“P.O.W. Bandi Yudh ke will question the society at large” – Nikhil Advani

December 14, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

nikhil-advani

Director Nikhil Advani’s claim to fame has been Dharma Productions Kal Ho Na Ho in the year 2003. But his directorial skills had received a jolting setback with the failure of damp squib’s like the Imran Khan – Kangana starrer Katti Batti and Suraj Pancholi – Athiya Shetty starrer, Salman Khan Productions Hero. But of late he was back in the saddle, this time as a producer with the thumping success of the Akhshay Kumar – Nimrat Kaur starrer Airlift which was directed by his good friend Raja Krishna Menon. These days he is neck deep in directing a patriotic saga for the small screen namely Star Plus’ show P.O.W Bandi Yudh Ke. Caught up with Nikhil Advani at the launch of the show in JW Marriot.

At present you are busy directing a small screen show for Star Plus Channel. So give us more insight about it.

I am bringing to the small screen, an untold story of the war. It will be about the repercussions of war but more of its aftermath reactions on the family. It will question the society at large, “Who are the real prisoners of war?”. The show is called P.O.W. Bandi Yudh Ke. It is a Pan Indian adaptation of the acclaimed Israeli Television series named Hatufim directed by Gidan Raff. It has a refreshingly ensemble cast comprising of Sandhya Mridul as Nazneen Khan, Amrita Puri as Harleen Kaur, Satyadeep Mishra as Squadron leader Imaan Khan, Manish Chaudhari as Retired Major Vikram Singh and above all Purab Kohli as Nayab Subedar Sartaj Singh.

Please narrate the gist of the plot!

I have Indianised the plot and based it on the aftermath repercussions of the Kargil War in which 527 Soldiers were killed and 1363 Soldiers were wounded and from thereon it is all about the 4 lives interrupted and 2 familes shattered. The Soldiers return after 17 long years after being held as Prisoners of War. It is an emotionally intense, gripping, fresh and edge of the seat story. The return of the Soldiers to their interrupted lives after 17 long years will keep the viewers at a razor’s edge as their whole story unfolds in the most unexpected manner. Now this is what makes the entire storyline of P.O.W. Bandi Yudh Ke a unique combination of family drama in a thrilling way. It is all set to be telecast on Star Plus Channel in this festive season.

Kindly elaborate about the actor’s respective roles!

Nazneen Khan (Sandhya Mridul) hails from Delhi who is the wife of Sqaudron leader Imaan Khan (Satyadeep Mishra) who believes that heroism is not just demonstrated on the battlefield. It brings us closer to the extraordinary heroism of the wives of the war heroes, everyday of the war and even after the war is over. Her life is stuck between the past and the present thereby leaving her like a pendulum unable to make her own choice in the wait of her husband’s return. She braves the emotion everyday as her husband still remains missing in action. No doubt she has moved on to seek companionship and support in the absence of her husband. On the other hand
Harleen Kaur (Amrita Puri) hailing from Punjab has grown from being a 17 year old girl with dreams in her eyes of a newly wed to a woman who has not lost her hope of being able to see her husband Sartaj Singh (Purab Kohli) who had left for his call of duty at Kargil War on their wedding night itself. But 17 years since war, she has turned into a strong, resilient and independent woman and she is now the pillar of Sartaj’s family still in waiting for her husband’s return.

Please go on!

While Retired Major Vikram Singh (Manish Chaudhari) has undergone 17 years of torture in captivity by Pakistan. He starts wondering whether the war heroes have been converted into terrorists? He strongly believes that 17 years is a long time and can change anybody, even an Indian Soldier for that matter. On the other hand Squadron leader Imaan Khan (Satyadeep Mishra) is a captive Indian Soldier in Pakistan for 17 long years. While imprisoned, he lived each day with just one hope that is to reunite with his family. But his patriotism was tested in Pakistan everyday and now his loyalties are being questioned everyday after his return to his own nation and then there is Sartaj Singh (Purab Kohli) who also undergoes the trauma of a prisoner of war and his story is also emotionally heart wrenching as the damage done by now is beyond measure and his scars remain for a lifetime.

By the way to what would you attribute the failures of your last two films in the recent past namely Katti Batti and Hero?

I have no misgivings at all of the failures of Katti Batti and Hero. I take the sole responsibility of the failures of both the films. Nobody else is to be blamed for the debacle of these two films. Actually speaking whatever directorial praise I had earned for the other hit films like Kal Ho Na Ho and D-Day to name just two, I lost it all with these two above mentioned films. I think Katti Batti literally failed to live up to cine goer’s expectations. Perhaps they could not identify with the film. I still believe Katti Batti was a beautiful film. My heart and soul was in it. I would still say that Imran’s performance in Katti Batti was his best till date and I don’t regret taking Imran in the film. I would still want to work with him. None of us could fathom why the film did not work because we all loved the film so much.
Whereas I think Hero was not a film made only for the purpose of earning rave reviews. It was obviously made to launch Aditya Pancholi’s son Suraj Pancholi and Sunil Shetty’s daughter Athiya Shetty. Hero was an orthodox story and had a conventional treatment, which had worked in the ’80s. It had great music. In retrospect, I should have treated it the way I wanted to. I also agree that while Sooraj Pancholi won notice, Athiya Shetty received mixed reactions. We were aware that Athiya is not a conventional looking girl. She is statuesque and has model like features. We did not know whether she would be accepted by Indian sensibilities. But we were sure she would confidently pull off the role, which she did. I don’t think both Suraj and Athiya could have got a better launch than this Salman Khan vehicle. Now in their second film, they both will have to prove their mettle even more.

Ok what are the future projects that you have lined up for yourself?

I am indeed working side by side on two directorial projects at the moment. One is Bazaar, a story based in Mumbai about the stock market. The film is about the abuse of power and the intoxication of wealth. It’s a rags – to – riches and a riches – to – rags story. The other one is based on the Hollywood film namely The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which is currently being written. But I won’t make these two films simultaneously like Katti Batti and Hero. I do not at all wish to repeat my mistakes.

“Yaaron Ki Baraat will recreate the magic of Bollywood star friends” – Ritiesh Deshmukh

December 14, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

riteish-deshmukh

Two power house personalities namely actor -director Sajid Khan and actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh have joined hands together recently to host a celebrity talk show named Yaaron Ki Baraat on Zee TV Channel. The show premiered on 8th Oct, 2016 and it will be telecast in the prime time slotting of 9 pm every Saturday and Sunday. Yaaron Ki Baraat will span 10 weeks of rollercoaster joyride. This unique albeit first of its kind talk show will focus on Bollywood star pairs who are friends. It borders on their friendship over the years. It will be layered with wit and humor including anecdotes from their personal as well as their professional life. Caught up with Ritiesh Deshmukh, to get more info about the show in the Press Conference held at Studio 8 in Filmcity.

How did the idea about the celebrity talk show Yaaron Ki Baarat germinate?

The show Yaaron Ki Baraat has been conceptualized by Esselvision and Sajid (Khan) was roped in before me and it was Sajid who had asked them to contact me and ask me if I was interested in hosting the show along with him and most important if I would be able to spare time for the show amidst all my over busy schedule. But the moment I met them, including Sajid, and heard the concept of the show I was like game for it and gave my instant nod of approval.

Whose idea was it to have Amitabh Bachchan & Shatrughan Sinha as the first long lost Bollywood friends to appear on the show?

Once Sajid and me were up for the show. We had a sort of many joint meetings with Esselvision guys to discuss further about the game plan of the show. It was in one such meetings that both Sajid and me sounded off the idea to have both Amitji and Shatruji on the show and the moment we made this suggestion everyone in the meeting had this zapped up expression on their face and even we both were shit scared and nervous on how are we were going to achieve this impossible feat.

And then?

Then we just cooled down and we both decided to meet Amitji and Shatruji and convince them to be the first ever guests on the show. So I met Amitji and Sajid met Shatruji and narrated the concept of the show to them and once again we were shocked and surprised when they agreed to be the first guest on the show. Later on even Shatruji’s better half Poonam Sinha and his daughter Sonakshi Sinha informed us that Shatruji was too excited to be on the show with Amitji, as it was almost three and a half decades that both of them were appearing together on one platform. Yet we both could not believe that it was possible till their car reached Filmcity Studio, till they settled down in their Vanity Van and till they donned their make up. Finally we heaved a sigh of relief when we actually started shooting with them. Of course we were both nervous thinking that anything could have gone wrong and the shoot may have to be cancelled at the last moment. But thankfully everything went right, just as we had planned it. After the shoot there was appreciation galore even with a snide remarks that perhaps Amitji – Shatruji episode should have been a curtain’s down grand finale episode. But we promise to bring more excitement in the grand finale episode. In fact having both Amitji and Shatruji in the curtain raiser of Yaaron Ki Baraat was our trump card.

Maybe Sajid and you can bring together the jodi of Salman Khan – Shah Rukh Khan for the grande finale episode!

We both can’t promise the viewers on that score but we give our full assurance that we will try our level best to bring them together on the show at least in one of the episodes if not for the grand finale episode.

What exactly is the concept of the show?

We all have a Best Friend in our lives and we celebrities are no exception. Despite constant comparisons, constant cut throat competition, hectic schedules and frequent travels some of the Bollywood star friends have still managed to hold on to their friendship over the years. So for the first time ever on Indian Television, Zee TV Channel brings to the viewers this fun filled chat show Yaaron Ki Baraat.

Please Continue!!!

First of all this show will put celebrity friendships to test through a series of fun challenges and tasks. The guests will also share sepia toned memories including heartwarming anecdotes from their friendship over the years. They will also recreate the magic of their professional as well as personal lives and sometimes even spill the beans on each other. They will sportingly take on dares, parodying the most iconic scenes from their cult films and also reminiscing the good old times with pictures and videos. We will also put their compatibility to test over fun games. In fact they will let their hair down and have a good time. Our idea is to let spontaneity take over and reveal their fun sides to the viewers who will also participate with their rare Q&A sessions.

By the way who christened the show as Yaaron Ki Baraat and why only this name?

The show earlier had another working title but it was not jelling well with the real concept of the show. So on an impulse I suggested the name Yaaron Ki Baraat and it had an instant Bollywood connect with the superhit Bollywood film Yaadon Ki Baraat and the show is also about Bollywood star friends going down the memory lane and also getting nostalgic about it.

What are the exciting line – up of star friends for the show and will you both bring together even female star friends?

We will bring 20 pairs of star friends on the show in the alloted 10 weeks and if the show goes well then we may also have a second season as for now we are having a line – up of Karan Johar – Farah Khan, Sania Mirza – Pariniti Chopra, Harbhajan Singh – Yuvraaj Singh etc etc etc. Maybe we will try to bring even the current Bollywood actors like Ranveer Singh – Arjun Kapoor. We will try to bring other good friends from Business as well as Political arena and of course even other female star friends like we brought together Sania and Pariniti.

Will you also have Bollywood stars who were thick friends earlier and cannot see eye to eye now?

Sorry to say but this is not a reconciliation show. It is very difficult to make them friends again, at least not on the show. But on second thoughts you have sounded off a very good idea. Maybe we can work on it in the second season that is, if there is a second season and if we will still be hosting it. You see there are sometimes a lot of slip between the cup and the lip.

How was your experience of hosting the show?

While I have already hosted award ceremonies, Yaaron Ki Baraat will be my first time as the host of a chat show on a Hindi GEC. So to host a show celebrating friendships with a very close friend like Sajid feels apt. He has a great sense of humor, an impeccable sense of timing and together we hope to create the light hearted kind of atmosphere for the celebrities to open up and share things they have never ever spoken of. We look forward to entertaining audiences and letting them experience the friendships of their favorite stars. As for my personal experience of hosting Yaaron Ki Baraat I would say that both Sajid and me are like two old buddies who just got together for this show and had a lot of fun. In fact to be very frank we both had a real BLAST!!!

Karnataka Excise Minister resigns after sex scandal allegations

December 14, 2016 by Nasheman

h-y-meti

Bengaluru: Hit by an alleged sex CD scandal, Karnataka Excise Minister H Y Meti resigned today, saying he has quit to avoid embarrassment to the Siddaramaiah government while denying any wrongdoing on his part.

As the controversy snowballed with the Opposition demanding his exit, Meti met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and submitted his resignation.

“Excise Minister H Y Meti has resigned. I have recommended to Hon’ble Governor to accept the resignation. I have also ordered a probe,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

“I have resigned on my own volition to avoid any embarrassment to the government and the chief minister,” Meti told reporters after he met the Chief Minister.

“I have done nothing wrong. I have requested the Chief Minister to hold an inquiry,” said 71-year-old Meti, who has been rubbishing the allegations against him.

The minister landed in a row after an RTI activist Rajashekar Mulali claimed that he was in possession of a CD containing Meti’s alleged indecent act with a woman who approached him for a favour.

The activist had also claimed that some supporters of Meti had threatened him over the CD, which had not been released till the minister’s exit.

However, an audio tape had surfaced in connection with the alleged sex CD, where a man claiming to be a supporter of Meti is heard threatening the RTI activist.

“…All the reports that are coming on TV channels are false. I don’t know who that RTI activist is, I only saw him on TV today. Also none of my supporters have threatened anyone, the language they are using is not the one spoken in north Karnataka,” Meti had said earlier after the row erupted.

Meti had also said he did not know who was behind the CD

as “I don’t have any enemies..” but added that he did not intend to lodge a police complaint, saying, “let them produce the video and prove the allegations first, after that I will take required action, whether to file a police complaint or whatever needs to be done.

Congress seeks Rijiju’s removal over Rs 450-crore hydel project ‘scam’

December 14, 2016 by Nasheman

kiren-rijiju

New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is in the eye of a storm with the Congress accusing him of involvement in a Rs 450-crore “scam” over payments to sub-contractors, including his “cousin”, working for a 600MW hydel project in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Congress sought the resignation of Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Affairs, after releasing an audio tape on Tuesday purportedly featuring his “cousin” and a top vigilance officer. The tape includes a purported conversation the minister’s “cousin” and a sub-contractor for the project Goboi Rijiju had with Satish Verma, Chief Vigilance Officer of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO).

Goboi is heard dropping the name of his minister “cousin” and assuring Verma of a promotion if he cleared the hurdles in payment of bills for supply of boulders to the Kameng Hydro-electric Power Project.

Verma, an IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, had submitted a 129-page report to the CBI, the CVC and the Ministry of Power in July alleging an “elaborate conspiracy” involving contractors, NEEPCO officials and the district administration to dupe the government to the tune of Rs 450 crore.

In a late-night statement, the power ministry said Verma had filed the “back-dated” reports after being “relieved of duties” on July 5, 2016. It said he was charge-sheeted for continued violation of the Central Vigilance Commission instructions and violation of conduct rules for “not performing his duties with due diligence and care”.
Rijiju had written a letter to Power Minister Piyush Goyal in November last year urging him to look into the matter “sympathetically on priority”.

“Kiren Rijiju has no right to continue in office,” Randeep Singh Surjewala, in charge of the Congress’ communications department, said.

Rijiju refutes corruption charges

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju refuted the Congress’ charges involving him and a contractor in a hydro-electric project in Arunachal Pradesh. Denying that he had written to Power Minister Piyush Goyal last November to help his “brother”, he said he had intervened after the local people had told him that their payments had been held up for two months.

I have detailed info about ‘personal corruption’ by Modi, says Rahul Gandhi

December 14, 2016 by Nasheman

Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: After claiming that there will be an “earthquake” if he speaks, Rahul Gandhi today alleged that he has detailed information about “personal corruption” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which he wants to present in Lok Sabha but is not being allowed to do so by the PM.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar rejected Gandhi’s allegation as “false and baseless” and “very unfortunate”. “The allegation was made out of desperation and he (Gandhi) should apologise to the nation,” he told reporters.

As the Parliament remained deadlocked over the issue of demonetisation, Gandhi said the prime minister is personally terrified of him being allowed to speak inside Lok Sabha.

“The Prime Minister is personally terrified of me being allowed to open my mouth inside Lok Sabha because I have information about the Prime Minister that is going to explode his balloon. And I am not being allowed to speak in the House,” he told reporters in Parliament premises.

Asked what kind of information he has, the Congress Vice President said, “That information is personal information about Narendra Modiji which I want to state in Lok Sabha. It is personal corruption of the Prime Minister that we have detailed information about. We want to present it, which the Prime Minister is not allowing us to speak.”

Gandhi said the entire opposition wants a debate in Parliament and have discussed with the Speaker to allow it while dispensing all rules. “Pretty much unconditionally we are ready to have a discussion, but the government is not interested in having a discussion. I have already said it before, the Prime Minister is personally terrified of me being allowed to open my mouth inside the Lok Sabha,” he said.

He claimed Modi has taken a decision against the poor people of this country and has “destroyed” millions of lives and thus is answerable. He said he has personally taken this decision and he cannot keep running away from the House.

Gandhi said the Prime Minister cannot keep “running away” to pop concerts to public meetings. This is a democracy, he owes this country an explanation and he owes the entire opposition a space in the discussion in the Lok Sabha, he said.

“The Prime Minister is worried. He goes to pop concerts and public meetings. Why does he not come to the House. For the first time in history, the treasury benches and the government is stalling Parliament. Normally the opposition stalls the House.

“The Prime Minister should stop taking alibis and he should come to the House and give all of us an opportunity to speak. Then the country should take a decision on whether the opposition or the Prime Minister is speaking the truth,” he said.
TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who was accompanied by Gandhi, said the entire Parliamentary system is facing a “threat” as government is not allowing the House to function smoothly and allow the opposition to speak.

“We cannot understand why so much arrogance on the part of the government. The voice of the opposition is going to be gagged. Parliamentary democratic system is now under threat only to resist that Rahul Gandhi will not be allowed to speak,” he said.

He said the government is spreading rumours that after Rahul Gandhi speaks, the opposition will not allow the House to function. “It is totally incorrect,” he said.

Bandyopadhyay charged the government is not allowing the opposition to speak in Lok Sabha and this was “unfortunate and disgraceful”.

P Karunakaran (CPI-M) said all 16 parties came together on the issue of demonetisation and wanted a discussion on the issue, but the government is now allowing this.

“Government is not willing to answer questions. The Prime Minister is accountable to Parliament but has not come to the Lok Sabha. It is very clear that they are not ready to answer the questions raised. The Prime Minister is running away from Parliament which means he is running away from people,” he said.

NCP leader Tariq Anwer said this is the first time that such an atmosphere has been created where the opposition is not allowed to speak.

“It is a conspiracy by the government. The entire opposition is united. What is the government fearing from. We are all united. Let us be allowed to speak,” he said.

Gandhi was accompanied by a few other party leaders besides his own leaders in Lok Sabha, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Earlier leaders of 16 opposition parties today met in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad’s and decided to launch a united offensive against the government on demonetisation.

They also decided to launch a united offensive against Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who is under opposition fire over his alleged role in the “Arunachal power scam”.

ISIL ‘recaptures’ Palmyra from Syrian forces

ISIL has recaptured the Syrian city of Palmyra after thousands of its fighters launched a multi-pronged assault on the ancient city, according to reports.

The Russian Monitoring Centre in Syria said on Sunday that ISIL, or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group, had drawn on “significant forces” from its strongholds in nearby Raqqa and Deir Az-zor, with more than 4,000 fighters, backed by tanks, attacking the city.

Russia, Syria’s ally, had launched a flurry of air strikes overnight that reportedly killed 300 ISIL fighters and forced the group to retreat.

However, later on Sunday, ISIL, also known as ISIS, claimed to be in full control of Palmyra via Amaq, a news agency that supports the group, with government troops forced to retreat to the south of the city.

Talal al-Barazi, the governor of Homs, confirmed to Syrian state TV that ISIL had captured Palmyra, adding that the army was using all of its means to regain control.

ISIL captured Palmyra, also known as Tadmur, in May last year, before losing the city 10 months later to much international fanfare.

During that time, it destroyed some ancient sites and artefacts while using others to stage mass executions.

String of defeats

ISIL also destroyed the infamous Tadmur prison, where thousands of government opponents were reported to have been tortured.

ISIL has suffered a string of defeats in both Syria and Iraq in recent months, losing several towns and cities it had captured in 2014.

According to defence analysts at the think tank IHS Jane, ISIL lost about 12 percent of its territory in 2016, and about 14 percent in 2015.

SRK meets Thackeray, promises he won’t work with Pak actors in future

December 12, 2016 by Nasheman

shah-rukh-khan-raj-thackeray

Mumbai: Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday assured Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray that Mahira Khan, a Pakistani actress in his forthcoming release “Raees” will not come to India for promoting the film, a party official said here.

“Shah Rukh Khan met Thackeray at his residence a short while ago and gave this assurance. He has also committed to not engaging any Pakistani actors in any of his future film ventures,” MNS Chitrapat Sena chief Ameya Khopkar told IANS.

The superstar was concerned by rumours floating on social media networks that his co-star in “Raees” Mahira Khan was likely to come to India next month for promoting the film and joining its premiere.

However, Shah Rukh put all rumours to rest and personally called on Thackeray to apprise him of the real situation, Khopkar said.

In view of his clarifications, the MNS will not oppose the January 25 release or screening of “Raees” in cinema halls, he added.

After September 18 Uri attack that left 19 Indian soldiers dead and the September 28 surgical strikes by India on Pakistan terror camps, the MNS had strongly protested against hiring of Pakistani actors by Indian film-makers.

Thackeray had vowed to stop release of a few films in which Pakistani actors are playing roles, including Karan Johar’s recent “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and SRK’s “Raees” which has cast Mahira Khan.

MNS had staged dramatic protests prior to the release of “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” but finally relented after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis brokered peace with MNS, Johar and the Film & Television Producers Guild of India.

This paved the way for the film’s peaceful release and exhibition across Maharashtra on October 28.

In 2013, SRK’s “Chennai Express” had run into trouble with the MNS after it allegedly threatened to yank off Marathi films to accommodate its shows in single-screen cinemas.

Prior to that, SRK’s blockbuster “My Name Is Khan” had run into trouble with the Shiv Sena but the issue was later amicably sorted out.

Heavy rains pound coastal TN as Cyclone Vardha approaches

December 12, 2016 by Nasheman

cyclone-vardha

Chennai: Heavy rains today pounded the city and north coastal districts of Tiruvallore and Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, inundating low lying areas, while high velocity winds uprooted hundreds of trees as the severe cyclonic storm Vardha reached about 60 kms northeast of Chennai and was likely to make landfall in the next couple of hours.

According to the IMD bulletin at noon, by the time Vardha hits the coast, winds with speed of 100-110 kmph to 120 kmph are like to sweep the region. Squally winds hit Chennai this morning as the very severe cyclonic storm approached Tamil Nadu. Power supply was suspended in many parts of these regions as a precautionary measure.

The rains intensified as the cyclone neared leading to waterlogging in many areas. The Tamil Nadu government had declared holiday for educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, besides coastal taluks of Villupuram.

Rail and flight services here have been affected, officials said. Around 25 incoming flights, including those from international destinations, were diverted to the nearby Hyderabad and Bangalore airports due to strong winds and poor visibility, airport officials said.

Nearly 25 outbound flights were delayed, officials said, adding that there was no inundation of the runway. An emergency management team was on standby to meet any eventuality, they said.

The Southern Railways, meanwhile, announced suspension of services on the Chennai Beach and Velacherry MRTS route. Similarly, suburban rail services on the MMC-Gummidipoondi line were also suspended until further notice. Some passenger trains coming to Chennai and leaving the city were also diverted.

The system was likely to move nearly westwards and weaken gradually while moving towards north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts. However, according to the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department, (IMD), Vardha, which is currently, a very severe cyclonic storm, will weaken, but only to a severe cyclonic storm.

Over 15 teams of NDRF have been deployed in various coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh which are on high alert due to the approaching cyclonic storm. The armed forces have been asked to be on standby with the army, navy and air force prepared to be deployed anytime as and when required.

People in low-lying areas have been asked to move to safer zones. Puducherry also experienced intermittent drizzle from early morning. The state government took precautionary steps to prevent tourists and other people from going close to the sea shore.

Police personnel were deployed on the entire two-and-a-half kilometre stretch of beach road and barricades were also put on all roads close to the sea shore. All schools and colleges are closed today.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) chief R K Pachnanda said while eight teams are ready in various areas of Tamil Nadu, seven are in Andhra Pradesh, apart from few others in nearby locations.

“Some more teams are on alert in Arrakonam and Guntur and they can be transported immediately in case they are required. We are in constant touch with the two state governments, the Indian Meteorological Department and other relief agencies,” the NDRF Director General told PTI.

Nellore and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh are also expected to affected. Over 9,400 people in seven mandals along the Bay of Bengal coast in Nellore were evacuated to relief camps this morning amid heavy rains.

Eight fishermen belonging to Tamil Nadu were rescued from the sea near the Sriharikota High Altitude Range while search was on for ten more persons.

The holy Tirumala Hills have been receiving rainfall since last night, causing some hardship to devotees visiting the shrine of Lord Venkateswara.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation through teleconference and asked the state agencies to remain on high alert to prevent loss of lives, officials said.
