Syria: SDF reclaim territory hours after government capture

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) repelled a Syrian government attack on a string of villages along the Euphrates River in the eastern Deir Az Zor province.

A statement by the Kurdish-led SDF said on Sunday its fighters mounted a counter-offensive against troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, adding they were driven “far away” from the villages they had momentarily captured earlier in the day.

Syria’s official announced on Sunday that Syrian government forces seized four villages east of the Euphrates River.

A US army statement sent to Reuters news agency confirmed the attack on SDF forces by what it called “pro-regime forces” near Deir Az Zor city, and said the “coalition used established de-confliction channels to de-escalate the situation”, without elaborating.

“The coalition remains committed to our SDF partners in the campaign to defeat Daesh [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] in eastern Syria,” the statement said.

US air support?
The SDF statement, however, did not specify if the US coalition partook in the military operation. US forces have established a strong presence in eastern Syria, where much of the country’s oil and gas reserves are located.

A Western diplomatic source told Reuters that US coalition fighter jets participated in the counter-offensive against the Syrian troops, which included Iran-backed militias operating in the area. This was later confirmed by an SDF source.

The SDF, led by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), have assumed control of much of the territory east of the Euphrates since its recapture from ISIL.

The two sides have rarely clashed with one another as much of the attention had been directed at defeating ISIL, which dominated much of the area since it declared its caliphate in 2014.

Avoiding confrontation
The Russian-backed Syrian army has avoided direct confrontation with SDF forces in its campaign against ISIL and kept away from their areas east of the Euphrates, focusing on regaining territory from ISIL fighters west of the river.

Syrian civil war map: Who’s in control where
Earlier in February, US air strikes resulted in the death and injury of hundreds of pro-government forces, including Russian defence contractors who were advancing towards one of the largest SDF-controlled gas fields in the city of Deir Az Zor.

SDF forces accuse the Syrian government of attempting to disrupt US attempts to resume an imminent offensive against ISIL in several areas along the Euphrates River that are still under the group’s control.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on Thursday his country was looking to “re-energise” efforts against ISIL fighters in eastern Syria in the coming days.

Washington has said in recent days SDF soldiers were returning to the area to launch new operations aimed at defeating the armed group.

Meanwhile, SANA reported on Sunday that a deal had been reached for the evacuation of the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, where ISIL fighters have been holed up in southern Damascus.

The transfer of “terrorist groups” to rebel-held areas of northwestern Syria would begin on Monday, said SANA, without naming ISIL. There was no confirmation from armed groups in the area.

Syrian government forces continue to launch air strikes on ISIL-held pockets in Hajar al-Aswad, one of the neighbourhoods of the besieged Palestinian refugee camp.

Twin suicide bombers kill more than 20 in Afghanistan’s Kabul

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

At least 21 people, including six journalists, have been killed and dozens wounded after two explosions hit Kabul, according to Afghan health officials.

The blasts went off during rush hour on Monday morning in the Shash Darak area of the Afghan capital.

In the first explosion, a suicide bomber detonated himself close to the National Directorate of Security (NDS), the main Afghan intelligence agency, TOLO News quoted an interior ministry spokesman as saying.

In another explosion that followed 20 minutes later, a second suicide bomber targeted emergency medical workers and journalists who had arrived at the scene, Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said.

Glasse said six journalists who rushed to cover the aftermath of the first explosion were killed in the second blast.

A spokesperson for the Afghan health ministry said the attacks killed at least 21 people and wounded 27 others.

AFP news agency reported that its chief photographer in Kabul, Shah Marai, was among the fatalities.

An Al Jazeera photographer was also injured in the incident.
TOLO News also reported that two other journalists were wounded in the second blast.

There were fears that the death toll could rise.

“It’s a very grim morning here,” Al Jazeera’s Glasse said describing the situation in the Afghan capital.

She added that there are many fortified streets near the site of the attack.

“There’s a lot of security in that area – it’s not far from NATO headquarters – and security has been beefed up around the Afghan capital, but clearly they haven’t been able to stop these kind of attacks.”

The explosions on Monday come just a week after a blast hit a voter registration centre in Kabul, killing at least 57 people and wounding more than a hundred others.

Attacks have multiplied in recent days in advance of the long-delayed parliamentary and district council elections scheduled for October 20 this year.

“The series of attacks here in Kabul have made the Afghan capital most dangerous place in Afghanistan to be,” Al Jazeera’s Glasse said.

National Executive of Indian Youth Congress to be held today

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

The National Executive of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) will be held on Monday (April 30) at Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi beginning at 10:00 am.

There would be an emphasis on the need for women empowerment by increasing women representation/participation in politics, the theme for this year’s National Executive would be “WHY NOT HER”.

Amrish Ranjan Pandey, National Spokesperson, Indian Youth Congress told Hindusthan Samachar that in pursuance of this theme and as per the vision of Rahul Gandhi for the first time in the history of Indian Youth Congress, National Executive will have a significant number of participants from amongst its women leaders gathered from across the Country.

To achieve the objective of equality and empowerment through political participation, the Indian National Congress under the leadership of Late. Sh. Rajiv Gandhi mooted the provision for reservation of women in Panchayats and Nagar Palikas.

Even though the Indian National Congress made all efforts to provide adequate political representation for women was thwarted in Rajya Sabha in 1989, the same was passed by both houses of Parliament in 1993 as the 73rd and 74th Amendments to the Constitution.

More than 1.3 million constitutionally elected women, mostly from socially disadvantaged groups, took on the mantle of leadership to transform their communities and villages. Over the years, women have described this as a big opportunity to bring transformative changes to villages and urban area in India, working on issues transcending the practical needs of education, water, daycare, vaccination, birth control etc.

To further strengthen and empower the women of this country and to amplify their voices in the decision-making processes of our Country, the Indian National Congress through the incessant efforts of Smt Sonia Gandhi saw the passing of Women’s Reservation Bill or the Constitution (108th Amendment) Bill, 2008 in the upper house of Rajya Sabha. However, due to stiff opposition in Lok Sabha and subsequent disruptions, the bill could not be cleared in Lok Sabha.

In this backdrop, the National Executive of India Youth Congress will address on the measures to empower and strengthen women with special emphasis on increasing participation/representation for women in politics.

Other main agendas that will be taken up for discussion during the National Executive meeting will be as following:

Appraisal about the current situation of the Country and governance with a special emphasis on rising unemployment, failing businesses, inflation, attack and atrocities on Dalits, Adivasis and backwards.

Developing methods for spreading awareness among the general public regarding the false promises made by BJP during the previous election.

Developing strategies to highlight Government’s failure and discuss the response to tackle them.

The meeting will be chaired by Amarinder Singh Raja, National President, IYC and Krishna Allavaru, AICC Joint Secretary, Incharge, IYC. Several senior leaders of the party will also address the meeting.

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

Opener Chris Lynn’s unbeaten 62-run knock and Robin Uthappa’s (36) disciplined inning helped Kolkata Knight Riders beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Sunday.

The win, came after two straight losses, took Kolkata to fourth spot with eight points while Bangalore are at seventh spot with four points.

Chasing 176, the visitors got off to a perfect start as Lynn and Sunil Narine (27) forged 59-run partnership in 7.1 overs before the West Indian departed by M. Ashwin.

New batsman Uthappa and Lynn then played sensibly and punished the bad balls. The duo managed to take Kolkata past 100-run mark. But just when things seemed good in the middle, Uthappa was dismissed by Ashwin in the 13th over.

New batsman Nitish Rana (15), who was looking good at the crease, got retied hurt.

Middle-order batsmen Andre Russel (0) and Dinesh Karthik (23) were also sent packing soon but at that time Lynn has already put his team on the front foot and then went on to complete the proceeding in the last over with Shubman Gill (5 not out).

For Bangalore, M. Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each.

Earlier, A good opening stand followed by skipper Virat Kohli’s unbeaten half-century helped Royal Challengers Bangalore to post 175/4.

Put into bat, Bangalore started on a cautious note as openers Quinton de Kock (29 off 27) and Brendon McCullum (38 off 28) shared a 67-run partnership for the first wicket.

KKR spinner Kuldeep Yadav came up with the first breakthrough as he packed de Kock in the ninth over.

With the addition of just seven runs in Bangalore’s overall score of 67, Andre Russel jolted the hosts after dismissing McCullum and Manan Vohra (0) in the next over.

However, Kohli kept one end tight and added 65 runs for the fourth wicket with Mandeep Singh (19).

Mandeep however, didn’t show a fight and was dismissed on a Russel delivery in the 18th over with Bangalore’s score reading 140/4.

Hyderabad beat Rajasthan to claim top spot : IPL

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

Sunrisers Hyderabad dominated with both bat and ball to defeat Rajasthan Royals by 11 runs and rise to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table here on Sunday.

Electing to bat first, Hyderabad rode on excellent batting by Kane Williamson and Alex Hales to post 151/7 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Rajasthan could only manage to reach 140/6.

The win propelled Hyderabad to the top spot on the points table. The visitors now have 12 points from eight matches.

They rose one rung, displacing former champions Chennai Super Kings to the second spot. Kings XI Punjab are at the third position.

Both Chennai and Punjab are on 10 points, with only the net run rate separating the two teams.

Rajasthan’s chase was off to a poor start as opener Rahul Tripathi was bowled by Hyderabad pacer Sandeep Sharma in the third over.

Rajasthan skipper Ajinkya Rahane — the team’s other opener — led from the front, batting through the innings to remain unbeaten on 65 runs off 55 balls.

He posted a partnership of 59 runs off 44 balls with Sanju Samson to bring the hosts’ innings back on track after Tripathi’s departure.

Samson scored 40 runs off 30 balls before holing out to Hales at short mid-wicket while attempting to smash a deceptive slower ball by Siddarth Kaul out of the ground.

That seemed to take the fight out of the hosts as they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Kaul returned figures of 2/23 to emerge as the most successful among the Hyderabad bowlers.

Sandeep Sharma, Basil Thampi, Rashid Khan and Yusuf Pathan also bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, Hyderabad rode on excellent batting by Williamson and Hales to post 151/7 in their 20 overs.

Williamson smashed 63 runs off 43 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes. Hales scored 45 runs off 39 balls.

The two of them added 92 runs between them to lay the foundation of a big total after Hyderabad opener Shikhar Dhawan was bowled by Krishnappa Gowtham in the third over.

New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi brought the partnership to an end in the 15th over when he claimed his maiden IPL wicket in the form of Williamson.

That triggered a strong comeback by the hosts as the visitors’ middle and lower order failed to rise to the occasion.

West Indies pacer Jofra Archer was the most successful among the Rajasthan bowlers with figures of 3/26 in his four overs.

Brief scores:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 151/7 in 20 overs (Kane Williamson 63, Alex Hales 45; Jofra Archer 3/26) vs Rajasthan Royals: 140/6 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 65, Sanju Samson 40).
