World Heritage Committee Calls on Israel to Stop Illegal Practices in East Jerusalem

July 6, 2017 by Nasheman

Israeli police storm Al-Aqsa Mosque

by The Jordan Times

Amman: The UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee decision which the agency adopted on Tuesday night on the old town of Jerusalem and its walls is a result of active Jordanian diplomacy to defend the city, a senior official said.

Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani said on Wednesday that Jordan’s pro-Jerusalem efforts are part of Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian sites in the holy city.

Participants in the World Heritage Committee’s 41st session in Krakow, Poland, called on Israel, the occupying power, to stop persistent excavations, tunnelling, works, projects and other illegal practices in East Jerusalem and especially in the Old City.

They also decided to keep Jerusalem’s Old City and its historic walls on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The resolution stated that all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying power, which have altered or purport to alter the character and status of the holy city of Jerusalem, and in particular, the “basic law” on Jerusalem, are null and void and must be rescinded forthwith.

Momani, who is also the government spokesperson, added that the decision supports all previous decisions taken by the committee and UNESCO’s executive council, which are considered big gains for Jordan as it endeavours to preserve Jerusalem, a role that the Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty acknowledged for the Kingdom in Jerusalem, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He also said that the decision, which Jordan presented jointly with Palestine through the Arab group at the committee, emphasised that all Israeli procedures and violations in East Jerusalem are null and void under the international law.

The decision also supports previous decisions, including the one when the agency adopted the names Al Aqsa Mosque and Al Haram Al Sharif as synonyms, while under another resolution, UNESCO reaffirmed that the Magharbeh Gate hill is an integral part of Al Aqsa Mosque, he added.

The resolution also called on Israel, the occupying power, not to hinder the implementation of Hashemite construction projects at Al Aqsa Mosque and to reopen Al Rahmah Gate of the mosque, which Israel has been closing since 2003.

The Goods & Services Tax (GST) came into effect from 1st Jul, 2017. Kamal Haasan pointed out that except Tamil Nadu, other neighbouring Southern States have desisted from levying additional tax on cinema over & about GST. “In Kerala, the film industry requested the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and he, through his Finance Minister, quickly announced that Kerala will not be levying anymore taxes on the already beleaguered film business,” he averred. “Karnataka has gone even further to facilitate the well being of the film Industry. India rise to 96 in FIFA rankings, best in two decades

July 6, 2017 by Nasheman

India FIFA

New Delhi: The Indian football team today rose to the 96th spot in the latest FIFA rankings, its best- ever in the last two decades and the second best overall.

As far as Asia is concerned, India are the 12th highest ranked team in the continent, while Iran lead the chart at the 23rd spot. India’s best-ever FIFA ranking till date stays 94, which was attained in February 1996, while 99 was India’s second- best, achieved in November 1993.

The national team has been on an upsurge with a string of impressive results leading to a climb of 77 places over the last two years. The team has now won 13 of its last 15 matches and is unbeaten in the last eight games (including the unofficial match against Bhutan).

India were ranked 171 when Stephen Constantine took over as national coach for the second time in February 2015 and slipped further to 173rd in March 2015 in the FIFA ladder even before the gaffer could have his first game in charge against Nepal, which India eventually won 2-0 on aggregate.

Congratulating the team, All India Football Federation president Praful Patel said: “It’s a giant leap of faith for Indian football. Two years back, we were 173 and now we have reached our second best FIFA ranking ever. The leap signifies the potential of Indian football. Congratulations to the national team boys, the coach, the staff and all in AIFF.”

AIFF general secretary Kushal Das stated: “This comes as a huge boost ahead of our next AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Macau on September 5, 2017. Hats off to the team for giving it their all in achieving this milestone. Qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 stays our top priority.”

Confederations Cup champions and reigning world champions Germany have overtaken Brazil to be the top team in the world and are followed by Argentina at third spot, Portugal and Switzerland.

Constantine said: “When I took over, I had mentioned that my target was to bring India below 100. I am happy to have played a small part in this process. Kudos to the boys, the staff and a big thank you to my colleagues in AIFF for supporting us all throughout. I also need to thank Mr. Patel and Mr. Das for their trust in allowing me to do things in the manner I wanted.”

“But the present FIFA spot doesn’t mean that we have achieved much. We need to stay focused on the upcoming challenges.” A qualification spot in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 is what the AIFF aims at this moment. That would be India’s second AFC Asian Cup stint in eight years, the last being in Doha in 2011.

Xi-Modi

Beijing: China today said the “atmosphere” was “not right” for a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, amidst a standoff between the armies of the two countries in the Sikkim section.

“The atmosphere is not right for a bilateral meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Modi,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry official said ahead of the G20 Summit in the German city of Hamburg from tomorrow.

Doka La is the Indian name for the region which Bhutan recognises as Dokalam, while China claims it as part of its Donglang region.

There were reports that Modi and Xi may meet on the sidelines of the G20 Summit to resolve the standoff.

China’s state-run media yesterday had quoted Chinese analysts as saying that Beijing would be forced to use a “military way” to end the standoff in the Sikkim sector if India refuses to listen to the “historical lessons” being offered by it.

India & Hong Kong: Hong Kong-based RYTHM Foundation which has been associated with the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) has further decided to strengthen its support to the fight against cancer in India among other worthy causes.

RYTHM Foundation, the corporate social responsibilityarm of direct selling company QNet, and CPAA came together in late 2016 thanks to the awareness created by Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, who has been a patron of CPAA for over a decade. CPAA is a non profit organisation dedicated to the total management of cancer as a disease for last 48 years.

In September last year, Vivek Oberoi announced a partnership between the CPAA and RYTHM Foundation for the Adopt-a-Patient Scheme to fund the treatment of 20 children with cancer, from low income families. Since the launch of the project, children chosen by the CPAA between the ages of 2 and 16 have been undergoing treatment at leading hospitals in Mumbai.

In May this year, the CPAA announced that 19 of the children were now on the road to recovery and undergoing maintanence therapy. Recently, the CPAA was invited to QNet’s annual global convention in Malaysia to speak about their work and they brought with them three brave young warriors, Divyanshu, Lahu, and Aakanksha, who are now cancer free.

Vivek Oberoi accompanied CPAA and the children and thanked RYTHM Foundation for its support. Vivek Oberoi said “Because of RYTHM Foundation’s support, the CPAA was able to help these children and their families through the toughest period of their lives. And now, they are here in Malaysia, on their very first international trip to thanks to the generosity of RYTHM.”

“Thank you Vivek Bhaiya, RYTHM and CPAA for helping us,” chorused the kids to the thunderous applause of 20,000 people from around the world who had gathered at the 5-day convention.

RYTHM Foundation is currently in discussions with CPAA to fund a project for early detection of cancer, as part of its commitment to support community well being initiatives in India.

“RYTHM stands for Raise Yourself To Help Mankind, which is the underlying principle of the Foundation that believes in helping people become self-empowered, in order to have a positive impact in society. We could not have found a better partner for our first major venture into India than CPAA which has been working passionately and relentlessly towardscancer treatment and awareness, especially for patients and families from the lower economic strata.”Said Richard E Zinkiewicz, Trustee of RYTHM Foundation.

Anita Peter, Executive Director of CPAAsaid, “It gives us immense pleasure to be associated RYTHM Foundation who has not only given a new life and hope to our cancer stricken kids but will also join hands with CPAA to eradicate cancer.”

In the past, the Foundation has partnered with Avalokiteswara Trust to build 15 libraries in rural schools in the remote villages of Ladakh region and has also donated USD 40,000 to the Akshaya Trust in Madurai to build a shelter for the homeless. Earlier in 2008, the foundation donated USD 30,000 towards UNICEF’s water and sanitation programme in the flood affected districts of Bihar. The partnership with CPAAis amongstthe first major long term partnershipsRYTHM Foundation will be entering into in India.

“We are committing to allocate $1 mllion over the next 3-5 years towards community well being projects in India in line with the government’s health initiatives through active participation in the Swastha Bharat Abhiyaanprogram,”Zinkiewicz added.

A series of community well-being initiatives have already been implemented through QNet in Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Telangana.
