AAP averts crisis : Kumar Vishwas promoted as Rajasthan party chief, Amanatullah suspended

New Delhi: The feud in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seemingly ended on Wednesday after Kumar Vishwas declared his decision to not quit.

According to reports, top party leaders at a meeting on Wednesday morning agreed to take action against the Delhi councillor Amantullah Khan, who had accused Vishwas of plotting a coup against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Vishwas, 46, has also been made the in-charge of AAP in Rajasthan, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, adding Khan has been suspended.

Several MLAs had earlier said that they were in favour of a greater role for Vishwas in the AAP after the party’s poor show in the Punjab Assembly and MCD polls.

Vishwas had threatened to quit if stern action was not taken against Okhla MLA Khan, who had also accused him of being a RSS-BJP agent.

Vishwas had accused Khan of being a mask and acting at the behest of a coterie surrounding Kejriwal. After the emotional outburst, Vishwas had threatened to quit the party.

Khan had on Monday resigned from the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC).

Earlier, Vishwas had differed with Kejriwal on the issue of electronic voting machines (EVMs). He had refused to attribute the AAP’s recent poll losses to alleged manipulation of EVMs and had instead stressed on the need to introspect.

Earlier in the day, several AAP MLAs, including Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra met Vishwas, seeking to pacify him.

However, it appeared to have yielded no results. Vishwas also remained adamant on Khan being sacked from the party. Khan had resigned from the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) on Monday.

Bhatkal: The admin of a WhatsApp group stands arrested for offensive post in the group. In the first instance reported from Karnataka after a recent law made group admins responsible for posts appearing in social groups, the first arrest was reported from Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada district near here.

The admin of ‘The Balse Boys’, Krishna Sannathamma Naik (30), resident of Doddabalse in Bailur, Murudeshwar, has been arrested.

Naik, an auto rickshaw driver by profession, was the admin of the said group. He has been accused of posting derogatory matter about Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his group.

As per information, a photograph of Narendra Modi that was morphed and made to look ugly and obscene, was circulated through this group. A person named Anand Manjunath Naik had filed a complaint in this connection in Murudeshwar police station. The police, who registered case, acted swiftly and made this arrest.

Another accused, Ganesh Naik, was also arrested, and he secured bail through the court. The third accused, Balakrishna Naik, has remained elusive and the police are making effort to find and arrest him, it is learnt.

India handed first loss of Sultan Azlan Shah by Australia

Ipoh: India’s hockey team was overpowered by reigning world champions Australia 1-3 despite starting strongly and suffered the first loss in three matches of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup here on Tuesday.

In the match pitting last edition’s finalists, India kept the Australian attackers at bay before taking the lead through Harmanpreet Singh, who drove from the right — a rare field goal for a defender cum set-piece specialist in the 26th minute.

Australia’s equaliser came four minutes later when Eddie Ockenden dived near the right post to put the ball in as both the teams went into the half-time 1-1.

After the break, Australia continued their attacking game, earning as many as three penalty corners in the first four minutes. The third one saw Matthew Swann mistrapping but Tom Craig capitalised on it and banged one into the near post, stunning goalkeeper Akash Chikte.

The goal further boosted the Australians’ confidence, and they controlled the midfield which forced India on to the backfoot. Jake Whetton came close to double Australia’s advantage as he fired from the top of the ‘D’, but the ball missed the mark by a whisker in the 48th minute.

Then came a moment of solo brilliant effort from Tom Wickham, who dodged past three Indian defenders from the right to arrive at the centre of the circle before employing an emphatic backhander to beat Chikte.

Despite the two-goal advantage, Australia didn’t relent and kept attacking. India put out their goalkeeper to put one more outfield player. They did get a couple of opportunities to counter-attack but none of these came close to reducing the goal difference, as Australia, the tournament’s record champions, delivered a clinical second-half performance.

This was India’s first loss of the tournament, having earlier defeated England and New Zealand. They face Japan on Wednesday before meeting hosts Malaysia in their final round-robin match on Thursday.

Kurdish forces are reported to have taken 90 percent of Tabqa city in Syria’s Raqqa province from ISIL amid clashes that have left an estimated 19 people dead.

The claim was made by the official spokesperson for Ghadab al-Furat, a Kurdish group fighting under the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which launched a campaign in October 2016 to retake Raqqa, the de facto capital of ISIL, or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group, in northern Syria.

“After taking the old city, we now control around 90 percent of Tabqa … we advanced against the ISIL and pushed further to the other parts of the city,” Jihan Sheikh, of the Ghadab al-Furat (dubbed Wrath of the Euphrates), told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

Talal Silo, an SDF spokesman, told Al Jazeera that the Euphrates dam – also known as Tabqa dam – and some neighbourhoods are still controlled by ISIL but ongoing clashes are taking place to fully recapture the city.

“The first, second and third neighbourhoods that make up al-Thawra city, in addition to the Euphrates dam are still under ISIL control, but the battle continues to liberate them,” Silo said.

Tabqa city is made up of two parts, the old city and al-Thawra city, which is also known as the new city.

According to Pentagon estimates from last year, the SDF has more than 40,000 fighters.

“Clashes are still taking place, at least 19 ISIL fighters have been killed in the fighting. We managed to recover their weapons, cars and a tank,” Sheikh said.

Ahmad, a Tabqa-based activist, told Al Jazeera that at least 131 civilians have been killed in Raqqa in the past 44 days.

“Our city is destroyed. One of the main hospitals in Tabqa was destroyed in an air raid and many field hospitals too.

“What people should know is that south of Tabqa there are oil fields producing millions of pounds a day. Why else would the US back these Kurdish fighters to this extent?”

The Rojava Defence units, another Kurdish group taking part in the campaign, said at least 5,000 civilians fled the fighting and reached safe areas but are in the need of urgent humanitarian aid.

In Rajm Salibi, in the northern Syrian province of Hasakah, at least 24 civilians and SDF fighters have been killed in fighting between the SDF and ISIL, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The SDF is trying to retake Raqqa province after capturing the south of Tabqa last week.

ISIL captured Raqqa in January 2014, and took Tabqa’s airbase from the Syrian government in August the same year.

It lost the strategic Tabqa airbase , about 45km west of Raqqa, to the SDF last month.

The SDF was founded in Syria’s mainly Kurdish northeastern region in October 2015 and is made up of at least 15 armed factions, mostly fighters from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units and the Free Syrian Army.

The United Nations recently said in a press release that at least 39,000 newly displaced people fled to the Jib Al-Shaair makeshift camp in Raqqa, where four out of five people are staying in the open air without appropriate shelter.

As the Syrian conflict enters its seventh year, more than 400,000 people have been killed in the fighting and over 12 million Syrians – half the country’s prewar population – have been displaced from their homes.

Hamas has presented a new political document that accepts the formation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, without recognising the statehood of Israel, and says that the conflict in Palestine is not a religious one.

The positions were made official on Monday in Qatar’s capital, Doha, by Khaled Meshaal, the leader-in-exile of the Palestinian group that runs the besieged Gaza Strip.

“We shall not waive an inch of the Palestinian home soil, no matter what the recent pressures are and no matter how long the occupation,” Meshaal said as he revealed the document to the public after two years of work.

“Hamas rejects any idea except liberating the home soil entirely and completely, although it does not necessarily mean we recognise the Zionist entity or give up any of our Palestinian rights.”

While Hamas’ 1988 founding charter called for the takeover of all of mandate Palestine, including present-day Israel, the new document says it will accept the 1967 borders as the basis for a Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital and the return of refugees to their homes.

The 1967 borders refer to those that existed before the war in which Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

But it does not go as far as to fully recognise Israel and says Hamas does not relinquish its goal of “liberating all of Palestine”.

“Hamas considers the establishment of a Palestinian state, sovereign and complete, on the basis of the June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital and the provision for all the refugees to return to their homeland is an agreeable form that has won a consensus among all the movement members,” Meshaal said.

The document also falls short of accepting the two-state solution that is assumed to be the end product of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

It also clarifies that Hamas’ fight is with the “Zionist project”, not with the religion of Judaism, making a distinction between those who believe in Judaism and “Zionist Israeli citizens who occupy Palestinian lands”.

It also sidesteps language in the group’s original charter that affirms its connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, and says that Hamas is a fully independent organisation.

Analysts said the release of the document appears to be an attempt by Hamas to seem more pragmatic and help it to avoid international isolation.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Mohammad Abu Saada, a professor at Gaza’s al-Azhar University, called the new document a bid to “accommodate Egyptian conditions and calm Egyptian fears” regarding Hamas connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt has classified as a “terror” group since democratically elected president Mohammad Morsi was ousted in a 2013 military coup.

While in the 1988 charter Hamas affirmed its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood by mentioning it six times, the new document asserted Hamas strict Palestinian credentials as a “liberation movement” that uses Islam as its main ideological component.

“Hamas is trying to walk a fine line between its hardliners and its own moderates,” said Abu Saada of al-Azhar University.

“In one way, the moderates can say they accepted a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, but the hardliners can still say they are not recognising Israel.”

Azzam Tamimi, author of “Hamas: A History from Within”, told Al Jazeera that while Hamas leaders were unlikely to say so, the new document would “practically” replace the group’s old charter.

“They would prefer to say that the old charter expressed Hamas in 1988, and that now, Hamas is a different organisation. It has different insight and understanding of the conflict and that today’s document is what speaks for Hamas today.”

Crippling blockade

Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, after winning elections and forcefully pushing its Fatah rivals out. Since then, Gaza has suffered three major Israeli assaults, whick killed more than 3,500 Palestinians, and a crippling 10-year-long siege.

“The question is whether this change will do anything to try and lift the blockade, or anything to get this struggling economy back on its feet,” said Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, reporting from Gaza City.

Israeli officials rejected the document before it was made official, calling it an attempt by Hamas to trick the world into believing it was becoming a more moderate group.

“Hamas is attempting to fool the world but it will not succeed,” said David Keyes, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

The document’s release comes just days ahead of Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Washington on May 3 and as US President Donald Trump’s administration prepares a new push to forge peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Abbas and his Fatah party have long pushed for a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, and have engaged in talks with Israel on that basis.

But Israel has frequently refused to enter into political talks with Abbas’ PA on the grounds that they do not represent all Palestinians.

Mustafa Barghouti, leader of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Al Jazeera that this move by Hamas reflected a level of “political maturity”.

“Acceptance of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders … means accepting a two-state solution. In my opinion this is going to embarrass Israel a lot,” said Barghouti.

“We’ve seen the Israeli reaction, which looks very frightened, first of all from the greater possibility of Palestinian unity, but also … of peace and the possibility of peace.”

Either prove charges or apologise: Telangana govt to Digvijaya

Hyderabad: The Telangana government today asked AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh to either prove his allegation that the state police has set up a “bogus” ISIS website to radicalise Muslim youth or tender an apology.

The government also warned of action “as per the law” against the senior Congress leader if he failed to apologise. “The Telangana Police is widely appreciated (for its professional competence). He (Digvijaya) has made a false allegation that we created something, induced Muslim children and did something. He must prove it,” state Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy told reporters.

“If he fails to prove it, he has to openly apologise to the police department. If he does not do that also, then action will be taken against him as per the law,” he said. “The state government would take action against him as per the law if he fails to apologise,” Reddy said.

MLA from Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad, M Gopinath, has already complained to the police on the matter, Reddy said. “Would the police motivate them and make them extremists ?” he asked.

“It is unfortunate that Singh, who served as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and now oversees party affairs in two states, made such irresponsible comments,” the minister said.

Reddy recalled that Singh had made some (undesirable) comments on the Army as well.

Singh, in-charge of Congress affairs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, kicked up a row yesterday with his remarks that the Telangana Police has set up a “bogus” ISIS website to radicalise Muslim youth and encourage them to join the terrorist outfit.

After being part of several blockbusters including KICK, BADLAPUR, BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN & RAEES, Nawazuddin Siddiqui will next be seen in filmmaker Kushan Nandy’s BABUMOSHAI BANDOOKBAAZ produced by Kiran Shyam Shroff & Ashmith Kunder under the banner, Movies By The Mob. While the gripping drama will see Nawazuddin play an action hero, director Kushan seems to be too impressed with the versatile actor’s performance. “You will see Nawaz’s astonishing range in this film. He is a fabulous actor, but in this film, he is a true blue hero. His character is endearing and has a lot of fun. But when he is brutal, he is extremely so,” informs Kushan. “Nawaz indulges in action for survival and also for love, friendship, rivalry & payback. The action consists mostly of hand – to – hand combat and Nawaz has had a few accidents while shooting those scenes. For the pre -climax scene of the film, we were shooting in a really narrow lane which had a very steep slope. It was barely 3 feet wide and there were a number of junior artists and the crew of the film present. The shot required Nawaz to run down the slope and slam open a door and barge into a house. And Nawaz insisted on keeping the door actually locked from inside. He put his entire force on the door and broke the lock and gave a brilliant shot. Bipasha Basu is all set to establish a self defense academy for women next year, which will include lessons in kickboxing, Krav Maga and other forms of combat training. The 3 – member pop rock band, which has lent music to Raveena Tandon’s Maatr, was to arrive in the country in the 2nd week of Apr, 2017 for song promotions. “Security is the primary issue. PRODUCER MUSHTAQ NADIADWALA SOON TO MAKE A FILM ON TAJAMUL ISLAM

Producer Mushtaq Nadiadwala is all set to make a biopic on the country’s youngest kickboxing World Champion, Tajamul Islam. The 8 years old had scripted history at the World Kickboxing Championship in Italy in Nov last year. The producer has acquired sole rights of her inspirational story. The
script of the prospective film on her life is a work in progress under the banner of MAN Films. “This movie will inspire the youth who wish to aspire for excellence, but are bound & constrained by their circumstances. Specifically, it will aim to break gender stereotyping and bring to light the greatness

Kashmir truck attack victim dies

New Delhi: The Election Commission has cancelled the Anantnag Lok Sabha bypoll, saying the ground situation is not conducive to hold free and fair elections.

The bypoll, earlier slated to be held on April 12, was postponed for May 25 due to poor law and order situation.

The Commission, which issued the order late last night, said non-availability of sufficient number of security personnel was another reason to cancel the poll process.

The 10-page order said a fresh date would be announced later.
