Chennai: Seeking to clear the air on the health of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa when she was rushed to the Apollo Hospitals here on September 22 last year, the British doctor who treated her asserted that she was conscious while being brought in an ambulance from her home.

The late Chief Minister was on and off ventilator and often also interacted after being admitted for fever and dehydration, Richard Beale told a news conference here. Beale was flanked by P Balaji of Madras Medical College and K Babu of Apollo Hospitals, who had signed in election forms on which her thumb impression was taken.

This was for nominating AIADMK candidates for elections to two seats and bypoll to one segment last year. Beale clarified that it was possible for sepsis, the body’s response to infection, to spread fast and damage other organs though Jayalalithaa showed signs of recovery during her 75-day stay at the Apollo Hospitals here.

On the day she was admitted “she became short of breath at home and very short of breath when the ambulance brought her to the hospital…there was an infection resulting in damage to organs and contributing to shortness of breath”.

He said at that time “it was not clear” what the source of infection was “but subsequent tests showed there was indeed infection in her blood”. “So bacteria were going from the blood and that was where the infection was identified and resulted in her general poor condition,” he said. It was known that Jayalalithaa was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, he said.

Movie Review: Alif is a very interesting, meaningful and thought provoking film

February 3, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

ALIF - LADNA NAHi PADNA ZAROORI HAI

Banner: AB Infosoft & Jalsa Picture Pictures
Producers: Pawan Tiwari & Zaigham Imam
Director: Zaigham Imam
Star Cast: Neelima Azeem, Danish Hussain Bhavna Pani, Pawan Tiwari, Aditya Om, Master Saud Mansuri, Shimala Prasad, Gauri Shanker, Ishaan & Aditya Om
Music: Aman Pant

Raza (Danish Hussein) is heartbroken as his Sister Zahra (Neelima Azim) has still not forgiven him for forcing her to be the 4th wife of a Pakistani person and sent off too Pakistan to escape the wrath of the Hindu – Muslim riots. Years later she returns on a 3 months visa. Raza’s son Ali (Master Saud Mansuri) is studying in a Madrasa (a Muslim religious school imparting the teachings of Quran). But Ali’s Aunt Zahra wants him to study in a convent school and become a doctor. Then begins Raza’s conflict between the orthodox seminary education & convent education including his fellow neighbours.

Director Zaigham Imam has made a very poignant film Alif, which deals with the importance of modern education. The narrator of the film Alif is veteran actress Jaya Bachchan. But the film sounds a bit outdated as today’s modern Muslim family’s leanings is more towards convent education along side seminary education, but that is not being orthodox as it is equally important. The film’s tagline “Ladna Nahin Padna hai” is apt. Credit should also go to Pawan Tiwari for making a good film like Alif in lieu with Zaigham Imam.

Performance wise Neelima Azim as Zahra, Danish Hussain as Raza and Master Saud Mansuri are brilliant. While the rest of the actors like Aditya Om, Bhavna Pani, Pawan Tiwari, Shimala Prasad, Gauri Shanker & Ishaan too are good and help in carrying the film’s narration forward.

No doubt Alif is a good film but its prospects at the Box office turnstiles are bleak but may pick up with proper word of mouth publicity and more aggressive promotions. All said and done Alif is more of a festival circuit film where it will garner more critical apprecian and awards galore.

Post-Godhra riots case: 28 accused acquitted by Kalol court

February 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Godhra

Ahmedabad: All 28 accused in a post-Godhra riots case have been acquitted by a Gandhinagar court which cited lack of substantial evidence against them.

Those who have been acquitted by the court include present chairman of the Kalol Nagrik Sahkari Bank, Govind Patel. All the accused were already on bail since long.

The 28 persons were accused of arson, rioting and damaging property of minority community at Paliyad village in Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district on February 28, 2002, a day after the train burning incident at Godhra railway station.

Apart from damaging property, they were also accused of damaging some portion of a dargah in Paliyad during an attack by a mob of around 250 locals of that village, including the 28 accused named by police in their FIR.

While pronouncing the judgement on January 31, Additional District Judge in Kalol, B D Patel, noted that not enough evidence against the accused is available as all the the witnesses turned hostile by claiming that they were unable to identify the accused, who were part of a mob.

In addition, these witnesses told the court that they are not having any grudge against anyone at present as they have already struck a compromise with the accused.

During the previous arguments, defence lawyer Bhavesh Raval informed the court that the accused have already paid for the damages incurred by the minority community under the compromise formula to establish harmony.

About 58 persons lost their lives when the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was torched at Godhra Railway Station on February 27, 2002.

The incident had triggered large scale riots in Gujarat in which around 1,000 people, mostly of minority community, were killed.

MPs demand probe into the way E Ahamed’s death was handled

February 3, 2017 by Nasheman

E Ahamed

New Delhi: A senior opposition member in Rajya Sabha today sought a probe into the manner in which the death of former Union Minister E Ahamed was “handled”, alleging he had died soon after being rushed to the hospital but his demise was announced much later.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) said there were varied allegations and various information that “I have got that some doctors say he was declared dead when he was taken to the hospital”.

Some say Ahamed died subsequently in the ICU, Yechury said, adding that later the IUML leader was shifted to the trauma centre as there were better facilities there.

“I want a proper and thorough investigation in the manner in which the death of one of our senior colleagues of Parliament and a former Cabinet Minister E Ahamed was handled and the way in which the news of his death was sought to be suppressed,” he said.

The 78-year old Indian Union Muslim League leader died at RML hospital where he was admitted on January 31 and put on artificial life support.

“There has been interference, that’s what I hear, from the highest authorities in the country, from the PMO, and this is something which cannot be accepted.

“This is shameful…I want this issue to be thoroughly investigated. I wish my information is not correct, what I heard. But if it is correct, then they must be made acountable and action must be taken against those who have behaved in this manner,” Yechury said.

He further said that other senior leaders were not allowed to see Ahamed in the hosptial and even his own children were not allowed to see him initially.

The CPI(M) leader also argued that a person cannot be put on life support without the permission of the nearest relative and wanted to know “how and why was the announcement of his death delayed”.

In the Lok Sabha when some Opposition members, particularly those from Kerala, raised the matter around 1300 hours, there was a heated exchange between TMC MP Saugata Roy and some BJP members, forcing Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the House for the day.

Along with other factors like religion, caste system, social prestige and compensation principle, the chapter cites “ugliness” as a reason for the grooms’ families to demand more dowry.

“If a girl is ugly and handicapped, then it becomes very difficult for her to get married. To marry such girls, bridegroom and his family demand more dowry. Parents of such girls become helpless and pay dowry as per the demands of the bridegroom as family. It leads to rise in the practice of dowry system,” the textbook says.

When asked about the passage which could be objected to by gender rights groups, an official of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education today said the matter will be looked into.

Board chairman Gangadhar Mamane said, “I will discuss the issue with the board of studies and will then comment on it.”

Citizens from five Muslim-majority countries will no longer be able to obtain Kuwaiti visas, after reports the Gulf state issued tight entry restrictions that mirrored US President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban.

Syrians, Iraqis, Iranians, Pakistanis and Afghans will not be able to obtain visit, tourism or trade Kuwaiti visas with the news coming one day after the US slapped its own restrictions on seven Muslim-majority countries.

Passport holders from the countries will no lot be allowed to enter the Gulf state while the blanket ban is in place and have been told not to apply to visas.

Kuwaiti sources told local media that the restrictions were in place due to the “instability” in the five countries and that the ban would be lifted once the security situation improves.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have all witnessed violence from extremist groups, while Syria and Iraq are embroiled in internal conflicts.

Although mainly peaceful, tensions between Iran and the Gulf have ratched up over the past year with the GCC powers accusing Tehran of attempting to destabalise the region.

Kuwait is concerned about the threat of extremist groups such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group with both militant organisations have a presence in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Gulf state has witnessed a number of militant attacks over the past two years, including the bombing of a Shia mosque in 2015 which left 27 Kuwaits dead.

Kuwait responded by arresting dozens of suspected Daesh sympathizers and rolling out mandatary DNA testing programme and database for the Gulf state’s 4 million population.

Kuwait reportedly issued a ban on all visas for Syrians in 2011, but allowed those inside the country to remain.

It made Kuwait the only country in the world to officially bar entry to Syrians, until the US named Syria in seven countries banned from entering.

Kuwait has issued a number of laws targeting foreigners in recent years, and made it one of the most unfriendly Gulf states towards expatriates.

In 2015, Kuwait was named as the worst place in the world for expatriates in a 64 country InterNations survey.

Meanwhile, Trump’s Muslim ban has been met with widespread outrage since it was signed on Friday, although Gulf states have remained quiet on the issue.

Dubai security chief Dhahi Khalfan outraged Syrians and other nationalities included in the ban when he publically backed Trump’s decision.
