18,760 dengue cases reported in India; Kerala tops, 1,945 in Karnataka

July 4, 2017 by Nasheman

dengue

New Delhi: Over 18,700 cases of dengue have been reported in the country this year, with the Health Ministry attributing early onset of monsoon as one of the factors for spurt in cases ahead of the vector-borne disease season.

The maximum number of cases have been reported in Kerala with 9,104 followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,174 till July 2.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda today held a review meet on preparedness for vector-borne diseases here, which was attended by Health Secretary C K Mishra, Director General of ICMR Soumya Swaminathan, senior officials of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) and other institutions.

“We held two reviews, one for Delhi and the other for rest of the states and UTs. And, I can say that we are satisfied with our preparedness. We have already held three video-conferences on this matter and issued 13 advisories. The Secretary (Health) will soon hold video conferences with other states,” Nadda told reporters after the meet.

Secretary Mishra said Kerala is battling a multiple onslaught of dengue, malaria and other such diseases due to early arrival of monsoon.

“We had already sent a team there and it has come back after assessing the situation. But, no request has come from Kerala side on this matter. The state has a robust health mechanism though,” he said.

Mishra added that many of these reported cases include suspected ones too, so the final confirmed cases tally would only come by the year end, after the season ends.

According to to the figures provided by the ministry, Karnataka has reported 1,945 cases, Gujarat 616, Andhra Pradesh 606 and West Bengal 469, among other states, till July 2.

The number of dengue cases recorded in Delhi has touched nearly 100, with 44 of the infection cases diagnosed here being traced to other states.

As many as 10,952 chikungunya cases have also been reported in the country till July 2. Karnataka has recorded highest number of cases with 4047.

mandana-karimi

Mandana Karimi (ex – Big Boss fame) is all over the news and not for the right reasons. The actress who got married to her boyfriend, Gaurav Gupta on 25th Jan, 2015, has filed a divorce petition against him.

Looks like things didn’t go as romantically as we thought they would. The actress has also filed a domestic violence case against her husband & her in – laws claiming that Gaurav Gupta barred her from entering their house 7 weeks back. The actress filed the petition yesterday.

She has also filed a complaint against her mother – in – law for harassment and has made demands of monetary reliefs in the petition.

In a recent interaction with members of the fourth estate she averred, “I was thrown out of my matrimonial house 7 weeks ago. I made desperate attempts to reconcile with them, but my in – laws didn’t allow me back. Gaurav Gupta has totally cut me off.”

The actress also mentioned that she was forced to quit her acting career since it was ‘demeaning as per the family status in the society’.

Both Manadana Karimi and Gaurav Gupta were dating each other for 2 years before they decided to tie the knot and it was a very romantic wedding, which is why one is quite taken aback to hear about their divorce so soon. Though Mandana Karimi or her lawyer hasn’t revealed anything more, Mandana Karimi has made a total of 3 allegations against her husband in her divorce petition.

Will have to take military way if India doesn’t listen, warns China

July 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Chinas flag

Beijing: China would be forced to use a “military way” to end the standoff in the Sikkim sector if India “refuses to listen” to it, a Chinese expert has warned.

As the standoff at the Doklam area continued for the third week, the longest between the two countries, the official media and the think-tanks here have said that “war is possible if the conflict between India and China is not handled properly”.

“China is trying its best to use historical lessons to reason with India and show sincerity in peacefully solving the problem, but if India refuses to listen, then China would have no other choice than to use a military way of solving the problem,” Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the state-run Global Times.

Hu claimed that India is provoking China because it wanted to prove to the US that it could contain China while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the US.

But Hu said Trump was not like his predecessor Barack Obama.

“Obama believes India is important only because they share the same values, but Trump is very pragmatic, and he doesn’t treat India as a valuable ally because New Delhi is too weak to confront Beijing,” Hu opined.

Although India always treats China as its biggest rival, China does not think so as India lags far behind China, Song Zhongping, a Beijing-based military expert, was quoted as saying by the daily.

“Experts also scoffed at India’s military threat after Indian Defense Minister Arun Jaitely asserted on Friday that the India of 2017 is different from what it was in 1962,” said the report in the daily, known for its nationalist stance.

“The gap between the militaries of China and India today is even bigger than in 1962, and I hope India can keep calm for its own good,” Hu said.

Since the standoff on June 6, when the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) destroyed bunkers of the India Army claiming the area belonged to China, Chinese media have carried several pieces warning India for escalating border tension and “reminding” the Indian Army about the 1962 war.

Of the 3,488-km-long India-China border from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, a 220-km section falls in Sikkim.

In an US study of 31 patients, Tc 99m tilmanocept exhibited high specificity for identification of cancer affected lymph nodes, ensuring accurate staging and treatment of patients. In another study of 148 patients, Tc 99m tilmanocept identified more cancer affected lymph nodes per patient than conventional method of staining with vital blue dye. This targeted detection of higher number of lymph nodes, ensures precise staging of disease and appropriate therapy of patients. Cancer of the head and neck is a dreaded disease in India affecting approximately 160,000 patients every year. Currently Elective Neck Dissection (END) is the gold standard for assessment of spread of tumor to lymph nodes in patients with head and neck cancer. In a study of 101 head and neck cancer patients in the US, Tc 99m tilmanocept provided a high Negative Predictive Value (NPV), identifying correctly the lymph nodes that were free of cancer. This means, Tc 99m tilmanocept can be used to assess cancer spread in head and neck cancer patients, sparing the potential morbidity associated with END and offer better QOL (Quality of Life) to these patients.”

Global Direct Selling Industry clocked USD 183 Billion in retail sales, says World Federation of Direct Selling Associations Report

July 3, 2017 by Nasheman

World Federation of Direct Selling Associations

New Delhi: Even as online shopping is fast catching up and large malls are offering multibrand retail variety to customers, the traditional and oldest method of direct selling is also entrenching itself in the market place. According to a recently published report of the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations, the retail sales of the Direct Selling Industry stood at USD 183 billion globally. The Asia Pacific region was the highest contributor with as much as 46 per cent of sales coming from this region.

The US was in the second spot with 33 per cent of the sales while Europe brought in 20 per cent. Africa and the Middle East were the lowest in terms of retails sales with just about 1 per cent of the global sales coming from that region. Total retail sales of USD 183 billion in 2016 were up 1.9 per cent from the previous year and have been growing at a healthy pace of 5.20 per cent.

In 2016 the total retail sales reported by the Asia Pacific region stood at USD 83.75 billion up 1.10 per cent from the previous year. The industry has been growing at a 3-year CAGR of 6.70 per cent in this region. The potential of the Indian market can be gauged from the numbers as the Direct Selling industry in India is close to USD 1.18 billion. Also, as per the report, among the various categories of goods that the industry sells, Wellness occupies the top slot, contributing to 35 per cent of the total sales. This is closely followed by Cosmetics & Personal Care which bring in 35 per cent of the sales, while Household Goods & Durables account for 12 per cent. Other categories such as Clothing & Accessories, Home Care, Utilities, Financial Services and others bring in the rest.

Considering this trend, a lot of companies are now expected to launch their products in the Indian market, especially in the wellness and the cosmetics and personal care categories. Existing companies such QNet have already braced themselves up for the bright future that they see and have already began launching new products. The industry also holds a good position on one more important parameter – the number of entrepreneurs that it has been successful in creating over the years. The total number of independent representatives registered globally in this industry stand at a little above 10 crore as of 2016 while there are more than 40 lakh Indians who have embraced this industry as a source of living. The large number of employable population that India produces calls for huge number of employment generation or creating opportunities for self employment.

The Direct Selling Industry with its capability is a likely solution to this problem. This billion-dollar industry has been growing in India despite various issues ranging from a widely misconstrued business model to lack of a proper regulatory framework. Various multinational direct selling companies that set up shop in India have had their fair share of run-ins with the law.

‘The lack of a proper regulatory authority to oversee the business of direct selling companies in India led to many complaints. Despite some difficulties, we are quite upbeat about India. In fact QNet will be launching new products in the Indian market over the next three to four months. These health and personal care products have done extremely well in global markets. We are launching these products in India with locally sourced ingredients.” said Trevor Kuna, global CEO of QNet elaborating on the future plans of the company.

The Direct Selling Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs have paved the way for a more structured and disciplined business environment for companies. The government’s move towards implementing the GST Act will further help companies in India. The industry expects clarity in policy for it and with the steps taken by the Ministry to facilitate ‘Ease of doing business’ and MNCs will start putting India on their investment map. QNet has already committed an additional investments of Rs. 300 crs in the next 5 years and is launching 8-10 new products in the current year.

Gulf crisis: Qatar FM in Kuwait to respond to demands

Response will be the focus of a meeting on Wednesday between ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and UAE.

by Al Jazeera

Qatar has delivered its response to a list of 13 demands from Saudi Arabia and three other Arab countries that cut have ties with it and imposed a land, air and sea embargo amid a major diplomatic crisis.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s foreign minister, was received by Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah on Monday to hand over a letter from Qatar’s emir, according to state-run Kuwait News Agency.

Kuwait is mediating in the dispute. The content of the letter has not been released.

Qatar’s response will be the focus of a gathering in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Wednesday of foreign ministers from the four blockading countries: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

Al Jazeera’s Saad al-Saeedi, reporting from Kuwait City, said there was “a sense of relief, tinged with caution” in Kuwait.

“Qatar’s response to the demands was handed to the emir, followed by an extensive meeting between the Qatari foreign minister and his Kuwaiti counterpart for more than one and half hours. After that, the Qatari foreign minister headed to the emir of Kuwait’s residence to attend another meeting over lunch before his departure,” he said.

“The meetings reflect Kuwait’s intense activity at the highest levels, from the emir down. Some sources suggest that the Kuwaiti foreign minister will join the four countries meeting in Cairo on Wednesday,” Saeedi said.

“It is clear that a breakthrough is being achieved; that some of the demands could be addressed.”

‘Different strategy required’

The four countries severed diplomatic ties with Qatar and imposed sanctions on it on June 5, accusing it of supporting “terrorism”. The allegation has been rejected by Doha as “baseless”.

After more than two weeks, the four countries gave Doha 10 days, or until Sunday night, to comply with a 13-point demand list in exchange for the end of the anti-Qatar measures.

The demands included that Qatar shut down the Al Jazeera Media Network, close a Turkish military base and scale down ties with Iran.

Sultan Barakat, director of the Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies at the Doha Institute, said it had become clear that the initial action by the Saudi-led group had not been effective.

“The fact that most international capitals have not supported the move is a very good indication to Saudi Arabia and UAE that a different strategy is now required,” he told Al Jazeera.

“The best way forward is to go back to the Gulf council and tackle the issue from within the arrangement and framework that exists.”

Qatar’s foreign minister has already said that Doha would not meet the demands, saying the list “was meant to be rejected”.

Speaking on Saturday, the foreign minister said Doha offered instead “a proper condition for a dialogue” to resolve the Gulf crisis.

US President Donald Trump spoke separately with leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi late on Sunday.

He “underscored that unity in the region is critical to accomplishing the Riyadh summit’s goals of defeating terrorism and promoting regional stability”, the White House said.

Disability tax under GST ‘insensitive’: Rahul Gandhi

July 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today accused the Modi government of being “insensitive” towards the most vulnerable sections of society by imposing “disability tax” on wheelchairs and Braille typewriters, and demanded its full rollback.

The GST on Braille typewriters and papers, carriages for the disabled and wheelchairs and other assistive devices have been fixed at rates varying between 5 to 18 per cent.

“GST on disability aids like wheelchairs and Braille typewriters, once again shows this government’s complete insensitivity towards our most vulnerable.

“Congress Party demands a full roll back of this ‘disability tax’ that will put millions of our disabled people through further hardship,” he said on Twitter.

The Congress party also put out a picture showing imposition of GST on wheelchairs and Braille paper.

“By hastily rolling out GST, Modi Govt has abandoned those who need its support the most. #GSTTamasha,” said a tweet put out by the party on its handle.
