Trump slaps travel ban on Chad, North Korea, Venezuela

September 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Critics have accused the president of discriminating against Muslims in violation of US guarantees of religious liberty.

by Al Jazeera

President Donald Trump slapped new travel restrictions on citizens from North Korea, Venezuela and Chad, expanding the list of countries covered by his original travel bans that have been derided by critics as targeting Muslims.

Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia were left on the list of affected countries in a new proclamation issued by the president on Sunday. Restrictions on citizens from Sudan were lifted.

“We cannot afford to continue the failed policies of the past, which present an unacceptable danger to our country,” Trump said in statement. “My highest obligation is to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and in issuing this new travel order, I am fulfilling that sacred obligation.”

Iraqi citizens will not be subject to travel prohibitions but will face enhanced scrutiny or vetting.

The current ban, enacted in March, was set to expire on Sunday evening.

The new restrictions, slated to take effect on October 18, resulted from a review after Trump’s original travel bans sparked international outrage and legal challenges.

Unlike the first ban – which sparked chaos at airports across the country – officials said they had been working for months on the new rules, in collaboration with various agencies and in conversation with foreign governments.

The addition of North Korea and Venezuela broadens the restrictions from the original, mostly Muslim-majority list.

Critics have accused the president of discriminating against Muslims in violation of constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and equal protection under the law, breaking existing US immigration law and stoking religious hatred.

Trump had called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” during his election campaign.

Speaking on background, government officials said the addition of North Korea and Venezuela demonstrated the measure was set on the basis of security and was not a “Muslim ban”, as detractors have argued.

“Religion, or the religious origin of individuals or nations, was not a factor,” a senior government official told reporters.

“The inclusion of those countries, Venezuela and North Korea, was about the fact that those governments are simply not compliant with our basic security requirements.”

Rights group Amnesty International USA condemned the new measures.

“Just because the original ban was especially outrageous does not mean we should stand for yet another version of government-sanctioned discrimination,” it said in a statement. “It is senseless and cruel to ban whole nationalities of people who are often fleeing the very same violence that the US government wishes to keep out. This must not be normalised.”

The American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement the addition of North Korea and Venezuela “doesn’t obfuscate the real fact that the administration’s order is still a Muslim ban”.

The National Iranian American Council (NIAC) denounced the new proclamation as “nothing but an extension of the same discrimatory policy first rolled out in January”.

“The Trump administration has now taken steps to make its Muslim ban targeting Iranians and other nationals permanent,” NIAC said in statement.

“Absent additional intervention from the courts, and a long-overdue intervention from the Republican-controlled Congress, the Trump administration will cement a racist and discriminatory campaign promise into official US policy.”

The Supreme Court will hear arguments on October 10 on whether the current ban discriminates against Muslims in violation of the US Constitution, as lower courts previously ruled.

Now the nine-justice court could skip deciding the case altogether, legal experts said.

With the travel restrictions expiring, the court has an easy way out because it could simply say the case is no longer a live issue and therefore, in legal parlance, moot.

“If the court can avoid entering into the fray, that may be appealing to them,” said Anil Kalhan, an immigration law professor at Drexel University School of Law.

India beat Aus by 5 wkts to clinch ODI series, grab No. 1 spot

September 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Indore: All-rounder Hardik Pandya rose to the occasion yet again with a fluent 78-run knock as India registered a comfortable five-wicket win over Australia in the third ODI to grab the number one spot, here today. Chasing 294 for a win, India overhauled the target with 13 balls to spare in front of a packed Holkar stadium to take a series-clinching 3-0 lead.

Openers Rohit Sharma (71) and Ajikya Rahane (70) set the platform for the win with their 131-run partnership while Pandya steered the side to victory with his crucial knock, which came off 72 balls. Australia opener Aaron Finch’s fluent century came to a nought due to self-destructive batting by Australia in the last 10 overs.

Finch, playing his first game of the series, had placed Australia at a commanding 232 for two in 40 overs with his 124-run innings but they lost plot after that. When they could have gone for a kill and a score in the vicinity of 350, all Australia could manage was just 59 runs and lost four wickets to settle for 293 for six.

India faced a few anxious moments in their run chase after losing the set openers along with captain Virat Kohli (28) and Kedar Jadhav (2) but Pandya, who had played crucial role in India’s win in the series-opener in Chennai, ensured there were no more hiccups.

He kept Australia under pressure with his confident batting as he not only rotated the strike comfortably but also smacked four sixes off Ashton Agar to keep the run-rate under control. Pandya found a good partner in Manish Pandey (36) as they went about their business calmly and shared a 78-run stand for the fifth wicket.

The win meant that India have maintained their unbeaten run in Indore and have now recorded sixth consecutive ODI series win since June 2016. India, already number one in the Test format, replaced South Africa at the top of ODI ranking table by taking their tally to 120 points, one more than the Proteas.

Rohit subdued Australia with his punishing knock on a flat track, which had nothing for the bowlers. His knock was studded with six fours and four sixes. Hitting sixes was no big deal for Rohit, who smashed the Australian pace trio of Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Kane Richardson with equal ease.

He raised his fifty with a six off left-arm spinner Agar. Rahane kept rotating strike and also hit Marcus Stoinis for three boundaries in a single over. Rohit was dropped on 67 by stumper Peter Handscomb off Cummins but could not make full use of the chance and soon miscued one from Coulter-Nile to be caught by Hilton Cartwright at deep mid-wicket.

Cummins ended Rahane’s innings by trapping him LBW to bring two new batsmen — skipper Kohli and Pandya — on the crease. India were cruising at that stage but quick dismissals of Kohli and Jadhav infused some life into the match.

Earlier, exploiting a flat Holkar track, Finch added 70 runs for the opening wicket with David Warner (42) and raised a 154-run partnership with captain Steve Smith (63) for the second wicket. Indian bowlers, who were largely ineffective till the dismissal of Finch, began to dictate terms towards the end. Smith and Glenn Maxwell (5) frittered away a brilliant opportunity to keep the series alive.

Making an instant impact in his first game of the series, Finch responded to the SOS call from the visitors with a class knock after skipper Smith won the toss and elected to bat. Finch, who replaced young Hilton Cartright after recovering from a calf injury, decorated his eighth ODI century with 12 fours and five sixes.

His footwork was impeccable and he rendered the stock balls of both the spinners ineffective, hitting four of his five sixes on ‘googlies’. A docile pitch to deal with, Indian bowlers hardly troubled the Australians as wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav (2/75) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/54) largely remained ineffective.

Finch’s dominance against Kuldeep was clear from the fact that he creamed off 41 runs from 26 balls he faced from the Chinaman. However, the hosts staged a remarkable comeback in the last 10 overs of the game. It all started in the last ball of the 38th over when Finch lofted Kuldeep to Kedar Jadhav at deep-midwicket.

Yadav saw the back of Smith, caught at long-off, while Chahal had Maxwell stumped. Bumrah got rid of Travis Head (4) and Peter Handscomb (3), leaving Australia in tatters. They could never get the fillip, which was there for them to take after a stupendous start even as Marcus Stoinis took the side close to 300-run mark with his unbeaten 27.

Notorious Prisoner Charles Bronson Wants Actor Tom Hardy To Father His Child

Notoriuos Prisoner Charles Bronson recently revealed that he wants actor Tom Hardy to father his child. In a letter to his friend, one of Britain’s most infamous criminals has revealed that he’s feeling broody. But, seeing as he’s a notoriously violent prisoner, and has never been permitted conjugal visits at Wakefield jail, West Yorkshire, he wants hunky Hollywood actor Tom Hardy to impregnate his soon – to – be wife Paula Williamson. Charles Bronson, who has been in prison for 43 years, told a friend in a letter: “The powers that be seem to think I can’t have a baby with my wife Paula. But you know… I always come up with something special. Maybe a surrogate daddy. If Tom Finland says yes, I think it’s got to be him. Get a meet with Tom Finland. See what he thinks. I think Paula would go with that choice. I’ll be discussing it with my wife Paula. It will be nice for her to have a baby to keep her happy while she awaits my freedom. Yeah, Paula would probably be alright with having Tom Hardy’s baby.”
Charles may have chosen to bestow the honor of “surrogate daddy” on Tom Finland due to the actor’s stellar portrayal of him in the 2009 film Bronson, which was based on his life. But Charles also stated that if Tom doesn’t fancy donating some sperm, then he’ll settle for EastEnders star & cockney legend Danny Dyer. He said in the letter: “I know Danny Dyer would be up for it.”

Danny Dyer will be thrilled, no doubt.

Actress Chloe Grace Moretz Confuses Scotland & Ireland

American actress Chloe Grace Moretz had a wee mix up when it came to knowing her Irish musical instruments from her Scottish ones. Chloe Grace Moretz recently took to Twitter to gush over the gorgeous sound of Ireland’s #1 wind instrument from her room.
And fans were quick to point out to Chloe that bagpipes are actually an instrument most closely associated with Scotland:

But some sticklers were keen to point out that bagpipes are also an Irish instrument because they’re both Celtic. Highland pipes may be more famous, but the Irish have actually had bagpipes for centuries. You’ve heard them in movie soundtracks. Whilst Chloe Grace Moretz is listening to the sweet sound of bagpipes in Ireland – or is it Scotland? Let’s just say The UK boyfriend Brooklyn Beckham posted some pics to show that he’s missing her oh – so much. He even uploaded a black & white photo to his Instagram of the 2 of them, and captioned it: “These nights are my favourite. Missing my girl”. The 2 were first seen out together in Aug, 2017, sparking rumors that they had rekindled their relationship.

Is Rapper Tupac Shakur alive?

There’s a theory that Rapper Tupac Shakur never died following the 1996 shooting.
Tupac Shakur’s death is still one of the biggest mysteries in showbiz, with his killers still unknown 21 years on. The rap legend was shot in Las Vegas in Sept, 1996 while standing out of the sunroof of the car he was in with Suge Knight. Tupac Shakur was shot twice in the chest, once in the arm & once in the thigh, and he died 6 days later in hospital from internal bleeding… or did he?

There’s a huge conspiracy theory surrounding Tupac Shakur‘s death, claiming that the rapper didn’t die at all, but is alive & well and living in Cuba. It may seem a tad far – fetched, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the star, real name Lesane Paris Crooks, didn’t perish in Nevada.

Anyone who believes that Tupac Shakur faked his own death’ theory can find plenty of sketchy details about the Las Vegas shooting. Firstly – 14 shots were fired and none of them hit Suge Knight, with seems a tad weird. Tupac Shakur’s bodyguard was supposed to be with the 2 stars, but at the last minute, Tupac Shakur told him to drive with his girlfriend instead. And while the rapper usually wore a bulletproof vest after being shot 2 years prior, but wasn’t wearing one on that night. Suge Knight doubts that Tupac Shakur is dead. Then, the coroner listed Tupac Shakur’s height as being 72 inches, or 6ft, and his weight as 215 pounds – while his driver’s license identified him as 5’10 & 168 pounds. Tupac Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur added further fuel to the fire by saying: “In the end, he chose to leave quietly.” What is quietly? Out a window?

Suge Knight himself also doubts that the rapper actually died. In a documentary due to air soon, Knight, who is currently awaiting trial for a separate murder, said: “When I left that hospital, me & Tupac Shakur were laughing & joking. So I don’t see how somebody could turn from doing well to doing bad.” Then again there’s the strange fact that the person who cremated Tupac Shakur’s body retired afterwards and hasn’t been seen since.

The cause of his death is being investigated by law enforcement officials, although Los Angeles coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter has confirmed that drug paraphernalia & alcohol were found in Cuba Gooding Sr’s car. Ram Rahim Singh approaches HC, challenges CBI court order

September 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Chandigarh: Jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, challenging a special CBI court’s verdict sentencing him to 20 years in prison for raping two disciples.

The CBI court in Panchkula on August 28 had sentenced Ram Rahim to 20 years in prison after his conviction.

“We have filed an appeal today in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Through this, we have challenged the order of the CBI court,” defence counsel Vishal Garg Narwana said here.

He said the CBI verdict has been challenged on several grounds.

“One of the grounds was that there was a delay of more than six years in recording the statements of the women (victims) by the CBI after the incident,” the defence counsel said.

The CBI had claimed that the two women followers were sexually exploited in 1999 and the agency recorded their statement in 2005, Garg said.

He alleged that the CBI had also concealed some portion of the victims’ statement.

Ram Rahim was convicted by the special CBI court on August 25, following which violence and arson had erupted in Panchkula and Sirsa districts which left 41 people dead and scores of injured.

The judge pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two rapes that date back to 2002.

The controversial sect head is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak district of Panchkula.

In April 2002, an anonymous letter was written to the then chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, complaining about the alleged sexual exploitation of woman followers at the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in Sirsa.

In May 2002, the high court directed the Sirsa district and session judge to probe the allegations in the letter. In September 2002, the high court handed over the matter to the CBI after the district court indicated the possibility of sexual exploitation

In December 2002, the CBI registered a case of rape, criminal intimidation against Ram Rahim.

The CBI filed a charge sheet against the Dera head in Ambala court in July 2007. The charge sheet mentioned the sexual exploitation of two ‘sadhvis’ between 1999 and 2001.

In September 2008, the special CBI court framed charges of rape and criminal intimidation against Ram Rahim.

Crackdown on BHU students: Two police officials removed

September 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Varanasi: The Uttar Pradesh government today removed three additional city magistrates and two policemen in connection with the baton-charge on students in the Banaras Hindu University during a protest over an alleged eve-teasing incident.

Station Officer of Lanka Police Station Rajiv Singh has been removed and sent to police lines. Station officer of Jaitpura Police Station Sanjiv Mishra has been posted in his place, police officials said.

Also the Circle Officer of Bhelupur, Nivesh Katiyar has been removed and Circle Officer of Kotwali Ayodhya Prasad Singh posted in his place.

A release from Varanasi’s District Information office said three additional city magistrates, Manoj Kumar Singh, Sushil Kumar Gaund and Jagdamma Prasad Singh have also been removed.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in a lathi-charge by the police in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where a protest on Saturday night against an alleged eve-teasing incident turned violent.

The violence erupted after some students, protesting against the incident on Thursday, wanted to meet the varsity’s vice chancellor at his residence.

Security guards of the university stopped the students and informed the police, according to university sources.

A BHU spokesperson had said that some students wanted to “forcibly” enter the VC’s residence but they were stopped by the BHU security guards.

Subsequently, there was stone pelting by “outsiders” who had joined the students, he said.

The police baton charged the students in a bid to disperse them. A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in the lathi-charge.

The police sources said some of its personnel were injured in the clashes during which the students allegedly indulged in arson.

Following the violence, the district administration has declared holidays from today till October 2 in all colleges and universities in Varanasi. The BHU had earlier announced that the holidays would start from September 28.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sought a report from the divisional commissioner about the incident as various political parties, including the Samajwadi Party (SP), criticised the government and condemned the police action.

“I have sought a report from the divisional commissioner, Varanasi, about the entire incident,” Adityanath said in Lucknow yesterday.

The baton charge on journalists led to protests in Lucknow with some scribes staging a sit-in near the chief minister’s residence. They later submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate demanding action against the guilty.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, “The government should resolve the issue by talks, not by lathi-charge. It is condemnable. Action should be taken against the guilty.”

Congress leaders Raj Babbar and P L Punia, along with scores of party activists, were detained yesterday when they tried to visit the BHU. They were later released.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP over the police lathi-charge allegedly on women students.

Attaching a link to a video of the students who alleged that they were beaten up by male policemen at the campus, Gandhi had tweeted, “BJP version of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in BHU.”

The BHU had issued a statement saying that the ‘dharna’ by the students just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit was “politically motivated” to malign the image of the university.

The alleged eve-teasing incident had occurred on Thursday night after which the students started the protest.

The university also said that security guards were regularly patrolling the campus and assistance from the police had been seeking to maintain peace in the campus.

Nearly 1,500 police personnel, including contingents of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), have been deployed to maintain law and order on the campus.

BHU students said that they undertook the protest near the university’s main gate against rising incidents of alleged eve-teasing on the campus.

A woman student of the Arts Faculty was allegedly harassed by three motorcycle-borne men inside the campus while she was returning to her hostel, triggering the dharna.

According to the complainant, the men abused her and fled when she resisted their attempts.

The woman alleged that security guards, about 100 metres from where the incident happened, did nothing to stop them.

She said her warden, instead of taking up the issue with her superiors, asked her why was she was returning late to the hostel.

The warden’s response angered the students who sat on a ‘dharna’ at the main gate midnight Thursday.

BHU students have alleged they have to face eve-teasers on the campus regularly and the varsity administration was not taking any action to stop the miscreants.

Bengaluru: Tax raids on Cafe Coffee Day find Rs 650 crore concealed income

September 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Income Tax Department raids on Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) retail chain since Thursday found Rs 650 crore concealed income from the documents seized, said an official on Sunday.

“Documents seized from the search operations at 25 places of Cafe Coffee Day and its group companies in Karnataka, Mumbai and Chennai have revealed concealed income of over Rs 650 crore,” a senior tax official told IANS here.

The search and seize operations, which began on September 21, concluded on Sunday evening in the offices of the group involved in coffee, tourism, IT and other areas.

“The searches concluded with the group’s officials admitting to concealed income exceeding Rs 650 crore and the detection of undisclosed income, which is expected to be a much higher figure,” said another tax official in an e-mail to IANS.

The offices and residence of CCD’s founder owner V G Siddhartha and its other officials in Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Mysuru across Karnataka were also searched during the last four days. Siddhartha is the elder son-in-law of former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, who was also Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 but earlier this year left the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“There are a number of other issues, including violations of other statutes on which there is no disclosure but relevant evidence has been found. These will be pursued effectively as part of our investigation,” added the official in the e-mail.

The raids were conducted under the directions and supervision of the Income Tax Department’s Investigation Cell Director-General B.R. Balakrishnan.

The corporate office of the Amalgamated Bean Coffee (ABC) Trading Company, which runs the CCD’s retail outlets across the country, its branch offices at Chikkamagaluru, Mudigere and Sakeleshpur in Karnatakas’ Malnad region were also searched during the exercise.

“Though we have found and seized a number of documents related to properties, business transactions and other dealings, they are subject to scrutiny for violations, if any,” added the official.
