Three Jallikattu spectators die in Tamil Nadu

January 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Chennai: Three spectators of Jallikattu or bull taming sport were killed and several injured at different places in Tamil Nadu when bulls attacked them, according to reports reaching here.

In a village in Sivaganga district — around 500 km from here — two persons were killed when a bull attacked them on being released. Around 50 persons were injured in the attack.

Similarly, in a Jallikattu in Trichy district, around 350 km from here, one spectator was killed and several were injured in a bull’s attack.

Meanwhile, at Alanganallur in Madurai district, Jallikattu was jointly flagged off by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam.

Around 1,000 bulls and over 1,200 bull tamers participated in the event.

Jallikattu is Tamil Nadu’s traditional sport which is part of Pongal festivities.

The rules of the sport say that a bull tamer will be awarded a prize if he hangs on to the hump of the animal for a certain period of time.

The winning bull tamers and the owners of untamed bulls would be awarded prizes like cash, consumer durables, two wheelers and others.

This year, two cars has been added to the prize list for the Allanganallur event.

After mass protests last year against banning the sport, Jallikattu was held following the passing of an ordinance amending the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The first Jallikattu event of this year was held in Madurai on January 14.

There is also an energetic dance performance every year from Lissy, Khushbu, Suhasini and team, which we look forward to. Revathy’s performance to “Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh” was also memorable,” said Sumalatha Ambareesh.

Erdogan: US trying to form ‘terror army’ in Syria

January 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The US views the YPG as a highly effective fighting force in the fight against ISIL [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the US was working to form a “terror army” on his country’s southern border by training a new force in Syria that includes Kurdish fighters.

“What we are supposed to do is to drown this terror army before in comes into being,” he said in an address in the capital Ankara on Monday, calling the Kurdish fighters “backstabbers” who will point their weapons to the US in the future.

His comments came after reports revealed US’ plan to establish a 30,000-strong new border security force with the involvement of Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

According to media reports quoting US officials, the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL also known as ISIS) will recruit around half of the new force from the Syrian Defence Forces (SDF), an umbrella group of fighters dominated by the People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Ankara considers Kurdish YPG fighters as a “terrorist” organisation with links to the Kurdish fighters within Turkey that seek more autonomy. The US views the YPG as a highly effective fighting force against ISIL.

Erdogan said that Turkey’s armed forces had completed preparations for an operation against the Kurdish-controlled region of Afrin in northwest Syria and the town of Manbij.

He warned Turkey’s allies against helping “terrorists” in Syria and said: “We won’t be responsible for consequences.”

Turkish foreign ministry made a statement in the same line late on Sunday, saying that it was “wrong and objectionable” to cooperate with the YPG.

“The establishment of the so-called Syria Border Protection Force was not consulted with Turkey, which is a member of the coalition,” the Turkish foreign ministry said.

“To attribute such a unilateral step to the whole coalition is an extremely wrong move that could harm the fight against Daesh,” it added, using an alternative acronym for ISIL.

Turkish forces pounded US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria with artillery fire on Sunday, after the intention to establish a new force was announced.

Turkey carried out a military campaign called 2016 Euphrates Shield Operation, which targeted ISIL and the YPG. That eight-month battle officially ended in March 2017.

US’ YPG move
US President Donald Trump decided to arm YPG fighters, despite Turkey’s objections and a direct appeal from Erdogan at a White House meeting last May.

American arms shipments began before the offensive to recapture the city of Raqqa from ISIL. YPG played a prominent role in defeating the group in its former de facto capital in northern Syria late last year.

Tensions between the NATO allies remain high, despite Trump saying last November that Washington would no longer supply weapons to the YPG.

A senior Syrian Kurdish official said on Sunday that fighting between the YPG and Turkish forces was already under way.

“There are attacks and clashes on the border between Turkey and the People’s Protection Units YPG,” Hediye Yusuf said on Twitter.

She called Turkey’s operation against Afrin a “violation” that “undermines international efforts to reach a political solution in Syria”.

Ankara has been reinforcing its southern border by sending armoured vehicles, tanks, and heavy machine guns, according to local media.

Turkey has been working closely with Russia and Iran to end the nearly seven-year Syrian war, despite Moscow and Tehran supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad – and Ankara backing the anti-Assad opposition.

YPG is considered by Turkey to be a “terrorist group” with ties to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged a decades-long fight inside the country.

PKK is blacklisted as a terrorist organisation by Turkey and its Western allies. More than 40,000 people in Turkey have been killed since the 1980s after the PKK launched its rebellion.

Mangaluru: Two more arrested in Abdul Basheer murder case

January 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old man from Kottara Chowki, who was attacked allegedly in retaliation to the killing of a Hindu activist on January 3. Basheer, who was assaulted by four assailants succumbed to his injuries at a hospital here on January 7.

He was attacked at Kottara Chowki near here within hours after 28-year-old Deepak Rao, associated with Bajrang Dal and BJP, was hacked to death at Katipalla, triggering tension in the communally-sensitive Dakshina Kannada district.

Two people arrested yesterday have been identified as Lateesh (24) and Pushparaj (23), from neighbouring Kasaragod district in Kerala. Earlier four persons were arrested in connection with the murder.

A series of killings of Hindu activists in Dakshina Kannda has triggered a political slugfest between the ruling Congress and BJP in recent months

The BJP has alleged that the Congress government had allowed “jihadi forces” to have a field day and to indulge in “wanton killings” of Hindu workers in pursuance of its “vote-bank politics” and minority appeasement.

According to BJP, the number of Hindutva workers who have fallen to the “murderous agenda of jihadi forces” in the state has risen to 22 so far.

On the other hand, the Congress has charged the BJP with polarising the sensitive situation in the region with an aye on the upcoming Assembly polls, which are due early this year.

Goa files arguments at Mahadayi tribunal on dispute with Karnataka

January 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Panaji: The Goa government today filed a brief summary of arguments before the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal in Delhi amidst its dispute with Karnataka over the diversion of the river’s waters.

The hearing on Goa’s arguments against Karnataka’s proposed dams on the river will be heard in the first week of February.

Senior Counsel Atmaram Nadkarni, representing Goa before the tribunal, said a brief summary of arguments had been filed which runs into three volumes comprising 531 pages.

“The summary of arguments have been prepared topic wise. The first volume contains the case and pleadings of the state of Goa, along with excerpts of the evidence on hydrology placed by Goa through its witnesses,” Nadkarni explained.

The second volume contains arguments and submissions on the environmental aspect and the evidence placed by Goa on marine wild life, marine ecology and environmental flows, he said.

“The third volume contains specific arguments on various legal issues such as non-compliance of Karnataka to various statutory provisions and the international law on river disputes and diversion of water,” he added.

Nadkarni said Goa’s case was essentially to challenge the construction of 12 dams by Karnataka on the Mahadayi river and also oppose Karnataka’s proposal to divert Mahadayi waters to the Malaprabha reservoir.

He said Goa opposed these moves as it would result in a complete aquatic, marine and terrestrial ecology disaster and also deprive Goa of water for drinking, irrigation and industrial needs.

‘No immediate proposal to ban PFI in Karnataka’

January 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy Sunday said there was no immediate proposal before the government to ban Islamic outfit PFI and right wing outfits in the state.

“There is no such immediate proposal before us (government)…lot of discussions regarding this is going on.

The Chief Minister is on tour for about a month now, we will have discussion on the issue with the Chief Minister, also in the cabinet,” Reddy in Shivamogga.

His statement comes in the wake of demands to recommend for ban on Popular Front of India (PFI) and right wing organisations in the state.

BJP has been demanding a ban on PFI and its political wing SDPI, holding them responsible for a spate of killings of “Hindu activists” in the coastal Dakshina Kannada district.

But the PFI has blamed Sangh Parivar outfits for the killing of those from Muslim community in the region.

Noting that BJP was demanding a ban on PFI, the Home Minister said not only PFI, but Bajarang Dal, RSS and Sri Rama Sene were also involved in violence.

“Both sides were involved. Number of deaths due to violence might be slightly more this side or that side. If it (ban) has to be done, it should be for both sides, not just one side,” he said.

As the coastal region remained on edge over repeated incidents of communal tensions, Siddaramaiah had recently warned of “stringent” action against organisations instigating communal sentiments in the state.

Pointing out that power to ban any organisations lies with the Central government, Reddy said BJP should talk to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh or Prime Minister Narendra Modi and get PFI banned.

He said if political leaders remain silent, there would not be any violence in the region.

Only those Muslims will stay in India who embrace Hindu culture: BJP MLA

January 15, 2018 by Nasheman

A BJP legislator from Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh has landed himself in hot water after stating that once India becomes a “Hindu rashtra”, only those Muslims will stay in the country who assimilate into the Hindu culture.

“There are a very few Muslims who are patriotic. Once India becomes a Hindu rashtra (Hindu nation), Muslims who assimilate into our culture will stay in India. Those who will not are free to take asylum in any other country,” Bairia MLA Surendra Singh told reporters on Saturday night.

He also claimed that by 2024, India would become a Hindu nation. Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “avatar purush” (reincarnation of a deity), Singh said, “As the RSS completes 100 years in 2025, by 2024, India will become a Hindu rashtra. By the grace of god, India is going to be a global superpower thanks to the leadership of Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Not only will India become a ‘vishwa guru’, it will also become a Hindu rashtra by 2024.”

Taking a jibe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the BJP MLA said, “There are two sets of values in Rahul Gandhi – one is Italian, while the other one is Indian… He can never become the torchbearer of the Indian thought.” He said the Gandhi scion could coin any slogan to become the prime minister of the country, but he lacked the strength and values to make India strong. “His (Rahul Gandhi’s) is a mix of Indian and Italian culture,” Singh said and claimed that the Congress chief was not aware of what India and Indianness were all about.
