Child trafficking case: Embarrassed Bengal BJP fires Juhi Chowdhury from party

March 2, 2017 by Nasheman

Juhi Chowdhury

Kolkata: The Bengal unit of BJP on Wednesday removed Juhi Chowdhury from the post of general secretary of the party’s Mahila Morcha (women’s wing) following her arrest in connection with the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case.

The party also expelled her father, Rabindranarayan, from the state unit in which he was a committee member.

Juhi was arrested from near the Indo-Nepal border on Tuesday night. She had been absconding for the past 10 days, after the prime accused in the trafficking racket told the CID that she had promised to help them get favour from the Union government by using her clout in the central leadership in Delhi. The decision was announced by state BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

Ghosh, however, did not rule out the possibility of the party providing legal help to Juhi. Meanwhile, many in Bengal BJP feel she was removed in haste after the prime accused in the case made a statement on Tuesday that Juhi had accompanied her to Delhi and held talks with senior party leaders like Kailash Vijayvargiya, while she waited in an adjacent room.

“Bengal leadership had no option left before it than to remove Juhi from the party as names of our senior leaders are flashed in the media in connection with the child trafficking case,” said a senior BJP leader, requesting anonymity.

BJP workers said Vijayvargiya is set to visit Kolkata on March 9 to discuss with party members the child trafficking case and the alleged involvement of party leaders in it.

Some party leaders the removal as a damage control exercise to protect the entire state unit leadership from being grilled by the central leadership. “One of our state leaders, Joyprakash Mazumdar, was also arrested by police for his alleged involvement in a bribery case, but the party is yet to remove him from the organisation… Juhi’s act has embarrassed not only the state leadership, but also put the central leadership in a critical situation and our state leaders were virtually forced to remove her to save the entire party from future embarrassment,” said the senior BJP leader.

On Wednesday, Juhi was produced before a Jalpaiguri court, which remanded her to CID custody for the next 12 days.

HC allows Pepsi, Coca Cola to draw water from TN river, people stand in knee deep water in protest

March 2, 2017 by Nasheman

pepsi coca cola

Tirunelveli: Upset over the Madras High Court order allowing Pepsi and Coca Cola to draw water from the Thamirabarani river for their bottling plants in this district for manufacturing soft drinks, a large number or persons today stood in knee deep water in the river to express their ire.

They also protested against the “laxity” on the part of the authorities in handling the case.

The protesters also shouted slogans against the state government for not taking necessary steps to prevent the carbonated water companies from drawing water from Thamirabharani, when the farmers in the state were facing acute water shortage for their farming activities.

The High Court today allowed the Cola majors to draw water from the Thamirabarani river for their bottling plants in Tirunelveli district for manufacturing soft drinks besides packaged drinking water.

The Court had in November last year banned the firms from drawing water from the river.

The soft drinks companies sought a direction on lifting the ban on the ground that they were using only the surplus water in the river.

The order has come even as a call by the Traders Federation in Tamil Nadu to ban sales of Coca Cola and Pepsi soft drinks came into effect yesterday with its President A M Vikrama Raja declaring drinks as ‘toxic’ for consumption.

Islam will be largest religion in the world by 2070, says report

March 2, 2017 by Nasheman

by Olivia Rudgard, The Telegraph

islam

Islam is the only religion growing faster than the world’s population, and it will be the largest in the world by 2070, research has found.

US-based Pew Research Centre analysed demographic change among the world’s major religions and found that the world’s population of Muslims will grow by 73 per cent between 2010 and 2050, compared to 35 per cent for Christians, the next fastest-growing faith.

The world’s population will grow by 37 per cent over the same period. If those rates of growth continue past 2050, Muslims will outnumber Christians by 2070, the report found.

It also says that Muslims will make up 10 per cent of Europe’s population.

In 2010 there were 1.6bn Muslims in the world, and 2.17bn Christians. By 2050, there will be 2.76bn Muslims and 2.92bn Christians – and if both religions continue at that rate of growth, Islam will have a larger number of followers than Christianity by 2070.

Atheists, agnostics and non-religious people will decline from 16.4 per cent of the world’s population to 13.2 per cent by 2050, the report added, despite growing in Europe and North America.

The changes are partly due to the various fertility rates each religion has. Muslims have the highest, at 3.1 children per woman, followed by Christians, at 2.7.

Islam also has a much younger follower-base than other religions, meaning believers still have childbearing years ahead. 34 per cent are aged under 15, compared to a global average of 27 per cent.

Christianity is also likely to suffer as more converts leave to become non-religious or to join other faiths, the report predicted.

Around 40 million people are projected to switch into Christianity globally, while 106 million are predicted to leave.

The report also summarises findings from a survey last year into European attitudes towards Muslims.

“Majorities in Hungary, Italy, Poland and Greece say they view Muslims unfavorably, while negative attitudes toward Muslims are much less common in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Northern and Western Europe.

“People who place themselves on the Right side of the ideological scale are much more likely than those on the Left to see Muslims negatively,” it said.

HDFC, ICICI, Axis Bank slap charges on cash transactions

March 2, 2017 by Nasheman

icici

New Delhi: Banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank began charging a minimum amount of Rs 150 per transaction for cash deposits and withdrawals beyond four free transactions in a month.

The charges would apply to savings as well as salary accounts effective from today, leading private sector player HDFC Bank said in a circular. The bank would also cap the third party cash transactions at Rs 25,000 per day, while cash handling charges would be withdrawn effective today, the circular added.

The move was seen in some quarters as aimed at discouraging cash transactions and furthering the digital payment drive. For the basic no-frills accounts, maximum four cash withdrawals would continue to remain free and there would be no fees for cash deposits.

In case of ICICI Bank, the charges are same as they were before the demonetisation move announced on November 8, while there is an increase in such fees in case of some others.

According to details on ICICI Bank website, there will be no charge for first four transactions a month in home branch while Rs 5 per thousand rupees would be charged thereafter subject to a minimum of Rs 150 in the same month. The third party limit would be Rs 50,000 per day.

For non-home branches, ICICI Bank would not charge anything for first cash withdrawal of a calendar month and Rs 5 per thousand rupees thereafter subject to a minimum of Rs 150.

For anywhere cash deposit, ICICI Bank would charge Rs 5 per thousand rupees (subject to a minimum of 150) at branches, while deposit at Cash Acceptance Machine would be free of charge for first cash deposit of a calendar month and Rs 5 per thousand thereafter.

ATM intercharge charges have also been re-introduced. At Axis Bank, the first five transactions or Rs 10 lakhs of cash deposits or withdrawals would be free and charged at Rs 5 per thousand rupees or Rs 150, whichever is higher.

It could not be ascertained whether the public sector banks have also begun imposing such charges. When contacted, a senior official said there has been no directive from the government to the banks regarding levy of such charges.

Govt dumps Bengaluru steel flyover project, in a major victory to citizens’ protests

March 2, 2017 by Nasheman

steel flyover

Bengaluru: The controversial steel flyover project has been cancelled by the Congress government on Thursday, according to media reports.

Bengaluru Development Minister K J George said that the steel flyover not to be constructed.

The 6.9-km steel flyover was to connect Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal with an extension on Sankey Road up to LRDE complex.

The project was vehemently opposed by the civil society and commuters due its impact on greenery of the city. They argued that steel flyover is not required at the cost of 800-odd trees as the city is known for its trees.

Also, the opposition party leader BS Yeddyurappa had accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of taking Rs 150 crore as kickback for sanctioning the controversial steel flyover in Bengaluru.

Jharkhand: 800 Muslim families speak out, return dowry in silent protest

Palamu: For the past few decades, one of the major social evils among the Muslim families in Jharkhand’s Palamu district was the practice of dowry system. However, now a unique social transformation is sweeping the Muslim mohallas in the region thanks to a massive campaign led by clerics and community elders.

According to reports, hundreds of families in Palamu are returning the dowry they had taken during their sons’ weddings. Over the last one year, around 800 families came out in the open about accepting dowry and have subsequently returned the money. To date, over Rs 6 crore in cash has been returned to the brides’ families.

This process kicked off once Haji Mumtaz Ali, a native of Pokhari village in Latehar, launched a campaign against dowry in April last year. Following his footsteps, the community elders waged a war against dowry, an un-Islamic practice plaguing the lives of thousands of families, especially the poor.

The ‘maulvis’, too, resolved not to solemnise ‘nikah’ where any exchange of dowry was involved.

“The success of our campaign against dowry is astounding. So far, over 800 grooms’ families in Latehar and Palamu districts have returned Rs 6 crore in cash to the brides’ families. More importantly, the marriages are now being solemnised without any exchange of money,” said Ali, who was busy preparing for a massive community meeting at Daltonganj on March 7.

“The war against dowry will eat up poor families like cancer till it is completely wiped out. There are still a few families who are yet to give up the evil practice. Earlier, the Muslim community did not pay dowry, but of late, dowry has become a part of marriages, in the process badly hampering the sanctity of this sacred bond,” Ali said.

“We will also devise a strategy during the next meeting to tackle such families,” he said.

“I feel proud to declare that what I had done earlier was wrong. To make things correct, I am returning the money. I will never demand or offer dowry in future,” said Salim Ansari, who returned the dowry.

ISIL video threatens China with ‘rivers of bloodshed’

by Al Jazeera

ISIL fighters from China’s Uighur ethnic minority have vowed to return home and “shed blood like rivers” in what security experts said marked the first such threat against Chinese targets.

The threat came in a half-hour video released Monday by a division of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) featuring fighters from China’s Uighur minority, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which analysed the footage.

China has for years blamed exiled Uighur “separatists” for a series of violent attacks in its western Xinjiang region – the Muslim Uighur homeland – and warned of the potential for them to link up with violent groups.

In the video, a Uighur fighter issued the threat against China just before executing an alleged informant.

“Oh, you Chinese who do not understand what people say. We are the soldiers of the Caliphate, and we will come to you to clarify to you with the tongues of our weapons, to shed blood like rivers and avenging the oppressed,” according to SITE’s translation.

The footage also showed fighters, including heavily armed children, giving speeches, praying, and killing other “informants”.

Many Muslim Uighurs complain of cultural and religious repression and discrimination by China.

Authorities have banned or strictly controlled the observance of certain Muslim practices, such as growing beards, wearing headscarves, and fasting during Ramadan, calling them symbols of “Islamic extremism”.

A US think-tank said in July that Chinese religious restrictions on Muslims may have driven more than 100 to join ISIL.

“When we see the government involved in a very heavy crackdown, it hasn’t really ever solved the problem, it hasn’t made it go away,” said Raffaello Pantucci, director of International Security Studies at the UK-based Royal United Services Institute.

“In some cases it has made it worse.”

The video appears to be ISIL’s “first direct threat” against China, Michael Clarke, an expert on Xinjiang at the National Security College of Australian National University, told AFP news agency.

“It is the first time that Uighur-speaking militants have claimed allegiance to IS,” he added.

The video showed China is now “very firmly a target of jihadist rhetoric”, Clarke said, marking a shift from years past when it rarely figured in statements by armed groups.

But Clarke said it also could indicate a possible split among Uighur fighters, as it includes a warning to those fighting with the al-Qaeda-aligned Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) in Syria.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Wednesday he had not seen the video but noted that “East Turkestan terrorist forces have been posing a severe threat to China’s security.”

He called for international cooperation “to combat such terrorist forces”.

Show of force

China maintains tight security in Xinjiang but a drumbeat of deadly unrest has continued. A knife attack last month left eight dead, including three attackers, police said.

The video was released on the same day China staged the latest in a series of mass rallies by armed police in Xinjiang meant to indicate Chinese resolve in crushing security threats.

More than 10,000 officers gathered Monday in the regional capital Urumqi – the fourth such show of force this year in Xinjiang.

In one violence-wracked corner of Xinjiang, authorities are offering rewards of up to $730,000 to those who expose attack plots or “kill, wound, or subdue” any assailants.

The ISIL video also featured images of Chinese riot police guarding mosques, patrolling Uighur markets, and arresting men in what appears to be western China. The Chinese flag is pictured engulfed in flames.

Clarke said the hints of a Uighur split could “intensify the threat to China” as it indicates Uighur fighters may be able to tap into the capabilities of both ISIL and al-Qaeda.

Overseas analysts have up to now expressed doubts about the strength of Uighur fighters, with some saying China exaggerates the threat to justify tough security.

I am from conservative family and the need for such dialogue was director prerogative says Nikila a stage artist in her debut film Srinivasa Kalyana. Although she has tough role the inner senses are soft. She is from a conservative family and such dialogues are not her cup of tea. She has delivered it because it is for her role Radha.
