Pirates have hijacked an Indian commercial ship off the coast of Somalia, the second attack in weeks after years of inactivity by pirates, industry and security sources said.

United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which coordinates the management of all merchant ships and yachts in the Gulf of Aden area, said on Monday it had received information that a vessel en route to Bosasso from Dubai had been hijacked “in the vicinity of Socotra (Island)”.

A spokesman said UKMTO was unable to confirm the location of the vessel, which he identified as Al Kausar, or what had taken place, and that investigations were ongoing.

“We understand Somali pirates hijacked a commercial Indian ship and (it is heading) towards Somalia shores,” Abdirizak Mohamed Dirir, a former director of the anti-piracy agency in Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, told Reuters news agency.

Somali pirates hijacked an oil tanker last month, the first commandeering of a vessel since 2012, but released it after a fight with the Puntland marine force.

Somalis have been angered recently by foreign fishermen flooding into their waters, some of whom have been given licences to fish there by the Somali government.

Graeme Gibbon-Brooks of UK-based Dryad Maritime Security said industry sources had told him the Indian vessel was en route to Bosasso from Dubai when it was hijacked on Saturday.

The pirates were on board and were taking the ship and its 11 crew members to Eyl in Puntland, he said.

Gibbon-Brooks told AP news agency on Monday that the hijackers wanted a ransom for the crew.

India’s ministry of external affairs told Reuters it could not confirm the hijack but some local Indian media reported the ship was called Al Kaushar.

In a separate incident that highlights increased pirate activity, UKMTO said on its website that early on Monday, six skiffs had approached a vessel and that ladders and hooks were sighted.

The vessel raised alarm, prompting armed guards to take position and the skiffs left, leaving the vessel unharmed, UKTMO said.

Kirti Kulhari is back after her much
appreciated performance in PINK and plays a title role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s next INDU SARKAR which is about a stammering poetess with emergency as backdrop. The film has been 90% shot and here’s the 1st look of the actor that shows there is yet another powerful performance up her sleeves. Says Kirti, “INDU SARKAR (her character in the film) is delicate, gone through immense pain & suffering yet very caring & loving and through her journey in the film finds her true & free self. Shooting these kind of scenes is always depressing & exhausting yet liberating as you explore the pain inside you, face it & use it to express what the character is going through.” Asked her if she had to go through any preparation since it is an intense film, she says, “There’s a preparation & method before shooting. I took classes for voice modulation to make stammering look convincing. Once on set I believe in spontaneity but there are times especially during such intense scenes that I try not to break the mood & rhythm and avoid any kind of distractions.” Madhur Bhandarkar is also taking detour from the glamour world stories and one is certainly looking forward to INDU SARKAR.

April 3, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Bank-Chor

They will become the only studio in the world to release a film theatrically simultaneously in 16D besides Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality formats, where the viewer will also be a part of the film, instead of just watching it.

The film Bank – Chor, starring Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Anand Oberoi & Rhea Chakraborty, is a story of 3 idiots trying to rob a bank… and how they pick the worst day possible to do it. In the past, YRF has been the 1st ever to release a film in IMAX with ATMOS sound. Bank – Chor has been designed with the next level of technology & immersive experiences where 16D helps activate all senses for a viewer in terms of touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste and also thought, imagination & feeling. In essence, the film will make you a part of the bank as one of the hostages when the heist is taking place.

All the partner multiplex & exhibition chains are apparently overhauling their screening systems to accommodate the film accordingly, as the film is scheduled to change the entire film viewing experience forever. They are also keeping medical staff on stand – by, as the experience could get too overwhelming for most audiences, who typically use just 5 senses.

Speaking on the same, Riteish Deshmukh said, “I’m thrilled to be a part of this 1st ever technological innovation in the Indian Film Industry. 3D is so last season, when you have 16D! I’m certain Bank – Chor will steal a lot of hearts but since you can’t take chances, I’m also keeping a 16 – day fast & chanting Om Y – Films O Namah 16 times a day… am told it really works!”

Adds Vivek Anand Oberoi, “This is ground -breaking stuff & the 1st time ever I experienced it, it really rocked my world. We also consulted famed numerologist from Chinchpokli, Baba Champak Chandrakant Chiplunkar, who advised us on 16th Jun, 2017 being the right release date… now there’s no stopping us!”

Bank – Chor is a fun comic thriller directed by Bumpy & produced by Ashish Patil. It features music by Shri Sriram, Superbia (Gourov Dasgupta, Roshin Balu & Shaan), Kailash Kher, Rochak Kohli, Baba Sehgal & Shameer Tandon. It is set for release worldwide on 16th June, 2017. Y – Films Makes A Li’l Film With A Big Heart. The short,Where Kids Read Sexist Comments By Adults, Was Launched Recently At The India Today Woman Summit

Y – Films, the team that loves pushing big boundaries, be it for the cause of gender equality (Man’s World), transgender equality (the Cannes’ Lion Grand Prix winner 6 – Pack Band), feminism (Ladies Room), sex education (Sex Chat with Pappu & Papa), or, umm, weddings (Bang Baaja Baaraat), makes a li’l film that will pull your heartstrings.

What happens when kids read all the atrocious sexist rubbish that adults (mostly men) land up saying… from Trump to Indian politicians? Y – Films decided to actually put that to test with a bunch of really bright kids, who teach us all a thing or two about why it’s important that we don’t judge, label or discriminate by gender. They beautifully drive home the point Y – Films has always been hammering – Don’t Grow Up!

Can’t release water to Tamil Nadu, says CM Siddaramaiah

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday reiterated the state’s inability to release Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu, saying there was no sufficient water in the state’s reservoirs at present.

An official delegation from Tamil Nadu on Saturday held meetings with Karnataka chief secretary Subhash Khuntia and other state government officials in Bengaluru, with a request to release 3 tmcft of Cauvery water on humanitarian grounds.

“Their (Tamil Nadu) officials had come… they have had meeting with our chief secretary. We have explained to them that there is no water in our Cauvery reservoirs. We have told them that if there are rains and we get water, we will give for drinking,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.

He said “now, we don’t have water to give them.”

A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra on March 21 said all interim orders of releasing 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water by Karnataka would continue to be in force till further orders.

Following this, Karnataka had expressed its inability in supplying Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in line with the apex court’s directive, saying the state itself is facing a shortage of drinking water.

Meanwhile, former chief minister SM Krishna, who recently joined the BJP,termed as “correct” the state’s stand not to release water to Tamil Nadu, citing the reason that water level in the reservoirs was just enough for drinking water needs.

Noting that Tamil Nadu’s main intention was to get the Cauvery Management Board created, former chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy hit out at the state government and the ruling BJP at the Centre and its MPs for not taking the issue “seriously”.

Pointing at a protest by Tamil Nadu farmers in Delhi, he said, “the central government can take decision at any time… they (Congress and BJP) are more interested in winning the polls (by-polls).”

The Supreme Court will on July 11 commence the final hearing of the appeals filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal on sharing of water for 15 consecutive workings days.

Super Sindhu conquers Marin to win her maiden India Open title

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

P.V. Sindhu

New Delhi: Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu produced a superlative performance beating reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain 21-19 21-16 to win her maiden India Open Super Series title, here on Sunday.

In front of a partisan home crowd at the Sirifort Sports Complex, the third seeded Indian dominated the match from the start to win the summit clash in 46 minutes.

The win also narrowed down Sindhu’s head-to-head record against the Spaniard to 4-5. Sindhu had last defeated Marin in the BWF Super Series in Dubai last year.

Earlier, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark clinched the men’s singles title beating Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chen Chou in straight games.

Third seed Axelsen took just 36 minutes to edge past Chou 21-13 21-10 to claim his maiden India Open title at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

In a much-anticipated match of the evening, a replay of Rio Olympics title showdown, the star Indian shuttler came out with a purpose and looked determined for a revenge.

On the day, Sindhu was far better than Marin controlling the proceedings with ease.

Marin was guilty of committing plenty of unforced errors with Sindhu’s deft drops and powerful cross-court smashes also keeping the Spaniard at bay.

In both the games, it was Sindhu who took the initiative and set the tempo with early leads.

In the opening game Sindhu raced to a 6-1 lead before Marin slowly and steadily clawed her way back into the affair.

After the first six points, it was a closely fought encounter between the two of the world’s best shuttlers.

Sindhu went into the break with a slim 11-9 lead.

The intense fight continued thereafter and at one stage both the shuttlers were locked at 16-16 when Marin won a brilliant rally with a cross court drop shot.

For the first time in the game, Marin took a slim 19-18 lead over Sindhu but the Indian came back strongly to deny her opponent any breathing space with a smash that was followed by a drop shot at net to even the scores t 19-19.

The Indian reached game point when Marin found the net and she wrapped it up in no time with a body smash.

In the second game, Sindhu continued in the same vein to race to a 4-0 lead.

Just like the opening game, Marin quietly clawed her way back into the game to reduce the margin to 6-7.

But Sindhu Sunday was just way above her rival as he managed to hold on to her lead to go into the breather leading 11-9 and then did just enough to keep her dominance.

Much to the expectation of the crowd, Sindhu reached the game and match point at 20-15 when Marin committed another unforced error.

The Spaniard managed to save one match point but Sindhu sealed it on the very next point when Marin found the net again.

In other title clashes of the day, seventh seeded Japanese duo of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto stunned third seeded compatriots Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao 16-21 21-19 21-10 to lift the women’s doubles title.

Top seeds Siwei Zheng and Qingchen Chen of China defeated countrymen and second seeds Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong 22-24 21-14 21-17 to claim the mixed doubles title.

The men’s doubles crown was annexed by fourth seeded Indonesian pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, who beat sixth seeds compatriots Ricky Karandasuwardi and Angga Pratama 21-11 21-15 in a contest that lasted exactly half-an-hour.

He was also the national president of the legal cell of the SP.

BJP swept the UP assembly elections and returned to power after 14 years by winning 312 seats while the SP-Congress alliance got 54 seats.

Bhatia, however, refrained from launching any personal attack on former UP chief minister or his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Bhatia resigned from all posts of the SP on February 5 in the run up to the elections saying that it was becoming difficult for him to continue serving the party.

He then accused the SP of compromising the very principles of democracy, secularism and socialism that he had had strong belief in.

At the time of his resignation, Bhatia refused to disclose the reason why he was leaving the party.

Attacks on Nigerians ‘xenophobic, racial’: African envoys to India

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Nigerians attacked

New Delhi: In a strong reaction to attacks on African nationals, heads of African missions in India termed the incidents as “xenophobic and racial” and asserted that no known, sufficient and visible deterring measures have been taken by the government.

The envoys, who recently held a “special” meeting on the incidents, called for an independent investigation by the Human Rights Council as well as other human rights bodies and also to comprehensively report the matter to the Commission of the African Union.

They said they expectated a strong condemnation from the highest political level both nationally and locally. A press release dated March 31 from the office of the dean of the African group head of the missions here, said the meeting was convened to look into the recent attacks against African students in Greater Noida.

“The meeting unanimously agreed that those accumulated attacks against Africans are xenophobic and racial in nature,” they said. They reviewed the incidents that have taken place in the past and concluded that no known, sufficient and visible deterring measures were taken by the Indian government, it said.

Condemning the recent attacks, they expressed their deep concern and also noted that these “reprehensible events, both outstanding and unresolved cases against Africans, were not sufficiently condemned by the Indian authorities”.

There are missions of more than 50 African countries which are accredited to India. Four Nigerian students were attacked by a group of Greater Noida residents who took out a candle-light march last after a 17-year-old boy Manish died due to suspected drug overdose.

The protest march was taken out after the police released some Nigerians detained for questioning in connection with death of Manish, a class 12 student, due to “lack of evidence”.
