India Using Chilli Spray, Stun Grenades to Stop Rohingya from Entering Country

September 23, 2017 by Nasheman

[Mohammad Ponir Hossain/Reuters]

New Delhi: India has stepped up security along its largely porous eastern border with Bangladesh and is using “chilli and stun grenades” to block the entry of Rohingya Muslims fleeing from violence in their homeland of Myanmar, officials said on Friday.

Border forces in Hindu-majority India, which wants to deport around 40,000 Rohingya already living in the country, citing security risks, have been authorised to use “rude and crude” methods to stop any infiltration attempts.

“We don’t want to cause any serious injury or arrest them, but we won’t tolerate Rohingya on Indian soil,” said a senior official with the Border Security Force (BSF) in New Delhi.

“We’re using grenades containing chilli spray to stop hundreds of Rohingyas trying to enter India … the situation is tense,” added the official, who declined to be identified as he was not authorised to speak to media.

More than 420,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since Aug. 25, when a coordinated attack by Rohingya insurgents on Myanmar security forces triggered a counteroffensive, killing at least 400 people, mainly militants. The United Nations has called the assault a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

Densely populated Bangladesh is struggling to shelter all the refugees desperate for space to set up shacks, sparking worries in India that the influx could spill into its territory.

R.P.S. Jaswal, a deputy inspector general of the BSF patrolling a large part of the border in India’s eastern state of West Bengal, said his troops were told to use both chilli grenades and stun grenades to push back the Rohingya.

A chilli grenade makes use of a naturally-occurring compound in chilli powder to cause severe irritation and temporarily immobilise its target.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government is growing increasingly hostile towards the Rohingya in India, with Home Minister Rajnath Singh calling on Thursday for their deportation as illegal migrants.

Fresh fires, bomb

blast in Rakhine

Twenty homes caught fire and a bomb was detonated near a mosque in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, the government said Friday, the latest unrest in a region that has seen hundreds of thousands of Rohinyga Muslims flee in under a month.

The violence comes days after Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi declared that the military had ceased its “clearance operations” in the border area.

The army claims it is trying to flush out Rohingya militants who attacked police posts on August 25.

But civilian refugees streaming into Bangladesh say they were terrorised by soldiers and vigilante Buddhist mobs who torched their villages to the ground.

The testimony, alongside satellite images of some 200 villages reduced to ash, have fuelled accusations that Myanmar’s army is systematically purging a Muslim minority haunted by years of persecution.

The UN has described the military campaign as “ethnic cleansing”.

The latest violence saw 20 homes catch fire in Maungdaw’s Kyain Chaung village on Thursday night, according to a statement posted by the government’s Information Committee.

“Security members went and checked the fire and are investigating its cause,” said the statement, adding that the flames burned through a community previously hit by fire.

The following morning a bomb detonated outside of a mosque in Mi Chaung Zay village in nearby Buthidaung township, according to the government.

The statement said “terrorists” were to blame for the blast, without specifying if they were linked to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) – the Rohingya militant group behind the ambushes on police posts. No deaths or injuries were reported in either incident.

Bangladesh’s PM at

UN urges ‘safe zones’

Bangladesh’s prime minister on Thursday proposed creating UN-supervised safe zones inside Myanmar to protect Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing a military crackdown to seek refuge in her country.

“These people must be able to return to their homeland in safety, security and dignity,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the UN General Assembly.

The United Nations says more than 420,000 Rohingya have fled for safety to Bangladesh in the face of an army campaign in northern Rakhine state that includes rape and the burning of villages.

The military operation was sparked by attacks carried out by Rohingya militants on police posts on August 25.

Hasina accused Myanmar authorities of laying landmines on the border to prevent the Rohingyas from returning and said the United Nations must take immediate measures to find a solution to the crisis. The prime minister laid out a five-point plan that called for the protection of the Rohingyas in “safe zones that could be created inside Myanmar under UN supervision.”

The United Nations has described the military operation as “ethnic cleansing” and French President Emmanuel Macron went further, describing it as a “genocide.”

Rohingya refugee camps on the brink of a ‘health disaster’: MSF

Bangladesh’s refugee camps are on the brink of a “public health disaster,” Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned, saying filthy water and faeces flow through shanties bursting with Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in Myanmar.

Nearly 430,000 Rohingya have poured into Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar in under a month, seeking refuge from an army-led crackdown across the border in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which the UN has described as “ethnic cleansing”.

The weary and wounded arrivals have shocked the world with stories of Myanmar soldiers and Buddhist mobs driving them out of their homes with gunshots and arson attacks that have razed entire villages to ash. While Bangladesh has offered sanctuary from the terror, there are dire shortages of nearly all forms of relief in what has become one of the world’s largest refugee settlements in a matter of weeks. MSF on Thursday warned that a “massive scale-up of humanitarian aid is needed in Bangladesh to avoid a public health disaster”.

“We are receiving adults every day on the cusp of dying from dehydration,” said Kate White, the group’s emergency medical coordinator.

“That’s very rare among adults, and signals that a public health emergency could be just around the corner.”

UN needs $200 million for ‘catastrophic’ influx

The United Nations will need $200 million over the next six months to face the “catastrophic” influx of more than 420,000 Rohingya refugees to Bangladesh, a top UN official said Friday.

The Rohingya Muslims, escaping ethnic unrest in Myanmar, have overwhelmed Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar in under a month. The UN made an emergency appeal for $78 million on September 9, but UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh, Robert Watkins, said much more would be needed as the exodus grows.

“Our best estimate at this point is $200 million. We are putting together a plan right now that will be ready in about four or five days,” Watkins told AFP.

Iran tests new ballistic missile: state media

September 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Defying US warnings, state media shows test of Khoramshahr missile hours after it was unveiled during a military parade.

by Al Jazeera

Iran has “successfully” tested a new ballistic missile that can carry multiple warheads and can travel up to 2,000km, according to state media.

The news of the test comes just hours after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard unveiled the missile during a military parade in Tehran.

The move was a direct challenge to US President Donald Trump, who in August signed a bill imposing mandatory penalties on those involved in Iran’s ballistic missile programme and anyone who does business with those involved in the programme.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr missile was displayed in public.

Trump has vowed repeatedly to take a tougher line towards Iran, threatening at various time to renegotiate or dismantle the 2015 nuclear deal, and shoot Iranian boats out of the water if they provoke US naval vessels.

‘Boost military capabilities’

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed Friday’s parade in Tehran, saying that Iran would not halt its missile programme and would continue to boost military capabilities, despite US warnings and demands.

“We will strengthen our defence and military capabilities … whether you want it or not,” Rouhani said, a direct response to Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly this week.

Rouhani has said that the Trump administration is seeking “an excuse” to pull out of the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement that capped Iran’s nuclear activities in return for the lifting of international sanctions on Iran.

The deal between Iran and world powers does not strictly prohibit Iran from developing missiles, but after the agreement came into effect last year, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Iran not to take any actions related to ballistic missiles “designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons” for eight years.

Tehran has argued that the tests are solely for defensive purposes and notes the Security Council measure only applies to missiles specifically designed to carry nuclear warheads.

In February, Iran test-fired the same medium-range type of missile, prompting Trump to say that the United States is “putting Iran on notice”.

The report of the test, shown late on Friday on state television, did not mention the time or location of the test.

Shobhaa De to Arnab Goswami: The Nation Does Care

September 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Arnab’s hold over his fans was formidable enough to get away with his obnoxious style of functioning.

by Shobhaa De

Never thought a day would come when the nation would pity Arnab Goswami, and actually feel sorry for the man! But thanks to Rajdeep Sardesai and his tweets calling out a former colleague for fabricating a dramatic narrative going back to the Gujarat riots in 2002, it has become official — Arnab, the self-styled emperor of prime-time, has no clothes. What a fall there was, my countrymen! Just look at where Arnab stands today! Once he was exposed as a complete liar by Sardesai and others, the dam broke. And it is worth analysing why there was such open and enthusiastic jubilation over this single expose! It established incontrovertibly what a despised man Arnab had become over time. And how, perhaps for the first time in the history of our media, one of their own was gleefully trampled over, his carefully cultivated reputation mangled, and his well-crafted image successfully shredded. Dog definitely and enthusiastically ate dog in this round.

If one examines the myriad jokes and memes that were created within hours of the truth tumbling out, it pointed to a rather sordid development — it does not pay to ride the moral high horse as Arnab had, and emerge a blatant liar. Media games are ruthless and played by cold-blooded professionals. Even going by that yardstick, Arnab’s annihilation has been epic and swift! Suddenly, this pompous man has been reduced to a pretty puny nobody. All the people he once insulted and humiliated on his shows have risen as one to chorus: “Serves him right!”

This may appear a childish way to deal with an old foe. But the story is far bigger. And, as it now turns out, Arnab’s biggest enemy was Arnab! I recall a conversation I had in Kathmandu last year, with a loud, crude mediaman. I suspect he had invested in Arnab’s soon-to-be-launched channel, since his entire keynote address to a visibly baffled Nepali media was about the dynamism and greatness of a man called Arnab Goswami. I was pretty puzzled and wondered what that was all about. Later, the same evening, this guy continued to sing Arnab’s praises, much to the irritation of an advertising agency biggie. I was getting bugged as well. So, I asked the loudmouth on what basis was he proclaiming the assured success of the new channel? Wasn’t he making far too many assumptions? He looked at me and asked where Arnab could possibly go wrong. “He is the biggest media star in Asia. His brand value is unbeatable. There is no one else in his league.”

Technically, he wasn’t off the mark. And yet, I was highly sceptical and said so, going as far as to say, “I am willing to bet a hundred bucks Arnab will flop.” The man scoffed and said: “Impossible! Do you know who is backing him?” I said that was a no-brainer. But, despite that backing, I was still on with the wager. He shook his head like men do when they actually want to say: “No point arguing with women. And particularly, this woman.” Suddenly, the adwalla tycoon spoke up. “If she is betting 100 bucks, put my bet down to 10,000.” Mr Loudmouth started to freak out. I thought I saw foam coming out of his mouth. “Both of you are totally wrong! Mark my words, Arnab’s channel will wipe out the rest.”

I would love to meet Mr Loudmouth now and ask him to pay up. In all his calibrations and calculations he had missed out on one important factor: truth. The same “truth” Arnab claimed to stand for. The truth he pretended he and he alone was the custodian of. The truth he successfully peddled to the nation, as he dominated the pulpit and bellowed out his sermons, night after night. Even the mightiest bully is eventually defeated by an unlikely slip.

Arnab could never have imagined that his arrogant lie would be caught and exposed in this manner. All his huffing and puffing has been reduced to a pretty pathetic joke, almost overnight. How could he have thought he’d get away with such a monumental untruth, such a concocted story? This is exactly how and where bullies often trip up. Cocooned by their cowering minions into believing they are untouchable, people like Arnab count on brute force to silence anybody who questions them.

Arnab’s hold over his fans was formidable enough to get away with his obnoxious style of functioning. The reason for his popularity is simple enough to understand: the people who formed his constituency were equally obnoxious!

He said on air what they thought in private. The hatred and contempt for those who didn’t agree with his skewered views he so proudly paraded night after night, were echoed by those people who spewed venom on “libtards” and called the rest “presstitutes”. Arnab’s abrupt political about-turn surprised nobody when it happened. Those who knew his antecedents wondered what had taken him so long to reveal his true avatar.

Well, Arnab’s downfall carries in it an invaluable lesson for all mediawallas. Arnab had antagonised far too many people and tried to destroy innumerable lives. It’s called attracting bad karma. Journalists generally get away with far more than is good for them. But even within this insecure, competitive, aggressive fraternity, there is always space for ideological differences. What there is zero tolerance for is just one thing: lying and appropriating someone else’s story. It’s called theft. And thieves have no business projecting themselves as saints and saviours. The nation is disgusted by the man who claimed to speak on its behalf.

Indian flies to Singapore to buy new iPhone as wedding gift for daughter

September 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Singapore: An Indian businessman flew all the way to Singapore and lined up for 13 hours overnight outside an Apple store to buy the latest iPhone as a wedding gift for his daughter.

Amin Ahmed Dholiya, 43, was the first in the queue outside the Apple store on Orchard Road, where he arrived around 7 pm on Thursday to get his hands on the iPhone 8 Plus which hit the shelves yesterday, reported The Straits Times today.

“I will buy two (phones), one for my other daughter (as well). This is my first-time queueing overnight for something. I am feeling good now but it will be hard to stand all night,” he was quoted as saying on Thursday.

When the store opened at 8 am yesterday, there were some 200 people, including many foreigners, in the queue.

Dholiya returned home last night, according to the Singapore daily.

The new iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus were the first major products launched at the store since it opened in May.

Foreigners “have a bigger reason to queue up and buy” at the Apple store here because the new devices have not yet been launched in their countries, and many of them may have to buy the phones without contract even when the phones are launched back home,” said Kiranjeet Kaur, a senior research manager for client devices at market research firm IDC Asia-Pacific.

Apple had on September 12 unveiled the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Singapore consumers will generally prefer to get the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus at a subsidised price with a telco contract, said Kaur.

Many customers from the three Singapore telcos avoided queuing for too long as they could book time slots to collect their new iPhones elsewhere.

I am really looking forward to the film’s reception in India. And what better a place for that than MAMI itself”

In brief the synopsis of Machines underlines our technological times which enable us to reduce working hours like never before in human civilization. But the reduction of effort by technology is a first world reality, where relatively comparable technology with lesser material infrastructure could do the same for a much higher mass of the population.

Since the 1960’s, the area of machines, India has undergone unprecedented Industrialization; exemplified in its numerous textile factories. Machines portrays only one of these & represents at the same time thousands of laborers working & living in an environment they can´t escape from without unity.

Machines attempts to examine the experiential reality of factory culture & labor processes through temporal observation. Rather than documenting chronology or history, it creates a portrait of the breathing rhythms of the humans who inhabit the labyrinths of the textile factory with its machines.

Short background information & location:

India has domestic migration issues. Out of its 30 states & 7 union’s territories, there is a precisely planned historical inequality in the Indian Government’s push for the development of industrial Infrastructure. This has led to cases of extreme poverty & wealth being generated in Particular states, leading to mass migrations for employment. A surplus of labor to these booming economic areas allows factory owners to pay inhuman & unpractical wages for calculated & demanding labor.

Exploitation is timeless. In countries that lack applied laws for non – skilled labor, the globalized free market is a playground to the bourgeoisie for the creation of unequal wealth; when 3rd world labor is sold in 1st world markets, a lot of profit can be made. The illusion of choice is a plastic concept in these places, where even without legalized bonded slavery, human beings have to helplessly accept absolute subjugating & exploitative employment terms out of lack of any sustainable options. “Majboori” or helplessness is the word most often repeated by these laborers on justifying their reasons for accepting such dehumanizing terms.

It is economic analysis & not morality that decides the cost of labor. In a globalized world that is dominantly reliant on the language of capital, the laws of supply & demand extend their influence from inanimate products to human life.

History is evidence to the arduous struggle of workers seeking dignified working conditions. The countries that enjoy & practice basic protection of human rights today are a century ahead of their counterparts to have collectively struggled for the acceptance & implementation of systems that protect the weak & the vulnerable.

When governments turn a blind eye towards the business activity in their industries, a few individuals acquire unchecked powers over a much higher mass of people. A process of further conditions creates the environment for extreme inequality and a lack of united labor. The film is a testimony to this cycle.

Directors Note: As a young boy of 5, I used to roam around in my grandfathers now defunct textile – dyeing factory in Sachin, Gujarat, India. A child’s perspective is very much motivated by height, but as an adult, the depth perception takes over. It was easy to get lost in the labyrinthine corridors. The machines overwhelmed me as 3 feet tall kindergartener. It was this sensation of being minuscule in front of the gigantic processing machines that took me back to a similar factory like that now, 2 decades later. I remember the feeling of being lost in the long aisles of printing machines, enjoying the smell of the coal in the factory’s boiler rooms.

Seeing the world on an eye – to – eye level basis helped me sort my inclinations well. We forget this impulse in our everyday existential structures because these things are hidden from our immediate field of vision, and I wish to elucidate through the camera this simple eye – to – eye perspective we sometimes choose to not acknowledge. Venturing into many factories I have gotten a sense of my class, my identity among the 1.3 billion Indians I share my nationality with.

Food, housing & fabric are the material necessities of existence. A factory function within these interests of a variety of human elements. There is one boss relative to thousands of workers. A lack of unionized labor in a densely populated, quickly accelerating economy leaves room for a lot to be left unseen, deliberate overlooking of a multitude of human beings for the interests of a few. It is not just one factory; it’s a civilizational structure. The systems that allow this to happen are the ones that need collective acknowledgment.

Observing this endless Labour in these factories has a “watching paint dry” quality to them. As troubling & painful the images may be to look at, their aestheticized form encourages the viewer to not look away from what we usually don’t wish to acknowledge.

Ryan School murder: CBI gets custody of three persons

September 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Gurugram: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday got the custody of three persons earlier arrested by the Haryana Police in connection with the murder of a seven-year-old Ryan International School student.

A designated court here on Saturday remanded the three to one-day CBI custody in the ongoing case which was earlier being investigated by the Haryana Police.

The police had arrested a bus conductor, Ashok Kumar, 42, employed with Ryan school, its North India head Francis Thomas and HR head Jeyus Thomas as part of its investigation into the murder of Class II student Pradhuman Thakur earlier this month.

The CBI took over the case on Friday and registered an FIR under sections of the IPC for murder, Arms Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Juvenile Justice Act.

The Haryana government had ordered a CBI inquiry into the killing of Pradhuman on September 15.

Pradhuman was on September 8 found dead with his throat slit inside the school’s washroom, within an hour after his father dropped him at the school.

Earlier in the day, a 12-member CBI team arrived at Ryan school in Bhondsi, some 50 kilometre from Delhi, to collect forensic evidence related to the death of the seven-year-old student.

The local police station, where the case was registered earlier, is assisting the CBI team.

Police alleged that the school bus conductor killed him with a knife as the boy resisted an attempt to sodomise him. After the arrest of the conductor, his parents and two other Ryan school staffers claimed he was being made a scapegoat.

The Haryana Police is also seeking to question school CEO Ryan Pinto and Director Augustine Pinto. The case snowballed into a major national issue over the safety and security of children in schools, with vociferous protests held by parents and activists outside Ryan schools in several states.
