Harmanpreet’s brace guides India to 3-0 win over New Zealand

May 1, 2017 by Nasheman

Harmanpreet Singh

Ipoh (Malaysia): Defender Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners as India stamped their authority over New Zealand with an assertive 3-0 victory in the 26th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here today.

Following a 2-2 draw against Great Britain in the opening game yesterday, India now have four points from two outings.

Mandeep Singh opened the Indian account with a fine deflection in the 23rd minute before Harmanpreet produced two fine drag-flicks to penetrate the Black Sticks defence.

After allowing the experimental New Zealand team to have three shots at the goal in the first quarter, the Indian team settled down to dominate the match thereafter.

The Indian game today was not disturbed by the afternoon showers and lightening, which have been a feature of the tropical weather this season.

India’s tournament-opener yesterday started two hours late due to lightening, pushing the day’s entire schedule back.

Today, the first signs of match-disrupting lightening occurred soon after the Indian players went off the pitch on completion of their game.

It was New Zealand, who earned the first penalty corner in the sixth minute, but it could not pose any danger as the low shot went straight to goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, who kicked it out of the circle.

As the Indian defence took time to settle down, New Zealand had two early shots at the citadel before Akashdeep Singh took an ambitions try from the top of the circle in the 10th minute, only to see his reverse drive soar high over the cross-bar.

Two minutes later, Manpreet Singh sent a diagonal ball into the circle to S V Sunil, who shot wide with only goalkeeper Devon Manchester to beat.

India broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Chinglensana Singh sent a reverse shot from top of the box into the goalmouth, where Mandeep did exceptionally well to deflect the shoulder high ball past the goalkeeper.

Harmanpreet then came into the picture with a drag-flick off the first penalty corner. The stinging shot went into the left corner of the board to make it 2-0 in the 27th minute.

India forced two penalty corners in as many minutes just before half-time, but were stopped on both occasions.

In the 30th minute, on India’s fourth penalty corner, New Zealand defended stoutly as Sardar Singh picked up the ball behind Harmanpreet and tried to keep up the pressure by flicking the ball into the scoring zone.

Playing in his 200th international today, Sunil had a chance to make an entry on the scoresheet five minutes after half-time when he was again in a one-on-one position with the goalkeeper, but ended up flicking wide of the mark.

Akashdeep took a try from a very narrow angle in the 39th minute, but the shot went over the bar.
Harmanpreet came back to round off the Indian scoring with another penalty corner conversion, this time sending a soaring drag-flick into the top corner of the net in the 47th minute.

With Harmanpreet in fine nick, he was allowed to take the shot on six of India’s seven penalty corners, although the push could not be stopped on two occasions.

Rupinderpal Singh only took the last of India’s penalty corners and his shot was blocked by the Black Sticks goalkeeper.

‘Journalism requires courage’ The Wire chief tells young journalists

May 1, 2017 by Nasheman

Siddharth Varadharajan

Bangalore: “Stick to journalism.” Siddharth Varadharajan, founding editor of The Wire, gave this piece of advice to a crowd of budding journalists entering the “working world of journalism.”

Speaking at the annual graduation ceremony of Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media on May 1, 2017, Varadharajan warned the trainee journalists of the difficult times that they are invariably going to encounter in their careers.

But the only way to survive it was to “stick to the fundamental traits of journalism,” said the former editor of The Hindu.

Addressing the graduating batch of 2016-17, he summed up the problem facing this profession and his solution, using the oft-used journalistic framework of Who, what, where, when, why and how.

He said the problem that confronts Indian journalists today (The What), is largely due to the culture perpetuated by the media owners (The How), because of their increased reliance on advertiser revenues (The Why).

He said that Indian journalism of today is as bad, if not better than that in the 80s, that there was never a golden era of journalism (The When). The new journalists (The Who), in his view, were lucky to have new story-telling platforms to tell stories effectively and engage with readers. (The Where)

Reinventing business models, using social media effectively were certain things that could alleviate this problem, said the winner of the Ramnath Goenka Award for excelling in journalism.

“Journalism requires courage,” said Varadharajan, adding that the students had accomplished their first act of bravery by having completed their course in journalism.

He warned that the governments and private establishments alike will use all means, fair and foul, to suppress good journalism. The trend of “SLAP litigations, where corporates have increasingly taken to the law to silence any uncomfortable questions, was another tactic he warned of.

To thrive in their careers while overcoming these obstacles, he advised the students to: “Be passionate but objective. Be interested in people, their stories and their problems. Learn how to ask questions, especially to those of authority. Learn how to write well.”

In his address to the graduating batch of 2017, Dean Abraham George asked them to remember that a free press is the voice of the people in a democracy.

At a time when national leaders have not lived up to the challenges facing their countries, and are many times the cause of the problems, the press needs to be strong enough to expose the truth to the public. Unfortunately, that is not the case, he said.

Pointing out that prosperity for a few cannot be the yardstick for a nation’s success, he said that it was for the young journalists to inform and bring about positive change by impacting public opinion.

At the Convocation students who excelled in certain areas were given awards.

Karnataka BJP rift: Unperturbed Yeddyurappa says ‘mission 150’ in mind

May 1, 2017 by Nasheman

yeddyurappa eshwarappa

Shivamogga: Amid the bitter feud brewing within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Karnataka unit, state party chief B.S. Yeddyurappa on Sunday pinned his hope on his colleague P. Muralidhar Rao and said the saffron party’s only aim was to secure majority in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Rao, who is in-charge of the BJP’s affairs in Karnataka, has been sent by BJP president Amit Shah to sort out the warring factions – one headed by Yedurappa and the other by K.S. Eshwarappa.

“I don’t want to discuss anything about the present development. Our president Amit Shah has already sent Muralidhar Rao, the state in charge, to judge the situation and submit a report. We just have the target of 150 in our mind. Nothing else,” Yedurappa said.

The former chief minster’s remark came even as three BJP members were relieved from their functions from the party.

Party functionaries M.B. Bhanuprakash, Nirmal Kumar Surana, M.P. Renukacharya and G. Madhusudan were relieved of their posts.

On Thursday, around 24 party leaders held a ‘Save BJP’ conference and criticised the leadership of Yeddyurappa.

Reshuffle in Cong; Venugopal replaces Digvijay as Karnataka party in-charge

May 1, 2017 by Nasheman

K C Venugopal

New Delhi: Initiating changes in the Congress, party chief Sonia Gandhi Saturday removed senior leader Digvijay Singh as party’s general secretary in-charge of poll- bound Karnataka and Goa and replaced him with Rahul-loyalist K C Venugopal in the southern state.

Gandhi also elevated AICC secretary A Chella Kumar as incharge of Goa, replacing Singh who was embroiled in a fiasco in government formation in the coastal state.

Another party leader Madhusudan Mistry ceased to be a general secretary after he was made a member of the party’s Central Election Authority for holding the organisational polls later this year.

“Congress President Sonia Gandhi has assigned the tasks of looking after Karnataka and Goa affairs to new AICC teams.

While K C Venugopal has been made general secretary incharge of Karnataka, A Chella Kumar has been made AICC incharge of Goa,” party general secretary Janaradan Dwivedi said in a statement.

Venugopal, the Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha in Kerala and the party’s deputy whip in the Lok Sabha, is a confidante of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

He will be assisted by four secretaries to take care of Karnataka affairs–Manickam Tagore, PC Vishnunadh, Madhu Yashki Goud and Sake Sailjanath.

In Goa, where the party failed to form its government despite getting 17 seats, Chella Kumar has been made the AICC incharge of Goa, while Amit Deshmukh will be the Secretary AICC of the state.

As Congress’s Goa unit incharge, Singh failed in government formation while the BJP retained power after getting only 13 seats.

Singh’s inaction evoked widespread criticism within the party, which had accused the BJP of creating an “artificial majority” to form its government.

Though removal of Singh, considered close to the Gandhis has shocked many, he continues to be general secretary incharge of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Meanwhile, Mistry also ceased to be the party’s general secretary as he was made a member of the Central Election Authority.

“The Congress president has approved the composition of the Central Organisational Election Authority of the AICC.

Mullapally Ramachandran will be its Chairman and Bhubaneshwar Kalita and Madhusudan Mistry will be its members,” Dwivedi said in another statement.

“Since Mistry has become the member of Central Election Authority, he will not hold any organisational post as per the party’s Constitution,” the statement said.

Gandhi also formed an Advisory Committee of CEA in which Shamsher Singh Dullo, Rajya Sabha MP, Ashk Ali Taq, former MP and Biren Singh Engti, MP, have been made members.

Gandhi had earlier appointed former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot as party’s general secretary incharge of Gujarat, slated to go to polls later this year, removing party leader Gurudas Kamat from the post.

Some more changes are expected in other states like Himachal Pradesh which goes to polls later this year along with Gujarat.

mob assam cow death

Guwahati: In yet another incident of violent cow vigilantism, two men were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of stealing cattle in Assam’s Nagaon district. Two men were detained and were being questioned.

Senior police officials told PTI that the victims were aged between 20 and 25.

The mob continuously thrashed them with sticks while chasing them for about 1.5 km, from Kasamari in Nagaon police station area to Jajori police station area, he said.

Asked if it was a case of “cow vigilantism”, Upadhay said a lot of cattle thefts had been reported in the area. “In this case, I got reports that some people saw the two men trying to take away cows from the field and called more people from the village. When a large crowd gathered, they started thrashing them badly,” he told PTI.

Telangana police has set up bogus ISIS website to radicalise Muslim youth: Digvijaya Singh

May 1, 2017 by Nasheman

Digvijaya Singh

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has once again triggered a controversy after he claimed that Telangana Police has set up a bogus Islamic State website to radicalise Muslim youth and encourage them to join terror modules.

Telangana Police has set up a bogus ISIS site which is radicalising Muslim Youths and encouraging them to become ISIS Modules.

— digvijaya singh (@digvijaya_28) May 1, 2017

Digvijay tweeted: “Telangana Police has set up a bogus ISIS site which is radicalising Muslim Youths and encouraging them to become ISIS Modules.”

“It was on their information that MP Police arrested accused who were responsible for the bomb blast in train in Shajapur District of MP.”

“It also resulted in Saifullaha encounter in Kanpur the same day.”

“The issue is whether Telangana Police should be trapping Muslim Youths in becoming ISIS modules by posting inflammatory information?”

“Is It Ethical? Is it Moral? Has KCR authorised Telangana Police to trap Muslim Youths and encourage them to join ISIS?”

“If he has then shouldn’t he own the responsibility and resign?”

“If he hasn’t then shouldn’t he enquire and punish those who are responsible for committing such a heinous crime?”

The Telangana Police have issued a strong rebuttal to the claims made by Digvijaya.

Telangana DGP tweeted: “Unfounded allegations from a senior responsible leader will lower the morale and image of Police engaged in fighting anti-national forces.”

The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti has also slammed Digvijaya Singh.

KT Rama Rao, a minister in the state government and son of CM K Chandrashekhar Rao, tweeted: “Most irresponsible & reprehensible thing coming from a former CM. Request you to withdraw these comments unconditionally or provide evidence.”

The TRS is now mulling legal action against the Congress leader.
