Chandrakant Singh’s Six X Shown At Recently Held Cannes film festival.

June 2, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Chandrakant Singh

Chandrakant Singh is a film maker who insists that he is perennial student who learns from life, from other people’s lives, from watching cinema and creates cinema through that experience. He avers, “As a film maker, I have observed there are some very poignant imbalances in interpersonal relationships between men & women based on social norms & perspectives and I try to present them in my films.”

He continues further, “Men & women are supposed to be equal partners, yet, when it comes to sex, women are looked down upon if they are open about their urges & desires. Why do men feel insecure with such women? Why does society expect women to curb their own sexuality. This is hypocrisy, both, at a personal level and within society that percolates across socio – economic levels and is apparently also immune to wealth & education. This is a subject that is a part of everyday life in almost every family across India, yet it is glossed over or ignored by most film makers. My film Six X takes a shot at it. It is being co – produced by Shadab Khan. My casting includes some of the top talent available within the Industry. Ashmit Patel, Sofia Hayat, Sweta Tiwari, Andria Dsouza, Anusmriti Sarkar, Rashmi Desai, Hrishita Bhatt & Zaid Shaikh are some of the cast. Some of my initial previews within the industry and outside including some non -Indian friends from varied parts of the World, elicited an almost universal refrain: they did not see this as an Indian problem alone but a World phenomena, even in the developed world.”

Chanderkant Singh rounded off the interview session with a conclusion, “Cannes is an international meeting place for film makers and talent from all across the world, a showplace for world cinema. World cinema, to me, is actually cinema that is at harmony with human emotions. Films like The Lunch Box and others have more than proved that ever so often. And that is why I was there. I was there for a bigger reason than selling my film. I was looking for co – producers, investors, actors for my next project and other projects that need global inputs at all levels in between, I showed my film Six X, saw other films and discovered a mutual meeting point for us all. That was why I was here at Cannes to present my film at the market and also to see a lot of films and their makers and hopefully discover points at which we can meet mutually.”

New Delhi: Tasked by markets regulator Sebi to sell land parcels of Sahara, HDFC Realty will e-auction on July 4 five properties owned by the beleaguered group at a reserve price of Rs 722 crore.

HDFC Realty has been asked to auction a total of 31 land parcels at Rs 2,400 crore, while SBI Cap has been tasked to auction another 30 land properties with an estimated market value of about Rs 4,100 crore.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) roped in HDFC Realty and SBI Cap after being asked by the Supreme Court to initiate the process of selling Sahara properties whose titles have been deposited with it by the group.

Following a go-ahead from the Court, the two entities have put in place a mechanism to auction these properties.

In a public notice issued today, HDFC Realty said it will e-auction as many as five land parcels on July 4 between 11 am and 12 pm. These properties will fetch around Rs 722 crore at reserve price.

These properties are located in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. The assets being sold include agricultural non-agri land.

Interested bidder can inspect these land parcels on June 10.

As per the court directions, these properties cannot be sold at less than 90 per cent of circle rates.

After spending two years in jail, Sahara chief Subrata Roy is currently out on parole. He was sent to jail on the orders of the Supreme Court in a long running dispute with Sebi.

Gulberg Society verdict: Only half justice delivered, says Ehsan Jafri’s wife

June 2, 2016 by Nasheman

Zakia Jafri

New Delhi: Expressing discontent at the special court verdict in the Gulberg Society case, Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the massacre, said that her fight wasn’t over as yet.

A special SIT court in Ahmedabad on Thursday convicted 24, including a VHP leader, in the 2002 post-Godhra Gulberg society massacre, which left 69 people including the former Congress MP dead. Thirty six others were acquitted.

Among those acquitted by special court Judge PB Desai was sitting BJP corporator Bipin Patel. The judge also dropped the conspiracy charge (120 B) against all the accused, saying there was no evidence of criminal conspiracy in the case.

Dismissing the verdict, Zakia said that she will appeal in higher courts. “This verdict is half justice to me,” she told Associated Press.

Of the 24 convicted on Thursday, 11 have been charged with murder, while 13 others have been convicted for lesser offences.

The quantum of sentence for those convicted in the case will be delivered on June 6.
The Supreme Court, which has been monitoring the case, had directed the SIT court to give its verdict by May 31.

Of the 66 accused, named by the SIT in the case, nine are already behind bars, while others are out on bail.

During the trial, the lawyer for the riots victims had argued that the massacre was a pre-planned criminal conspiracy hatched by the accused to kill minority community members residing in Gulberg Society.

The defence had refuted the conspiracy theory and claimed that the mob resorted to violence only after slain Congress MP Eshan Jafri fired several rounds at them.

The Gulberg Society massacre took place on February 28, 2002, during the 2002 Gujarat riots, when a mob attacked Gulberg Society, a lower middle-class Muslim neighbourhood in Chamanpura, Ahmedabad, a day after a coach of Sabarmati Express was burnt near Godhra railway station.

The Gulberg Society case is one of the nine cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots being probed by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT.

Siddaramaiah warns cops of action if they go for June four protest

June 1, 2016 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) in the state in a bid to subdue a proposed protest by the constabulary on June 4.

In a circular issued by the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Om Prakash, strict actions, including dismissal of the staff, will be taken against those who participate in the protest, reported Karnataka Everyday.

According to the report, the Health and Family Welfare Department has issued directions to all government hospitals for not issuing any medical certificates to police personnel on health grounds for 4 June.

Asserting that policemen face human rights violation on a daily basis, around 60,000 cops decided to take mass leave on 4 June. The protest was against meagre salary, overburdened with work and a lack of scholarship or educational facilities for their children.

Interestingly, the policemen are not entitled to go on a strike like other government employees, hence they have decided to apply for leave, en masse, instead.

Though, the protesting policemen have received support from the BJP and APP, with suggestions that the government revise their salaries, the Congress-led state government has taken a stern stance to subdue the protest.

False terror charges slapped on innocent Muslims, admits Sadananda Gowda

June 1, 2016 by Nasheman

D V Sadananda Gowda

Aligarh: For the first time a prominent BJP leader and a senior minister in Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the centre has admitted the fact that innocent Muslims were being framed in terror cases in India.

“Cases of arrest of Muslim youths on false terror charges are a matter of concern,” said DV Sadananda Gowda, the Union Minister for Law and Justice during his Aligarh visit for the ‘Vikas Parv’ celebrations to mark two years of Modi government.

The law minister said this when he was asked about rising instances of false terror charges against Muslim youths and the problems of rehabilitation they face after their acquittal.

Mr Gowda, who was once known for his provocative speeches against Muslims, especially in coastal Karnataka, said that legal reforms were in the pipeline to address such cases.

“The law commission is working on a report in this matter to bring about reforms in criminal procedure, bail, prosecution lapses, etc. A Supreme Court judge is the chairperson of a panel preparing the report, and there are other legal experts who are helping in preparing this report, and it is being worked upon,” he said.

Mr Gowda’s remarks on the thorny subject have come barely a week after home minister Rajnath Singh said that “the government has settled for a calibrated approach to terror investigations, advising police to adopt a more sophisticated approach, including de-radicalisation strategies, rather than necessarily prosecuting all suspects”.

Singh had then gone on to point out how the Delhi Police had recently released seven of the 10 suspects held for their alleged involvement in a Jaish-e-Mohammed terror plot. “You would have seen only three of the lot were arrested. We are working in a balanced manner. Earlier, all would be sent (to jail),” he had then said.

Slapped with untenable terror charges, many Muslim men have lost the prime years of their lives as they languished in jail. After their release they have found it difficult to adjust to a world that has changed in the interim, graduating from buses to metros, banks to ATMs, landlines to smartphones.

Recently, Nisaruddin Ahmad was acquitted in the Babri anniversary blast case after he spent 23 years in a Jaipur jail. There have been others too. Mohd Amir Khan was acquitted in 17 out of the 19 terrors charges he was fending off, but only after being incarcerated for 14 years. He had been charged with setting off 20 low-intensity bombs over 10 months during 1996-1997 in Delhi, Rohtak, Panipat and Ghaziabad. He told reporters on Tuesday: “The government has policies to rehabilitate surrendered terrorists, but nothing for those who are falsely charged.”

In the past, six Muslim men accused of being trained operatives of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islam (HUJI) were acquitted of the terror charges for lack of evidence by a special court in Lucknow. Five Muslim youths who were arrested in 2006 by the Mumbai police from different parts of the city on charges of terrorism were also acquitted this year. Gulzar Ahmad Bani, an alleged Hizbul Mujahideen operative who had been in jail from 2001 in a blast case in Agra, was set free for want of evidence by a local court.

The problem runs deep. A film based on legal activist Shahid Azmi, who himself faced false charges and after his release fought to defend those accused wrongly in cases of terrorism, poignantly points that out. Mufti Abdul Qayyum, who had spent 11 years in jail and was later acquitted by the Supreme Court in the Akshardham attack case, wrote a book, ‘Gyarah Saal Salakhon Ke Peeche’, narrating the stories of trumped up terror charges.

UNHCR: 2,500 refugees drowned on way to Europe in 2016

At least 2,510 refugees have died while making the perilous journey to Europe so far this year, the UN refugee agency said, with fears rising that many more will suffer the same fate.

According to UNHCR, the figure marks an increase of 25 percent from the same five-month period in 2015, when some 1,855 refugees drowned. In 2015, from January until the end of May, at least 57 people died en route to Europe.

“Thus far 2016 is proving to be particularly deadly,” William Spindler, a UNHCR spokesman, said. “This highlights the importance of rescue operations as part of the response to the movement of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean, and the need for real, safer alternatives for people needing international protection.”

The announcement follows the deadliest week of 2016 for refugees at sea.

Over the past week, a series of shipwrecks off the Libyan and Italian coasts killed at least 880 people. That number was included as part of the UNHCR announcement, and marked an increase on previous estimates of around 700 people.

“According to some, unconfirmed, accounts, the recent increase in numbers is linked to efforts by smugglers to maximise income before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, in the coming week,” Spindler said in a statement.

So far this year, at least 203,981 people have made the journey to Europe, which is a similar number to those who arrived in the continent last year in the same period.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) put the death toll from January to May at 2,443 people.

Both counts are regularly used by human rights organisations.

The IOM said most of those travelling to Italy were from Nigeria, Gambia, Senegal, Guinea and the Ivory Coast.

None of the deaths in May happened on the eastern Mediterranean route between Turkey and Greece, where arrivals have slowed to a trickle since the EU struck a deal with Ankara to curb the flow.

Analysis by the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said that during the week of May 23 to May 30, an average of five refugees drowned per hour as they tried to flee to Europe.
