“Its really a miracle that Kya Yehi Sach Hai? has garnered 2 million hits on YouTube Channel just within 3 months”

February 20, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Bobby Vatsa happens to be an extremely talented actor who has really proved his mettle both on the small screen as well as big screen since the last 2 decades. But the turning point in his career was his association with director Y P Singh and his film Kya Yehi Sach Hai? which was released half a decade ago. And this particular Y P Singh’s film Kya Yehi Sach Hai? has got 2 million hits on YouTube within a period of just 3 months. That apart Bobby Vatsa’s performance in Kya Yehi Sach Hai? has really earned hIm a lot of critical appreciation from celebrity albeit hardcore critics.

Bobby, both Y P Singh & you really deserve a huge round of applause for the greatest response that your film Kya Yehi Sach Hai?, directed by Y P Singh, is garnering tremendous response on YouTube Channel, that too after its runaway theatrical success half a decade ago.

Thanks Shaheen I am glad that Kya Yahi Sach Hai has got such a tremendous response, Can you beat it? 2 million hits on YouTube Channel that too just within 3 months, and as you already mentioned it Kya Yehi Sach Hai? had also proved to be a runaway success in its theatrical round half a decade ago. Not only this Shahrukh Khan had also highly appreciated the film on social media platforms when it was released then.

Indeed Kya Yehi Sach Hai? has proved to be a milestone film of your illustrious career spanning almost 2 decades. What say?

Yes you are right! Indeed Kya Yehi Sach Hai? had really proved to be a milestone film of my career and a very special film of my filmic journey till this date. More especially because Kya Yehi Sach Hai? happens to be the most authentic & hard hitting film about the police department. In fact it had also proved to be a benchmark film on the corruption aspect of the politics, the police & the Government department’s honest & dishonest chaotic state. Which was shown beautifully in the film. Based on the real life account of Y P Singh and his times in the police department and his will to fight the corrupt system at that time. The history seems to repeat itself that after 5 years of release the antagonist shown (based on politician Chhagan Bhujbal) is now arrested on the charges of corruption and how corruption became the major disease which still remains incurable. Of course the film had made a lot of affect at that time. Besides Kya Yehi Sach Hai? was highly appreciated then. But now even after a lapse of 5 years, its release on Youtube Channel has created a great response and has got nearly 2 million hits that too in just 3 months. So I would say that Kya Yehi Sach Hai? is a film that represents and still makes people aware about the demonic impact of the corrupt system rampant everywhere.
Kya Yehi Sach Hai? is based on a novel “Carnage By Angels” written by Y P Singh himself who has also directed the film. Apart from myself Shalini, Raju Mavani et al have also enacted key roles in Kya Yehi Sach Hai?.

Ok now time to tell us which are your forthcoming films?

I have just completed 2 films titled The Last Rave & Delhi 47 Kms. The Last Rave is based on real life incident centering around a rave party which was held in Pune. In this film I have enacted the role of a detective who is honest. He is appointed to end corruption in the department. Flora Saini is opposite me. In Delhi 47 Kms I have enacted the role of a Don and Sanya Singh is opposite me.

It seems that you are also really active in events now.

Yes! I am doing a lot of social events. Recently I did 2 Eye Gazing events. In this 2 unknown persons have to sit & stare in each other’s eyes. The message is don’t judge anybody without knowing the real person. It is very relaxing. After this one would not hesitate to connect with anybody. It is a human connection movement. Eye Gazing started in Australia and now it is being organized globally in India and I am organizing it. It is a good platform to connect with people.

And you have also made a short film. Right?

Right again! I have made a short film titled The Cure based on the theme of blood phobia and it has bee made under my own company named Creative Karma. It is an 18 minute short film in English with international actors acting in it. The film was also appreciated globally & ended up bagging 5 varied international awards in US.

Do you think your filmic journey till this date has been satisfactory? And what do you think on reflecting back on this 2 decades of journey?

I would say that indeed my filmic journey till this date has been very interesting, riveting & fruitful. As I have ended up doing films, plays, TV shows, events, social awareness campaigns et al. I had started my career with Shyam Benegal’s Tv show titled Discovery Of India. Not only this I have also ended up working with the best of directors in the best of films. But I think that I am still a kid and would love to remain like a kid forever.

What change have you noticed in all these years?

Down the years I have noticed that the whole industry has changed. The digital change that has come in the last few years is the future & the largest medium to reach the audiences. Now we can’t deny it.

So what have stored up your histrionics sleeves? And as a parting shot also tell us more about your dream of playing 15 varied roles?

Yeah! I am really keen to enact 15 varied roles in a single film. The Late Sanjeev Kumar happens to be my favorite actor who had enacted 9 roles. Then Kamal Hassan Sir had enacted 10 roles in Dashavataram. I am really looking forward to break these records. Of course I am in search of a good script for one of my forthcoming films in order to fulfill my long cherished dream.

Tamil Nadu parties slam Karnataka’s move to construct dam in Mekedatu

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Mekedatu

Chennai/Bengaluru: Political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the main opposition DMK, on Friday slammed Karnataka’s proposed move to construct check dams across river Cauvery in that state.

The parties urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to prevent Karnataka from going ahead with its move.

“The newly-formed AIADMK government should immediately take up the issue with the Centre and prevent Karnataka’s proposed move,” DMK working president M K Stalin said in a statement.

Terming Karnataka’s decision as “unilateral”, he said DMK was of the opinion that the move would harm “relations between the two states”.

CPI(M) Tamil Nadu unit secretary G Ramakrishnan while condemning the neighbouring state for taking steps to go ahead with its plan, demanded that the Centre immediately intervene and prevent construction of the new dam.

“The party’s Executive Committee urges the Centre to expedite the steps to implement the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal,” he said.

CPI state secretary V Durai Manickam echoed similar views.

“The Chief Minister should convene a meeting comprising various political parties, farmers associations and press the Centre on the issue,” he said.

Karnataka had proposed to construct check dams across the Cauvery at Mekedatu.

The state claims that the project would meet the drinking water needs of Bengaluru and other towns that would arise in future in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka.

Pakistan Senate upholds Hindu personal law; passes marriage bill

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Pakistan-Supreme-Court

by Kalbe Ali, Dawn

Islamabad: The Hindu community is set to have a personal law for the first time as the Senate on Friday unanimously passed ‘The Hindu Marriage Bill 2017’.

The bill — approved by the National Assembly on Sept 26, 2015 — is likely to get presidential assent next week to become a law.

The bill will mainly help Hindu women get documentary proof of their marriage. It will be the first personal law for Pakistani Hindus, applicable in Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sindh has already formulated its own Hindu marriage law.

The bill presented in the Senate by Law Minister Zahid Hamid faced no opposition or objection. It was mainly due to the considerate and sympathetic views expressed by the senators and the MNAs of all political parties in the relevant standing committees.

The bill was approved by the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights on Jan 2 with an overwhelming majority. However, Senator Mufti Abdul Sattar of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl had opposed the bill, claiming that the Constitution was vast enough to cater for such needs.

While approving the bill, committee chairperson Senator Nasreen Jalil of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had announced: “This was unfair — not only against the principles of Islam but also a human rights violation — that we have not been able to formulate a personal family law for the Hindus of Pakistan.”

Senators Aitzaz Ahsan, Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini and Sitara Ayaz, while supporting the bill, had said it related to the marriage of Hindus living in Pakistan and had nothing to do with Muslims.

Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, who had been working relentlessly for three years to have a Hindu marriage law in the country, expressed gratitude to the parliamentarians.

“Such laws will help discourage forced conversions and streamline the Hindu community after the marriage of individuals,” he said, adding that it was difficult for married Hindu women to prove that they were married, which was one of the key tools for miscreants involved in forced conversion.

The law paves the way for a document ‘Shadi Parath’ — similar to Nikahnama for Muslims — to be signed by a pundit and registered with the relevant government department.

However, the Hindu parliamentarians and members of the community had concerns over one of the clauses of the bill that deals with ‘annulment of marriage’. It states that one of the partners can approach the court for separation if anyone of them changes the religion.

“What we demand that the separation case should be filed before the conversion as it has given an option to the miscreants to kidnap a married woman, keep her under illegal custody and present her in a court that she has converted to Islam and does not want to live with a Hindu man,” Dr Vankwani said.

However, the bill is widely acceptable for Hindus living in Pakistan because it relates to marriage, registration of marriage, separation and remarriage, with the minimum age of marriage set at 18 years for both boys and girls.

Trump declares media ‘the enemy of the American people’

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

President Donald Trump has stepped up his verbal attacks on widely respected US news organisations.

by Al Jazeera

US President Donald Trump has ratcheted up his verbal assault on the media, describing it as “the enemy of the American people” in a tweet.

Shortly after landing at his holiday home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida – where he is spending a third consecutive weekend – the president lashed out.

“The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!” he wrote on Friday.

Trump had tweeted an earlier post which targeted the New York Times, CNN, NBC “and many more” media organisations – and ended it with the exclamation “SICK!”

But he swiftly deleted that before reposting the final version – adding two more “enemies” to his list.

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 17, 2017

Many US presidents have criticised the press in the past, but political analysts say Trump’s language has more closely echoed criticism leveled by authoritarian leaders around the world.

Trump, who regularly accuses the media of overstating his problem, also has accused journalists of failing to show sufficient respect for his accomplishments – including in their coverage of a long-winded press conference on Thursday in which he voiced a litany of grievances against the industry.

Many journalists were taken aback by the extraordinarily combative press conference, which was described by some as bizarre, but Trump echoed words of praise he got from one right wing commentator and insisted that it had been a bravura performance.

The 70-year-old partly built his election campaign on criticising the press as biased.

Month of tumult

In four tumultuous weeks, Trump has seen his national security advisor ousted, a cabinet nominee withdraw, a centerpiece immigration policy fail in the courts and a tidal wave of damaging leaks.

Trump tried to put that first month of difficulties behind him as he pitched himself as a champion of US jobs and industry during a visit to Boeing in South Carolina.

Trump visited North Charleston to renew a campaign vow to champion jobs and industry.

“As your president, I’m going to do everything I can to unleash the power of the American spirit and to put our great people back to work,” he said.

“This is our mantra, ‘buy American and hire American.’ We want products made in America, made by American hands,” he said, pledging to wean the country off imports.

Although the unemployment rate is at a low five percent and wages are rising steadily, a triple whammy of deindustrialisation, globalisation and automation have hit the US heartland hard.

Colombo: Cricket World Cup qualifiers : Mithali, Mona score fifties in nine-wicket win over Bangla

India women produced an all-round effort to trounce Bangladesh women by nine wickets in a Super Six match to qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, here on Friday.

Opting to bowl after winning the toss in the Super Six game of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier, Indian eves first restricted Bangladesh women to a paltry 155 for eight in 50 overs and then chased down the target, reaching 158 for one in 33.3 overs to book a berth in the main event to be held in England in June.

The chase turned out to be a cakewalk for Indian eves with opener Mona Meshram (78 not out off 91 balls) and skipper Mithali Raj (73 not out off 87 balls) hitting fluent fifties to get over the target with consummate ease.

However, India didn’t have the best of starts to their chase losing Deepti Sharma early on. She was caught and bowled by right-arm off-spinner Khadija Tul Kubra.

But then came in Mithali, world’s second-highest run-getter in women’s cricket, and she and Mona hit 22 fours between them to leave Bangladesh in dissaray.

Bangladesh now have no option but to beat Sri Lanka women and surpass their net run-rate, in its last game to keep their World Cup aspirations alive.

Besides India, South Africa is the other team to have secured its place in the CC Women’s World Cup 2017.

Unbeaten so far in the tournament, India will next play Pakistan in their final Super Six game on February 19 at the P Sara Oval.

Earlier, Fargana Hoque (50 off 107 balls) scored a half-century for Bangladesh women while opener Sharmin Akhter made 35 to help get past 150-run mark after being invited to bat.

For Indian women, pacer Mansi Joshi (3/25) picked up three wickets while leg-spinner Devika Vaidya (2/17) accounted for two.

Brief scores: Bangladesh women: 155/8 in 50 overs (Fargana Hoque 50, Sharmin Akhter 35; Mansi Joshi 3/25) lt to India women: 158/1 in 33.3 overs (Mona Meshram 78 n.o., Mithali Raj 73 n.o.; Khadija Tul Kubra 1-37 ).

Enforcement Directorate to invoke treaty with UK to bring Vijay Mallya back

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: A special court in Mumbai has allowed the Enforcement Directorate or ED to invoke the India-UK Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) to bring back embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya to the country to face money laundering probe.

The special court, which is entrusted with hearing cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, had last week approved the Enforcement Directorate’s request to issue an order against Mr Mallya under the India-UK treaty.

ED officials said the court approved their request on the basis of the agency’s investigation and attachment of assets in the criminal case where Mr Mallya and his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) are alleged to have defrauded IDBI Bank to the tune of about Rs. 900 crore.

The ED, they said, has now sent the court-issued request to the Union Home Ministry for further execution of the order in cooperation with its counterparts in the United Kingdom.

The order has come as a fresh blow to the beleaguered businessman as India, through the Ministry of External Affairs, has recently handed over to the UK an extradition request against Mr Mallya, based on a CBI case in the same offence.

The CBI too is probing this alleged loan default case under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Besides the request under MLAT, the ED has also appended the Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) issued by the special court last year, in the official dossier sent to the Home Ministry.

The 1992 India-UK MLAT has a clause where the treaty can be invoked in a criminal probe seeking the “transfer of persons, including persons in custody, for the purpose of assisting in investigations or giving evidence” and it is understood that the ED considers this step a better legal tool than the regular extradition action to get a person under investigation by Indian probe agencies back to the country.

The ED has been wanting Mallya to join the probe in this case “in person” and had issued multiple summons to him but could not get success as Mallya, who is in the UK, never deposed before it.

The ED has virtually exhausted all legal options to bring him back to India including the issuance of NBW against him based on which it had made the requests for revocation of his passport and subsequent deportation bid, apart from seeking an Interpol warrant against him which has remained unsuccessful till now.

The central probe agency is also working to soon file its first charge sheet in the case even as it has attached assets worth Rs. 9,661 crore in this probe case.

The ED had registered a criminal case in this deal last year under the provisions of the PMLA, based on a CBI FIR.

Note ban impacts PepsiCo’s India business: Indra Nooyi

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

indra nooyi

New York: The demonetisation drive in India had a “significant impact” on PepsiCo’s business in the country in the last quarter of 2016 and there are still “lingering effects” of it, according to the food-and-beverage giant’s India-born CEO Indra Nooyi.

“On demonetisation, across the board for pretty much all of industry, and CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) in particular because it hit the individual retailer significantly, demonetisation had a significant impact on our India business in Q4,” Nooyi said during an earnings call for Pepsi’s fourth quarter that ended on December 2016.

Responding to a question during the call on February 15 on whether demonetisation had any impact on Pepsi’s beverage or snack business, Nooyi said there are still some “lingering effects” from the Indian government’s decision to withdraw high-value banknotes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 from circulation, noting that she is “not sure we are totally out of the woods”.

Nooyi, 61, said demonetisation was a “massive change” since about 80% of the currency in circulation in India was no longer legal tender. She added that implementation of the policy too had its “share of challenges” but hoped that things will return to normal by the second quarter that will end in June this year.

“So our hope was that by the time Q2 rolls by we would be through the bulk of the demonetisation challenges and the new currency and the digital currency will be back in circulation and we will be back to retail activity coming back to normal,” Nooyi said.

PepsiCo reported net revenues of $19.51 billion in the last quarter of 2016, up 5% from $18.58 billion in the same quarter in 2015.

Its net income, however, fell 18% to $1.40 billion in the quarter ended December 2016, when compared with $1.71 billion in the year-ago period.

Drugs worth Rs 50 cr seized; athlete who won medals for India among 3 held

February 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Harpreet Singh

New Delhi: An International-level discus thrower, who had bagged two medals for the country, was among three persons arrested from New Delhi railway station with more than 25 kilos of Mephedrone drug (popularly known as meow-meow in party circles), police said on Friday.

The estimated worth of the drugs seized from the accused is around Rs 50 crore.

The discus thrower, identified as Harpreet Singh, won a silver medal at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia and a bronze at the 2006 South Asian Games, before a foot injury cut his career short. “Harpreet’s career was marred with doping charges that had once also fetched him a six-month long ban,” Sanjeev Yadav, DCP (special cell) said.

The other two arrested men were identified as athlete Amandeep Singh, who was pursuing a diploma in hospitality and tourism in London, and Hanish Sarpal who had enrolled in a management course at a university in London, but later dropped out.

Harpreet and Amandeep were nabbed by a special cell team from New Delhi station on Wednesday evening, after the police were informed that the duo would be smuggling meow-meow drugs from Mumbai to the capital.

Police said 25 kilos of Mephedrone was seized from the possession of the accused. Mephedrone is popular in parties and is used as a substitute for cocaine. Wednesday’s recovery was possibly the biggest seizure of the drugs from the national capital, police said.

An officer said the interrogation of the duo led the police to Hanish, who was nabbed from west Delhi’s Janakpuri with another 650 grams of the same drug.

Police claimed that their probe has revealed the drugs as smuggled from the African subcontinent to Mumbai and from there pushed into various Indian cities and even exported to other countries. The arrested trio was allegedly working as the Delhi-based agents of an international drug syndicate.

Police said the men had been lured into joining the racket with promises of large sums of money after their careers failed.

Harpreet had allegedly entered the drug trade after trying his hand in the real estate business which crashed because of a slump in the market.

Harpreet was the All India Inter University Champion for three years from 2006 to 2008, but failed to make it to the Indian squad for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. A foot injury that he picked up before the Commonwealth squad selection ensured that he didn’t make the cut, said the officer.

The other two suspects had allegedly met in the United Kingdom while studying. The duo tried to find work there, but had failed and returned to India and got sucked in the drug trade.
