Movie Review: ‘Rustom’ is a perfect crime drama that has hit the marquee after ages

August 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Rustom

Banner: Zee Studio, KriArj Entertainment, Cape Of Good Films & Plan C Studios
Producer: Neeraj Pandey, Aruna Bhatia,
Nittin Keni, Akash Chawla, Virender Arora,
Ishwar Kapoor & Shital Bhatia
Director: Tinu Suresh Desai
Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Ileana D’Cruz,
Esha Gupta, Arjan Bajwa, Pawan Malhotra, Usha Nadkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Kumud Mishra, Anang Desai, Parmeet Sethi, Kanwaljit Singh et al
Music: Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Ganguly, Raghav Sachar & Arko Pravo Mukherjee

Of late there is a strongest trend of making a biopic movie on legendary figures and also movies based on true stories of real people mirroring their down to earth real lives. And religiously following this trend is none other than the Producer – Actor team of Neeraj Pandey – Akshay Kumar. And their latest outing Rustom is based on the real life incident of a famed Naval Officer named K. M. Nanavati. And both Neeraj Pandey & Akshay Kumar deserve a standing ovation for brilliantly presenting or rather re – presenting the courtroom battle of K. M. Nanavati. Which had earlier appeared in the form of 2 movies namely Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke & Achanak. So once again Hats off to Neeraj Pandey & Akshay Kumar.

The scripted scenario of Rustom kick starts with a periodic era of 1959, when Mumbai was still “Bombay” and the times when justice was done by the jury members and not by the judge. This is followed by the introduction of the “habituated to his uniform” Commander Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar) and his lovely wife Cynthia Pavri (Ileana D’Cruz). One day, when Rustom Pavri comes back home from the sea, earlier than his scheduled date, he is shocked when he gets to know that his wife Cynthia has gone out with the “filthy” rich Vikram Makhija (Arjan Bajwa) and has not been home since the last 2 days. Rustom Pavri, then, starts breathing fire and reaches Vikram’s house, only to find Vikram & Cynthia together in an uncompromising situation. Unable to bear the sight of his wife’s deceit, Rustom Pavri loads his official gun and shoots the evil minded Vikram, killing him on the spot. Being the ever righteous man, Rustom Pavri then goes to the police station and surrenders himself. When the news of Vikram’s death reaches the ears of his “well connected” sister Preethi Makhija (Esha Gupta), she vows to revenge her brother’s death. As the case goes to the court however, Rustom pleads not guilty. What follows after that is a heated court room drama, mudslinging & the role of the media in the case… all eventually leading to one common thing.

Director Tinu Suresh Desai in his 1st ever outing in 1920 London had displayed his directorial sparks. But in his 2nd outing Rustom he is in complete command and displays that he is just not the flash in the pan kind of director. But of course he appears a little weak in the courtroom drama but that is because of the poor writing skills of Vipul K. Rawal. Yet Tinu Suresh Desai has given a new life to this predictable courtroom fare. Another weak link of the movie is its technical crew like the film’s music by Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Ganguly, Raghav Sachar & Arko Pravo Mukherje, cinematography by Santosh Thundiyil & editing by Shree Narayan Singh. So on the whole it is only Akshay Kumar’s sterling act that holds the film and the cine goers interest together especially of those who are totally unaware of the most talked about case of Nanavati.

Performance wise no doubt that it is Akshay Kumar who rules the roost. He has totally blended himself into the character of Nanavati and delivered a towering albeit a powerhouse performance. On the other hand Ileana D’Cruz is too perfect to be true, in fact she matches Akshay Kumar step by step in the histrionics department. Esha Gupta is excellent. Arjan Bajwa has delivered a par excellence act in his “Brief” role. While the other seasoned actors like Kumud Mishra, Usha Nadkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Anang Desai, Parmeet Sethi, Kanwaljit Singh & above all Pawan Malhotra too have ended up giving a convincing & believable performance.

Tail Piece: Rustom is a perfect crime drama that has hit the marquee after ages.

Rustom Can Easily Be Termed As The Milestone Movie Of My Career: Akshay Kumar

August 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

akshay kumar

Akshay Kumar is one of the most humble actor of Bollywood. He is so modest about his super stardom, that when he is addressed as a super star, his grin becomes wider and he just smiles. His rise to super stardom has been so phenomenal, en route all the highs & lows and ups & downs included. He has done films of varied genres albeit comedy is his forte. No doubt he has traversed miles & miles to finally prove his worth from his debut film Saugandh to his latest release Rustom.

What was the main reason for accepting Rustom?

First of all I found the concept interestingly gripping. But one never knows how the world will react to what I personally feel is intriguing & interesting.

Are you happy with the over all response to Rustom right from the promo launch?

So far the response has been mirrored to my own emotions and that is one of the greatest feelings an actor can experience, a shared passion about one’s choices of projects is just so humbling that it makes you want to hug all your fans and thank them for sharing their eagerness in your work.

While the trailer was released, you were away on a holiday. Do you regret missing out on the excitement for your film back home?

I would have regretted not being on holiday with my kids. I’ve made over 130 films, and luckily still counting. But I only get so many years to throw my kids in the pool and watch them marvel at the world before they become too big & too distant for me to impress.

But didn’t you feel cut off from the pre -release excitement back home?

Thanks to Steve Jobs & Mark Zuckerberg’s greatest inventions, they kept me connected to the world which made me feel like I was at home feeling the love & support as if I was only inches away from everyone’s excitement.

Rustom is your 1st ever film on a crime of passion… It’s about a loving husband who murders his wife’s lover. How difficult was it for you to portray this man who loves his country & his wife too but is accused of murder by the law?

It was so thrilling for me to portray such a character, one who has nothing but love & patriotism in his heart. But a crime is a crime… This film will leave you thinking twice about the legal system, the action of mankind and the ability to do the right thing at the right time.

The year has so far been extremely kind to you. Your reaction to Airlift & Housefull 3 being big hits?

You make it out like I wasn’t deserving enough to have a kind year. I personally couldn’t have wished for a better response to one of the most patriotic films I’ve ever made.

You mean Housefull 3?

I see my comedies have helped critics loosen up. But jokes aside, Airlift made me feel proud to be an Indian. As for Housefull 3, I love the fact that one of my favourite franchises can still bring so much laughter to the crowds, people let their hair down and let out whoops of laughter in the theatres. It’s the heartiest feeling in the world. What better feeling than to make people happy?

You have always preferred to work with a new director. Comment!

Yeah! You can say that I like to work with newer directors. Anyone who makes the grade with Neeraj Pandey is all good by me. Neeraj Pandey’s standards of film making and his script sense are irreproachable. So in Rustom Tinu Suresh Desai had my full faith from day one. I’ve not regretted my instincts for a second.

Isn’t it difficult for a new director to guide you?

Tinu Suresh Desai has pulled all of us together into one creative vision so fast & so well that I take my hat off to him. He’s a producer’s director and he doesn’t mess around for a moment. He would forget to say hello to you as he had to be so engrossed with his work. But his practicality always brings him back to reality. Speedy man, fast paced, exactly what I like in my directors when they know what they want and get it come hook or by crook, they get their shot.
What impels me is that they bring about a change in me. Keeping my audiences intrigued is a very important part in keeping them interested in my career. When I star opposite a fresh face, the audience has no idea what kind of connection we will have.

To round it off tell us something about your co – star Ileana?

What can I say about her? Ileana is a pleasure to work with of course. She has a competitive edge about her but laced with a charming exterior. She likes to push herself in her scenes and takes a demanding day on the chin. Rustom may not be a physically taxing movie but it was certainly emotionally draining for all of us.

Srikanth faces twice Olympic champ Lin Dan in quarters

August 16, 2016 by Nasheman

Srikanth

Rio de Janeiro: India’s shuttler Kidambi Srikanth will face an enormous task of beating two-time Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Lin Dan of China in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles event at the Rio Olympics here on Wednesday.

World No.11 Srikanth stunned World No.5 Jorgensen 21-19, 21-19 in 42 minutes at the pre-quarters stage. And the stakes will be high as Srikanth will aim to prove that he has really come of age.

At Rio, Srikanth has joined Parupalli Kashyap, who was the first Indian men’s singles player to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics at the London Games in 2012.

World No.3 Dan is considered as the most successful shuttler in history. The 32-year-old Chinese has completed the “Super Grand Slam”, having won all nine major titles in the badminton world: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Super Series Masters Finals, All England Open, Asian Games, and Asian Championships — becoming the first and only player to achieve this feat.

Many feel that Dan is past his prime but the left-hander remains the strong opponent that he used to be. Moreover, having the experience of wriggling out of crunch situations will be in his favour.

On the other hand, the 23-year-old Guntur lad has won 2014 China Open Superseries Premier after beating Dan 21-19, 21-17 in the final, thus becoming the first Indian male shuttler to win a Superseries Premier title.

It will be the fourth meeting between them with the Chinese dominating twice, but Srikanth had an upper hand at the last meeting at the 2014 China Masters.

On his way to the quarter-finals, the Indian topped Group H by registering easy wins against Munoz Lino of Mexico and Henri Hurskainen of Sweden, setting up a clash with Dane Jan O Jorgensen in the pre-quarters.

By virtue of his exceptional defensive skills, the Dane gave a tough time to Srikanth but it was the Indian who managed to clinch the well-fought battle with some body-line smashes.

After the pre-quarterfinals in the last two World Championships and the Asian Games, Srikanth has taken a good step forward, and it remains to be seen how well he tackles the extra attacking and rock solid defence of the God of badminton, Lin Dan.

Amnesty says its employees did not raise anti-India slogans

August 16, 2016 by Nasheman

amnesty-international

Bengaluru: Amnesty International’s India chapter today said none of its employee had shouted any anti-India slogan at an event on Kashmir in Bangaluru, allegations based on which sedition charges were slapped against the human rights body.

Amensty India said allegations mentioned in a complaint by an ABVP representative against it were “without substance” and that only discussion at the event on Saturday was about allegations of human rights violations and denial of justice in Jammu and Kashmir.

Local police had slapped sedition charges against Amnesty International India yesterday following allegations that anti-India slogans were raised at the event, organised by it, during a discussion on Kashmir issue.

“No Amnesty International India employee shouted any slogans at any point,” the human rights organisation said in a statement referring to allegations that “slogans were raised that Indian Kashmir should be part of Pakistan.”

To charges that the event indirectly supported terrorists, Amnesty said the only discussion that had taken place was about allegations of human rights violations and the denial of justice to families in Kashmir.

“These are issues that have regularly been discussed in the media. They have been written about at length by members of Parliament, politicians, judges and civil society,”it said.

The event was held as part of a campaign based on the report “Denied: Failures in accountability for human rights violations by security force personnel in Jammu and Kashmir”, published in July 2015, it said.
Amnesty said the report was based on in-depth research in Jammu and Kashmir, including interviews with family members of “victims”, RTI applications, examination of police and court records, and interviews with civil society groups, lawyers, and government officials.

The families of three Kashmiri victims that were interviewed for the report were invited to share their stories at the event, said Amnesty.

About allegations that some people at the event tried to assault ABVP activists, it said, “No Amnesty International India employee was involved in any form of assault.”

“Towards the end of the event, some of those who attended raised slogans, some of which referred to calls for ‘Azaadi’ (freedom). Amnesty International India as a matter of policy does not take any position in favour of or against demands for self-determination.

“However, Amnesty International India considers that the right to freedom of expression includes the right to peacefully advocate political solutions. Amnesty International India had invited the Bengaluru police to be present at the event in the interest of the security of the invited families and other attendees,” the statement said.

About allegations that Sindhujaa Iyengar, an Amnesty employee, and two others raised raised anti-national slogans, it said Iyengar was not present on stage at any point during the event.
Amnesty said footage of the event has been shared with the police.

The rights body said Amnesty has worked extensively on human rights violations in Pakistan, including “the enforced disappearances and unlawful killings of political activists in Balochistan, violations by security forces in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), and violence against journalists by groups including the ISI”.

Asked about reports that “anti-India” slogans were also raised by some students at the Sri Siddhartha Institute of Technology in Tumkuru, 70 km from here, with which the Home Minister is associated, Parameshwara said an FIR had been registered in that case also and police were investigating it.

“One security fellow says I don’t understand what they (students) said. We don’t know at this stage – it is not very clear. There (Tumkuru) also an FIR has been registered and they are looking into it,” he said.

Asked if any action has been suggested against the culprits, he said action would be taken as per the law.

“No, no, no. I will go according to law. Action will be taken according to results obtained from police investigation. Beyond that I don’t think I can do anything,” he said.

Asked whether the government had swung into action due to the central government’s pressure, Parameshwara denied such reports, saying the government has its own duty to fulfil.

“It is not like that. Why should the Centre force us to register a simple FIR?. I don’t think so. We have our own duty to fulfil. If there is any such case, naturally the law will take its own course and police definitely work under those laws,” he said.

Simha said there has been no FIR filed against Kashmiris who raised the slogans, but only against Amnesty International.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “Police are enquiring. An FIR has been registered.”
Noting that an FIR had already been registered on sedition charge, he said after an enquiry, police would take action according to law.

Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said patriotic and nationalist people could not tolerate “anti-India” slogans.

“What happened in JNU is being repeated here”, he said, adding, “this must be stopped.”
Yeddyurappa said BJP would fight to ensure that the culprits were brought to book and added that he had written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue.

Amnesty India today said none of its employees were involved in any form of assault against anyone at the event.

It said that towards the end of the event, some of those who attended raised slogans, some of which referred to calls for ‘Azaadi’ (freedom).

But, it said, Amnesty International India as a matter of policy does not take any position in favour of or against demands for self-determination.However, it considers that the right to freedom of expression includes the right to peacefully advocate political solutions.

Amnesty International India had invited Bengaluru police to be present at the event, in the interest of the security of the invited families and other attendees. “We have shared our footage of the event with the police,” it said.

4 killed as stone-pelting protestors clash with security forces

August 16, 2016 by Nasheman

Kashmir-firing

Srinagar: Four youth were killed and six others injured today in security forces action against stone-pelting protestors in Magam area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, taking the death toll in the ongoing unrest in the Valley to 64

A group of youth pelted stones at a CRPF vehicle at Aripathan in Magam area this morning, a police official said.

In the retaliatory action by the security forces, one youth was killed while seven others sustained injuries, the official said.

Condition of two of the injured is stated to be critical.

Meanwhile, curfew remained in force in entire Srinagar district and Anantnag town while restrictions were in place in the rest of the Valley as normal life remained paralysed for the 39th consecutive day.

The official said curfew and restrictions were imposed to thwart the plans of separatists to organise sit-in protest against the civilian killings at main market places of the Valley.

“Curfew remained in force in entire Srinagar district and Anantnag town in south Kashmir as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order,” the police official said.

Schools, colleges and private offices remained closed while public transport remained off the roads due to the strike called by the separatists. The attendance in government offices was thin.

Internet and mobile services across the Valley remained suspended.
While broadband services were snapped on Saturday evening, the mobile telephony was suspended late in the night on the same day.

Normal life has been affected due to protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces on July 8.

60 persons, including two cops, have been killed and several thousand others have been injured in the clashes that began on July 9.

Petrol to be cheaper by Rs 1/litre, diesel Rs 2

August 16, 2016 by Nasheman

petrol-price

New Delhi: Price of petrol was today cut by Rs 1 a litre and diesel by Rs 2 per litre, the fourth reduction in rates since July.

Petrol will now cost Rs 60.09 a litre in Delhi from midnight as compared to Rs 61.09 a litre currently, said Indian Oil Corp (IOC). The price of diesel will cost Rs 50.27 per litre as against Rs 52.27.

The price was last cut by Rs 1.42 a litre in case of petrol and by Rs 2.01 per litre for diesel on August 1.

“The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and rupee-dollar exchange rate warrant a decrease in selling price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision,” IOC said.

The movement of prices in the international oil market and rupee-USD exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes, IOC added.

Gujarat Dalits demand freedom from atrocities and discrimination

August 15, 2016 by Nasheman

dalits-una

Una: Vowing to intensify their agitation at a protest rally on Independence day, the Dalit community in Gujarat today said they will launch a mega rail roko stir if their demand for granting five acres of land for each family is not met by Gujarat government within one month.

As thousands of Dalits gathered in Una on the occasion of the country’s 70th Independence Day where Prime Minister Narendra Modi also came under fire, their leaders sought freedom from atrocities and discrimination, amid chants of “Jai Bhim”.

The tricolor was jointly unfurled by Radhika Vemula, mother of dalit scholar Rohith Vemula who had committed suicide in Hyderabad and Balu Sarvaiya, father of one of the victims of Una dalit flogging incident, in the presence of JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar.

The week-long rally which started from Ahmedabad by Una Dalit Atachiyar Ladat Samiti (UDALS), culminated in Una, the place where some dalits where brutally beaten by cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow last month sparking outrage.

“You take cow’s tail, give us land,” Jignesh Mavani, a lawyer-turned politician who established the UDALS and led the march, told the huge gathering.

“We have presented our demand before the state government. If you do not accept our demand of giving five acres land to each dalit family in next one month, we will launch a rail roko agitation,” Mevani said.

He also made those who were present there to take a pledge not to be in the business of skinning of cows.

Targeting Modi, Mevani said, “The sheer scale of protests had forced him to speak out on the issue. Modi did not speak a word when three youths were killed in police firing in Thangadh town in 2012, another incident of Dalit atrocity,” Kanhaiya said the hype of Gujarat Model of development has been punctured by dalits of the state.

“We want freedom from castesim. We will not tolerate any more atrocities on dalits anywhere in the country. Everybody has to come together to fight against such atrocities.”

Radhika Vemula in her address said, “I have not got justice for my son. He had to commit suicide just because he was dalit.

“But it is good to see that Dalit movement in Gujarat has forced the chief minister Anandiben Patel to resign. I have come here so that no other Dalit children face what my son had to suffer.”

Muslim community members came in large numbers to support the Dalit community in their campaign. Slogans like “Dalits-Muslims bhai bhai” were heard at the gathering.

As many as seven members of Dalit community from Mota Samadhiyala village in Una taluk in Gir Somnath district were on July 11 brutally assaulted by some self-styled cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow.

Usain Bolt wins 100m gold, Andre De Grasse gets bronze

August 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Jamaican icon 3-peats; Canadian sets personal-best time of 9.91 seconds

Usain-Bolt

by Benjamin Blum, CBC Sports

Usain Bolt completed a historic three-peat, winning gold in the 100-metre final Sunday in Rio. Canada’s Andre De Grasse captured bronze.

Bolt won the race in 9.81 seconds, followed by American Justin Gatlin at 9.89 and De Grasse at a personal-best 9.91.

De Grasse out-leaned Yohan Blake at the finish to reach the podium, edging the Jamaican by 2-100ths of a second.

“I’m feeling pretty good right now, I can’t complain,” De Grasse said after the race. “To be able to race against Usain and Gatlin, being a part of the same race as them and being a part of history today in Rio, it was a great feeling for me and I just have so much to learn from that race.”

De Grasse, from Markham, Ont., finished 1-100th of a second faster than the time he posted to win bronze at the 2015 world championships and equalled earlier Sunday in the 100 semifinals.

He is also the first Canadian male athlete to win a medal in Rio. Canada’s first 12 medals were won by women.

“I’m shaking,” Canadian 1996 Olympic champion Donovan Bailey told CBC Sports’ Scott Russell after the race. “This is great for track and field in Canada.”

Bolt enters Olympic pantheon

If there were any doubts, it took less than 10 seconds — 9.81, to be exact — for Bolt to erase them.

On a muggy Sunday night in Rio, the Jamaican superstar became the first person to capture three straight 100-metre titles at the Olympics.

The 6-foot-5 sprinter overcame his typically slow unfurling from the blocks, gradually worked up speed, caught American Justin Gatlin with 40 metres left and was celebrating — pointing at his chest with his thumb — before he crossed the finish line.

“Bolt just had that extra gear and I tried to go with him, it was tough but I know now I just need to work harder for next year and be more prepared,” De Grasse said.

“After having an up and down season with injuries this year,I can’t complain about the bronze medal. This is the best shape I’ve ever been in [and] I came away with a personal-best.”

As for the Olympic icon Bolt, he had nothing but praise for the Canadian medallist.

“He came through again,” Bolt said. “He’s going to be good, he runs just like me, I mean he’s really slow at the blocks but when he gets going, he gets going.”

“I think he can improve his start much better than me because he’s shorter so he will get better at the start if he works on a few things.”

The next one?

De Grasse’s Olympic debut comes on the heels of a changing of the guard in sprinting.

With Bolt and Gatlin’s futures uncertain, the Canadian’s bronze medal could be a golden opportunity going forward.

“We were just having some fun,” De Grasse said about his post-race encounter with Bolt. “Me and Usain met back in January, we did a lot of things together.”

“He feels like I’m the next one, and now I’m just trying to live up to it.”

De Grasse has plenty of confidence on the track, but credits his mother Beverley for pushing him to succeed.

“She’s everything,” De Grasse said. “Without her I don’t know even know if I would even be so motivated to do this sport.”

“I feel like I’m capable of doing it, my next Olympics I’m looking forward to it but as of now I’m just trying to get ready for my 200 and just sink it all in.

Barring Kashmir and Manipur, India celebrates Independence Day peacefully

August 15, 2016 by Nasheman

narendra-modi

New Delhi: India on Monday marked 70 years of its independence with peace and joy but the celebrations were marred by bombings in Manipur and a militant attack in Kashmir that killed a para-military officer.

As the nation immersed itself in patriotic fervour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and chief ministers across the state listed achievements of their governments in their Independence Day addresses watched by millions.

Many of the governments announced a string of measures for their people including a plan by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to hike minimum wages in Delhi by about 50 per cent.

The main function of the day was, as every year since Independence in 1947, held in Delhi where people in large numbers assembled in front of the historic Red Fort to listen to their Prime Minister on a windy morning.

Among other things in his more than 90-minute address to the nation, Modi urged Indians to fight social and religious divisions and make the country stronger.

“Every citizen should fight against the differences in the society on the basis of caste and class. We have to take everyone together, be it Dalits, tribals, oppressed and people from the financially weaker section,” he said.

Modi’s bete noire, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Prime Minister to implement his wage hike scheme throughout the country.

“Those who have less in life should have more in law. So we have decided to increase the minimum wages in Delhi by about 50 per cent,” Kejriwal told a packed Chhatrasal Stadium in the national capital.

In Delhi, amid terror threats, the authorities had thrown thick security cover in and around the city, including the area around the Red Fort.

Snipers were deployed and anti-aircraft guns installed around the historic fort, and much of Delhi was turned into a garrison town.

Security was also heightened in the restive Kashmir Valley. But militants still attacked paramilitary forces in an old city area and killed a senior Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer, police said. Two militants were also gunned down in the gunfight.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for peace in the Kashmir Valley which has been on the boil since July 8 killing of a rebel commander. It triggered widespread unrest that has left 56 people dead and thousands injured.

Srinagar wore a deserted look following a shutdown called by separatist leaders in the valley which has remained under curfew for much of the past five weeks.

In the northeastern state of Manipur, three security personnel and two girls were injured as two bombs exploded on deserted streets of Imphal amid a shutdown called by militants, officials and residents said.

In the neighbouring Mizoram, Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said the state “is the most peaceful in the country heading for a steady progress of development”.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar of Tripura, also in the northeast, lashed out at the central government for what he called its attempts to snatch all powers of the state governments and for trying to force the states to beg for aid.

In Mumbai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recalled the Indian Freedom Movement, services of the freedom fighters and sacrifices of the martyrs for India’s freedom from the British rule.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh announced a six per cent hike in dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees and pensioners from January 1 this year.

In Haryana, Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki felt giddy at the Independence Day parade due to hot and humid conditions after he unfurled the national flag.

Down south, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked the people to be watchful against fundamentalists and sought public support in the stand against subversive thoughts and activities.

In the Karnataka capital Bengaluru, patriotic fervour gripped the city as thousands of people, including women and children attired in colourful clothes, thronged celebrations for the Independence Day anniversary.

In Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said, “Freedom does not mean just the right to speak, write… True freedom rests in economic freedom.”

The Independence Day was also celebrated in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
