Kolkata film institute students continue relay hunger strike

October 30, 2017 by Nasheman

Picture: Oinam Anand

Kolkata: A relay hunger strike launched by agitating students of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) here continued for the second day on Monday over demands of “immediate and unconditional revocation” of rustication of 14 female students.

Besides the revocation, other demands include ending hostel segregation and for academic reforms.

On Monday, seven volunteers who had kicked-off the strike late on Saturday, relayed the protest to seven others.

Expulsion of the girl students allegedly over “hostel segregation” after they refused to vacate the old hostel rooms and shift to a new girls’ hostel on the campus, triggered protests among the students fraternity since October 17.

The impasse between institute’s students and authorities has not been resolved since then.

The protesting students contend they had agreed to accept the hostel segregation but the authorities refused to revoke the expulsion order “unconditionally.”

However, if the demands are not met by Monday evening, the students have threatened to go an indefinite hunger strike.

Director Debamitra Mitra has said unconditional reversal of expulsion is not a possibility and it would set a bad precedent.

SC to set up Constitution bench to hear pleas against Aadhaar

October 30, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A constitution bench would be set up to hear a clutch of petitions challenging the Centre’s decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for availing various services and government welfare schemes, the Supreme Court today said.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said the larger bench would commence hearing on these petitions in the last week of November this year.

Earlier today, the apex court questioned the West Bengal government for filing a plea challenging the Centre’s move to make Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes while asking how a state can challenge the mandate of Parliament.

It also asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to file the plea as an individual.

Recently, a nine-judge Constitution bench had held that the Right ot Privacy was a Fundamental Right under the Constitution. Several petitioners challenging the validity of Aadhaar had raised the issue that the scheme was violative of privacy rights.

Senior advocates Gopal Subramanium and Shyam Divan, appearing for those opposing the Aadhaar scheme, had sought urgent hearing on the petitions.

The Centre had on October 25 told the apex court that the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail the benefits of the government schemes has been extended till March 31 next year for those who do not have the 12-digit biometric identification number and were willing to have it.

The petitioners had termed the linking of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) number with bank accounts and mobile numbers as illegal and unconstitutional and strongly objected to the CBSE’s move to make it mandatory for students to appear for exams.

Divan, appearing for some of the petitioners, had earlier contended that final hearing in the main Aadhaar matter, which is pending before the apex court, was necessary as the government “cannot compel” citizens to link their Aadhaar with either bank accounts or mobile numbers.

Haider al-Abadi halts operation in northern Iraq

by Al Jazeera

Iraq’s prime minister has ordered a temporary halt to a military operation in the country’s north aimed at wresting back territory held by Kurdish security forces.

In a statement on Friday, Haider al-Abadi ordered government forces to suspend their operations for 24 hours to enable the deployment of other forces in coordination with Kurdish forces in the disputed areas and along the country’s borders.

The suspension of the movement of troops will allow a technical team from the two sides to jointly work for the deployment, al-Abadi said.

“This is aimed at preventing a showdown and bloodshed between people of the same country.”

Al-Abadi’s decision came a day after government forces and Kurdish forces clashed near the northern city of Mosul.

Last week, Iraqi forces retook the oil-rich region of Kirkuk, which had been held by the Kurds since the Iraqi army fled from advancing ISIL fighters in 2014.

The show of force came after the secession referendum of September 25, in which 92 percent of Kurds supported independence from Iraq, prompting tension between the two sides.

Ceasefire claim retracted
Earlier on Friday, the US-led coalition battling ISIL, (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIS), said Iraqi and Kurdish forces must focus on dialogue and reducing internal tensions in order to combat a larger enemy.

“We are encouraging dialogue. We’re trying to get the tensions down and to refocus our efforts on defeating ISIS,” Colonel Ryan Dillon, coalition spokesperson, told Rudaw, a news agency in the Iraqi Kurdish region, in a video interview.

“What we are encouraging is dialogue and trying to get the right people to the table.”

Dillon said in the interview that there was a “ceasefire” between Iraqi and Kurdish forces, but he later retracted those remarks, noting on Twitter that while both parties had been talking, it was “not an official ‘ceasefire'”.

The primary goal is to prevent the resurgence of ISIL, Dillon said.

“They thrive on instability and discord between groups, and we cannot let them resurface. We’ve got to cut the head off of that snake and prevent them from coming back,” he said.

India outclass Singapore in women’s Asia Cup hockey opener

October 28, 2017 by Nasheman

(AFP)

Kakamigahara: India got off to a roaring start, thrashing Singapore 10-0 in their opening clash of the womens Asia Cup 2017 here on Saturday.

It was goals by Navneet Kaur (3′ and 41′), Rani (15′ and 18′), Lalremsiami (18′), Deep Grace Ekka (25′), Navjot Kaur (30′ and 50′), Gurjit Kaur (41′) and Sonika (45′) that ensured India notched up the winning points in their opening match in Pool A.

India began with a positive intent, attacking Singapore’s circle and constantly finding an opportunity to score. The effort worked as the team won back-to-back penalty corners in the first quarter.

Though the first PC was saved by Singapore goalkeeper Felissa Lai, it hardly dented India’s spirit as they were precise in their counter. It was Navneet and Rani’s goals in the third and 15th minute that gave India a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.

India continued their good run in the second quarter, adding four more goals to their lead via Lalremsiami, Rani, Deep Grace Ekka and Navjot to go into the 10-minute half-time break with an imposing 6-0 lead.

After Grace scored off a PC in the 25th minute, dragflicker Gurjit Kaur was fierce in her strike to score India’s seventh goal through a PC in the 41st minute.

India stayed resolute as they continued to put pressure on Singapore defence pumping two more goals in the third quarter through Navneet and Sonika in the 41st and 45th minute respectively.

The final 15 minutes saw India win back-to-back PCs. But the Singapore defence averted conceding further goals, before a quick-thinking Navjot scored a field goal in the 50th minute to earn her team a 10-0 lead.

Earlier in the day, China beat Malaysia 5-4 in a closely fought encounter.

Gujarat CM links IS suspect to Ahmed Patel; Cong leader rubbishes charge

October 28, 2017 by Nasheman

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Friday night demanded resignation of Congress veteran Ahmed Patel from the Rajya Sabha alleging his possible links to a suspected terrorist arrested earlier in the week from his home district of Bharuch. Ahmed Patel rubbished the charge.

Rupani, who also sought Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s clarification on the matter, was referring to Mohammed Qasim Stimberwala, one of the two alleged IS operatives arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad from Surat on Wednesday.

Stimberwala had resigned recently as an eco-cardiogram technician in the Sardar Patel Hospital and Heart Institute in Ankleshwar, which Patel had helped grow into a modern facility.

Patel was one of the trustees during the hospital’s formative years as a modern hospital and the only one in the entire Bharuch district with latest equipment and technology with facilities for heart surgery. He had resigned as a trustee in 2014 facilitating a new board of trustees to take over the facility.

The ATS, which picked up Stimberwala and Ubed Ahmed Mirza, claimed that they were planning to attack a Jewish synagogue in Khadia area of Ahmedabad and had even carried out reconnaissance of their target.

While Mirza was a practicing lawyer at the Surat district court, Stimberwala worked as a technician at the Ankleshwar hospital.

Rupani told reporters at the 9.30 p.m. press conference, which was delayed by more than three hours, that Stimberwala, caught by Intelligence Bureau and security agencies, was working at a Bharuch hospital where Patel had been a trustee and though resigning after UPA lost power, “still oversees in the working of the hospital”.

The hospital’s website has a list of eight trustees but Patel’s name does not figure in the list.

Rupani claimed that the “arrest of a person working in a hospital where Ahmed Patel was a patron gave rise to several questions as how did a terrorist get a job in a hospital having close links with Ahmed Patel? Who got him the job? Whether he was aware of their activities?”

“The questions arise because the terrorist had resigned or was to quit just two days ahead of his arrest. This arouses suspicion. We are not levying any allegations but we just want Patel and Congress to clarify. If people are convinced, then it is ok,” he said.

He went on to say that if the terrorists had not been caught, they would have carried out planned attacks on “Hindu religious heads and Jewish synagogue”. The ATS however has mentioned only a Jewish synagogue during its investigations and no Hindu religious heads, as Rupani alleged.

Ahmed Patel, in a series of tweets, said the allegations by the BJP were completely baseless.

“My party and I appreciate the ATS’s effort to nab the two terrorists. I demand strict and speedy action against them.

“We request that matters of national security should not be politicised keeping elections in mind,” he said and also urged: “Let’s not divide peace loving Gujaratis while fighting terrorism.”

One of the trustees, Jayesh Patel, clarified that Stimberwala had joined the hospital six months ago, after having worked with Wockhardt and a couple of other hospitals.

“He had resigned on October 4 and relieved on October 24 according to his service conditions. He had said that he was leaving due to a better opportunity,” he said.

WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature finally rolled out

October 28, 2017 by Nasheman

San Francisco: WhatsApp has finally rolled out its most anticipated feature ‘Delete for Everyone’ that allows its over one billion users revoke their messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group.

You can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending.

“Once seven minutes have passed, there is no way to delete messages for everyone,” Facebook-owned WhatsApp said in its updated FAQ on Friday.

“In order for messages to be successfully deleted for everyone, both you and your recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone,” the micro-blogging platform said.

WhatsApp was working on this feature for almost a year.

You can now delete messages for everyone or just for yourself.

“Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete specific messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the message you sent contains a mistake,” WhatsApp noted.

Messages you successfully delete for everyone will be replaced with “This message was deleted” in your recipients’ chats.

Similarly, if you see “This message was deleted” in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for everyone.

This is how it works:

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu.

Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Everyone”.

“If you or your recipient are not using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone, this feature will not be supported,” WhatsApp said.

Recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if deletion was not successful.

According to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp, this feature works for messages in text, videos, GIFs, pictures, voice messages, quoted messages and status replies.

The second part is to delete messages only for yourself.

Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone.

“This has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen,” WhatsApp said.

For this, open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu.

Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Me”.

“The feature is being slowly rolled out and users can reinstall WhatsApp in order to download from the server the latest configuration,” WABetaInfo said.

Rahul’s elevation after Gujarat elections, hints Congress

October 28, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: In an indication that Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s much-expected elevation as party president may not take place before the Gujarat elections, the party on Friday said it has time till December 31 to complete the entire organisational election process and take a decision on the matter.

The party also said that Gandhi is not only capable of leading the Congress, but is also capable of leading the United Progressive Alliance and the country.

“The election process in the states is in advanced stage. We have to take a decision by the end of this year and we will do so at the appropriate time, and the election process will also be completed in due course,” said Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken.

“The deadline is till the end of this year,” he added on being asked why Gandhi was not being chosen as party president by October 31.

“We always believed that Rahul Gandhiji is our leader, he is our Vice President and he is capable of leading the Congress, the UPA and also leading the country,” said Maken.

“We have time till December 31 to complete the whole process and report it to the Election Commission. By that time the process will be over,” he added.

The Congress had earlier set a deadline to complete the organisational elections by the end of October.
