Dozens have been reported missing, feared drowned, after a boat packed with Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar and trying to reach Bangladesh sank in a border river, according to the AFP news agency.

A Bangladeshi fisherman told AFP that he had rescued on Monday one woman, who told him that the “overcrowded” boat had sunk in the Naf river, after it was chased by a Myanmar army speedboat.

“We heard a woman’s desperate cry for help in the morning while we were fishing in the Naf. We quickly paddled to the spot and saw she was fighting to stay afloat,” fisherman Suman Das said by phone.

“The woman told us that their boat was overcrowded with Rohingya villagers who tried to cross the river to enter Bangladesh.”

The woman did not know what had happened to the others, and Das could not say how many people were on the boat.

But the private UNB news agency, quoting a Bangladeshi village councillor, said there were at least 31 Rohingya on board.

A Rohingya source told AFP by phone that the bodies of 13 women and children, two of whom had bullet wounds, had washed ashore in his village on Myanmar’s side of the Naf.

This could not be independently confirmed, however, and Bangladesh police and border guards said they were not aware of the incident.

An estimated 30,000 Rohingya have been forced to leave their homes since a bloody October crackdown by the Myanmar army in the western Rakhine state, where many of them live.

At least 10,000 have arrived in Bangladesh, the United Nations said last week, although Bangladesh said it has prevented large numbers from entering.

Myanmar has denied allegations of abuse, but has also banned foreign journalists and independent investigators from accessing the area to investigate.

Jayalalithaa’s final journey begins, funeral procession heads to Marina beach

December 6, 2016 by Nasheman

jayalalithaa

Chennai: Cries of “Amma” rent the air as a sea of humanity thronged the Rajaji Hall grounds today to pay their last respects to AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, whose body lay in state in Chennai where normal life virtually came to a grinding halt.

As tributes poured in from far and wide after the actress-turned-politicians’s death last night, the body of Jayalalithaa, which was draped in her favourite green colour saree, was taken from her Poes Garden residence early this morning to Rajaji Hall where tens of thousands of people queued up to have a last glimpse of their ‘Puratchi Thalaivi Amma’ (Revolutionary Leader Amma).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among scores of political leaders who were headed to Chennai to pay tributes to the 68-year-old AIADMK chief.

As the casket carrying the body of six-time chief minister was placed on the steps of Rajaji Hall, in the heart of the city off arterial Anna Salai, four Army men covered it with the national Tricolour.

Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his ministerial colleagues, MPs and MLAs and senior state government officials were among the first to pay homage to Jayalalithaa, who passed away at the Apollo Hospitals here at 11.30 last night after waging a grim battle for life since her hospitalisation on September 22.

Jayalithaa’s long time confidante Sasikala Natarajan stood close to the casket. Security has been beefed up at the venue where people lined up to bid a tearful adieu to their ‘Amma’ (mother) as Jayalithaa was fondly called.

Cries of “Amma” rent the air as the public filed past taking a last glimpse of their beloved leader from a distance away from the stairs, where the Tamil Nadu Ministers were seen seated.

Jayalalithaa’s body was first taken to her Poes Garden residence in the early hours and then brought to the Rajaji Hall.

The funeral will take place at 4.30 pm at the Dr MGR Memorial site off Marina beach, the state government said in an official communication.

All roads leading to Rajaji Hall grounds were bustling with crowds of people who did not mind taking a long walk with public transport, barring trains, remaining off the roads.

After Jayalalithaa’s body was brought to the Rajaji Hall, the crowd could be seen swelling by the minute and the heavy posse of police personnel deployed there were finding it very difficult to control them. Emotional scenes were witnessed as several women were seen wailing and thumping their chests.

The Centre declared a one-day state mourning today in view of the demise of ayalalithaa. National flag on all government buildings across the country was flown at half-mast.

Public transport services, including autorickshaws, were off the roads while some private vehicles were seen plying in various parts of the city where police personnel kept a tight vigil at vantage points.

A near total shutdown like situation prevailed in the city and several several other parts of the state since last evening itself.

Karnataka suspends bus services to TN after incidents of stone pelting

December 5, 2016 by Nasheman

karnataka

Bengaluru: In the wake of tense situation in Tamil Nadu over CM Jayalalithaa’s critical health, Karnataka State Road Transport has stopped all 470 bus services between the two states from Monday morning.

Officials in the corporation said they will wait and watch the law and order situation on the border and for a green signal from the police to send their buses to Tamil Nadu.

The services from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka has also been put on hold.

Private bus transport operators from Karnataka are also not willing to take chances and will decide whether to ply the routine night services. Only few private buses that ply between Salem and Hosur to Bengaluru are still operating.

Last time during the Cauvery crisis between the two neighbour states, victims were the bus operators. KSRTC lost revenue of more than Rs55 crores in 55 days when bus services were stopped. Buses were enabling people to reach Hosur border and get back.

Saudi Arabia muzzles journalist Jamal Khashoggi after he criticises Trump

Saudi Arabia is infamous for cracking down on journalists and media freedom. But the latest controversy over press control has raised eyebrows after journalist Jamal Khashoggi was banned from writing in newspapers after making disparaging remarks about US President-elect Donald Trump.

After Khashoggi voiced criticism of Trump at a Washington think-tank on 10 November, an official Saudi source was cited by the Saudi News Agency as saying that Khashoggi did not represent the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in his interviews or statements.

Khashoggi had suggested that Trump’s Middle East stance was often contradictory, especially regarding Iran. While Trump is vocally anti-Iranian, he supports President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian conflict. This ultimately bolsters Iranian regional control, making Iran’s long-standing emeny, Saudi Arabia, nervous, Khashoggi was reported as saying.

However, the Saudi government did not react well to the critique of the future US president and was quick to distance themselves from the statement: “The author Jamal Khashoggi does not represent the government of Saudi Arabia or its positions at any level,” said a ministry source quoted by the Saudi Press Agency.

Alongside this, Saudi authorities banned the journalist from writing in newspapers, appearing on TV and attending conferences. However, the decision has provoked backlash, with many taking to Twitter to condemn the muzzling of Kashoggi:

جمال خاشقجي تتفق أو تختلف معه قامة صحفية كبيرة وقرار منعه من الظهور الإعلامي والكتابي خطأ ..ورأيت أكثر الفرحين بالقرار المستعربون الإيرانيون

— موسى العمر (@MousaAlomar) November 27, 2016

Jamal Khashoggi, agree or disagree with him, he is a great journalist and the decision to ban him from media appearances or writing is wrong… The people who are happiest with the decision are Iranians who speak Arabic.

أنت فين يا جمال؟ @JKhashoggi إسكات الأصوات الحرة لن يغيبها أو يغيب الحقيقة

— Amr Hamzawy (@HamzawyAmr) December 4, 2016

Where are you Jamal? @JKhashoggi Silencing the voices of freedom will not make them go away or make the truth go away.

Khashoggi is a well-established Saudi writer and journalist. He has extensive political and media experience and has held the position of editor in chief of a number of Saudi newspapers, including the Arab Times and Al-Watan.

It is unclear why Saudi authorities reacted so harshly to Khashoggi’s comments on Trump.

Saudi Arabia and America have historically close ties, although these were strained during President Barack Obama’s presidency due to disagreements over policy. The election of Trump has generally pleased the Kingdom, as they see his conservative, Republican views as more in line with their own.

However, Trump has previously made threats to cut off US oil purchases from Saudi Arabia, striking fear into the hearts of Saudi oil companies. With Trump’s foreign policy approach unclear, it appears the Saudis are making every attempt to appease the new President and maintain their powerful alliance with the US.

Suspected Russian warplanes bomb Idlib, dozens killed

December 5, 2016 by Nasheman

Monitoring group says air strikes hit several places across Syrian province, killing at least 73 people.

Eighteen people were killed in Maarat al-Numan, the Syrian Observatory said [AFP]

Eighteen people were killed in Maarat al-Numan, the Syrian Observatory said [AFP]

by Al Jazeera

At least 73 people have been killed in suspected Russian air strikes on several areas of Idlib province in northwest Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, as government forces advanced in fierce clashes with rebels in east Aleppo.

The Britain-based monitor said on Sunday at least three locations were bombed in the northwestern province and most of the casualties were civilians.

At least 26 people, including three children, were killed in the town of Kafr Nabl, and another 38 people were killed in the town of Maarat al-Numan.

A witness told AFP news agency “six strikes hit houses and a crowded local market” in the village of Kafr Nabl.

In Maarat al-Numan, an AFP photographer saw local residents and White Helmets rescue workers trying to reach survivors in the rubble at a vegetable market hit in the strike.

The monitor also reported two additional deaths, one in an earlier strike on Maarat al-Numan and another in al-Naqir, also in Idlib.

And it said six civilians, five of them children, had been killed in a government barrel bomb attack on the town of al-Tamanah in the south of Idlib.

Russia began a military intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assad in September last year, saying it was carrying out strikes against “terrorists”.

In November, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russian forces had begun a “major operation” targeting Idlib and Homs provinces.

The northern Idlib province is mostly controlled by a powerful rebel alliance known as the Army of Conquest.

Most of Homs province is controlled by the Syrian government, but small parts of the countryside are controlled by a range of rebel groups.

More than 300,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 with anti-government protests before spiralling into a bloody civil war.

Meanwhile, government forces advanced against rebels in east Aleppo, taking two small neighbourhoods and pushing into a third, state media said.

The army and allied forces are nearly three weeks into an operation to recapture all of Syria’s second city, divided between regime and rebel forces since 2012.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled the offensive, which has made steady gains and threatens to deal Syria’s opposition its worst defeat of the country’s five-year civil war.

State television said on Sunday evening that the army had captured the districts of Karm al-Tahan and Myessar and advanced into the Qadi Askar neighbourhood.

State news agency SANA said the air force was dropping leaflets over rebel-held areas urging “militants to abandon their weapons and… allow civilians and the sick and wounded to leave”.

At least 311 civilians, including 42 children, have been killed in east Aleppo since the government began its assault, according to the Observatory.

Syrian army spokesman Brigadier General Samir Suleiman said the military had regained control of 45 to 50 percent of east Aleppo, and he accused rebels of hiding among civilians.

Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh is an excellently crafted dark thriller.

December 5, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

kahaani-2

Banner: Boundscript Motion Pictures Pen India Limited
Producers: Sujoy Ghosh & Jayantilal Gada
Director: Sujoy Ghosh
Star Cast: Vidya Balan, Arjun Rampal, Naisha Khanna, Jugal Hansraj, Tota Roychoudhury,
Kharaj Mukherjee, Kaushik Sen, Manini Chadha
Music: Clinton Cerejo

Producer – Director Sujoy Ghosh claim to fame has been his recent directorial venture TE3N and of course Kahani in the past and now he has yet again come up with an intriguing & riveting sequel of Kahani aptly named Kahani 2.

The scripted scenario of Kahaani 2 –
Durga Rani Singh film starts off with a day in the life of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan), which oscillates between her wheel chair ridden daughter Mini (Naisha Khanna / Tunisha Sharma) and her office (in that order). 1 day she returns home from her office to find her house empty and her darling daughter Mini missing. Soon after she receives an image of her daughter bound & gagged, along with a phone call from an unknown number stating that her daughter has been kidnapped and that she should reach a stipulated spot if she wants to save her daughter. A visibly distorted Mini wastes no time and rushes to the said spot. On the way, she meets with an untimely accident, which lands her in a coma. There enters the “promotion hungry” police officer Sub – Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal), who is the officer – in -charge of the case. While investigating, he gets hold of Vidya’s personal diary (in which she has written about all the events involving her & Mini), which shakes his world completely. When Inderjeet Singh reaches the hospital to meet Vidya Sinha, he gets a shock of his life when he discovers that Vidya Sinha’s face is an exact replica of a person he knew a long time ago named Durga Rani Singh. Unable to comprehend this, Inderjeet gets to work on the case to find out more whether the comatose accident victim is Vidyya Sinha or Durga Rani Singh. In the interim phase Inderjeet is informed by his superior officer that a dreaded killer & kidnapper Durga Rani Singh, was last spotted in their city. On his journey to uncover the truth Inderjeet discovers Vidya Sinha’s diary that shocks him completely.

Amongst all the sequel movies released recently director Sujoy Ghosh’ Kahani 2 is really captivating and stands apart from the rest of the herd of sequels raining this season and for this his entire crew & cast deserves a standing ovation. A special mention must be made of Editor Namrata Rao & Cinematographer Tapan Basu.

Performance wise Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh is a Vidya Balan film all the way. If Vidya Balan was the heart of Kahani she is the soul of the sequel namely Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh. The supremacy of Vidya Balan’s performance is so high that, it makes its predecessor Kahaani look like a teaser of what to expect from its sequel. In the true sense of the word, Vidya Balan owns the film totally, so much so that, it’s impossible to think of the Kahaani franchise without her. While On Arjun Rampal on his part has tried his best to march nay match up to Vidya Balan’s par excellence act. He enacts his role with utmost aplomb, conviction & confidence. Arjun Rampal, besides being excellent in his role, brings in a lot of compassion & smartness to his character. Next in line is the cute little child artiste namely Naisha Khanna who strongly makes her presence felt in the film and how! Director Sujoy Ghosh has extracted a superlative performance out of Naisa. Jugal Hansraj, who returns to the celluloid silver screen after a long hiatus is marvellos in tandem with his ever green screen presence.

Tail Piece: Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh is an excellently crafted dark thriller. At the Box Office turnstiles, the movie will be appreciated on the account of its engaging narrative. A must watch film.

Tum Bin 2 is like an old wine in a new bottle

December 5, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

tum-bin-2

Banner: T – Series & Benaras Mediaworks
Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar & Anubhav Sinha
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Star: Aditya Seal, Neha Sharma, Kanwaljit Singh & debutant Aashim Gulati
Music: Ankit Tiwari & Nikhil – Vinay

Director Anubhav Sinha’s last outing was the Shah Rukh Khan starrer sci – fi film Ra.One and now after a long hiatus he returns to carry forward the legacy of the original Tum Bin with a newly decorated package of Tum Bin 2 albeit with the same ingredients remixed.

The scripted scenerio of Tum Bin 2 kicks off with an untoward & unexpected skiing accident of Amar (Aashim Gulati). When the rescue team gives up their hope of finding Amar’s body, this leaves his fiancée Taran (Neha Sharma) & Amar’s loving & caring father Papaji (Kanwaljeet Singh) with no hope of finding him ever. Unable to bear the grief of Amar’s loss, Taran withdraws herself from the world & goes into a nutshell. One fine day, Papaji introduces his late friend’s son Shekhar (Aditya Seal) to Taran and her lovely & lively sisters. Seeing Taran in sorrow, Shekhar tries his level best to bring a smile on her face. Shekhar also helps Taran immensely in realising her dream of setting up a confectionary business. Amidst all the proceedings, Taran not just tries to forget her past & Amar, but also gradually falls in love with the happy – go – lucky Shekhar. Suddenly, one fine day, out of the blue, Papaji gets a call from Amar, whom everyone thought was dead long ago. Amar is extremely happy to be united with his loving family, especially Taran. While on one hand, love gets rekindled between Taran & Amar, on the other hand, Shekhar plans to leave everyone and let Taran & Amar have a happy life ahead together. The innocent Amar, who is totally unaware of the love affair between Taran & Shekhar, starts dreaming of his future with Taran. That’s when Taran confesses to Amar about her feelings for Shekhar.

This week the sequels of 2 film’s franchise Force & Tum Bin were released. So while Force 2 clinched its success spot at the Box – Office turnstiles Tum Bin 2 will definitely have the going tough as in the name of making a sequel director Anubhav Sinha seems to be heavily gripped with the hangover of the original Tum Bin. So he has just rehashed the heady cocktail of the earlier film. Even otherwise this age old tussle between 1 girl & 2 boys is totally outdated. And Tum Bin 2 offers nothing new. Yet what saves Tum Bin 2 is the mellifluous, melodious & foot tapping music of Ankit Tiwari & Nikhil – Vinay & of course the eye pleasing cinematography of Ewan Mulligan which is really top – notch.

Performance wise it is Neha Sharma who steals the thunder from both the boys Aashim Gulati & Aditya Seal. She is followed a close 2nd by Aditya Seal. He delivers a very sensitive as well as the happy – go – lucky act as per the demands of the role. He has really come a long way from his Ek Chotisi Love Story & Purani Jeans days. While the small screen sensation Aashim Gulati makes his Bollywood debut with Tum Bin 2 and in spite of his brief screen time he has given a good account of himself.

Tail Piece: Tum Bin 2 is like an old wine in a new bottle. It will gradually sail through the stormy Box – Office turnstiles on the strength of its music, cinematography & word of mouth publicity.

Popular Hollywood Actor To Feature In Dhanush’s Next

Actor Dhanush & director Karthik Subbaraj are all set to team up for a new film. This film is likely to be produced by Sri Thenandal Films banner. And the makers are also trying to rope in Hollywood actor Al Pacino for an important role in the project. The team is negotiating with the actor to work out the dates and other details. Since the film will be predominantly shot in USA, it won’t be a tough deal for the makers to bring Al Pacino on board. Earlier on the makers of Superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0 tried to rope in Arnold Schwarzenegger to play the lead villain and the Hollywood superstar was also keen to be part of the project. However issues related to international trade agreements made it impossible and now Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is acting in the film.

Force 2 is a power packed action thriller

December 5, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

force-2

Banner: Sunshine Pictures Pvt Ltd & J. A. Entertainment
Producers: Vipul Amrutlal Shah, Viacom Motion Pictures & John Abraham
Director: Abhinay Deo
Star Cast: John Abraham, Sonakshi Sinha, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Freddy Daruwala,
Narendra Jha, Vikram Kapadia, Patricia Mittler, Genelia D’Souza, Raj Babbar, Boman Irani & Adil Hussain
Music: Amaal Mallik, Gourov Roshin & Prasad Sashte

A cine goer always has a lot of expectations from a sequel of the original film. But 2 sequels of the earlier films releasing on the same day of the same week is a bit too much. It is but natural that the fans of the 2 franchises gets divided which certainly leaves its imprint on the results of their Box – Office turnstiles collections. The films in question are Force 2 & Tum Bin 2.

The scripted scenario of Force 2 kick starts with a series of killings of 3 vital Indian RAW agents in China. These killings not just shock the Indian RAW wing, but also sends them into tizzy about the crime suspects and their agenda behind these killings. Amidst all this, they also discover that there is a mole (informer / leak) in the Budapest Embassy, who is leaking all the vital information to the Chinese Government, for reasons best known to him only. In order to unearth this mole, the RAW officials assign Kamaljit Kaur aka KK (Sonakshi Sinha) on the job. She is joined by the raw & brutal Yashvardhan aka Yash (John Abraham) from the Mumbai police department. The reason why Yash joins KK in the mission, is to avenge the death of his Best Friend (Freddy Daruwala), who was amongst the 3 RAW agents killed. Amidst their mission to find the mole, Yash & KK are subjected to a series of uphill tasks, which makes it extremely difficult for them to unearth the mole. Just when Yash & KK think that they have solved the case, a shocking event happens that shuts down all the possibilities to solve the mystery.

Director Abhinay Deo after directing 2 films (Dehli Belly & Game) & 1 tv series (24) once again takes his directorial skills a notch higher with Force 2. The action genre of Force 2 keeps the cine goers hooked from “The Start” till “The End”. A well deserved mention must also be made of the behind – the – scenes team like Parvez Shaikh & Jasmeet Kleen (story & screenplay), Imre Juhasz & Mohana Krishna (cinematography), Amaal Mallik, Gourov Roshin & Prasad Sashte (music), Amitabh Shukla & Sanjay Sharma (Editing) & above all Franz Spilhaus (all action / stunt director).

Performance wise believe it or not but the shining stars of Force 2 are undoubtedly John Abraham & Sonakshi Sinha, who certainly complement each other in every scene together and individually too. Their sparkling chemistry is another asset of Force 2. Also they are in their best of element especially after Dishoom & Akira respectively. Next – in – line outstanding performers are Tahir Raj Bhasin, Freddy Daruwala, Narendra Jha, Vikram Kapadia, Patricia Mittler, Genelia D’Souza, Raj Babbar, Boman Irani & Adil Hussain.

Tail Piece: Force 2 is a power packed adrenaline pumping action thriller which is just the right film for both the multiplex as well as the single theatre cine goers. Even at the Box – Office turnstiles Force 2 will definately hit the bull’s eye.
