Bangladesh post 41/1 at stumps, trail by 646 runs vs India on Day Two

Hyderabad: Bangladesh scored 41/1, trailing by 646 runs, at stumps on the second day of the one-off cricket Test against India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Friday.

Tamin Iqbal (24) and Mominul Haque (1) were at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day.

Bangladesh lost opener Soumya Sarkar (15) in the 12th over when the score was 38. Umesh Yadav took the wicket.

Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s record double hundred and Wriddhiman Saha’s second hundred (106 not out) enabled India declare their first innings at a mammoth total of 687-6 in the final session.

Bill supporting Kambala, Bull Cart Race proposed in Karnataka assembly session today

Bengaluru: A bill supporting Kambala has been proposed in Karnataka state legislative assembly session on Friday morning. According to the proposed bill, two rural sports events, Kambala and bull card race have been permitted to organise in the state with some rules and regulations under prevention of cruelty to animals act.

The both races will be exempted from the animal violence prevention act. The proposed bill has asked the the organisers of the events not to harm the animals while conducting either Kambala or bull cart race. Also, the bill has asked to ensure that domestic breeds have been utilised in the above said events. Culture, language of the land should be promoted while conducting Kambala and cart race.

Virat Kohli climbs ‘The Wall’, eclipses ‘The Don’

Hyderabad: Indian captain Virat Kohli continued his unbelievable record-breaking spree today and surpassed the legendary Sir Donald Bradman and Rahul Dravid by becoming the first batsman to score double hundreds in four successive Test series.

Kohli’s double tons came in the series against the West Indies, New Zealand, England and now Bangladesh, which is in India for a one-off Test.

Bradman and Dravid had achieved the feat in three successive series.

Kohli hit his maiden double hundred (200) at North Sound against the West Indies in July last year followed by 211 against New Zealand at Indore in October.

This was followed by his current career-best score of 235 against England in Mumbai in December and now 204 against Bangladesh.

While statistically Kohli had broken Bradman and Dravid’s record but a cursory look at ‘The Don’s’ statistics would tell that his numbers during that 1930-31 phase was phenomenal.

In the 1930 Ashes series in England between June and August, the then 22-year-old Bradman scored 254 at Lord’s, 334 (his career best) at the Leeds (Headingley) followed by 232 at the Oval — all in a single series.

In the following series against the West Indies in January 1931, Don hit 223 at Brisbane (the series was played in Australia). The next series that he played against South Africa (again Down Under), he hit 226 at Brisbane becoming the first batsman to score a double hundred in three successive series.

For Dravid, the hat-trick of double hundreds in successive series came in the 2003-04 season.

He scored 222 against New Zealand at Ahmedabad (October 2003) followed by 233 against Australia at Adelaide (December 2003). The hat-trick was accomplished with his career-best 270 against Pakistan in the very next series.

Attacks against minorities, Dalits grew sharply in BJP-led regime: US report

Washington: Religious tolerance has deteriorated and religious freedom violations have increased in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime, a report by an independent bipartisan American body has claimed.

The report, titled ‘Constitutional and Legal Challenges Faced by Religious Minorities in India’ and sponsored by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), said the religious minority communities and Dalits face discrimination and persecution in India where hate crimes, social boycotts and forced conversion have escalated dramatically since 2014.

“Under Congress Party and BJP-led governments, religious minority communities and Dalits, both have faced discrimination and persecution due to a combination of overly broad or ill-defined laws, an inefficient criminal justice system, and a lack of jurisprudential consistency. In particular, since 2014, hate crimes, social boycotts, assaults, and forced conversion have escalated dramatically,” said the report.

“Since the BJP assumed power, religious minority communities have been subject to derogatory comments by BJP politicians and numerous violent attacks and forced conversions by affiliated Hindu nationalist groups such as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Sangh Parivar, and Vishva Hindu Parishad,” it said.

The USCIRF-sponsored report is written by Iqtidat Karamat Cheema, who is director for UK-based Institute for Leadership and Community Development. The report further says there are constitutional provisions and state and national laws in India that do not comply with international standards of freedom of religion or belief, including Article 18 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The report suggested that the US government should put religious freedom and human rights at the heart of all trade, aid and diplomatic interactions with India.

“India is a religiously diverse and democratic society with a Constitution that provides legal equality for its citizens irrespective of their religion and prohibits religion-based discrimination,” said USCIRF chair Thomas J. Reese.

“However, the reality is far different… India’s pluralistic tradition faces serious challenges in a number of its states.”

“During the past few years, religious tolerance has deteriorated and religious freedom violations have increased in some areas of India. To reverse this negative trajectory, the Indian and state governments must align theirs laws with both the country’s constitutional commitments and international human rights standards,” he said.

The report stated that India faces serious challenges to both its pluralistic traditions and its religious minorities. “Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and Jains generally are fearful of what the future portends. Dalits also are increasingly being attacked and harassed”.

“The Indian government-at both the national and state levels-often ignores its constitutional commitments to protect the rights of religious minorities. National and state laws are used to violate the religious freedom of minority communities; however, very little is known about the laws,” it said.

It stated that the states of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan tend to have the greatest number of incidents of religiously-motivated attacks and communal violence, as well as the largest religious minority populations.

Quoting India’s Home Ministry figures, it said that in 2015, India experienced a 17% increase in communal violence, when compared to the previous year. In 2015, there were 751 reported incidents of communal violence, up from 644 in 2014.

The report recommended the US government to urge the Indian government to push its states that have adopted anti-conversion laws to repeal or amend them to conform to international norms.

It further urged the Indian government to immediately lift its sanctions against non-governmental organisations working for the welfare of the minorities in India.

“Identify Hindutva groups that raise funds from US citizens and support hate campaigns in India. Such groups should be banned from operating in the United States if they are found to spread hatred against religious minorities in India,” it said.

The report further stated that Indian government should reform the anti-conversion laws and appreciate that “both conversion and reconversion by use of force, fraud, or allurement are equally bad and infringe upon a person’s freedom of conscience”.

It said that India should not impose Hindu personal status laws on Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, but instead provide them with a provision of personal status laws as per their distinct religious beliefs and practices.

It recommended that India adopt the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

“Operationalise the term ‘minority’ in its federal laws and comply with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities.

“Drop Explanation II in Article 25 of its constitution and recognize Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism as distinct religions with their own separate religious identities.

Lastly, it said that India should also not impose Hindu personal status laws on Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, but instead provide them with a provision of personal status laws as per their distinct religious beliefs and practices.

DILJIT TO STAR IN EKTA’S PUNJABI DEBUT PRODUCTION

It seems like Punjabi films are the next big destination for movie Bollywood bigwigs. In the recent past, not just film studios but big names such as Akshay Kumar & Priyanka Chopra have also ventured into Punjabi film production. Now, we have learnt that producer Ekta Kapoor is the next in line. The UDTA PUNJAb actor, Diljit Dosanjh, is supposed to star in the project, which will be directed by National award – winning director Anurag Singh. Interestingly, Anurag & Diljit have already worked together on films such as the Jatt & Juliet series & PUNJAB 1984 (2014). While Ekta couldn’t be reached for a comment, Diljit says, “It’s been my long cherished dream to give Punjabi audiences their own super hero. PRAKASH PANGE NO MORE

Prakash Pange, who had worked in Trade Guide from the early 70’s till the 90’s and later in Box Office expired on 1st Feb, 2017 after a brief illness. Prakash Pange had also joined Manmohan Desai’s camp as the PRO and was the line producer in films like NASEEB, ALLAHRAKHA, DESH PREMEE, TOOFAN, YEH HAI JALWA, Romu Sippy’s ANDAR BAHAR, Dharma Productions, F. C. Mehra, Pramod Chakravorty, David Dhawan, Smita Thakarey etc. He was busy completing the shooting of SHAKAAL for a Pune based producer. Extremely affectionate, endearing & helpful in nature, Prakash used to make friends easily and was extremely witty and a warm hearted person. He was only 62 and is survived by his 2 sons, daughter – in – laws, grandsons & granddaughters. I pray God to let his soul rest in peace.

5 Year Old Prachiti Shines

India requests UK High Commission for Vijay Mallya’s extradition

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday informed that India has on Wednesday handed over the request for extradition of embattled business tycoon Vijay Mallya received from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to the United Kingdom High Commission.

“We have today handed over the request for extradition of Vijay Mallya as received from the CBI to the UK High Commission in New Delhi,” MEA official spokesperson Vikas Swarup told the media.

Mallya left for the UK last year after facing heat for defaulting on loans worth Rs 9,000 crore.

Under the laws of extradition, a host country is expected to ship back a man wanted for a crime in his own country.

The Centre has signalled its intention to frame a law that stops loan defaulters from fleeing the country and another to seize the assets they leave behind.

Mallya — who has called his stay in the UK since last April a “forced exile” — has denied the charges against him.

The CBI last month filed charges against Mallya, his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines and nine other executives and bankers, alleging he dishonestly induced the delivery of property and illegally obtained pecuniary advantage — charges that can carry a sentence of up to seven years in prison.

In April last year, the Indian government cancelled Mallya’s passport but despite a warrant for his arrest the UK turned down a request to deport him on the grounds that he had entered Britain with a valid passport.

Congress govts developed India; Modi not accepting his blunders: Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena today hailed the development works done by successive Congress governments at the Centre and again targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he is not ready to admit the “chaos” created by the note ban exercise.

 

About Modi’s “raincoat” remark against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, it said being in power with the corrupt is also corruption. But for the work done by the Congress governments, Modi would be governing a backward nation in Africa, an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said.

“Modi is not ready to accept the chaos demonetisation has caused. His personal advertisement machinery tries to hide every wrong policy of his government and leaves no stone unturned to attack the Congress. Modi should come out of this negative perception now,” it said.

“Even if one believes the Congress governed while indulging in corruption, it transformed the nation, which could not even produce a needle during Independence, to one that is at the forefront of economic and industrial development. The previous rulers have made India what it is today,” it said.

Referring to Modi’s “raincoat” remark, it said being in power with the corrupt is also corruption. Therefore, even if one wears a raincoat and bathes, the body is bound to get wet.

“Today, if you do not believe with closed eyes that the previous government only indulged in corruption, you will be termed as an anti-national and killed,” the ruling alliance partner said sarcastically.

Referring to Indira Gandhi, the Sena said the former Prime Minister taught Pakistan a lesson in the 1971 war, never displayed a hypocritical stand on anti-nationals, did not trouble the poor by demonetising currency notes and was thus nicknamed ‘Durga’ by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

“Her strong will was the nation’s shield. She nationalised banks, made better the nation’s economy, gunned down Khalistani terrorists and gave the message that India will not bend before terrorists. She sacrificed her life for the nation,” it said.

Eulogising Rajiv Gandhi, the Sena said, “He had the will to govern by clean means. He may have got the taint of Bofors, but he has to be credited with bringing computers to India. The development of technology today is only because he laid a strong foundation.”

“Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh were successful in saving the nation from economic imbalance. Had all this not happened in the last 60 years, Modi would today be governing a nation like Somalia or Burundi,” it said.
