Over the past few days Tropical Cyclone Carlos has been gaining strength in the southern Indian Ocean. The tiny Islands of Mauritius and La Reunion have been dealt a glancing blow by the storm.

Carlos has already brought flooding rains to Mauritius. Just two days ago Vacoas reported 116mm of rain in 24 hours. Meanwhile Plaisance had 117mm in the same period.

This is the rainy season in Mauritius with February and March being the wettest months, and as is often the case when the rains come, the mountainous interior has suffered mudslides and flash flooding.

The centre of the system is currently located around 200km to the west of La Reunion. Here the administrative capital, Saint-Denis recorded 126mm of rain on Tuesday. That’s more than 80 per cent of the February average of 153mm.

Carlos is currently packing winds of 90 gusting 120 kilometres per hour. It is expected to strengthen further in the warm open waters of the Southern Indian Ocean.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expect the storm to reach maximum intensity on Wednesday with sustained winds of 130km/h and gusts nearer 160km/h.

That would make it equivalent to a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It is then expected to stay to the east of Madagascar and weaken quickly as it moves into cooler waters.

Sasikala has no right to remove me from party: Panneerselvam

February 8, 2017 by Nasheman

panneerselvam

Chennai: Soon after being removed from the post of AIADMK treasurer by party General Secretary VK Sasikala, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said none had the right to do so and rubbished her claims that DMK was behind his moves.

He said his next course of action would “reflect” the “aspirations” of AIADMK cadres and people of Tamil Nadu.

“No one has the right to remove me from the post of treasurer which was given to me by Amma 10 years ago,” he told reporters.

Panneerselvam said he had discharged his duties as party treasurer to the satisfaction of Jayalalithaa. “I have the fulfilment that I have done my job as treasurer fully to the satisfaction of Amma.”

Panneerselvam dismissed AIADMK General Secretary Sasikala’s charge that DMK was behind his revolt against the party leadership and said she has no powers to sack him as Treasurer.

“She should be asked to explain the basis of her charge. I was never cordial with DMK. A look back into the history will make it clear,” he told Tamil TV channels after his last night’s sudden revolt.

As the political drama unfolded, security at the Greenways Road residence of Panneerselvam was stepped up even as scores of supporters started thronging the area.

AIADMK MLAs, meanwhile, are meeting at the party headquarters to discuss the situation arising out of Panneerselvam’s outburst.

“There is no relationship at all between me and the DMK. Its only the human approach to reciprocate when someone smiles at you. That is the difference between animals and humans,” Panneerselvam said.

He was apparently referring to Sasikala last night pointing to the exchange of pleasantries between him and DMK Working President M K Stalin, the Leader of the opposition in the Assembly, during the recent session.

He also stuck to his charge that he was forced to resign from the post of Chief Minister, but declined to answer a question whether he would stake claim with the Governor to continue, saying “Just wait and watch.”

“I don’t want to go into it. I had already explained in detail at Amma’s (Jayalalithaa) memorial the circumstances under which I was forced to resign,” he said.

Elaborating on his contention that Sasikala had no powers to sack him from the party post, Panneerselvam said already there were legal problems facing the party.

He said General Secretary was elected on a temporary basis in view of the extraordinary situation faced by the party (after Jayalalithaa’s demise).

“This is the party’s norm. As per the party’s constitution framed by founder M G Ramachandran at the time floating the AIADMK, legal sanction for the post will come only when all primary members elect the General Secretary. Such a General Secretary alone has the powers to appoint or remove party functionaries,” he said.

On strong attack against him by AIADMK leaders, including his cabinet colleagues, Panneerselvam said it was a ‘compulsion of time.’

“They can only speak like that when they are there (with Sasikala). They are in a state of mind of retaining their office for the next four years. They should act keeping in mind that they have to go back to the people,” he said.

On the charge that he had betrayed the party high command, the senior leader said he resigned when he was forced only because he did not want the charge to fall on him.

Asked about allegations levelled against him by some of his opponents that BJP was behind him, Pannerselvam said, “They (his opponent) don’t have any strong ground against me. They can’t level any allegation against me.”

Asked if he would launch a new party and if he would call on Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, he said “please wait and see.”

Hardik Patel will be face of Shiv Sena in Gujarat polls, says Uddhav Thackarey

February 7, 2017 by Nasheman

Hardik Patel

Mumbai: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday hinted that Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel would be the party’s face in Gujarat, ANI reported. The leaders were addressing a joint press conference in Mumbai. The meeting follows the conclusion of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiva Sena’s alliance in Mumbai.

Thackeray said, “Why can’t he [Patel] be Shiv Sena’s face for the polls? But nothing has been decided or discussed yet. This was just our first meeting and everything cannot be discussed in one meeting”.

Patel said he was a “big fan” of the party’s founder, Bal Thackeray, and praised the Shiva Sena. He has been a harsh critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led government.

Patel, who has led agitations across the state demanding reservations for the community since 2015, was arrested for sedition and spent nine months in jail. The 23-year-old Patidar leader was granted bail in a sedition case in July 2016, but the Gujarat High Court had stipulated that he stay outside the state for six months, starting July 17. He stayed in Udaipur till January 17.

The Shiv Sena’s publication Saamna had published editorials praising Patel as a leader of “supplanting Modi as a crowd-puller”. The state is scheduled to conduct elections in 182 constituencies later this year.

US government asks court to reinstate Trump travel ban

February 7, 2017 by Nasheman

Justice department files brief with federal appeals court in support of President Donald Trump’s travel and refugee ban.

Donald Trump Muslims

by Al Jazeera

The US government has lodged papers with a federal appeals court against the suspension of President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban.

The document, which argues that barring immigrants from seven mainly Muslim countries is a lawful exercise of the president’s authority, was filed on Monday with the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The move by the justice department comes after an appeals court over the weekend denied the Trump administration’s request to immediately set aside a Seattle judge’s ruling that put a hold on the ban nationwide.

The federal appeals court asked lawyers for the states of Washington and Minnesota, which are legally challenging Trump’s order, and the justice department to argue at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday whether the ban should remain shelved.

“What will be argued in court is a very narrow legal interpretation, which is, does the president have the right to issue executive orders which can stop people coming into the country,” Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher, reporting from Washington, DC, said.

Washington state and Minnesota sued Trump last week, saying that the ban harmed residents and effectively mandated discrimination.

The justice department says that the issue is a matter of national security and Trump’s executive order was well within his authority.

“The noise that is coming out of the White House in the last few hours is that they believe they are on very solid ground and that the executive order will soon be resumed,” Al Jazeera’s Fisher said.

Earlier on Monday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the Trump administration was confident it will prevail in the lawsuit.

“Clearly, the law is on the president’s side,” Spicer told reporters on Air Force One.

“He has broad discretion to do what’s in the nation’s best interest to protect our people, and we feel very confident that we will prevail in this matter,” he added.

‘Significant harm’

The restrictions on all refugees and travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen went into effect on January 27, causing chaos at airports across the US and leaving travellers trying to reach the country in limbo. Refugees from Syria were blocked indefinitely.

The political backlash for Trump has been equally severe, with the order prompting numerous mass protests.

Top technology giants, including Apple, Google and Microsoft banded together with nearly 100 companies on Sunday to file a legal brief opposing Trump’s immigration ban, arguing that it “inflicts significant harm on American business”.

Noting that “immigrants or their children founded more than 200 of the companies on the Fortune 500 list”, the brief said Trump’s order “represents a significant departure from the principles of fairness and predictability that have governed the immigration system of the United States for more than 50 years”.

The controversial executive order also “inflicts significant harm on American business, innovation, and growth as a result,” the brief added.

Trump, who – during his campaign – called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US, has repeatedly vowed to reinstate the ban.

One sunny Sunday morning the spokesperson of Parth Films International & media coordinator Raju Kariya escorted a chosen few media persons to Surve Farm, Panvel to witness the muhurat & marathon shooting coverage of Parth Films International’s maiden venture titled Krina. Debutante Parth Chauhan enacts the title role of a mini super hero in Krina who tries to solve the problems of a misunderstood clash of titans between the 2 heads of adivasi (tribal) villages.

Present on the location was Parth Chauhan along with veteran actors Inder Kumar, Shahbaaz Khan, producer Harvinder Singh Chauhan, director Mukesh Kumar and music composer Dilip Sen. The muhurat shot was performed on Parth Chauhan and the auspicious muhurat clap was given by veteran music composer Dilip Sen.

On this occasion we had an interaction, moderated by Pro Raju Kariya, with producer Harvinder Singh Chauhan, director Mukesh Kumar, Parth Chauhan, Inder Kumar & Shahbaaz Khan and here is what they had to say about Krina.

Producer Harvinder Singh Chauhan: “I am a simple businessman and never thought of entering the film industry but when my director Mukesh Kumar came to me with his proposal of directing a film I started thinking about it, but still I took almost a year to agree mainly to see how serious Mukesh is. Finally I gave him the green signal and he came up with half a dozen subjects from which I selected to make an interesting subject like Krina. The next thing I knew was that Mukesh wanted my son Parth Chauhan to enact the title role of Krina. I agreed only after Mukesh personally trained Parth for almost 6 months and prepared him totally to face the camera and also to do total justice to the role and that too with absolute perfection.”

Director Mukesh Kumar: “I have been around in the film industry for a long time now having assisted many small screen & big screen directors. I was on the look out for an independant directorial venture. And finally I succeeded after a long time in convincing Harvinderji to launch Krina under his own home production banner Parth Films International. And I selected Parth to enact the tittle role because I saw the potential in him and besides I also personally trained him so that he can enact the role of a mini super hero named Krina effortlessly. As for the subject matter of Krina, we do not wish to reveal much at this stage. Suffice it to say that Krina is the story of a misunderstood clash of titans between the 2 heads of an adivasi (tribal) village. And how Krina (Parth Chauhan) tries to solve the issue at hand after donning the mantle of a super hero. The 30 days marathon shooting stint begins from today and Krina will not only be shot at Surve Farm, Panvel but also in Filmcity, Mumbai besides varied other locales of Shimla & Kulu Manali.”

Parth Chauhan: “I believe that Krina, in which I enact the title role, is a really good break for a debutante actor like me. Besides Krina also happens to be on of the names of Lord Krishna. That apart the entire credit goes to my director Mukeshji, for selecting me for this main role, for laying his trust in me and also for training me with utmost perfection to enact the role of a mini super hero Krina.”

Inder Kumar: “In Krina I enact the role of an antagonist who is the head of an adivasi village and is having a fight against the head of another adivasi village. Uptill now I had played the leading roles in all the movies I had done, but now enacting this antagonist role be a different experience altogether for me.”

Shahbaaz Khan: “I have this negative image in the film industry, having enacted mostly a bad person’s roles in films & television. But in Krina I am playing the role of a protagonist who is the head of a tribal village and one who is always with mini super hero Krina since he decides to solve the conflicting issues between the 2 village heads. I really loved the role narrated to me by my director Mukesh Kumar.”

Music Composer Dilip Sen: “Krina has an altogether different kind of music. I have finished recording all the songs. In fact Krina’s music has different shades of songs catering to a wider spectrum of music lovers. And amongst all the numbers, the title song will be the major highlight of Krina. In fact you can also say that music will be one of the main USP of Krina.”

Krina also stars Deep Sikha, Sudesh Berry, Sudha Chandran & many others. While the other credits of Krina are creative direction by Shyamal K. Mishra, cinematography Gauda, action by R. P. Yadav, lyrics by Bhushan Singh & Shyamal K. Mishra, art by Sanjay Sonavane, choreography by Muneesh Kalyan, production designing by Naresh Thakur & Ravinder Bundela, music by Dilip Sen & media co – ordination by Raju Kariya.

Syria hanged 13,000 in Saydnaya prison: Amnesty

Syrian government executed thousands of prisoners in mass hangings at Saydnaya prison, says rights watchdog.

by Al Jazeera

As many as 13,000 people were hanged in five years at a notorious Syrian prison near Damascus, Amnesty International has said, accusing the government of a “policy of extermination”.

Titled “Human Slaughterhouse: Mass hanging and extermination at Saydnaya prison,” Amnesty’s damning report, released on Tuesday, is based on interviews with 84 witnesses, including guards, detainees, and judges.

It found that at least once a week between 2011 and 2015, groups of up to 50 people were taken out of their prison cells for arbitrary trials, beaten, then hanged “in the middle of the night and in total secrecy.”

The report said: “Throughout this process, they remain blindfolded. They do not know when or how they will die until the noose was placed around their necks.”

Most of the victims were civilians believed to be opposed to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

“They kept them [hanging] there for 10 to 15 minutes,” a former judge who witnessed the executions said.

“For the young ones, their weight wouldn’t kill them. The officers’ assistants would pull them down and break their necks,” he said.

Amnesty said the practice amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and were probaby still taking place.

Thousands of prisoners are held in the military-run Saydnaya prison, one of the country’s largest detention centres located 30km north of Damascus.

Amnesty accused the Syrian government of carrying out a “policy of extermination”, repeatedly torturing detainees and withholding food, water, and medical care.

Prisoners were also raped or forced to rape each other, and guards would feed detainees by tossing meals on to the cell floor, which was often covered in dirt and blood, the report said.

‘Hidden, monstrous campaign’

A twisted set of “special rules” governed the facility: detainees were not allowed to speak and must assume certain positions when guards entered their cells.

“Every day there would be two or three dead people in our wing … I remember the guard would ask how many we had. He would say, ‘Room No 1 – how many? Room No 2 – how many?’ and on and on,” said Nader, a former detainee whose name has been changed.

After one fierce day of beating, Nader said, 13 people died in a single wing of the prison.

One former military officer said he could hear “gurgling” as people were hanged in an execution room below.

“If you put your ears on the floor, you could hear the sound of a kind of gurgling,” said Hamid, who was arrested in 2011.

“We were sleeping on top of the sound of people choking to death. This was normal for me then,” he told Amnesty.

According to the report, the bodies were taken away by the truckload to be secretly buried in mass graves. Their families were given no information about their fate.

Amnesty has previously said that more than 17,700 people were estimated to have died in government custody across Syria since the country’s conflict erupted in 2011.

The figure of 13,000 deaths in a single prison, therefore, is a marked increase.

“The horrors depicted in this report reveal a hidden, monstrous campaign, authorised at the highest levels of the Syrian government, aimed at crushing any form of dissent within the Syrian population,” said Lynn Maalouf, deputy director for research at Amnesty’s Beirut office.

“The cold-blooded killing of thousands of defenceless prisoners, along with the carefully crafted and systematic programmes of psychological and physical torture that are in place inside Saydnaya prison cannot be allowed to continue,” she said.

An investigation by the United Nations last year accused Assad’s government of a policy of “extermination” in its jails.

The UN estimates that more than 400,000 people have been killed and millions have fled their homes since the conflict began with anti-Assad protests.

‘Jolly LLB 2’ can be screened only after 4 shots are cut: HC

February 7, 2017 by Nasheman

jolly llb 2

Aurangabad: The Bombay High Court ruled that Akshay Kumar-starrer “Jolly LLB 2” can be screened only after four controversial shots in the movie are removed.

Justices S S Shinde and K K Sonawane of a bench here passed the order after going through a report presented by a committee headed by Justice Prakash Kanade and two others after watching the movie.

Advocate Ajay Kumar Waghmare had filed a petition before the bench here and demanded removal of the word ‘LLB’ from the film and cut certain shots which portrayed lawyers in bad light.

Following the decision, a fresh certificate would be issued to the film by the CBFC.

Waghmare through his lawyer Pandit Anerao had contended that whatever is shown in the trailer of the film or released on social media seems to be an attempt to “mock” at the existing judicial system of India.

He argued that this may lower the dignity of the professionals practicing law.

The Supreme Court had on February 3 kept the plea, filed by the film producer, pending and asked them to go to the Bombay High Court for relief.
