SC to hear plea challenging President’s Rule in Arunachal

January 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Wednesday the Congress’ plea challenging the imposition of the President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh. An apex court bench headed by Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar said that the matter would be heard at 2 p.m.

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday approved the cabinet recommendation to impose central rule in Arunachal Pradesh and keep the assembly in suspended animation, a measure described by the Congress, which rules the border state, as a “murder of constitution and democracy” on Republic Day.

“President of India has signed a proclamation under article 356(1) of the constitution, imposing President’s Rule in relation to the state of Arunachal Pradesh and keeping the legislative assembly of the state in suspended animation with effect from January 26,” said a home ministry statement.

“Taking cognisance of the constitutional breakdown that has taken place in the state as reported by the governor of Arunachal Pradesh, the union cabinet in its meeting held on January 24, had recommend to the President to issue such proclamation,” it added.

The Congress slammed the Narendra Modi-led government for rushing to impose President’s rule in the northeastern state, and “disrespecting” the Supreme Court by bypassing it when it was hearing the matter.

Dalit scholar issue: 6 students on fast moved to health centre

January 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Rohith Vemula

Hyderabad: Six of the seven students of the Hyderabad Central University (HCU), on hunger strike to protest the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, have been shifted to a health centre even as the agitators today took out a march to the residence of the interim head of the institution.

The students, who had given a nationwide university strike call, marched to the residence of the interim head of the institution and then went outside the campus and burnt the effigy of the Vice-chancellor, whose ouster they have been seeking.

“Six (students) were shifted (to the health centre) yesterday”, Ravindra Kumar, chief medical officer said.

One student is continuing with the hunger strike, which resumed three days back after the first batch of his colleagues who went on fast were moved to the health centre.

The students first marched to the residence of the officiating Vice-Chancellor Vipin Srivastava in the staff quarters.

Srivastava was given the charge of the institution after VC Aappa Rao went on leave amid escalation of protests last week.

But selection of Srivastava as interim head of the institution was stiffly objected to by the students and SC/ST staff forums alleging he headed the Executive Council sub-committee whose decisions were “responsible for the death of Rohith” and was one of the accused in the death of another dalit student in 2008.

Srivastava had yesterday made a fresh appeal to students to help restore normalcy on the campus.

Rohith was found hanging in a hostel room on the HCU campus on January 17, sparking strong reactions on the campus and across the country.

Rohith and four other students, all from the dalit community, were suspended last year by the varsity for allegedly attacking an ABVP leader.

The suspension of the four students were revoked last week after the issue snowballed into a major political row with the agitation drawing support from parties other than the BJP.

Protesting against Constitution Hindu Mahasabha observes black day on R-Day

January 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Akhil Bharatiya hindusabha

Meerut: At a time when the country is engrossed in Republic Day celebrations, at least 50 persons under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha waved black flags to observe ‘Black Day’ and ‘mourn’ the Constitution of India.

The leaders of the Hindutva outfit claimed to have been celebrating the day for the past five decades to put forward their demand of declaring India a ‘Hindu Rasthra’ and protest against the Constitution which claims that India is a ‘secular country.’

“The Partition of India took place on the basis of religion and eventually India was declared a secular country. Had India been secular, it would have had a Uniform Civil Code, which is not the case. We have been observing this day for over five decades now and will continue until India is declared a Hindu Rashtra”, said Ashok Kumar Sharma, national vice president, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.

To mark ‘Black Day’ or ‘Kaala Divas’ – as the party members call it, member of the organization waved black flags at the office of Hindu Mahasabha on Sharda road on the eve of R-Day.

Bharat Rajput, district president, Hindu Mahasabha, Meerut, said, “We do not believe in the Constitution of India and have been protesting against it for the past 50 years. Secularism doesn’t exist in India and that is why we mourn the Constitution. When India was divided, Pakistan was given the title of Islamic state then why was India not given the title of a Hindu Rashtra? It is this Constitution, which has failed to recognize India as a Hindu state that all of us are against.”

Earlier, arrests used to take place whenever black flags were waved outside the office but the court refused arrests after 1987. Every year, party members hand over a memorandum to the station officer of Bhrampuri police station, who further gives it to the district magistrate.

Chiranjeev was an emotional journey for me: Director Ramesh More

January 27, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Ramesh More

Director Ramesh More’s, of Champions fame, latest released film Chiranjeev deals with a rural oriented superstitious custom that plagues a particular village in the interiors.

So what is your latest released film Chirajeev all about?

First of all, let me clarify one thing that my latest released film Chiranjeev does not represent the name of a person but it signifies the subject of Chiranjeev that revolves around the blind superstitious faith in rural India of the era of 1980s. The lead hero Bharat Jadhav is not a lunatic person as is believed by the innocent villagers.

What does this Chiranjeev custom signifies?

The Chiranjeev custom signifies the age old belief in the village that at least one member of every household will upheld the blind custom, in which he is declared a mad person come what may.

So what happens then?

My main protagonist Bharat Jadhav revolts against this age old custom and declares openly that he is not a lunatic person as believed by everyone in the village. And ultimately he succeeds in making people believe in his sanity, thereby putting an end to the superstitious belief.

What are the highlights of the film Chiranjeev?

The highlight of the film is the overall par excellence performance of the lead actor Bharat Jadhav. Besides lending him able support are Alka Kubal, Kishore Kadam, Bhargavi Chirmule, Ravi Kale, Suhasini Deshpande, Sandhya Kamble & debutante actor Rohit Nair in a very special role.

What else would you like to add?

The film Chiranjeev was shot at the varied locales in Konkan. The film has been produced by Ramdas Menon of Mumbai Cine International and Carnival Pictures. My expectations from the film are good and I hope that the audiences live up to my expectations. Period!

Bumrah, Kohli help India win 1st T20I against Australia

January 26, 2016 by Nasheman

viratkohli

Adelaide: A strong bowling performance, coupled with a quickfire half-century by Virat Kohli helped India to a 37-run victory over Australia in the first Twenty20 International (T20I) at the Adelaide Oval here on Tuesday.

Chasing 189, Australia started strongly before losing wickets at regular intervals to slump to 151 all out in 19.3 overs. young pacer Jasprit Bumrah had a memorable T20I debut, returning figures of 3-23 in 3.3 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja (2-21), Ravichandran Ashwin (2-28) and another debutant, Hardik Pandya (2-37) also bagged a couple of wickets each as India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Ashish Nehra (1-28) gave away a lot of runs in his first spell before clinching a wicket towards the end.

Earlier, Kohli stiched together a 134-run stand with Suresh Raina which brought the Indian innings back on track after the visitors had suffered a couple of early blows.

The Delhi batsman remeained unbeaten on 90 runs, smashing nine fours and two sixes during his 55-ball stint. Raina batted excellently at the other end, scoring 41 runs off 34 deliveries with three hits to the fence and a six. The duo helped India post 188/3 in their 20 overs. Kohli was adjudged the man of the match.

Captain Aaron Finch was Australia’s highest scorer with 44. He had four boundaries and a coule of sixes in his 33-ball innings.

Put in to bat by Australia, India were off to a flying start with Rohit Sharma producing the early fireworks. The Mumbai right-hander took a special liking to Shaun Tait’s bowling, hitting the pacer for a six and a four in the first over and then another couple of boundaries in the third.

With opening pacers Tait and Kane Richardson unable to control the Indian batsmen, Australia captain Aaron Finch was forced to make a bowling change, bringing James Faulkner and Shane Watson into the attack.

Faulkner was unlucky to miss out on a wicket in his opening over as a loose shot from Rohit saw the ball come off the top edge of the bat and fly towards third man where Cameron Boyce dropped a sitter.

But the disappointed home fans did not have to wait too long to celebrate as Watson struck twice in the next over. The right-armer sent back the dangerous Rohit with his very first ball as the opener drove an off-cutter straight to Faulkner at mid-on.

Watson dismissed Shikhar Dhawan just four balls later with a slower one as the Delhi batsman’s mistimed shot offered an edge to Matthew Wade behind the stumps.

That saw Kohli and Raina come together and they handled the Australian bowling with ease and by the time the partnership cam to an end in the final over, they had alrady guided the visitors to a big score.

Raina was unlucky to miss out on a half-century, and was dismissed while moving across the stumps and attempting to steer a Faulkner on the off-stump to the on-side. But the left-hander mistimed the shot as the ball went on to his the stumps.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni strode to the middle and brought the crowd to their feet by hitting his first two balls for a six and a four to end the Indian innings on a high note.

The Australians had strong start to their chase with openers Aaron Finch and David Warner going great guns. Although Warner departed in the sixth over after miscuing an attempted pull of Bumrah, Finch and Steven Smith found the gaps at frequent intervals to maintain a high scoring rate.

They scored 42 runs between them in just 23 deliveries before Jadeja and Ashwin struck in bac to back overs to peg back the Australians. Debutant Travis Head never looked comfortable during his five-ball stay in the middle before being trapped leg before by Jadeja.

Watson did not last long before offering skier to Nehra at short fine leg while trying to sweep an Ashwin delivery. Pandya then sent back Cris Lynn and Matthew Wade in consecutive overs to plunge Australia into deep trouble.

Now the new system has sparked fierce debate among the production sector as to whether it is a boon or a bane.

January 26, 2016 by Nasheman

Nasheman

Nasheman Weekly, the country’s largest selling Urdu weekly today completes 54 years of glorious publication, establishing a new benchmark in Urdu journalism.

Founded in 1962 by the late Usman Asad, Nasheman currently has a circulation of over 1.20 lac; a feat hardly matched by any other Urdu publication in India.

Nasheman, an Urdu word for ‘nest’, garnered a legendary status among our readers from the very onset. With popular weekly columns like ‘Thapdakhen’ (slaps or smacks), the paper depicts the prevalent social and political conditions of the times in the most starkest terms. Such is Nasheman’s popularity, that it is bought by one, sold to another for double the price, and then sold again to triple the price.

The paper is circulated not only in India but also abroad, copies of it are shipped to UAE, Saudi Arabia and many other countries.

Under the founder’s son, Rizwan Asad’s current editorship, we have remained true to our essence. We still are the staunchest critique of socio-political inequities, we still are the largest selling Urdu weekly in the country.

The year 2014, also saw Nasheman venture into the world of online journalism, with the daily online English edition, which explores news and analysis from an independent, alternative perspective. We would be also starting a print edition in English in the coming months.

Malaysian police said 13 bodies, believed to be Indonesian migrants, were found washed ashore after their boat capsized in bad sea conditions.

The bodies of four men and nine women were discovered on a beach in southern Johor state by members of the public early on Tuesday, Rahmat Othman, the district police chief, said.

Authorities found an overturned wooden boat not far from the beach, which had probably capsized before dawn.

Rahmat said that the boat was believed to be carrying 30 to 35 people, most probably Indonesians trying to sneak into the country.

A search-and-rescue operation was under way but was hampered by high tides and choppy seas, he said.

Such tragedies are not uncommon in Malaysia. Many Indonesians are willing to risk their lives by travelling on boats believed to be old and unsafe to work in Malaysia illegally, or to return to their hometowns.

Eritrea now asks men to marry at least two wives or face imprisonment

Kenyans have received the news of mandatory polygamy by men in Eritrea with a mix of bewilderment and excitement.

Activists have posted a memo allegedly by the Government of Eritrea asking men to marry at least two wives due to acute shortage of men occasioned by casualties during the civil war with Ethiopia.

In the statement written in Arabic assures of government support to the polygamous marriages.

The activists translate it thus, “Based on the law of God in polygamy, and given the circumstances in which the country is experiencing in terms of men shortage, the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs has decided on the following .”

First that every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour.

“The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be punished to life imprisonment,” alleges the activists in their translation.

And Kenyans have reacted to these announcements with bemusement with some suggesting if they could change their citizenship immediately and take advantage of the new laws in the country.

“At this rate, I can see the Eritrea Government spreading new embassy outlets in Kakamega, Embu, Siaya and Busia counties to help hasten visa processing,” said one Kenyan on facebook.

“He is so so considerate of women! That’s good of him,” said another.

The Standard could not immediately authenticate the document nor the translation and it was not clear why the statement was not in the other two national languages, Tigrinya and Tigre.

The May 1998 to June 2000 Eritrean-Ethiopian war saw 150,000 soldiers killed from either sides but having a bigger impact on male population in the tiny Eritrea nation who were then just 4million people in total.
