London blaze: Fasting Muslims helped save lives

London: Muslim residents observing Ramadan have been hailed as heroes after they helped save many sleeping neighbours from the horrific Grenfell Tower fire.

Residents who had stayed up for Sehri (pre-dawn meal) saw the inferno break out just before 1 a.m.

After sensing the smoke smell about an hour after midnight Tuesday, the fasting Muslims came out of their homes and began running around, frantically knocking on neighbours’ doors to wake them up, the Daily Mail reported on Thursday.

They were dubbed a “lifeline” in helping to get people out of their flats even as fire alarms and sprinklers failed to work in the west London block, the daily reported.

Khalid Suleman Ahmed, who lived on the eighth floor of Grenfell Tower, said: “No fire alarms went off and there were no warning. I was playing PlayStation waiting to eat suhuur when I smelt smoke.

“I got up and looked out of my window and saw the seventh floor smoking. I woke my auntie up, then got clothes on and started knocking on neighbours’ doors.”

Rashida, a resident, told Sky News how fasting Muslims may have saved lives in the tower block as many of them were awake.

“Most Muslims now observing Ramadan will normally not go to bed until about 2 a.m., maybe 2.30 a.m., when they have their late night last meal. They do their last prayer.

“So most of the families around here would have been awake,” she said.

Nadia Yousuf, 29, also said that Muslim residents were among the first to alert neighbours to the blaze as they woke up to prepare to break their fast.

A number of Islamic cultural centres and mosques like the Al-Manaar Mosque opened their doors to help those affected.

The nearby St. Clement’s and St. James’ church and local Sikh temples also opened their doors to people who were evacuated.

A woman near the scene told reporters: “If it wasn’t for all these young Muslim boys around here helping us coming from the mosque, a lot more people would have been dead.

“They were the first people with bags of water giving to people and helping, running and telling people.”

Andre Barroso, 33, told The Independent: “Muslims played a big part in getting a lot of people out. Most of the people I could see were Muslim. They have also been providing food and clothes.”

Twenty people are fighting for their lives in a critical condition with 78 people taken to six different hospitals across London.

Terribly Tiny Talkies is all set to release its very special short film Aamad on this Father’s Day 18th Jun, 2017. The film is written & directed by Neeraj Udhwani and stars Saqib Saleem, Arif Zakaria, Charu Rohatgi & Abeer Pandit.

In Urdu, the word Aamad means arrival. In Kathak Aamad is the initiation of spoken rhythms or “bol” which also herald the entry of the performer.

Aamad is the story of a father & a son and their shared inheritance of loss. An inheritance that tears them apart and yet binds them together.

Abhay returns home to find his father on his death bed. Old painful memories resurface. Will he be able to make amends for the faults of his past? As his father passes on, will this be Abhay’s rites of passage? Will Abhay heed the call of the bloodline, despite the tinkering strains of the past?

This is the 21st film which will be released by Terribly Tiny Talkies.

Director Neeraj Udhwani quotes his experience on making Aamad. “Aamad is at its essence a father son story. Most boys, during their teenage years, have a strained relationship with their father. I remember I had one. But when we grow up, we look back and realise how much our immature behavior must have hurt our parents. Though we seldom apologize. Aamad is the story of a son apologizing to his father and correcting the mistake of his boyhood before it gets too late.”

He continues, “For this short film, casting was very crucial. I needed an actor who looked masculine and yet would look graceful while performing kathak. My first choice was Saqib Saleem with whom I have previously worked on Mere Dad Ki Maruti, a film I had written. And to my good fortune, he agreed to do it after reading the script. He knew the film entailed him learning a bit of kathak which is a difficult dance to master. But Saqib rose up to the challenge and practiced it every day for hours & hours with the choreographer Ishita Sharma for many days until he got it right.”

He further adds, “For the father’s role, I needed a fine actor who had the physicality of a dancer. My casting director Shaarika suggested Arif Zakaria and again to my luck, he agreed. Charuji, another fine actor, came on board as the mother. And Abeer Pandit, an amazing discovery by my casting director, plays the younger version of Saqib.
I couldn’t have asked for better producers than Terribly Tiny Talkies (TTT) for this film. My sensibilities matched with Sharanya, Anuj & Chintan right from the first meeting. Also my co – producer Ishita Moitra Udhwani (starry – eyed films) for backing me right till the end and her strong belief in the story. I feel blessed that all the right people came together. Without them, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Actor Saqib Saleem shares his experience on working with Neeraj Udhwani :- “I know Neeraj for a while now as he wrote Mere Dad Ki Maruti and we meet often to discuss ideas. He shared the idea of Aamad with me and asked me what I thought. When I read it, I instantly fell in love with the story and I told him that he shouldn’t look for anyone else as I want to do it. It’s such a simple yet complex film as it speaks about the unsaid things in a father – son relationship.”

Top Malyalam hero Dulquer Salmaan is also popular among Tamil film buffs for his memorable performance in his Tamil debut film Vaayai Moodi Pesavum & director Mani Ratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani. Presently the proud son of Mammootty is acting as Gemini Ganesan, in the Tamil – Telugu biopic on Savitri. The charming Dulquer Salmaan has signed up for another Tamil film. This film will be directed by debutant Ra.Karthik. George C.Williams will be cinematographer while debutant Dheenadhayalan will be the music director. The film will be produced by J. Selvakumar of Kenanya Films banner. The shooting of the film is scheduled to begin soon. The title & other other cast & crew details of the project will be announced soon.

Rajinikanth’s Movie Kaala Karikaalan In Dispute

Chennai based producer K. Rajashekaran filed a petition against the makers of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Kaala Karikaalan alleging that the “title, knot & story of Kaala Karikaalan absolutely belonged” to his company GSR Vinmeen Creations. A city court on Friday issued a notice asking Rajinikanth, the makers of Kaala Karikaalan & also the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce to submit their replies by 15th Jun, 2017. K. Rajashekaran, owner of GSR Vinmeen Creations, said that the title Karikaalan was already registered by him with the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. He’s accused the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce of misusing the rules by not renewing his title registration to “favour some influential persons & disfavouring indigent persons”. Rajashekaran stated in his petition that he intended to make a film on Chola emperor Karikalan and that he had narrated the story to Rajinikanth Fans Association leader Sathyanarayana. Rajashekaran also said that another dispute over the film’s title was pending in the city civil court. Therefore, the producers are using the name illegally. Rajashekaran sought an interim injunction restraining the makers to shoot the film. Kaala Karikaalan is produced by Wonderbar Films & directed by Pa. Ranjith (helmer of Rajinikanth’s Kabali). Rajinikanth completed the 1st schedule of Kaala Karikaalan in Mumbai on 7th May, 2017 and returned to Chennai recently. Kaala Karikaalan features Huma Qureshi opposite Rajinikanth. Nana Patekar has been roped in for the antagonist’s role.

Suriya To Produce Brother Karthi’s Next Film

Suriya’s 2D Entertainment will produce his brother Karthi’s next yet untitled film under Pandiraj’s direction, it was announced recently. At the audio launch of G. V. Prakash Kumar starrer film Sema, Rajsekar Pandian on behalf of 2D Entertainment announced the project. “We are proud to announce that our next project will be with Karthi, and in the direction of Pandiraj,” Rajsekar told the media here. Suriya, who turned producer with his wife Jyotika starrer 36 Vayadhinile, is teaming up with his brother for the 1st time ever. Karthi is currently busy wrapping up an action thriller Dheeran Adhigaaram Ondru. The project with his brother is expected to start rolling later this year.

Nayanthara To Replace Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan who was supposed to play the titular character of a princess in Sangamitra has opted out of the project. Now the makers are on the look out for another top league heroine to play the part. Sources close to the unit revealed that talks are on with Nayanthara to play the Sangamitra character in the film. Karthi is presently shooting for Theeran Adhigaram Ondru directed by H. Vinoth of Sathurangavettai fame. But since the last half a decade female directors too have made their presence felt in this male dominated arena and tried to break the monopoly of the so called male directors. Not only these now this female directors have not only left a deep impression on the cine goer’s mind but also got a lot of appreciation for their par excellence directorial skills. And now one more name is being included in this long list of female directors named Payal Kashyap, who happens to be a fun loving & extremely bold person. She is all ready to take on the, behind the scenes, male director’s dominance. She is all excited to showcase her woman power. Incidentally speaking she had opened her directorial innings with a symbolically titled film Ganga Ki Pukar. At present she is busy giving finishing touches to her 5th directorial venture named Never Again Nirbhaya which is based on the most talked about Delhi Gang Rape case. What was the main reason of directing a film on the Nirbhaya Rape Case?

The main reason to make a film on this particular topic was that it was always facts that has appealed to me more than the fiction. Moreover the audience as well as myself feel more connected to each other when I end up making a realism oriented films. Besides in those days when the Nirbhaya incident had taken place I was busy shooting in Delhi itself for a documentary based on the life of the Late PM Rajiv Gandhi. At that time I saw Nirbhaya’s painful death every day due to the varied publications & news channel’s round the clock harping on the most cruel act which had happened with Nirbhaya. Her name was Nirbhaya (fearless) but she lived a very fearful life in her last days in the hospital bed and I could literally hear her weeping for almost a week. This incident had literally left me totally shaken & disturbed. In fact the entire nation was deeply moved. The incident was relived in every corner of our nation. So I felt that keeping this incident as a focal point I should make a hard hitting film with a very relevant social message. So that no other man, not even a stone hearted one with no feelings whatsoever, will ever dare to create such a cruel crime again. That apart it may finally bring a real justice to the family of the deceased Nirbhaya. Not ony this Never Again Nirbhaya will act as a soothing balm on the non – healing wounds of Nirbhaya’s family.

As our film Never Again Nirbhaya is totally based on a real story so I wanted to have a fresh pair for the lead cast. Hence I selected the ex – Miss. International Richa Sharma & Dinesh K. Mehta, who has acted in many small screen serials, as a lead pair. Besides them the film also stars Raju Shrestha, Shailendra Shrivastav, Pappu Polysater, Anil
Yadav, Gopal K. Singh, Ravi Kesari et al in pivotal roles. The credits of the film are story by Ramesh Chandra Jha, dialogues by A. M. Turaz, cimematography by Ajay Kashyap & Pawan Singh Rathore, lyrics by Vimal Kashyap, music by Rupesh Verma and above all the film has been produced by Bidisha Adhikari & Kanchan Adhikari. The film is all set to be released very soon.

Besides the important aspects of all my film is entertainment and through these varied stories I always want to say something. I immediately start making a film on the story that touches my heart totally. And as far as Society is concerned how can anyone forget that I am also a part of this same Society. So it is also my responsibility
to do something for my country & my society. You get entertained as long as you watch a film but you definitely take home the message conveyed through the film and it stays with you for a very, very long time.
And this aspect is the one that has a greater impact on Society.

Yes it is very much true. I am not only directing Butter Thief Production’s Kaal Bhairava but also enacting a cameo role in it. I personally think & believe that cinema does not have any language. I want to narrate stories, then be it any medium. And I also wish to state that I had initially started my filmic career as an actress of Bhojpuri Cinema. And then I turned my focus on direction by successfully wielding the megaphone for 3 hit Bhojpuri films. That apart I am also enacting a cameo role in Never Again Nirbhaya aka Nirbhaya Ka Insaaf which will ultimately prove to be a turning point of the film.

You are handling varied departments of filmmaking at the same time. But don’t you think it is risky & dangerous to sail in too many boats?

Of course anything can happen. It can so happened that the sole boat you are sailing in has a hole in it and you may get drowned. So those who do not dare to take a risk their life itself may become risky & dangerous. That’s the sole reason that I am daring to take a risk at each & every step of my life and I am also all ready to take one more risk by turning a producer.

What do you enjoy most directing or acting?

I get a special feeling while directing a film. Frankly speaking I feel that directing a film is more creative than acting in a film. But again I would like to state today whatever I have achieved is only because of acting which is omnipresent in my blood. This only has given me recognition in the first place.

Why do you direct mostly female oriented films?

If you glance at the 100 year old history of Indian Cinema than you fill find that writers & filmmakers have always presented woman as a weak character almost like a down trodden “Abla Naari”. Even today barring a chosen few films an Indian actress is always presented as a stereotyped showpiece. Whereas today’s woman are nothing less than a man in any arena of work.
Goverment also talks about giving 50% reservation for half of the population. But Indian Cinema is still stuck in the same situation. So I think someone has to make a start. I want that Nadia’s hunter should rule the roost again resoundlingly on the celluloid silver screen that too in the Dolby Sound Sytem.

So what next after Never Again Nirbhaya?

Right now I doing one film for Rising Film Cooperation. No wonder this film will also be totally woman oriented. Through the medium of film I am trying to focus and bring to the forefront the varied problems of human trafficking. And then one more film named Shootout Of Azamgarh’s production work is going on. That apart I recently bagged the “Best Supporting Actress” award & “Best Director” award in Mumbai, Stree Shakti Sammaan 2016 on 31st Jul, 2016 and above all Fatima Begum Shikhar Samman (Jharkhand, Ranchi).

Gujarat textbook calls Jesus ‘devil’, Cong dubs it ‘shame to India’

Itanagar: The blunder in a Gujarat government school text book referring to Jesus Christ as ‘haivaan’ (devil) has brought shame to India, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Takam Sanjoy said on Wednesday.

This was particularly shameful as Gujarat was the land of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sanjoy told PTI.

He called for immediate remedial steps to assuage the hurt sentiment of Indians, particularly the Christian community.

The class IX Hindi language textbook published by the Gujarat State School Textbook Board has used ‘haivaan’ (devil) before Jesus Christ, instead of the intended word ‘bhagwan’ (God) in one of its chapters, which triggered protests from Christians.

The board has removed the controversial word in the online version of the book available on its website.

Sanjoy also lauded Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh Governor P B Acharya for writing to his Gujarat counterpart Om Prakash Kohli about this issue.

SC notice to Centre on order banning cattle trade for slaughter

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today sought response from the Centre on pleas challenging its controversial notification banning the sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter.

A vacation bench comprising Justices R K Agrawal and S K Kaul issued notice to the Centre and asked it to file response within two weeks on two separate petitions challenging the notification.

The apex court fixed the matter for hearing on July 11.

Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that intention behind bringing the notification was to have a regulatory regime on cattle trade across the country.

He also told the apex court that the Madras High Court has recently granted interim stay on the notification.

One of the petitioners, who has approached the apex court challenging the notification, has claimed in his plea that the provisions in the notification were unconstitutional as they violated the fundamental rights including freedom of conscience and religion and right to livelihood.

The Centre had on May 26 banned the sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter through an Environment Ministry notification — ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017’ under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Non-bailable warrant issued against Baba Ramdev in ‘beheading remark’ case

Rohtak: A court here today issued a non-bailable warrant against yoga guru Ramdev in a case over his remarks made last year against those refusing to raise the slogan of ‘Bharat mata ki jai’.

The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Harish Goyal issued the NBW against Ramdev and fixed August 3 as the next date of hearing in the case.

On May 12, the court had issued a bailable warrant against Ramdev. “The order follows Ramdev’s failure to appear before the court yet again today. He also failed to appear despite summons and a bailable warrant,” counsel for the complainant in the case O P Chugh said.

Ramdev had made the remarks at a Sadbhawana Sammelan here in April last year, which was called to promote peace in the city that witnessed violence during the Jat quota stir. He had said that but for the rule of law he would have “beheaded” lakhs of people for refusing to chant ‘Bharat mata ki jai’.

On March 2, Goyal had issued summons to Ramdev after a complaint was filed by Congress leader and former Haryana minister Subhash Batra seeking registration of an FIR against the yoga guru.

The ACJM had then directed Ramdev to furnish Rs 1 lakh personal surety during the execution of warrant and also to appear in court on June 14.

Bengaluru worst city for senior citizens in India, says survey

New Delhi: Nearly 1 in every 2 elderly people faced abuse in public spaces across India and Delhi was among the least abusive cities, a report by HelpAge India has claimed.

According to the report, ‘How India treats its elderly’, 23 per cent of the elderly in the national capital faced abuse as against 70 per cent in Bangalore, which recorded the maximum abuse, followed by 60 per cent in Hyderabad, 59 per cent in Guwahati, 52 per cent in Kolkata, 49 per cent in Chennai and 33 per cent in Mumbai.

The national average was 44 per cent.

“We had conversations with more than 4,000 people in different cities across the country. They have shared their stories of discrimination in society. From pushing and ignoring to misbehaving with them, there have been horrific incidents which elderly people have gone through,” says Manjira Khurana, the Country Head-Communication and Advocacy of HelpAge India.

Noting that mistreatment of the elderly in public spaces was “inexcusable”, the report that was released here today, also features first-hand accounts of the rampant abuse faced by senior citizens in public transport, hospitals and malls.

Sixteen per cent of those who travel by public bus mention incidents of misbehaviour by bus conductor, while 17 per cent of mall staff is reported to have behaved badly with the elderly.

Columnist and author Santosh Desai termed the findings of the data “alarming” and said that improving the behaviour of people toward the elderly was one of the primary steps towards achieving a progressive society.

“The most disturbing thing is that we have made an image of ourselves that we respect elders. Whereas the reality on the ground is somewhat different. You can’t quote the growth of GDP as the only contributing factor to make a progressive society. Improvement of people plays an important role and unfortunately, this is not happening,” said Desai.

Quoting several people who feel threatened to even move out of their homes due to experiences of abuse, the report notes how many feel stepping out as a “necessary evil”.

An awareness drive among the youth was also conducted.

“During our campaigns, we talked to youth about this problem. They agree that they are aware of such incidents but most of them refrain from intervening when they come across such situations,” Khurana said.

Talking about the importance of the research report, Mathew Cherian, CEO of HelpAge India, says, “Elderly abuse is a sensitive topic. Over the past few years, we have been studying and researching elderly abuse within closed doors of one’s home.

“We have surveyed the elders as well as the youth perspective. This year we have moved out of the home into the broader area of public space.”
