Australia: Great Barrier Reef coral dies from bleaching

March 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Extreme bleaching has caused the death of large amounts of coral on Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef, prompting the government to implement its highest response level to help tackle the crisis.

New diver surveys conducted off Cape York, Australia’s remote far northeastern tip, found up to 50 percent coral mortality because of coral bleaching, caused by rising sea temperatures, the government announced on Sunday.

“The corals in the remote far north of the reef experienced extremely hot and still conditions this summer, and were effectively bathed in warm water for months, creating heat stress that they could no longer cope with,” said Russell Reichelt, the chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

He said a level three response meant stepped-up surveys to better understand and tackle threats to the reef.

Reichelt said, however, that the “extent and severity of bleaching varies greatly across the reef” and weather conditions “have so far spared most sections of the 344,400 square kilometre marine park from coral die-off”.

The Great Barrier Reef, comprising nearly 3,000 reefs and 900 islands, stretching 2,000km along Australia’s northeast coast and is considered the world’s largest living structure.

More than $3bn is generated each year from the Reef’s tourism industry.

The WWF, the wildlife protection group, said on Monday that while it welcomed the government’s action, higher-level policy decisions needed to be taken to address the root cause of the problem.

“This is the worst coral bleaching event ever to hit this most pristine part of the Great Barrier Reef,” said WWF spokesman Richard Leck.

“We can turn this around. The reef can recover but we must speed up the shift to clean, renewable energy and we must build reef resilience by reducing runoff pollution from farms and land clearing.

“Australia must speed up the transition to clean energy – like solar and wind – by setting a target of 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035.”

India is not just Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan: Tharoor takes a dig at BJP

March 21, 2016 by Nasheman

shashi tharoor

New Delhi: In an apparent dig at the ruling BJP over its stand on the JNU row, Tharoor said people should have the right to choose what they believe is correct and still be tolerant of others’ ideas in a democracy.

“Today nationalism is decided by whether or not one can say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. I am happy to say it, but should I also oblige everyone to say it?

“Our Constitution gives people the right not to say it just as it gives people the right to say it as well. I will choose when to say it and that’s democracy,” Tharoor said addressing students at JNU on Sunday night.

He called for an India ‘more accepting of diversity’ which he said has been the tradition throughout history.

“India is not just Hindi, Hindu and Hindustan. We want an India with both Krishna and Kanhaiya Kumar. We want in India people from every corner of this vast land an equal stake in our future.

“If we understand that the Indian civilisation allows many religions, celebrates range of opinions and is today sustained by constitutional democracy which stands for certain values that all of us claim as our own, if this is the Indian legacy we can live, then we can all stand under that flag and celebrate,” he said.

Tharoor was speaking on ‘JNU and Nationalism’ outside the administrative hall of the varsity which has been the centre of protests ever since sedition charges were slapped on three students over an event held where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

The former Union minister appreciated the students for stirring a debate on vital issues in India, saying student days are the days “to expand one’s consciousness”.

“You may have come here for education but you are also educating the nation. What is happening here has given the whole nation an education in the vital issues of dissent and democracy, sedition and of course of ‘azaadi’ (freedom),” he said.

Tharoor’s nearly 40-minute long speech was dotted with historical anecdotes and personal experiences and he repeatedly quoted personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru and Everlyn Beatrice Hall to drive home the idea of tolerance and diversity and their importance in India.

Asaram Bapu rape case: Victim’s father gets threat

March 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Asaram Bapu

Shahjahanpur: Days after a sharp shooter who killed 3 witnesses in Asaram cases was nabbed, father of the girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Asaram Bapu, has been threatened by an unidentified person to withdraw the case or face dire consequences.

“Some person had called me yesterday threatening me to withdraw the case against Asaram Bapu. The caller said that if the case is not withdrawn, I will be killed,” the victim’s father said in his police complaint yesterday.

Superintendent of Police, Manoj Kumar said that security has been beefed up at the victim’s residence and probe is on in the matter.

On March 13, Kartik Haldar, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s alleged henchman, suspected to have shot dead three key witnesses in rape cases filed against the religious leader, was arrested by Anti-Terrorism Squad of Gujarat.

He was allegedly involved in the killings of Asaram’s personal doctor Amrut Prajapati in June 2014, his assistant-cum-cook Akhil Gupta in January 2015 and another key witness, Kripal Singh, on July 10, 2015 in different parts of the country, said a release.

All of them were shot from close range as part of a conspiracy to eliminate those who had given their testimonies against Asaram, ATS said.

Kripal Singh was a clerk in the office of a transporter whose minor daughter had lodged a case of sexual assault against Asaram in Jodhpur.

Asaram had allegedly sexually assaulted the 16-year-old victim at his ashram near Jodhpur in Rajasthan in 2013.

World T20: Root hits 83 as England stun South Africa

March 19, 2016 by Nasheman

Joe Root

Mumbai: Star batsman Joe Root smashed a match-winning 83 as a spirited England side chased down South Africa’s massive total of 229 to win a nail-biting contest by two wickets in the Group 1 clash in the World Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Wankhede Stadium here on Friday.

Batting first, the Proteas posted a commendable 229/4 in 20 overs, thanks to half-centuries each from Hashim Amla, Jean-Paul Duminy and Quinton de Kock.

In reply, England opener Jason Roy struck a quickfire 43 off 16 which was followed by Root’s 83 off 44 that helped team chase down the total as they posted 230/8 in 19.4 overs.

Chasing a massive target of 230, openers Roy and Alex Hales (17 off 7) got England off to a flying start scoring 44 runs in just two overs.

The run feast ended as Sean Abbott got the much needed breakthrough by getting rid of Hales in the third over.

This didn’t stop Roy from playing his shots as the right-handed batsman took on the bowling striking five fours and three sixes before giving his wicket away in the fifth over leaving his team at 71/2.

All-rounder Ben Stokes (15) who was promoted up the batting order, didn’t trouble the opposition much as he along with skipper Eoin Morgan (12) returned back to the pavilion in space of four overs to have England in a bit of trouble at 111/4 in tenth over.

From there, on Root did not allow the required run-rate to climb high as he kept on finding boundaries at regular intervals to bring up his half-century in 29 balls and take team past 150-run mark.

Jos Buttler (21) who was giving good support to Root was also dismissed to end the duo’s 75-run partnership for fifth wicket.

Root held on playing sensibly to take team past 200-run mark before giving away his wicket in 19th over.

Moeen Ali (12 not out) and Adil Rashid (0 not out) to take team past victory line.

Kyle Abbott (3-41) and Kagiso Rabada (2-50) were the pick of the South African bowlers.

Earlier on put into bat, openers Amla (58 off 31) and De Kock (52 off 24) got the Proteas off to a rollicking start, scoring 83 runs in the powerplay.

Playing a flurry of shots all round the ground, the left-handed De Kock brought up his half-century in just 21 balls striking seven boundaries and three sixes.

But just when he was looking good to take the game away from the opposition, off-spinner Ali struck in the eighth over to send him packing. Amla-De Kock added 96 runs for the first wicket.

Incoming batsman A.B. de Villiers (16) failed to make a big impact this time around as he got went out cheaply to have the Proteas reduced to 114/2 in ninth over.

The right-handed Amla after being dropped by Reece Topley when he was batting at nine off the bowling off Ali, proved to be a bit costly for the Englishmen as he went on to score his fourth T20I fifty off just 25 balls. He struck seven boundaries and three sixes.

Amla and skipper Faf du Plessis (17) were then dismissed in space of four overs but ensured team went past the 150-run mark.

Next up, Duminy (54) and David Miller (28) helped team post a goo total.

Ali (2-34) was the pick of the England bowlers.

Brief scores: South Africa 229/4 in 20 overs (Hashim Amla 58, Jean-Paul Duminy 54 not out, Quinton de Kock 52; Moeen Ali 2-34) vs England 230/8 in 19.4 overs (Joe Root 83, Jason Roy 43; Kyle Abbott 3-41, Kagiso Rabada 2-50)

Istanbul bombing: At least five killed in Turkish city

by Al Jazeera

An explosion believed to have been caused by a suicide bomber has hit the popular Istiklal Street in central Istanbul’s Taksim square area.

Government officials said at least five people were killed and 36 were injured – seven seriously – in Saturday morning’s explosion.

The suspected suicide bomber is believed to be among those killed. Twelve foreign citizens were among the wounded, including an unknown number of Israelis.

Footage from the scene showed police and emergency services cordoning off the street, which has been completely cleared of people.

Witnesses told Al Jazeera that hundreds of people ran in panic away from the site of the explosion, moments after the incident.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Istiklal street is a long pedestrian thoroughfare that winds its way through the Beyoglu neighbourhood from Taksim Square.

It is rimmed by hundreds of shops and would have been filled with pedestrians at the time of the explosion.

Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal said the location of the explosion was the equivalent of a bomb going off in Oxford St in London or Fifth Avenue in New York.

The explosion comes as Turkey is on edge following two recent suicide bomb attacks in the capital, Ankara, which were claimed by a Kurdish group, that is an off-shoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Turkey has been fighting on multiple fronts. As part of a US-led coalition, it is battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), which has seized territory in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.

It is also battling the PKK in its southeast, where a two-and-a-half-year ceasefire collapsed last July, prompting the worst violence since the 1990s.

Turkey sees the unrest in its largely Kurdish southeast as deeply linked to events in northern Syria, where the Kurdish YPG militia has seized territory as it fights both ISIL and rebels battling President Bashar al-Assad.

ISIL has carried out at least four bomb attacks on Turkey since June 2015, including a suicide bombing which killed 10 German tourists in central Istanbul in January.

Delhi’s Sufi Conference seen as a conspiracy to pit Indian Muslims against one another

March 19, 2016 by Nasheman

PM Narendra Modi with Hazrat Syed Muhammad Ashraf Ashrafi at the opening ceremony of the World Islamic Sufi Conference in New Delhi.

by Zafarul-Islam Khan, Milli Gazette

A four-day international “Sufi” conference was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 17 March. He said in his address that Islam does not teach terrorism. He said, “The fight against terrorism is not a confrontation against any religion. It cannot be. It is a struggle between the values of humanism and the forces of inhumanity. It is not a conflict to be fought only through military, intelligence or diplomatic means… It is a battle that must be won through the strength of our values and the real message of religions. As I have said before, we must reject any link between terrorism and religion. Those who spread terror in the name of religion are anti-religious.” He further said, “When we think of the 99 names [attributes] of Allah, none stand for force and violence, and that the first two names denote compassionate and merciful. Allah is Rahman and Raheem.” He added that “When the spiritual love of Sufism, not the violent force of terrorism, flows across the border, this region will be the paradise on earth that Amir Khusrau spoke about… Terrorism divides and destroys us. Indeed, when terrorism and extremism have become the most destructive forces of our times, the message of Sufism has global relevance.” Modi added, “At the dawn of Independence some chose to go away and, I believe, it also had to do with colonial politics of that time.” He underlined that leaders like Maulana Azad, and spiritual leaders such as Maulana Hussain Madani, and millions and millions of ordinary citizens rejected the idea of division on the basis of religion.

Thousands of delegates from various parts of India and about a hundred foreign guests are attending this event which is being organised by a fairly new organisation called “All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board,” headed by Hazrat Syed Muhammad Ashraf Ashrafi. It belongs to the Barelwi Muslim sub-sect who claim to represent the majority of the Subcontinent Muslims though others contest this claim. Due to rampant poverty and illiteracy in their ranks, Barelwis have traditionally failed to occupy the political space they claim. The grand event in Delhi comes in the wake of holding dozens of smaller conferences across the country during the last few months.

Barelwis are Hanafis like their rival Deobandis who are more organised and have traditionally enjoyed a strong leadership. The Barelwis, who call themselves “Ahl-e Sunnat”, are followers of A’la Hazrat Ahmad Raza Khan (1856-1921) who laid the foundation of this new sub-sect in early twentieth century.

Both Deobandis and Barelwis follow the same Hanafi fiqh (jurisprudence) school and both are sufis, while the Barelwis pay stress on the glorification of the Prophet and on paying visits to and praying at sufi dargahs (graves of saints) which is objected to by the Deobandis who consider it bid’at (innovation). Both groups try to control mosques and madrasahs through which Muslim masses are influenced.

Barelwis have been apolitical traditionally while Deobandis have been active in politics even during the struggle against the British colonial rule. A section of Barelwis has now joined hands with the BJP while many other Barelwis continue to consider the BJP as an ultra-nationalist Hindu party which is inimical to Muslims and therefore, they maintain a distance from it.

As soon as the news of the forthcoming Sufi conference was out, a number of important leaders of the Indian Muslim community in a press statement on 11 February warned Indian Muslims against the conspiracy to push them into inter-sectarian fights. In a joint statement, these leaders said that the elements which served their political aims by pitting Muslims and Hindus in violence against one another in the past, have now hatched a conspiracy to push Muslims of various sects to fight each other. The leaders alleged that the Indian government is providing funds “freely” for this purpose. They said that this policy is neither beneficial for the country nor is it going to help any community. They said that the organisers are trying to spread sectarian chaos in the name of Sufism, and are falsely accusing some Muslim groups of being supporters of terrorism.

On 7 March the organisers of the Sufi event accepted that the government is helping them. They justified it saying that such a big event cannot be organised without government help.

On 8 March, influential leaders of the Barelwi sect denounced the forthcoming conference. In a statement issued at Mumbai, they raised questions over the purpose of this programme. A statement issued by the All-India Sunni Jamiat Ulama of Maharashtra and Raza Academy among others said that this “Sufi Conference” enjoys the support of certain powers which want Indian Muslims to suffer in the name of “sect” and “faith”. The statement, in particular, objected to the invitation extended to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend it as the chief guest. The statement said that three important religious centres of the Barelwi scholars are not attending this conference including the leaders of the important Barelwi centres at Bareilly Sharif, Budaun Sharif, etc. The statement further said that “attending this conference may cause certain religious and political harm to the Indian Muslims, which compelled the ulama to skip it. The decision was taken in view of safeguarding Muslims from the lurking dangers.” The statement mentioned a number of influential scholars of the Barelwi sect who have decided not to attend the conference including leaders of the important Barelwi seats at Bareilly Sharif, Marahrah Sharif, Kichchocha Sharif and the influential seat of Barelwi learning, Jamia Ashrafia Mubarakpur (Azamgarh).

Observers in the Indian Muslim community see the Sufi conference as an attempt by the BJP to divide Muslims with a plan to carve a vote-bank among a certain large group of Muslims. Observers see that the BJP is moving from Hindu-Muslim to Muslim-Muslim strife.

The most influential leader and recognised face of Barelwis in India, Maulana Tauqeer Raza, said in a press statement on 17 March that the RSS’ hand is behind this conference. He said, “through this conference a game is being played to spread hatred against Muslims. There is no harm if the organisers of the Sufi conference come out of the sufi curtain and do politics openly. But no Muslim will tolerate that they mortage the whole Sunnism with the RSS… In today’s world nothing remains secret. You cannot befool anyone today. Everyone know the game behind this conference. RSS wants to pit Muslims against each other on the basis of their maslaks (schools of thought) and for this it is using some people.” Maulana Tauqeer Raza went on to say, “History is witness to the fact that kings bowed their heads at the doors of the Sufis. No sufi ever knocked the doors of a king. This is happening for the first time in history that in the name of Sufism, help is being accepted form the Prime Minister and the RSS. This is the same prime minister who is accused of the mass murder of 3000 Muslims in Gujarat. Some sellers of conscience are bowing in front of Modi. Muslims will never forgive this…All ulama, Sufis, caretakers of khanqahs, imams and administrators of madrasahs not only oppose this alliance with the RSS but are also boycotting it.”

As assembly elections in a number of states approach, BJP and its allied organisations are preparing for a fresh bout of violence to polarise the voters on communal lines. With the new strategy, the party may win some voters from among the Barelwi sub-community while defaming other Muslims as supporters of terrorism. The organisers of the Sufi event have been repeatedly blaming other Muslim groups as supporters of terrorism while the fact is that every Muslim group and organisation in India has condemned terrorism and issued umpteen statements and fatwas to this effect. This unequivocal attitude by Indian Muslim community leaders is responsible for checking the terror menace among Indian Muslims.

The conference and the newfound bonhomie between some Barelwi leaders and the Modi government is seen by other Muslim groups as pitting Sufis/Barelwis against Deobandis/Wahabis which is not in the largers interests of Indian Muslims.

Dear Javed Akhtar, good luck pandering to fascism: Asad Zaidi

March 19, 2016 by Nasheman

javed-akhtar

I don’t care to know whether saying ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ is my duty or not but it is my right

(Javed Akhtar in his final speech in Rajya Sabha)
He then chanted ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ a number of times.

* * *

Same day Waris Pathan, MLA, was suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for refusing to chant ‘Bharat mata ki jai’. He apparently did not have the right to not chant it.

* * *

For those who remember the period when the Salim-Javed team ruled the roost in Bombay, Javed Akhtar’s latest rhetorical flourish in the Parliament comes as no surprise. One can only quote ill-fated Mughal ruler Jahandar Shah’s immortal line:

pahunchī vahīn pe khāk jahān kā khamīr thā

Dust rose, flew to other places, to finally settle back at the place of its origin

The loutish duo of Salim-Javed was primarily responsible for constructing the undemocratic ‘angry young man’ avenger figure and the subsequent rise of proto-Fascist cinema in India in the 1970s and the 80s. For the twosome, who still remain unrepentant, there could be no forgiveness. This screenplay and dialogue writing team cynically exploited the political disillusionment and mass social discontent to create a popular demand for authoritarian and extra-constitutional solutions for the problems of the day. Taking the law into one’s own hands and wreaking vengeance were the main characteristics of their hero figures. Theirs was a cinema tailored to fit the needs of Sanjay Gandhi’s brand of politics. It took more than one and a half decade for their stranglehold over the Hindi film to loosen. In the meantime the team broke up. Javed, clearly cleverer of the two, carried on along the same line for some time, looking for an opportunity for a make-over.

The made-up secular icon, litfest fixture, re-formed messenger of peace and amity, and an all-purpose son of India we know today as Javed Akhtar belongs to this late period.

But another transformation may soon be coming. As Allama Iqbal said:

Sitāron se āge jahān aur bhī hain abhī ishq ke imtihān aur bhī hain

Other worlds exist beyond the stars—
More tests of love are still to come.

Two Indians among 62 killed in FlyDubai plane crash in Russia

March 19, 2016 by Nasheman

FlyDubai

Moscow: At least 62 people were killed on Saturday when a passenger jet crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, media reports said.

The Dubai Media Office says those killed in the crash of the FlyDubai airliner in Russia include two Indians.

Flydubai flight FZ981 was en route from Dubai and crashed while trying to land, RT News reported.

Air-traffic control and local emergency services confirmed that the Boeing 737-800 jet crashed near the runway during a second approach in conditions of poor visibility killing all 61 on board — 55 passengers, six crew members.

“During the landing approach a Boeing-737 crashed. It had 55 passengers on board. All of them died,” a regional official told TASS news agency.

CCTV camera footage posted on YouTube claimed to have captured the moment of the explosion as the aircraft impacted the ground. However, its authenticity could not be immediately verified.

Emergency crews have already put out the fire, according to an airport source.

The airport has closed until further notice.
