I-T officials question Rabri, kin in benami property case

August 29, 2017 by Nasheman

Patna: RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi, younger son Tejashwi Yadav and elder daughter Misa Bharti were on Tuesday questioned in connection with an alleged “benami” (proxy) properties case by Income Tax Department personnel here, officials said.

“Soon after the three reached the Income Tax office here around 10 a.m., they were questioned for over five hours.”

According to department officials, the development was kept a closely guarded secret in view of security threat involved.

Rabri Devi is former Bihar Chief Minister while Tejashwi is a former Deputy Chief Minister and currently Leader of Opposition in the state assembly. Misa Bharti is a Rajya Sabha member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

A senior RJD leader told IANS that two days after the party organised a successful anti-BJP rally attended by leaders of 16 opposition parties in Patna, the Centre was again misusing the Income Tax Department to “harass Lalu-ji’s family members”.

In May, the department had raided 22 places in and around Delhi in connection with the case after senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushil Kumar Modi claimed Lalu Prasad was connected to hundreds of “benami” properties.

Blue Whale challenge: 13-year-old UP boy found hanging

August 29, 2017 by Nasheman

Lucknow: A 13-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh, reportedly influenced by the Blue Whale challenge, hanged himself to death on Sunday evening.

Parth Singh from Maudaha in Hamirpur district was a class VI student of Jaipuria Public School.

One of Parth’s relative reveals that he had told his father that he was playing a game and will emerge victorious after completing the last level.

Parth was playing the game for some time and when his family tried to dissuade him, he secretly started playing it on his parent’s smart phones. It seems that he told his mother that their lives were in danger.

On Sunday, Parth said that he has to go to his friend’s birthday party in the evening and locked himself in the room. A few hours later when he did not respond to knocks, his father Vikram Singh broke open the door and found Parth hanging from the ceiling fan.

Maudaha circle officer Abhishek Yadav has confirmed that the Blue Whale Challenge is main reason for suicide. The smart phone used by Parth is sent to IT experts who are probing the issue.

Recently, that UP DGP Sulkhan Singh has already sent directives to all district police chiefs, asking them to remain vigilant and ban the playing of game by students. Yet the game claimed its first victim in Uttar Pradesh.

The Blue Whale challenge is an online game which requires participants to complete 50 life-threatening challenges and the last task is suicide. Vulnerable teens that fall prey to this game are threatened that their family will be harmed, if they wish to leave the game midway.

Rohingya: ‘Even a baby was not spared by the army’

August 28, 2017 by Nasheman

Residents accuse security forces of shooting ‘indiscriminately’ at the Muslim minority, forcing thousands to flee.

[File: AFP]

by Faisal Edroos, Al Jazeera

The Myanmar army has been accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings in the restive Rakhine region, with residents and activists accusing soldiers of shooting indiscriminately at unarmed Rohingya men, women and children and carrying out arson attacks.

Authorities in Myanmar say close to 100 people have been killed since Friday when armed men, reportedly from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), launched a pre-dawn raid on police outposts in the restive region.

The army has declared a war against “terrorism”, encircling the townships of Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Rathedaung, home to around 800,000 people, and imposed a curfew from 6pm (11:30 GMT) to 6am (23:30 GMT).

However, advocates for the Rohingya have given a much higher death toll, telling Al Jazeera that at least 800 of the Muslim minority, including dozens of women and children, have been killed in the violence.

Al Jazeera could not independently verify the figures.

Aziz Khan, a Maungdaw resident, said the army stormed his village early on Friday and began “firing indiscriminately at people’s cars and homes.

“Government forces and the border guard police killed at least 11 people in my village. When they arrived they started shooting at everything that moved. Some soldiers then carried out arson attacks.

“Women and children were also among the dead,” he said. “Even a baby wasn’t spared.”

Ro Nay San Lwin, a Rohingya activist and blogger based in Europe, said anywhere between 5,000 – 10,000 people had been driven from their homes by the recent offensive.

Using a network of activists on the ground to document the conflict, San Lwin said mosques and madrasas [religious Islamic institutions] had been burned to the ground, with thousands of Muslims stranded without food and shelter.

“My own uncles were forced to flee by the government and the military,” he told Al Jazeera.

“There has been no help from the government, instead people’s homes have been destroyed and their goods looted.

“Without food, shelter and protection, they don’t know when we’ll be killed.”

Speaking to Al Jazeera under a pseudonym, Myint Lwin, a resident of Buthidaung township, said that “fear had gripped every household.

“People have been sharing videos of the killings on WhatsApp. Videos of women and children being killed. Innocent men being shot dead. You can’t begin to imagine how scared we are.

“Nobody wants to leave their home. Muslims are scared to go anywhere, hospitals, markets, anywhere. It’s a very dangerous situation.”

Videos uploaded on social media showed dozens of men, women and children fleeing with only the clothes on their backs while seeking refuge in rice and paddy fields.

Security has deteriorated sharply in Rakhine since Aung San Suu Kyi’s government sent thousands of troops into Rohingya villages and hamlets last October after nine policemen were killed by suspected Rohingya armed group in attacks on border posts.

The security forces’ offensive has been beset by allegations of arson, killings and rape; and forced more than 87,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh.

Matthew Smith, chief executive officer at Fortify Rights, a human rights group, said with the “authorities treating all Rohingya as combatants”, the government’s account of the violence would be “dubious at best”.

“The government has refused to cooperate with a UN fact-finding Mission on Rakhine and there are serious allegations of the military attacking unarmed civilians,” he told Al Jazeera on Sunday.

“A lot of people are on the run and they need serious protection and the authorities have not made it easy to help them.”

Rakhine state is home to most of Myanmar’s 1.1 million Rohingya, who live largely in abject poverty and face widespread discrimination by the Buddhist majority.

The minority are widely reviled as illegal migrants from Bangladesh, despite having lived in the area for generations.

They have been rendered stateless by the government and the UN believes the army’s crackdown may amount to ethnic cleansing – a charge the government of Aung San Suu Kyi vehemently denies.

PV Sindhu claims silver after gruelling, epic final

August 28, 2017 by Nasheman

Glasgow: PV Sindhu’s gallant effort to become India’s first ever World Champion ended in a heart- wrenching defeat against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in an epic final, here today. In the longest match of the tournament, which tested the physical and mental strength of both the players, Sindhu lost 19-21 22-20 20-22 after battling hard for one hour and 49 minutes.

Their bodies were falling apart as the match progressed but both Sindhu and Okuhara used every ounce of energy left in them to make it an epic contest. After closing the second game by winning an incredible 73-shot rally, Sindhu saved one championship point in the decider but it was the Rio Olympic bronze medallist who had the last laugh.

For India, it still is a historic edition since for the first time country’s shuttler are returning with two medals. Saina Nehwal won a bronze yesterday after losing her semifinal. India had one silver and four bronze in the World Championships before this edition.

Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to win a medal when he took a bronze in the men’s singles in 1983 before the women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa bagged another bronze in 2011. Rio Olympic silver medallist Sindhu came into the match with a 3-all head-to-head record against Okuhara. But the Indian had an upper hand in their last two meetings — Rio Olympics and 2017 Singapore Open.

Sindhu, seeded fourth, was a little sluggish to start with and was 3-5 at one point but she managed to reel off eight points on the trot to grab an 11-5 lead at the break. The Indian used her height to good use, retrieving the shuttles quickly and started using her cross court returns to trouble the Japanese.

Sindhu showed good anticipation and used deception well to move to a 13-8 lead but the pint-sized Japanese changed gears and started dictating the rallies. She first clawed back to 14-14 when Sindhu faltered with her return serve before grabbing the lead. Okuhara continued to move ahead, reaching 18-14 after winning 10 of the 13 points after the interval. However, the Japanese committed a few unforced errors, which helped Sindhu to level par at 19-19.

Sindhu, then sent one to the net to hand over the game point to Okuhara, who pocketed the opening game when the Indian hit long. After the change of side, Okuhara struggled to control her lifts and also miscued a few shots as Sindhu led 5-1 when her rival’s smash found the net. Sindhu made some sound judgements at the baseline and tried to be patient on the court to extend the lead to 9-3.

However, Sindhu failed to reach for a low forehand return at forecourt and sent the shuttle wide thrice as Okuhara reached 7-9 before unleashing a down the line smash. A net error stopped Okuhara’s run as Sindhu eventually held a 11-8 lead at the interval when her rival again went wide.

At 15-13, another exceptional rally unfolded with Sindhu making the Japanese run to the deep corners and even though Okuhara made some remarkable retrieves she miscued a shot at the forecourt as Sindhu led 16-13.

Okuhara brought more power to her smashes to breach Sindhu’s defence and created acute angles with her wrist to reduce the margin to 16-17. Two backhand returns and a block at the net helped Sindhu move to 18-16. An extraordinary net return gave her another point and she grabbed the game point when Okuhara went long.

Not ready to give up, Okuhara fell back on her extraordinary net game to save three game points. Sindhu then won a point by pushing the shuttle at the back of the court. What ensued next was a 73-shot long and exhausting rally which Sindhu managed to win when Okuhara’s return found the net and she collapsed on the ground, drained completely.

In the decider, Okuhara opened up a 5-1 lead early on as Sindhu looked a tad exhuasted but some clever returns near the net helped the Indian claw back at 5-5. The momentum shifted again in Indian’s favour as she started dominating the rallies and reached the break at 11-9 when Okuhara hit wide. After the change of sides, Okuhara erased the deficit with a backhand body smash and a forehand return. Sindhu won another long rally with an onrushing smash but she lost her second video referrel as Okuhara led 13-12.

They moved neck and neck till 17-17 before the Indian grabbed a 19-17 lead when Okuhara hit wide. The Japanese produced a perfect cross court reverse slice and then unleashed another cross court smash to once again level par. A net error from Sindhu handed a match point to Okuhara but the Indian saved it after winning another long rally, following a bad leave at the baseline by Okuhara.

The Japanese grabbed the match point again when Sindhu found the net and she used it this time with a perfect return on Sindhu’s backhand to become the first shuttler from her country to win the World Championship. Sindh had reached the final after beating World No 10 Chen Yufei, late last night.

SC slams Gujarat government for slow trial in Asaram Bapu rape case

August 28, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today questioned the Gujarat government over the slow pace of trial in the rape case involving self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

A bench comprising justices N V Ramanna and Amitava Roy asked the state government why the victim has not been examined till now.

It asked the state government to file an affidavit in this regard and posted the matter for further hearing after Diwali.

The apex court had on April 12 asked the trial court in Gujarat to expedite the recording of evidence of prosecution witnesses in a sexual assault case lodged by two Surat-based sisters against the self-styled godman.

The court had asked the Surat trial court to record the testimonies of 46 remaining prosecution witnesses including the alleged rape victims.

Earlier, the top court had refused to grant bail to Asaram on various grounds including his poor health in two separate sexual assault cases lodged in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The apex court, while dismissing his bail plea on January 30, had observed that Asaram had placed a “fictitious document” to persuade the court to grant him bail and had ordered registration of an FIR against those responsible for preparing and filing the alleged fake papers.

The two Surat-based sisters had lodged separate complaints against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, accusing them of rape and illegal confinement, among other charges.

The elder sister, in her complaint against Asaram, had accused him of repeated sexual assaults between 2001 and 2006 when she was staying at his ashram near Ahmedabad.

In the case in Rajasthan, a teenage girl had accused him of sexual assault at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur. The girl, who belonged to Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was a student living in the ashram.

The apex court had noted that trial in the matter was unnecessarily prolonged and the prosecution witnesses were being attacked, which led to the death of two witnesses.

The apex court had on November 18 last year sought the response of the Centre and five states on a plea seeking a CBI probe into the alleged murder of children and attacks on ten witnesses in the Asaram rape cases.

Asaram was arrested by Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013 and has been in jail since then.

Ram Rahim Gets 10 Years In Jail For Rape, Cried In Court

August 28, 2017 by Nasheman

Chandigarh: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, convicted of raping two women disciples, was on Monday August 28 sentenced to ten years in jail.

Special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh allotted 10 minutes each to both sides to put forth their arguments.

The prosecution demanded maximum punishment for Ram Rahim Singh, while the defence lawyer, S K Garg Narwana argued that the judge should take a lenient view since the Dera Sauda chief has worked for the welfare of people.

According to reports, Ram Rahim broke down in the court as the quantum of punishment was read out.

After the sentencing, Ram Rahim was taken for a medical check-up, given a jail uniform and put in a cell.

Reports of sporadic violence trickled through even before the sentence was read out. Two cars were torched by Dera Sacha Sauda supporters in Phoolka area of Haryana’s Sirsa, the sect’s headquarters.

The quantum of punishment was pronounced by a CBI court specially set up inside the jail premises in Sunaria, about 70 km from Delhi, where Ram Rahim has been lodged after his conviction on Friday.

Fearing a repeat of the violence that erupted soon after the court’s verdict in the rape case on August 25, in which over 30 people died, the authorities in Haryana on Monday issued shoot at sight orders in and around the District Jail near Rohtak ahead of Ram Rahim’s sentencing.

Chairperson of the Dera, Vipassana Insan, has appealed to followers to peacefully abide by the judgement.

Earlier in the day, Rohtak range Inspector General (IG) of Police Navdeep Singh Virk said: “We are on top of the situation. Adequate security arrangements are in place. If anyone tries to disobey the law, he will be shot at.”

Virk said 28 companies of paramilitary forces, along with Haryana Police personnel, have been deployed in Rohtak.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court judge Jagdeep Singh, who had on Friday held the Dera chief guilty of rape and criminal intimidation of two of his female disciples in 2002, was flown to Rohtak on Monday for announcing the sentence.

The sect chief has been convicted on two counts for rape (Section 376 IPC), criminal intimidation (Section 506 IPC) and Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).

The minimum punishment for rape is seven years which may extend till life (term). The other sections have imprisonment for two and one years, respectively.

The district jail premises, about 10 km from Rohtak town, have been completely cordoned off by security forces, including the paramilitary and Haryana Police.

The Army has been kept on stand-by. No movement of people, other than those authorized, will be allowed within a distance of 10 km from the prison premises.

“We are fully prepared for any situation. The Army has been kept on stand-by,” Haryana Director General of police (DGP) B.S. Sandhu said.

The security forces in Haryana and Punjab were again on high alert on Monday as both states braced for the sentencing.

Curfew continued to be in place on Monday in Haryana’s Sirsa town, where the sect’s headquarters are located. The sect has lakhs of followers in the two states.
