Four people who were part of a convoy evacuating the besieged districts of east Aleppo were killed by Syrian government forces, witnesses told Al Jazeera, before the agreement to evacuate tens of thousands of fighters and civilians was suspended.

Two men, who were part of the group, also said the entire convoy was briefly detained and told Al Jazeera’s Amro Halabi, reporting from east Aleppo, that security forces opened fire on evacuees before forcing them to return to the war-torn city.

“They forced us out of the vehicles, forced us to lay flat on the ground, stripped us of our clothes and then we heard gunfire,” one of the men said.

“When we looked up, we noticed three or four people were killed.”

Following the incident, the Syrian government suspended the evacuation that began on Thursday as part of a ceasefire deal to move civilians to rebel-held Idlib province.

The government also accused rebels of trying to smuggle out prisoners and heavy weapons.

More than 40 buses and ambulances had evacuated almost 3,000 people from east Aleppo to neighbouring Idlib province on Thursday. At the time of the deal’s suspension, the government-run SANA news agency reported that more than 8,000 residents of eastern Aleppo, among them fighters, had been evacuated.

Tens of thousands of people were still trapped inside east Aleppo and were too scared to leave their besieged districts, Al Jazeera’s Halabi said.

“Now the people are afraid and they are running away from the meeting point where they were supposed to gather in order to take the buses out of the besieged east Aleppo districts, they are in a state of horror and shock,” he said.

Zouhir al Shimale, an independent journalist in east Aleppo, was part of the convoy that was held up. He told Al Jazeera that in addition to being beaten, the civilians were also robbed of cash before being sent back.

“They took us after we reached regime areas, handcuffed us, killed four, and told us its payback. Then we came back,” he said on Twitter.

In another tweet, he said militias robbed evacuees “of all their money” before blocking them.

Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford, reporting from the city of Antakya in neighbouring Turkey, said that he received reports that Iranian militiamen were the ones who blocked the convoy.

“They blocked this convoy of around 20 vehicles from leaving east Aleppo. Another witness said those militias opened fire, took some men off the buses and stripped search them.”

He also described the situation in east Aleppo as “desperate”, before adding “a lot of the residents were scared to come out of their houses, they are very scared about moving independently into government-controlled areas”.

Russia, which backs the Syrian government, denied the convoy was stopped.

The evacuation began a month to the day after Syrian government forces launched a major offensive to retake all of Aleppo, and will hand the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad his biggest victory in more than five years of civil war.

On Friday, US President Barack Obama warned Assad that he would not be able to “slaughter his way to legitimacy” and also put responsibility on the Syrian regime’s Iranian and Russian backers for the civilian deaths in Aleppo.

“The world, as we speak, is united in horror at the savage assault by the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian regime on the city of Aleppo,” said Obama. “This blood and these atrocities are on their hands.”

Outgoing UN chief Ban Ki-moon called Aleppo a “synonym for hell”, before adding that he told the Security Council “we have collectively failed the people of Syria”.

Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city and once a key cultural and economic hub, has been divided between government forces and rebels since 2012.

In a video message to Syrians, Assad said the “liberation” of Aleppo was “history in the making”.

But Pawel Krzysiek, communications chief of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said there was “fear, desperation and anxiety” on the streets.

“People are waiting with children and elders,” said Krzysiek from Aleppo.

“It’s really cold here. They are on the streets burning plastic to keep warm. I can see hundreds, if not thousands, waiting to be evacuated.”

Petrol price hiked by Rs 2.21/litre; diesel by Rs 1.79

December 17, 2016 by Nasheman

petrol-price

New Delhi: Petrol price was today hiked by Rs 2.21 a litre and diesel by Rs 1.79 per litre, excluding local levies.

The price revision was to come into effect yesterday, but was deferred possibly to save the demonetisation-battered government from any blushes in Parliament. The revised rates will be effective from midnight tonight.

This increase excludes local levies. The actual hike after considering VAT would be Rs 2.84 per litre in Delhi for petrol and Rs 2.11 for diesel.

After the hike, petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 68.94 per litre from midnight tonight as against Rs 66.10 currently, said Indian Oil Corp, the nation’s largest fuel retailer.Similarly, a litre of diesel will cost Rs 56.68 as compared to Rs 54.57 now.

IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL) revise rates on 1st and 16th of every month based on average international price in the previous fortnight.

But an increase that was warranted because of a rise in international gasoline (petrol) price to USD 62.82 per barrel from USD 57.43 and that of diesel to USD 60.97 from USD 56.79 was not announced yesterday.

Industry sources said the deferment was because Parliament was in session and any hike would have added to the discomfort of the government, particularly when it is facing heat over hardships caused by currency demonetisation.

The Winter Session of Parliament ended this afternoon. Rates were last revised on December 1 when petrol price was hiked by a marginal 13 paise a litre, but diesel rates were cut by 12 paise.

Prior to the December 1 price change, rates were hiked by Rs 1.46 a litre in the case of petrol and Rs 1.53 per litre for diesel, excluding local levies, on November 16.

“The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and Rupee-US Dollar exchange rate warrant increase in selling price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision,” IOC said in a statement.

It said the movement of prices in the international oil market and foreign exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes.

The evacuation plan was meant to transfer tens of thousands to rebel-held Idlib [Omar Sanadiki/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

A ceasefire agreement to evacuate tens of thousands of fighters and civilians from the remaining rebel-held pockets of eastern Aleppo has been suspended.

Speaking to Reuters news agency on Friday, a Syrian government official overseeing the operation said it was suspended due to “obstructions”.

At the time of the deal’s suspension, the government-run SANA news agency reported that more than 8,000 residents of eastern Aleppo, among them fighters, had been evacuated.

State TV reported that rebel groups were attempting to smuggle prisoners and heavy weapons out with them, violating the evacuation deal.

The Turkish state news agency, meanwhile, said pro-government forces first attacked the convoy. Speaking to Reuters, a rebel commander confirmed the claim.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said talks between the Syrian government and opposition forces would take place soon in Kazakhstan, adding that Turkey would not speak directly to Syrian government officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier he was working closely with Turkey to try and start a new series of Syrian peace talks aimed at securing a nationwide ceasefire.

As part of an agreement between Turkey and Russia, tens of thousands of rebels and civilians were supposed to be evacuated from eastern Aleppo to rebel-held Idlib, allowing the Syrian government to take full control of the city after years of fighting.

The operation began on Thursday and was expected to take several days.

The agreement also allowed for the evacuation of thousands of civilians from Kefraya and Fua, two Shia-majority towns besieged by rebel forces.

Rebels allegedly shelled the towns on Friday morning around the same time the evacuation from eastern Aleppo was halted.

Al Jazeera’s Imtiaz Tyab, reporting from Gaziantep on the Turkish side of the Turkey-Syria border, said there were conflicting reports of who started the fighting.

“According to several sources, an Iranian-backed militia blocked a road that the evacuees would be using to reach the Aleppo countryside. It then started firing,” he said.

“According to the reports, they were protesting against this evacuation deal, which would see the villages of Fua and Kefraya evacuated in a similar way east Aleppo was.”

A Turkish official told Turkish news agency Anadolou that Syrian government forces had arrested at least 800 people before the suspension of the agreement.

‘Thousands still waiting’

Zouhir Al Shimale, a journalist in eastern Aleppo, reported that the evacuation had been moving at a snail’s pace.

“People were outside in the street overnight,” he told Al Jazeera on Friday morning, adding that the temperature had dipped below zero degrees Celsius in the city. “Thousands are still waiting out here.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned that action is needed to prevent a potential massacre.

The withdrawal began a month to the day after Syrian government forces launched a major offensive to retake all of Aleppo, and will hand the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad his biggest victory in more than five years of civil war.

The city, Syria’s second largest city and once a key cultural and economic hub, has been divided between government forces and rebels since 2012.

In a video message to Syrians, Assad said the “liberation” of Aleppo was “history in the making”.

“I have a great respect for Kapil Sharma and I salute him for literally elevating the status of the Stand Up Comdian’s” – Krushna Abhishek

December 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

krushna-abhishek

Krushna Abhishek is known more popularly as the “King of Comedy”. It is more because of his good sense of humor coupled with the spontaneous wit and humor and also his superb comic sense of timing which are all picture perfect. Caught up with Krushna in Sankraman Studio where he was doing a photo and promotional shoot for the 2nd Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India to be telecast on History TV18 Channel.

First of all enlighten us about the 2nd Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India to be telecast on History TV18 Channel?

In OMG! Yeh Mere India we will showcase the real India once again. An India which is unique as well as very beautiful too. Not only this we will show some unique stories which will be weird as well as interesting and the people involved with them are all sorts of people who are jara hatke, I mean they are also unique, intelligent as well as innovative and then people will say OMG!!! Which stands for Oh! My God India mein aise kamaal ke log bhi rehte hai aur aisi kamaal ki cheezein bhi hoti hai. For instance in Delhi there is a newspaper run by children in which they themselves do the reporting, interviewing, editing etc. At first the newspaper was of 1 page only but some organization in Delhi came to their rescue and they have not only increased the pages but it is also doing very well. There are many such unique stories but I won’t reveal more. Each episode is of half an hour and will have 4 stories and it kicked off on 6th Oct, 2016 to be telecast on every Thursday @ 8pm. We have a total of 10 episodes and the viewers will get to see 40 stories in all. Which in itself is a unique thing. And the 2nd season is also being telecast on History TV18 Channel.

OMG! Yeh Mera India also had its 1st Season. So how different will its 2nd Season be?

Yes! That’s true. History TV18 had telecast the 1st Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India in Jan, 2016. Which had proved to be very successful. At that time people from the Channel had gone to varied parts of India to scout & shoot the unique stories of India and then I used to host at least 4 stories from the Channel’s Studio. All the uniquely different stories were very well received by the viewers all over India. Normally a Channel suspends a show after the telecast of its 1st Season. But seeing the overwhelming response of the 1st Season, the Channel decided to have the 2nd Season from Oct, 2016. But this time with a difference. In spite of my over busy schedule I have personally traveled in many parts of India to scout for many more such unique stories and interact with the characters of this unique stories on a personal level and have a live telecast too after showcasing their stories. I met them, I interviewed them and also had lots of “masti” with them.

Would you like to add anything more on OMG! Yeh Mera India?

Actually when I did the 1st Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India I did not feel so much involved or attached to it. Frankly I had done the show at that particular point of time strictly on a very professional level. But when the hosting of the 2nd Season came my way I myself accompanied the team in different parts all of India and interacted with such amazing people of India and came to know their unique, weird and interesting stories and I was like shocked and surprised out of my wits and I felt Oh! My God toh hamara India aisa bhi hai!!! l was enlightened, entertained, discovered and learnt many new things about our India and today you must have seen that I am totally involved and attached to the show on a personal level too. In fact in the promos I have appealed to my fans and viewers, “If you really love me then don’t miss even a single episodes of the 2nd Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India starting 6th Oct, 2016 on every Thursday @ 8 pm.

You and Bharati were hosting the show “Comedy Nights Bachao” and now Mona Singh is the host and you both are contestants. Besides you are still making a lot of your presence felt during the show. Comment.

This is the new season of “Comedy Nights Bachao” and now it is known as “Comedy Nights Taaza” and barring me and Bharati even all the contestants are new. No doubt we were appreciated a lot during the show in its 1st Season. But we along with the channel wanted some freshness in the show and hence the 2nd Season is called “Comedy Nights Taaza”. As for everyone alleging that I am still making a lot of my presence felt then I would say yes because the show is still our baby. And with due respect to Mona Singh, who I would say is a very good host. But since the 2nd Season has just begun there are times when I feel like covering up for the minor loopholes and lapses and all for the betterment of the show. But all this arrangement is for a brief period, everything will gradually change in its due course of time.

How is your equation with Kapil Sharma now after all the verbal warfare between the two of you on account of your individual shows on different Channels Sony & Colors?

I strongly believe in letting bygones be bygones, no point in digging up the mud slinging grave, all thanks to the media. Anyways I have a great respect for Kapil Sharma and I salute him for literally elevating the status of the Stand Up Comdian’s, both on the artistic as well as the monetary level. That’s it.

You had a very harrowing struggling phase for big screen roles before you focused your attention to the small screen comic shows. Right!

Once again I would say that I always let bygones be bygones be they any issues concerning my professional as well as personal life. Yes I did have a very tough struggling phase as far as acting in films are concerned. The fault is all mine because I ended up doing some forgettable films. Then came the phase of Bhojpuri films which was also did not prove to be earth shaking although I have ended up doing dozens of Bhojpuri films with topmost Bhojpuri heroines like Rani Chatterji and Monalisa. Besides I could not make much stride in the Hindi film scenario too in spite of doing big films like Bol Bachchan and Entertainment. I do have a couple of good Hindi films to resurrect my position in the Hindi film scenario. Let’s see what future has in store for me.

Why did you give up doing Bhojpuri films, maybe by now you would have hit the Bull’s Eye even in that arena?

Maybe you are right. But at that juncture my small screen’s comic and reality shows came my way and I succeeded in carving a niche for myself through these shows. And I gave up on Bhojpuri films as I just could not spare enough time for them. But it has been a decade now and I am happy doing what I am doing as I not only got recognition but also earned a lot of name and fame through my comic shows. But I think I am going in for a new change of image since I did the 1st Season of OMG! Yeh Mera India. Since then whenever I am seen on airports or other public places, people just come up to me and thank me for enlightening them about India as they really like and appreciate me in this new avatar of the host of OMG! Yeh Mera India. Nobody talks about my comic shows at such times.

As a parting shot when I asked Krushna to spare a few words about his better half Kashmira Shah, Krushna just winked and grinned widely, then politely opened his Vanity Van’s door for me, signaling “The End” of the Interview session.

Fifth Test: England post 284/4 on Day One

December 16, 2016 by Nasheman

moeen-ali

Chennai: England rode on excellent batting by Moeen Ali and Joe Root to post 284/4 in their first innings on the opening day of the fifth and final cricket Test here on Friday.

Ali was unbeaten on 120 at the close with Ben Stokes batting on five at the other end.

Root was unlucky to miss out on what would have been a well-deserved century as he was snared by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja while on 88 following an unsuccessful review.

With the visitors struggling at 21/2 in the morning session, Root and Ali came together to add 146 runs between them to take them out of trouble.

Jadeja was the most successful among the Indian bowlers with figures of 3/73.
