. Why is the police silent? Why is it involved? This means there is some direction from the top administration,” Kejriwal told reporters after visiting the victims of the July 11 incident at Rajkot civil hospital.

“The BJP government in Gujarat is inflicting atrocities on Dalits, (it) is anti-Dalit,” alleged Kejriwal whose visit cames a day after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi meet the victims. Two days back, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel had also visited the place.

The Delhi Chief Minister also questioned the state government’s intent to carry out an unbiased investigation into the matter. The AAP national convener said only 17 persons have been arrested when about 40-50 people were allegedly involved in the July 11 incident, and pointed out that no charge sheet has yet been filed in the 2012 killing of Dalits by police at Thangadh in Surendranagar district.

Three Dalits were killed in the police firing in 2012. “People apprehend that the arrests could be an eyewash and the accused may be allowed to go scot-free later,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal also stoked a controversy when he met Dalit youth Kanti Mulji Vala, arrested for the murder of head constable Pankaj Amrelia, at the Rajkot civil hospital where he is admitted.

Asked why he meet a murder accused, the Delhi CM said he will also meet the family members of the constable at Amreli. He said those who attempted suicide told him that “atrocities against Dalits are growing day by day in Gujarat”. “I asked them why they are committing suicide. They said atrocities against Dalits are growing day by day. Then I told them that suicide is not the way out, we will have to fight together,” he stressed.

He demanded compensation and government jobs for the victims and the youths who had attempted suicide. Kejriwal also pressed for swift action against all the accused. “I have been told that false cases are being lodged against the (dalit) youths who are agitating by the authorities as they did during the peaceful Patidar quota agitation,” Kejriwal claimed.

After meeting the victims of the beating incident and people who attempted suicide during the protest, Kejriwal will also visit the victims’ families at Mota Samadhiyala village, where the incident of brutal assault on Dalits for skinning a dead cow took place on July 11. The thrashing incident had sparked a statewide protest by Dalit community members which continued for three days leading to arson and loss of public property.

Movie Review: ‘Kiran Kulkarni vs Kiran Kulkarni’ is heart touching

July 22, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Kiran Kulkarni vs Kiran Kulkarni

Producer: Kanchan Adhikari & Om Gahlot
Director: Kanchan Adhikari
Star Cast: Subodh Bhave, Kranti Redkar, Avishkar Darwhekar, Priya Marathe & Namrata Awate
Genre: Romantic Comedy

Of late Marathi Cinema is really coming of age for trying out different genres of filmmaking. Gone are the rural lavni’s & tamasha days. In the same vein director Kanchan Adhikari’s Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni is a zara hatke triangular romantic comedy drama.

The scripted scenario of Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni unfolds with Kiran Kulkarni (Subodh Bhave) who is a successful employee of an IIT Company and is about to join his Company’s Germany branch. Just then he becomes a victim of a credit card fraud, due to the lapse of his wife, and gets framed for a murder too in a Pub as his Credit card was traced over there. Needless to say he looses his job & his Germany trip too. So his immediate boss (Mohan Joshi) advises him to catch the culprit redhanded. Kiran goes to Lonavala and bumps into the credit card fraud girl Kasturi (Kranti Redkar). From here on the story of Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni takes a whole new twist.

As the title Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni hints it is not at all a courtroom drama at all. On the contrary the film starts off with a credit card fraud but somewhere along the way director Kanchan Adhikari focuses more on the heart touching romantic triangle. Being a woman director Kanchan Adhikari seems a little biased as she has given an author backed role to her lead heroine Kranti Redkar thereby not really using the overall potential of an extremely talented and gifted actor like Subodh Bhave who has already proven his versatility in films like Katyar Kaljhat Ghusli to name just one.

Performance wise Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni is no doubt a Kranti Redkar film all the way. As Kasturi she is genuine, she is funny, she is witty and a little filmy too. Her comic timing is just seen to be believed. In fact she has delivered a par excellence act. Next in line is of course Subodh Bhave who is simply outstanding in the title role of Kiran Kulkarni. And the actress who enacts the role of his wife is good but she hardly gets a scope to prove her worth. Rest of the characters are ok and they do contribute in carrying the film forward.

In the end one can only say that Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni is a full on non – stop entertaining film for the masses as well as the classes. After a long, long time Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni is a clean and wholesome family entertainer.

Movie Review: ‘Ishq Click’ is disappointing

July 22, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Ishq Click

Producers: Ajay Jaiswal and Satish Tripathi
Director: Anil Ballani
Starcast: Adhyayan Suman, Sara Loren, Sanskkriti Jain etc
Genre: Drama

The scenario of Ishq Click opens with Aditya Vardhan (Adhyayan Suman), a professional photographer, who has come to Darjeeling on a Goverment
assignment. Over here Aditya meets an orphan girl Sophia Diaz (Sara Loren) and starts wooing her. He then invites her to Mumbai to try her hands in the Fashion world. Sophia agrees and with Aditya’s help she becomes a most sought after model and even has a live – in relationship with him. Next Aditya meets Ira (Sanskriti Jain) daughter of an Internationally famed photographer. Now Aditya woos Ira to further his career as a photographer. Soon enough he succeeds and even gets married to Ira. With his new found success, pride and arrogance overtakes Aditya’s mind and this becomes the cause of his rapid downfall and his life, as well as the audiences, becomes full of miseries.

Director Anil Ballani has seriously erred in his directorial commitment for Ishq Click as he has made a hotch potch of this such a simple triangular drama. Besides sadly enough nothing seems to have gone in his favour, neither his behind the scenes amateurish team of technicians nor the, on the screen team of, actors.
But all said and done a well deserved mention must go to the film’s cinematographer and the film’s music composer.

Performance wise all the trio of actors Adhyayan Suman, Sara Loren and Sanskkriti Jain needs to take a crash course in acting to brush up their non – existent acting skills. Not only these even the so called supporting actors have failed to lend an adequate support to enliven the proceedings on the silver screen.

On the whole one can at least say that the first half of Ishq Click is somewhat tolerable with one or two good songs. But the second half of Ishq Click drags on and on to such an extent that it crosses all the limits of boredom.

Movie Review: ‘And Jara Hatke’ is daringly different

July 22, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

and Zara Hatke

Banner: Eros International and Ravi Jadhav Films
Producer: Krishika Lulla and Ravi Jadhav
Director: Prakash Kunte
Star Cast : Mrinal Kulkarni, Siddharth Menon, Shivani Rangole and Indraneil Sengupta
Genre: Family Drama

The screenplay of &Zara Hatke centres around Nallu (Indraneil Sengupta) & Meera (Mrinal Kulkarni) who happens to be old friends albeit not exactly romantically inclined. After some time they go off on their own ways with Nallu marrying Swati and Meera marrying Dilip. Both Nallu and Meera meet accidentally years later when Nallu’s wife Swati has expired leaving behind a teenage son Nishant (Siddharth Menon) and Meera’s husband Dilip divorces her and leaves his teenaged daughter Astha (Shivani Rangole) in her care. Nallu and Meera now take a mutual decision to get married to each other. When they announce their decision to their respective family members all hell breaks loose with an unexpected twist which forms the core crux of the story and hence the title of the movie, &Zara Hat Ke.

Director Prakash Kunte’s debut outing was Coffee Ani Barach Kahi which was also an unconventional movie as per the usual standards of the Marathi Cinema and coming to think of it Prakash Kunte’s second outing &Zara Hat Ke is also no exception to the rule, which again is a bold and daring effort.

Performance wise Mrinal Kulkarni excellently portrays both the happiness of a woman in love as well as a woman in a dilemma. Indraneil Sengupta is slightly unconvincing due to lack of the grasping power of the Marathi language and how he deals with it is very amusing. On the other hand both the actors Shivani Rangole and Siddharth Menon are just perfect as Mrinalini and Indraneil’s respective off springs. Indeed they have given a good account of themselves in their respective roles.

In conclusion one can only predict that the film &Zara Hatke may win a lot of accolades from the classy cine goers and may also garner a lot of critical acclaim but at the Box Office turnstiles it does not stand even an iota of chance.
