BJP, its friends knew about demonetisation move: Oppn in Rajya Sabha

November 16, 2016 by Nasheman

Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Opposition parties today alleged selective leak of information on demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee notes to ‘friends of BJP’ and demanded making public the names of those who had bought gold and foreign exchange of over Rs one crore since April.

Initiating a debate after listed business was suspended to take up a discussion on the November 8 decision to withdraw old higher denomination currency, Anand Sharma (Cong) used wit and humour to attack Modi for being insensitive to problems caused to the common man.

He asked the Prime Minister to state where he got Rs 23,000-24,000 crore, estimated by the International Money Watch Group, for his Lok Sabha elections.

He also asked if cheque or credit card payments were made to organise his rally in Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh a few days ago.

Alleging that the information on demonetisation was selectively leaked, he said, “your BJP units have deposited crores (just before the November 8 decision).”

As the debate was in progress, BSP chief Mayawati demanded the presence of the Prime Minister in the House to hear out the Opposition parties and address their concerns. Supporting her, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said since Lok Sabha has adjourned for the day, Modi should hear out at least the major parties.

Quoting media reports, Sharma said State Bank of India – the country’s largest lender – knew of the decision way back in March and a Gujarati newspaper had in April published a report of move to withdraw 500 and 1000 rupee notes.

He demanded a probe into “how many people bought more than Rs 1 crore of foreign currency and bullion” since April. “This is a serious issue… you never kept secrecy (about the decision),” Sharma said.

The “ill-timed” and “ill-conceived” move had unleashed “economic anarchy” in the country and benefited a few, he said, adding that to fight blackmoney created by higher denomination currency, a bigger Rs 2000 note has been brought which is similar to the paper on which ‘churan’ is sold and “shed colour” was brought.

“Your government is insensitive,” he said adding Modi was riding a bullet train in Japan when old, women and common man were queueing up at banks at 3 am in the morning to get currency to buy their daily needs.

Sharma said Modi had in his Goa speech had stated that those standing in line at banks were those involved in 2G spectrum and coal scam as well as holding blackmoney.

“I condemn the Prime Minister for calling the poor standing in queue for his Rs 4000-4,500, blackmoney holders and scamster,” he said.

Referring to Modi’s statement in Goa last week that certain forces were out to eliminate him, the Congress leader asked him to name the conspirators wanting to eliminate Prime Minister of India. Congress will not tolerate anyone planning to harm the Prime Minister of the country, he said.

Taking a dig at the Modi, he said someone who “changes clothes five times a day”, has become Prime Minister and travels around the globe was “calling himself a sanyasi and tapasvi”.

Sharma demanded that the names of persons holding accounts in Swiss bank and those revealed in the Leichtenstein and HSBC lists should be made public. The names of bank loan defaulters above Rs 5000 crore should also be made public.

While the decision had put the common man to immense hardship by way of having to stand in long queues to lay hands on valid currency to meet daily needs, the information about demonetisation was selectively leaked to the “friends of BJP,” Sharma alleged.

The move had branded 86 per cent of the currency in circulation blackmoney and “everyone a criminal,” he said adding when Modi announced the plan it was expected that adequate arrangements would be made for dispensing new notes.

So banks and ATMs were shut on November 9 but the expectation of normalcy from next day were dashed with queues only getting longer by the day.

The government policy was to “benefit those who are your friends and hurt those who question you,” he said adding an atmosphere has been created in the country where questions cannot be asked and those doing so branded anti-nationals.

“The magnanimous Prime Minister allowed Rs 4000 of old currency to be changed… what right does the Constitution give the government to place restrictions on withdrawal of ones hard-earned money,” he asked, adding one has to “beg to be allowed to withdraw his own money.”

He said former RBI Governor IG Patel had written about the government’s decision to demonetise currency in 1978 and it would be absurd to think that all ill-gotten money is kept in cash and not invested in real estate, billion, equities or foreign exchange.

Modi, Sharma said, had reasoned that withdrawal of the higher denomination currency to fight against blackmoney, terrorist funding and counterfeit currency.

Congress is unequivocally opposed to blackmoney and opposes any force that print counterfeit currency.

Sharma said the government in one stroke took away 86.4 per cent of the over Rs 16 lakh crore currency in circulation. “Did the government think that 86 per cent of the currency in circulation was counterfeit or blackmoney,” he asked.

Karnataka would soon take top slot for women entrepreneurship: Siddaramaiah

November 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Rolling out red carpet to women entrepreneurs, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday expressed confidence that with several initiatives taken, the state would soon occupy the top slot for women entrepreneurship.

He urged women entrepreneurs to explore entrepreneurial opportunities in Karnataka and make the state their base.

“I am happy to note that Karnataka’s diversity ratio in employment and entrepreneurship is amongst the best in India. Our eco-system is regarded as the benchmark for women to live and work and I am happy that we are in the right direction,” Siddaramaiah said at the event “Think Big 2016”.

He said that according to the fourth Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSME) census, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have 51.9 per cent of the country’s women-owned business indicating the potential that exists in our State and country.

“I am sure with the initiatives taken up, Karnataka would soon be in the top slot…,” he said.

“Think Big 2016”, which is projected to be Asia’s largest women entrepreneurship and economic empowerment summit, is being organised by Karnataka government, together with WEConnect International in India and Thinkthrough Consulting (TTC).

According to the organisers, the event is aimed at bringing together more than 2,000 women entrepreneurs, 300 Industry leaders and 400 businesses and 35 top banks to connect women entrepreneurs across the globe with the “thriving” business ecosystem in Karnataka.

Speaking on special attention being given to women entrepreneurs to encourage enterprise creation and industrial capacity building, he said, there has been unprecedented response from them.

“Initially we thought of developing one Women’s Park at Harohally near Bangalore. But, surprisingly there was a great response from all over the State to set up parks for women.

Going by the enthusiasm generated amongst women entrepreneurs, I am sure we would have Women’s Park all over the State soon,” he added.

Sorry to say but Rock On 2 has absolutely no entertainment value

November 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

rock-on-2

Banner: Excel Entertainment
Producer: Farhan Akhtar & Ritesh Sidhwani
Director: Shujaat Saudagar
Star Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli
Shashank Arora, Shahana Goswami, Kumud Mishra et al
Music: Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy

Debutant director Shujaat Saudagar has aimlessly decided to carry forward the torch of the prequel Rock On but with no particular destination in sight. The prequel was at least entertaining but the sequel Rock On 2 tests your patience beyond endurance limit. Need anything more be said on this front?

The scripted scenario of Rock On 2 starts off with the voiceover narration of ‘KD’ aka Killer Drummer aka Kedar Zaveri (Purab Kohli). The story then mirrors upon the distances covered by Magik band’s members from the prequel till today. Aditya Shroff aka Adi (Farhan Akhtar) gets settled in Shillong to lead an isolated life as “repentance” over a certain mistake. It is here that he finds peace by running his self – initiated “Farmers Co-operative” and a school for the poor children. Even though “Farmers’ Co-operative” works selflessly towards the benefits of the farmers, it just does not go well with the local Governing officer of that area. On the other hand, Joseph Mascarenhas aka Joe (Arjun Rampal) becomes a successful entrepreneur as well as a judge in one of the TV reality shows. One day, on the eve of Adi’s birthday, the entire “Magik” team springs up a surprise by paying him a visit in the North East to celebrate his birthday. Despite the happy mood, there looms an atmosphere of tension, anger, repentance & anxiety amidst everyone. One fine day, “Magik” sees the inclusion of a struggling musician Uday (Shashank Arora) along with Jiah Sharma (Shraddha Kapoor) as its new members. On the eve of the performance, Jiah chickens out on stage itself and is unable to perform because of her father’s resistance to western music. On the other hand, Adi’s adopted village in Shillong gets gutted down due to forest fire. And the money given by the Central Government for the welfare aid of the affected farmers gets gulped down by a corrupt Government officer in Shillong. This is when Adi & his rock band plan to organise a rock concert in Shillong in order to highlight the plight of the helpless villagers.

The man who had gained ample recognition in the ad world has suddenly lost all interest in the entire proceedings of Rock On 2. Yes director Shujaat Saudagar’s non – directorial skills is evident from the fact that he has literally & directorially sleep walked through the entire duration of the film. In short Rock On 2 has confusions galore and it meanders pointlessly from “The Start” to “The End”.

Performance wise Farhan Akhtar indeed tries his level best to get the entire praising action focussed on him but totally in vain. Arjun Rampal simply seems to have wasted his little bit of talented energy on a non – de script movie and come to think of it he had bagged a National Award for his perfect characterisation in the prequel tItled Rock. On. Purab Kohli tries to bring in some genuine emotion, but, because he barely gets any space, his attempts go wasted. On the other hand, there’s Shraddha Kapoor, who looks endlessly lost in the film. She never gets a grip of her poorly written character Jiah, who is just wandering around in the film. While the rest of the actors like Shashank Arora, Prachi Desai, Shahana Goswami & Kumud Mishra also barely manage to make their presence felt.

Tail Piece: Sadly enough Rock On 2 has no story, no good music and not even an iota entertainment value. Ultimately speaking the film will prove to be an absolute disaster at the Box – Office turnstiles.

US ‘may have committed war crimes in Afghanistan’

November 15, 2016 by Nasheman

ICC report suggests US soldiers and CIA may have used “cruel and violent” techniques on detainees.

US armed forces and the CIA may have committed war crimes by torturing detainees in Afghanistan, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has said in a report.

“Members of US armed forces appear to have subjected at least 61 detained persons to torture, cruel treatment, outrages upon personal dignity on the territory of Afghanistan between 1 May 2003 and 31 December 2014,” says the report issued on Monday by Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

The report added that CIA operatives may have subjected at least 27 detainees in Afghanistan, Poland, Romania and Lithuania to “torture, cruel treatment, outrages upon personal dignity and/or rape” between December 2002 and March 2008.

Most of the alleged abuse happened in 2003-2004, and was allegedly part of “approved interrogation techniques in an attempt to extract ‘actionable intelligence’ from detainees”.

Prosecutors said they would decide “imminently” whether to seek authorisation to open a full-scale investigation in Afghanistan that could lead to war crimes charges.

State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said the US does not believe an ICC investigation is “warranted or appropriate”.

“The United States is deeply committed to complying with the law of war, and we have a robust national system of investigation and accountability that more than meets international standards,” Trudeau said.

A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Captain Jeff Davis, said officials were awaiting more details about the ICC findings before commenting.

If an investigation into the US army and the CIA goes ahead, it would be a very significant move by the ICC, according to David Bosco, who wrote a book about the ICC’s role and function in global politics.

“This would be the first time that the ICC has set its sights on US personnel and it does look like they are going to be focusing on the activities of the CIA in Afghanistan in 2003, 2004, which makes it a serious investigation of CIA interrogation practices in the wake of 9/11,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The prosecutor in this latest report also signals that she does not have confidence that the national judicial systems are going to do their job and therefore she wants to move forward with the investigation.”

Established in 2002, the ICC is the world’s first permanent court set up to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

More than 120 countries around the world are members, but superpowers including the US, Russia and China have not signed up.

Former US President Bill Clinton signed the Rome treaty that established the court on December 31, 2000, but President George W Bush renounced the signature, citing fears that Americans would be unfairly prosecuted for political reasons.

Even though the US is not a member of the court, Americans could still face prosecution at the ICC headquarters in The Hague if they commit crimes within its jurisdiction in a country that is a member, such as Afghanistan, and are not prosecuted at home.

So far, all of the ICC’s trials have dealt with crimes committed in Africa.

Before deciding to open a full-scale investigation, ICC prosecutors have to establish whether they have jurisdiction and whether the alleged crimes are being investigated and prosecuted in the countries involved.

The ICC is a court of last resort that takes on cases only when other countries are unable or unwilling to prosecute.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Bush administration allowed the use of waterboarding, which simulates drowning, and other so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” against suspected “terrorists”.

President Barack Obama banned such practices after taking office in 2009.

During the presidential campaign, Republican nominee Donald Trump suggested that as president he would push to change laws that prohibit waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques, arguing that banning them puts the US at a strategic disadvantage.

FBI: Hate crimes against Muslims in US surge 67 percent

November 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Number of anti-Muslim hate crimes rose in 2015 to the highest level since the aftermath of 9/11.

by Al Jazeera

Hate crimes against Muslims in the United States shot up 67 percent in 2015 to their highest levels since the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to new FBI statistics.

Overall, 57 percent of the 5,850 reported incidents were motivated by race or ethnicity, while 20 percent of hate crimes were related to religious bias, the federal law enforcement agency reported on Monday.

There were 257 incidents of anti-Muslim bias in 2015, compared with 154 the previous year. The number is second only to the surge in hate crimes following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, when 481 incidents against Muslims were reported.

While there was a huge increase in crimes against Muslims, Jews remained the most frequent target of religious-based hate crimes in the US, representing 53 percent of all those reported, the FBI said.

The bureau’s report also listed 1,053 hate crimes regarding sexual orientation, 19 percent of which were committed against gay males.

The report came at a time of heightened racial and religious tensions in the US following last week’s presidential election.

“I think these statistics are just a fraction of what we see on the ground right now,” Ibrahim Hooper, from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), told Al Jazeera.

“We witnessed a spark in the number of hate crimes against Muslims in late 2015, and this number increased further during Donald Trump’s election campaign.

“We expect the situation to get worse in the future, based on the fact that Donald Trump had mainstreamed Islamophobia.”

President-elect Trump’s campaign had heavily focused on minorities, immigrants and Muslims, routinely painting these groups as threats to peace, the economy, and homeland security.

Famously while campaigning, Trump called for a ban on Muslims entering the US. He also promised to build a wall to block Mexicans.

In the first television interview since his election, Trump said he is planning to immediately deport or jail as many as three million undocumented immigrants.

There have been several reports of racist, Islamophobic and anti-semitic incidents since last Tuesday’s election that have sparked outrage, including a mosque at New York University’s Brooklyn campus being vandalised, and several Muslim women reporting Trump supporters attempting to rip off their headscarves.

Black students at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) said they were afraid to attend classes after they were subjected to racial slurs and threats of lynching following the election.

A videotaped assault in Chicago showed black men beating a white man as onlookers screamed, “You voted Trump!”

Hundreds of Americans also detailed on social media racist attacks that have taken place since the election.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate crimes across the United States, has counted more than 200 complaints since election day, according to USA Today.

On Sunday, Trump further ignited civil rights organisations’ concerns by naming right-wing Breitbart news executive Stephen Bannon as his chief strategist and senior counsellor.

Under Bannon’s tenure, Breitbart pushed a nationalist agenda and became one of the leading outlets of the so-called alt-right – a movement often associated with white supremacist ideas that oppose multiculturalism and defend “Western values”.

“Donald Trump just named a white supremacist as chief strategist,” CAIR’s Hooper said. “We have no reason to believe things are going to get better for the American Muslim community or other minorities anytime soon.”

High Court dismisses PIL for ban on burqa, other face veils in Delhi

November 15, 2016 by Nasheman

muslim

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on burqas and other face veils in public places due to security threat to the capital, saying it is not a public interest matter.

A bench of chief justice G. Rohini and justice Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal dismissed the plea saying, “If it is a policy decision, the government will take care of it. How can we entertain it (PIL) under Article 226 (power of high courts to issue certain writs)?” the bench said.

“We cannot interfere in this writ petition. The same is dismissed. It is not an issue which deserves consideration by this court under the Article. It is not a matter of public interest,” it observed.

The plea sought a ban on wearing face veils including burqas, helmets, hoods, among others at public places like transport, government buildings and heritage sites in the capital on the ground of threat from terror activities.

The plea, filed by Sardar Ravi Ranjan Singh, alleged “the use of face coverings and wearing of full body cover like the burqa is a serious security issue and citizens are put to constant risk and fear in the capital which is in violation of Article 21(protection of life and personal liberty) of the Constitution of India.” It said, “There is a rapid growth in terrorist activities and that the perpetrators of these criminal acts show no respect to burqa and ruthlessly use it as an instrument to carry out ‘fidayeen’ attacks.”

The petitioner also referred to the recent attacks in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir and said public safety and the government offices in the capital are at constant risk. “Face veils, burqas can be used to prevent identification at border check-posts, etc. Further, criminals and extremists can use burqas to skip checking at police posts and barricades,” the PIL, which made centre, Delhi government and National Security Council as parties, said.

Trump to ‘deport up to three million immigrants’

November 14, 2016 by Nasheman

US president-elect, in his first interview since victory, says he plans to deport or jail undocumented foreigners.

trump

by Al Jazeera

US president-elect Donald Trump said he planned to immediately deport or jail as many as three million undocumented immigrants, as he set out his priorities in the first television interview since his election.

The interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes was broadcast on Sunday, with millions tuning in for clues on how the billionaire businessman-turned-politician will govern the country.

Since Tuesday’s election triumph, Trump had appeared to tone down his rhetoric, notably suggesting he might be willing to reconsider a pledge to scrap President Barack Obama’s signature health reform, the so-called Obamacare.

He made clear, though, in excerpts of Sunday’s interview that he still intended to crack down on undocumented immigrants in the country, focusing on people with criminal records.

“What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers … probably two million of them, it could be even three … out of our country, or we are going to incarcerate them,” Trump said.

Trump’s stance on his deportation plans stood in opposition with comments by House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said on Sunday the focus under a Trump administration would be on securing the border, not rounding up immigrants.

Trump also said he would keep his promise to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, but said part of it could be a fence, as some members of Congress have suggested.

“There could be some fencing,” he said in the interview, but in other areas “a wall is more appropriate”.

Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna, reporting from Washington DC, said there was no question about having a barrier on the border or not, but the discussion was about what form it would take as Trump had previously insisted it would largely be a physical wall, not a fence.

“The issue of a strong border is important for many Republicans, and indeed many Democrats. But the differences are as to what form it takes. There are already fences in large areas of the border at present, which the Congress approved,” Hanna said.

“If Donald Trump wants to get his wall, he needs the Republican-majority Congress to approve the expenses for it. He alienated many there during his campaign.”

Separately, 50,000 people in the US have signed a petition asking Trump to openly reject hate and bigotry.

It was set up following more than 200 reports of intimidation and harassment since election day. Some of those cases have been highlighted on social media.

Trump’s campaign was marked by derogatory comments about race, religion, gender and disability.
However, in his victory speech, he vowed to be a President for “all Americans”.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a classy entertainer with a daringly different theme

November 14, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

ae-dil-hai-mushkil

Banner: Dharma Productions
Producer: Karan Johar
Director: Karan Johar
Star Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Lisa Haydon, Fawad Khan, Imran Abbas & Shah Rukh Khan
Music: Pritam

Celebrity director Karan Johar certainly needs no special introduction. His Dharma Production banner is well – known for making larger than life movies which are crammed with opulence and one which are star also always studded, in fact Karan Johar depends heavily on the Star Power, and in case of his latest offering Ae Dil HaI Mushkil too is absolutely no exception to the rule. So
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a classy entertainer with a daringly different theme.

The scripted scenario of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil kicks start with the introduction of singer Ayaan Sanger (Ranbir Kapoor) giving an interview, wherein he talks about the inspiration behind his successful singing career. The story, then enters a flashback mode that has Ayaan & the free spirited Alizeh Khan (Anushka Sharma) meeting at a night club. They start enjoying each other’s company as friends, so much so that they become inseparable. One day, when Ayaan & Alizeh go on a double date with their respective lovers (Lisa Haydon & Imran Abbas), an untoward incident happens which leads to them breaking up with their own lovers. And to “celebrate” their break up, Ayaan & Alizeh head to Paris, where they find seamless comfort in each other’s company. Despite Ayaan repeatedly confessing his love for Alizeh, she maintains that they are only best friends and nothing more than that. One day, when Ayaan & Alizeh go to party at a club (Not again the movie is full of party scenes), Alizeh finds her ex – lover Ali (Fawad Khan) playing at the DJ console. Alizeh, who now finds her love rekindled for Ali, announces her decision to Ayaan. She tells Ayaan that she wants to get married to Ali, who happened to be the only person whom she ever loved. A heartbroken Ayaan, then meets the stunning Sabah (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a poetess who is happily divorced. Despite the 2 having a great live – in relationship, Sabah finds something amiss in their relationship. Amidst all this, Ayaan gets to know something shocking about Alizeh that changes everyone’s lives forever.

One no doubt feels a lot of compassion for Karan Johar for being unnecessarily dragged into the “Pakistani Actors” overhyped controversies galore. But this happend when the movie was indeed on the verge of release. But Mr. Karan Johar what went wrong when the film was in the making? Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is certainly not a common man’s cup of tea. The subject & the content of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is too high profile and suitable only for the richie rich high society big wig. In fact the movie has everything in excess like boyfriend – girlfriend pub hopping (Read Night Clubs) and drinking away too glory which ends up in one night stands & even live – in relationships, double dates, hooking up with anyone & everyone, exchange of lovers and what not the list is endless. Karan Johar was busy scripting this confusions galore. So much so that he totally forgot to concentrate & focus on the other aspects of filmmaking. Never mind he is now gloating in his success as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has already crossed its Global 100 Crore mark due to the overflow in its Diwali weekend.

Performance wise Ranbir Kapoor steals the limelight with his Impeccable act. He has literally lived his role of a lover boy, or should we say lusty boy, falling in an out of love like nobody’s business. In fact one thinks that a film like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil should have been Ranbir Kapoor’s debut vehicle and not Sanwariya. He is just too perfect to be true. And his chemistry with Anushka Sharma is mind blowing. While she herself has not only given one more good account of herself but she is just “Terrific” in one word. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is excellent & classy in her brief role rather a cameo comprising of not more than a few scenes. Fawad Khan, whose role has been chopped mercilessly, looks good in whatever screen time he gets. The cameos by Alia Bhatt & Imran Abbas seem just passable. On the other hand, cameos by Shah Rukh Khan & Lisa Haydon are brilliant.

Tail Piece: Whatever be the minus & plus points of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the cash registers at the Box Office turnstiles are still ringing. Mr. Karan Johar is obviously laughing all the way to the bank as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has got superhit written all over it.
