Fire breaks out in London’s Camden Lock Market

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

London Fire Brigade says more than 70 firefighters called in to tackle the blaze in north London.

by Al Jazeera

Dozens of firefighters poured water onto a big fire at Camden Lock Market, which is a popular tourist destination in north London.

The London Fire Brigade said 10 firetrucks and 70 firefighters had been sent to the site shortly after midnight on Sunday when a blaze erupted near Camden Stables.

It said three floors and the roof of a building within the complex were on fire.

Ambulance crews also rushed to the scene, but authorities said no injuries had been reported.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called on Monday at 12.10am to Camden Lock Market to reports of a fire.

“London Fire Brigade were already at the scene when officers arrived. It is unknown at this stage if any persons are injured, we await update.”

The market is very popular with tourists and Londoners, who are drawn to the area by the shopping and nightlife on offer.

“The fire was moving very fast,” said witness Joan Ribes. “People were watching, but we were scared the building could explode at any time since there are restaurants with kitchens nearby.”

A different part of the market complex was ravaged by a fire in 2008, and vendors were not able to operate for several months.

In June, a fire engulfed the Grenfell Tower in west London, killing at least 79 people.

Pakistan court resumes Sharif ‘corruption’ hearings

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family accused of illegally profiting from his position as PM during the 1990s.

Nawaz-Sharif

by Al Jazeera

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s Supreme Court has resumed deliberations in a corruption case that could unseat Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, after investigators tasked with probing the allegations submitted their findings to judges on Monday.

The Joint Investigative Team (JIT), consisting of investigators from Pakistan’s police, military and financial regulators spent 60 days gathering evidence and questioning witnesses regarding the prime minister’s family’s assets.

Sharif himself appeared before the inquiry on June 15, while his sons Hassan and Hussain were questioned multiple times during the course of proceedings. Maryam Nawaz, Sharif’s daughter and political heir apparent, was also questioned.

The JIT submitted its report, along with two boxes of evidence, to the apex court on Monday morning amid tight security.

The court adjourned Monday’s proceedings until July 17, when lawyers for both sides will be given a chance to present their arguments on the investigating team’s findings.

Corruption allegations

The allegations focus on Sharif’s previous two terms as prime minister in the 1990s, with opposition politician Imran Khan and others alleging that Sharif and his family illegally profited from his position.

The 2016 leak of 11.5 million documents from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca – dubbed the Panama Papers – showed that three of Sharif’s children were listed as beneficiaries for three offshore companies registered in the British Virgin Islands.

The documents showed these companies were involved in a 2007 loan of $13.8m, made using high-value Sharif-owned properties in the United Kingdom as collateral, and a separate 2007 transaction amounting to $11.2m.

Owning off-shore companies is not illegal in Pakistan, but Sharif’s political opponents allege the Sharif properties in London were obtained through corrupt means and that he did not fully declare his assets to tax authorities.

The probe has expanded to include corruption allegations regarding the sale and purchase of various industrial units in Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Sharif denies any wrongdoing, saying the sources all of his family’s assets can be legally accounted for.

Political career in balance

On Saturday, Sharif appeared to take a defensive stance prior to the inquiry report’s submission, with leaders from his PML-N party vowing to reject the report as it did not include testimony from former Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

Sharif contends that the former Qatari prime minister’s father was a business partner, and that the apartments in London were bought using funds transferred from Qatar.

Sheikh Al Thani was invited to testify before the inquiry, or to record his testimony at the Pakistani embassy in Qatar.

He rejected the invitation, saying he was not subject to Pakistani law, but invited investigators to visit him in the Qatari capital Doha to record a statement. The investigators did not do so.

In a related development, a case was registered on Monday against the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chief Zafar Hijazi for tampering with records of Sharif-owned business while the investigating team was completing its inquiry.

With the Supreme Court now taking up the case once more, Sharif’s political career hangs in the balance. If the court deems him to have hidden assets or not satisfactorily explained the source of his funds, it could disqualify him from holding public office.

In such a case, he would be removed from office, with members of parliament tasked with electing a new prime minister.

Sharif’s PML-N party holds a comfortable majority in parliament and in Punjab, the country’s most populous province, but any disqualification of the party chief would be a huge blow to the party ahead of a scheduled general election next year.

Accused in Junaid Khan’s murder case has confessed: Police

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Junaid Khan

New Delhi: The police on Sunday once again claimed that the lynching of Junaid had nothing to do with beef. Addressing a press conference after the arrest of the key accused, Government Railway Police SP Kamaldeep said he has confessed to stabbing the 16-year-old on the Delhi-Mathura train during police interrogation, but did not give any statement on beef. “There is no case about beef,” he said.

Naresh Rath, a security guard who worked in Delhi, was arrested on Saturday from Maharashtra’s Dhule after police received a tip-off that he had been hiding at a relative’s house there for the past two weeks. The SP said that police will produce him before a magistrate here on Sunday and will seek three-days in police custody.

Junaid’s murder, on a local train near Ballabgarh on June 22, had triggered nationwide outrage with several coming out on the streets in protest.

The 16-year-old boy had succumbed to his injuries after nobody helped him reach a hospital, according to his brother Haseeb. Haseeb also said that his skull cap was flung, his beard pulled, while the crowd hurled abuses at them.

According to the police, Naresh, who is in his thirties, has confessed that the knife with which Junaid was stabbed was in his hand. However, the murder weapon has still not been recovered.

He told the police that he was from Faridabad and took the local train in which the crime took place on a daily basis. He had boarded the local on that day from Shivaji Bridge station and had an argument with Junaid and his brothers Haseem and Shakil over the seats.

Haseem said that even after the matter was resolved, Naresh and the others followed him to the other compartment and passed racial slurs like ‘anti-national’ and ‘beef-eater’ at them. He added that the men also accused them of carrying beef.

It was Haseem who helped identify Naresh, after which cops prepared a sketch. Police said that they will now put him in a line-up before the eyewitnesses to confirm that he was at the crime scene. The police may also take a ride on the local train to construct a sequence of events.

Earlier, the police had arrested several people, including a 50-year-old Delhi government employee, in connection with the murder.

Junaid’s father Jalaluddin told CNN-News18 that he had just come to know of arrest and the police were bringing the accused back to Delhi. “I thank the media for continuously covering this story and the police for their pursuit of the murderer,” he said, adding that everybody who was behind his son’s killing should be arrested as soon as possible.

Exhorting the government to bring an anti-lynching law, Jalaluddin said: “I urge the government to ensure such incidents don’t occur again. It was my Junaid this time. It could be anybody’s Junaid next.”

Over 100 crosses, plaques vandalised at Goa cemetery

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Crosses

Panaji: Over 100 crosses and plaques at a cemetery in South Goa were desecrated in the wee hours of Monday, police said.

Police sources said that a CCTV camera installed at the Guardian Angel Catholic cemetery in Curchorem village, 45 km from here, was damaged before the vandals went around indiscriminately desecrating crosses and plaques fixed atop graves.

Speaking to IANS, Deputy Inspector General of Police Rupinder Kumar said: “We are at the site right now,” as he took stock of the situation.

This is the fourth such incident in the last one month involving desecration of religious artefacts.

The Goa Police has already formed a special team to crack the series of desecrations, which Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said was being carried out by people with vested interests to disturb communal harmony in the state.

Amid Sikkim row, Congress admits Rahul Gandhi met Chinese envoy

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Rahul-Gandhi

New Delhi: After initially denying and calling it “fake news”, the Congress on Monday admitted that party Vice President Rahul Gandhi did meet the Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui last week, seeking to put to rest a controversy over the meeting.

“Various ambassadors and envoys keep meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi from time to time on courtesy basis, particularly those of G5 nations as also of the neighbouring countries…be it Chinese ambassador or Bhutanese ambassador or former NSA Shiv Shankar Menon,” party spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

Interestingly, hours earlier Surjewala had tweeted denying such a meeting between Gandhi and the Chinese envoy when some news channels went on air with the report.

He had alleged in the morning that the report was “planted” by the External Affairs Ministry and Intelligence Bureau sources. “They should re-verify that we still have diplomatic relations with all our neighbours,” Surjewala had said.

However, later in the day Surjewala had no explanation on why the denial was issued in the morning.

He sought to clarify that his statement that it was fake news was in the context of news channels terming the meeting as “anti-national”.

Significantly, the Chinese embassy which had posted on its website about the July 8 meeting between Gandhi and Luo, later withdrew it.

In the afternoon statement Surjewala said: “Nobody should try to sensationalise such normal courtesy calls to term them as events like the ‘sources’ from the Home Ministry are trying to do.”

“Rahul Gandhi as other opposition leaders are fully aware of our national interests and are concerned about the grave situation on the Indo-Chinese border as also the situation arising in Bhutan and Sikkim,” he added.

Speaking more specifically, he said: “So, the envoys met Rahul Gandhi, not only the Chinese envoy, but also the Bhutanese envoy, as also former National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon,” he said.

Last week, around the time Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Hamburg, Rahul Gandhi had questioned the “silence” of the Prime Minister on the border stand-off.

Delhi BJP leader shares Gujarat riots photo claiming it’s from Bengal

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

nupur sharma bjp fake

New Delhi: Delhi BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma came under fire from Twitter users for allegedly passing off a picture of the 2002 Gujarat riots as that of the violence in West Bengal’s Basirhat.

“Since trolls spent a sleepless night covering-up Basirhat violence, sharing media pics of the riots. Hope they report this to @WBPolice too,” Sharma posted on the micro- blogging site and attached an image of charred vehicles along with it.

The twiterrati, however, pointed out to her that the image was from 2002 and accused her of spreading a rumour.

Sharma, in a defiant tone, said the photo reflected the reality of Bengal, irrespective of the place. “I received a flyer from organisers of Save Bengal protests and I put it out. This has woken up the people in Lutyen’s Delhi who have maintained a stoic silence on Bengal till now,” added the leader. ”

Many Twitter users tried to draw the attention of the Delhi Police towards the tweet and demanded that she be arrested.

“Requesting @WBPolice to take my tweet as a Complaint against @NupurSharmaBJP for her fake and provocative posts and Arrest her immediately,” said a Twitter user. “Can’t trust any BJP handle these days. Films, old riots all is being passed off as Bengal,” said another.

Some even asked why Twitter didn’t take action against such people.

But, Sharma begged to differ on the subject. “There are questions being asked on the unrelated picture, but why is there reaction on the riots in Bengal or on minority appeasement that is happening there.”

Nearly 6,000 NGOs could lose licence to receive foreign donations

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

rajnath singh

New Delhi: Nearly 6,000 NGOs could lose their licence to receive foreign donations with the home ministry serving them show cause notices for not filing annual income and expenditure records for five consecutive years, an official said today.

The show cause notices were issued on July 8 and the NGOs have time till July 23 to give their reply.

In May this year, 18,523 NGOs were given a one-time opportunity by the home ministry to give details of their income and expenses by June 14.

These NGOs, registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, or FCRA, that allows them to receive foreign donations, were told to submit their annual returns for five years — 2010-11 to 2014-15.

The home ministry said in a circular that as a one time measure, all NGOs were given an opportunity for one month to file their missing annual returns by June 14 without paying any penalty. Email and SMS alerts were also sent to them regularly for one month beginning mid-May.

“However, in spite of sufficient and adequate notice, it has been observed that 5,922 associations have not uploaded their annual returns for three or more than three years within the stipulated time given in the notice,” the circular said.

All these NGOs were given show cause notices on July 8 on why their FCRA registration may not be cancelled under the FCRA.

The associations have been requested to furnish their replies, if any, by July 23, failing which it will be presumed that they have nothing to say and action as proposed will be taken by the home ministry as per FCRA, it said.

According to the FCRA, the renewal of registration for receiving foreign funds cannot be granted unless the annual returns are uploaded on the FCRA website by the organisation.

Over 20,000 NGOs are registered under the FCRA.

In November 2016, the government had directed more than 11,000 NGOs to file applications for renewal of registration by February 28, 2017.

Of the above, 3,500 NGOs filed applications for renewal till February 2017. Registration of more than 7,000 NGOs were deemed expired due to non-filing of renewal applications.

Mallya fails to appear before SC in contempt case

July 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Vijay Mallya. Photo: Reuters

New Delhi: Embattled businessman Vijay Mallya, who was held guilty of contempt, today failed to make a personal appearance before the Supreme Court despite being directed to do so.

A bench comprising of Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit fixed the matter for hearing on July 14 and sought the assistance of the Solicitor General in the case.

The apex court had on May 9 held Mallya, who is presently in the United Kingdom, guilty of contempt on a plea by the consortium of lender banks, led by the State Bank of India, for his failure to furnish details of all his Indian as well as offshore assets.

It had directed Mallya to appear before it today to argue on the quantum of punishment.

The offence of contempt of court entails a maximum imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of upto Rs 2,000 or both.

India had recently asked Britain to ensure early extradition of Mallya, who is an accused in a bank loan default case of over Rs 9,000 crore involving his defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The apex court’s order had come on a plea by the consortium of banks, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), which had said that Mallya had allegedly transferred USD 40 million received from British firm Diageo to his children in “flagrant violation” of various judicial orders.

The banks had argued before the court that Mallya had wilfully disobeyed the orders and made “vague” disclosure about his assets.

The top court had on March 9 asked the liquor baron about the “truthfulness” of the disclosure of assets by him and the transfer of money to his children.

The bench had reserved its order on two pleas of lending banks seeking contempt action and a direction to Mallya to deposit USD 40 million received from offshore firm Diageo respectively.

The banks have alleged that Mallya had concealed the facts and diverted the money to his son Siddharth Mallya and daughters Leanna Mallya and Tanya Mallya in “flagrant violation” of the orders passed by the Karnataka High Court.

In October last year, the court had rapped Mallya for not making full disclosure of his overseas properties and had asked him to do so within a month.

The bench had also pulled up Mallya for not giving details of USD 40 million which he had allegedly received from Diageo in February last year, saying it was of the “prima facie view” that proper disclosure as per its earlier order was not made.

The banks had on August 29 last year told the Supreme Court that Mallya had deliberately not made full disclosure of his assets including the USD 40 million he received on February 25 from Diageo.

BEN AFFLECK DOESN’T WANT TO BE A BATMAN ANYMORE

When it comes to Ben Affleck, you have to take the good with the bad. The good would be his remarkable career as a multi – Oscar – winning screenwriter & director, coupled with the fact that he’s freakin’ Batman. And the bad would be that his reputation as something of a self – important d -bag seems to have a firm foundation – coupled with the fact that he’s aided and abetted Zach Snyder in somehow making Batman boring as hell. Fortunately, Ben Affleck is more self – aware than your typical A – lister, and it seems that after spending several months in quiet contemplation Ben Affleck has decided that it may be time to bring his caped crusadering career to a close. Ben Affleck is reportedly attempting to wriggle out of his contract with Warner Bros. The rumors began when Ben Affleck decided to step down from directing a standalone DC flick – tentatively and super imaginatively tilted The Batman – in which he would once again portray the title hero. But Ben Affeck avers that he wants to step away from the franchise altogether.
