India Intimate Fashion Week Season 2 to take place on April 22

The season 2 of India Intimate Fashion Week (IIFW), a fashion show dedicated to lingerie and Intimate wear, will be held on April 22 at The Leela hotel, here.

Some of the participating designers and brands are Hongking based Jewellery designer Mona Shroff, La Intimo show, Designer Rashmi Solanki, Melons India show, INIFD Bandra show and grand finale show by Filipino designer Jef Albea.

To add glamour to the show, “Commando 2” fame Bollywood actor Thakur Anoop Singh will walk at the fashion show.

“This year IIFW will also focus on the segment of inviting veteran industry experts in the jury to honour the proponents in the field of intimate, beach and bridal lingerie business.

“International business icons, trade honchos, e-commerce experts and some of famous names from the Indian Fashion Industry will grace the presence of the event,” Niraj Jawanjal, Founder and Ideator, IIFW said in a statement.

It will provide a platform for emerging and conventional brands spanning categories of lingerie, lounge wear, sleep wear, leg wear, lingerie accessories, men’s underwear, intimate, products and the like.

In addition, this year IIFW has a special show dedicated to plus-size lingerie.

Further explaining about India Intimate Fashion Week, Amit Pandey, Media Head and Associate Partner, IIFW said: “We had a very successful first edition and are excited to be back with the second edition of the fashion week that is sure to be larger, grandiose and entertaining.”

For dental pain relief opt for Ibuprofen over opioids: Study

Common painkiller ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) alone or in combination with acetaminophen are better at easing dental pain, than opioids, say researchers.

While using opioids help manage pain, they also run the risk of misuse or abuse, that can cause serious harm, including addiction, overdose and death.

According to the National Institutes of Health, each day, more than 115 Americans die as a result of an opioid overdose.

“What we know is that prescribing narcotics should be a last resort,” said Anita Aminoshariae, Associate Professor at the Case Western Reserve University in the US.

“No patient should go home in pain. That means that opioids are sometimes the best option, but certainly should not be the first option,” she added.

The study showed that opioids are not among the most effective — or longest lasting — options available for relief from acute dental pain.

For adults, a combination of 400 milligrams of ibuprofen and 1,000 milligrams of acetaminophen was superior to any opioid-containing medications.

“The best available data suggests that the use of nonsteroidal medications, with or without acetaminophen, offers the most favourable balance between benefits and harms, optimising efficacy while minimising acute adverse events,” Aminoshariae said.

The results, featuring in the Journal of the American Dental Association, evaluated the safety and efficacy of dozens of pain-relief options from more than 460 published studies.

Opioids and their drug combinations were found to account for the most adverse side effects — including drowsiness, respiratory depression, nausea/vomiting and constipation — in both children and adults.

Citing the American opioid epidemic, Aminoshariae said that health-care providers should take heed of the findings.

Australia surfing event cancelled due to shark attacks

A surfing event in an Australian state was called off on Wednesday due to multiple shark attacks that took place in the area earlier this week.

World Surf League (WSL) CEO Sophie Goldschmidt said that it was a difficult decision to cancel the popular Margaret River Pro event, but surfer and staff safety were paramount, reports Xinhua news agency.

The first incident occurred at Cobblestones beach in Gracetown when 37 year-old Alejandro Travaglini was mauled by a shark. He had to undergo emergency surgery on both legs.

Just hours later at a nearby beach known as Lefthanders, Jason Longgrass, 41, was also bitten on the leg.

Earlier that morning Surf Life Saving Western Australia reported several sightings of sharks in the area, including a four-metre Great White.

According to Australia’s Shark Smart website, a decomposing whale carcass nearby was likely to be what had attracted the predators.

Barred director set to return to Cannes Film Festival

Danish director Lars von Trier, who has been barred from the Cannes Film Festival since 2011 over his controversial comments about Adolf Hitler, will make a comeback at the gala in May.

Festival general delegate Thierry Fremaux has revealed that Avon Trier, 61, will return in 2018, reports theguardian.com.

Fremaux told a French radio statement, “There will, maybe, be an announcement…”

The filmmaker’s “The House That Jack Built”, which stars Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, has been linked with a slot at the festival for a long time.

The psychological thriller centres on the life of a serial killer in Washington over the space of a dozen years.

The director hasn’t been invited to Cannes since 2011 when his movie “Melancholia” screened in the festival’s main competition.

When he was asked about his German roots and his interest in the Nazi aesthetic at a press conference, Trier had delivered a controversial response.

He said at the time, “I thought I was a Jew for a long time, and I was very happy … But it turned out that I was not a Jew. And then I found out that I was really a Nazi because my family was German. Which also gave me some pleasure. What can I say?”

During the press conference, the movie’s star, Kirsten Dunst, urged the director to stop talking, but he continued with his explanation.

He said, “I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker at the end.”

“I think I understand the man. He’s not what you call a good guy, but I understand much about him, and I sympathise with him a little bit,” he added.

Don’t just want to push, but tear the envelope: Varun Dhawan

Basking in the glowing reviews of “October”, Varun Dhawan says he wants to continue seeking roles that are unique and “tear” the envelope.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Hello, am I speaking to the Supertar Varun Dhawan?

A. (Laughs) No, this is Dan (the character from “October”). I still haven’t come out of my character. This is that kind of an experience which I can’t just leave behind.

Q. Dan is not heroic in the filmy sense. What made you play such a character at this stage of your career?

A. This is what I was asked when I did “Badlapur”. I hope this question keeps coming up in my career.

Q. You will continue to seek out roles that push the envelope?

A. Not just push the envelope, but ‘phado’ (tear) the envelope. I am not interested in doing unconventional roles that don’t go all the way. I don’t want to take sides as far as doing mainstream and unconventional roles are concerned.

Why should off-beat roles not be popular? When we made “October”, we knew it won’t get the audience of a “Judwaa”. It was made within the required budget. And we were not disappointed with the results.

Q. The collections have increased manifold.

A. Yes, a day after the release, the audience began to increase considerably. That was very reassuring. People have connected with the film. What we see in “October” is what everyone goes through in life.

Q. Would you be doing more such ‘tearing the envelope’ roles?

A. Yes, absolutely. But it has to be a character like the one in “October” who is completely honest even about his dishonesty. We all lie to others and to ourselves. But how often is the hero allowed to admit his weaknesses on screen?

(Screenwriter) Juhi Chaturvedi has written the character as flawed and yes, quite annoying in the way he pushes his opinion about everything on others. Dan is quite overbearing. Yet he redeems himself finally. It proves there is a sensitive human being inside him. I loved my character’s journey.

Q. I didn’t like the way the journey ended?

A. I know. A lot of people have told me it shouldn’t have ended the way it did. But this was the only way it could end. If we changed the inevitable, we would be cheating.

Q. You’ve had cent-per cent success so far. Even your awful “Dilwale” is considered a hit. Do you think “October” will not interrupt your success spell?

A. About “Dilwale”, even today you will be surprised at how many people tell me they love that film. When I decided to do “October”, I put my entire soul into it. After “Badrinath Ki Dulhania” and “Judwaa 2”, I could have done another blockbuster kind of film. But I wanted to do a character who was not so high on self-confidence.

Dan is a bit of an upstart. He isn’t your average hero at all. When I heard about the role, I insisted that Shoojit Sircar cast me, although he had a completely different cast in mind. Dan is just 21-22. Much younger than me.

Q. How old are you?

A. I am 30. So I am actually not as inexperienced in things like illness and grieving as you might think. I’ve watched both my parents lose their parents and how it affected them. And I saw how my mother did the seva (tending) of her parents when they were ill.

Somewhere, I had stored all those memories and I used it in “October”.

Q. I believe you took a massive remuneration cut in “October”?

A. I wasn’t even thinking about money when I got the chance to do “October”. I just wanted to be part of this film.

Q. What is your biggest takeaway from this film?

A. It has definitely taught me to be more considerate towards others. It is not just important to feel for someone. It is also important to express that feeling. This film has also taught me to be sensitive about what goes on around me.

People die, people have accidents, but Life goes on. Nobody cares beyond a point. That’s really sad. Most importantly, now after doing “October”, I want to spend more time with my family.

Q. And yet you’ve moved out of your family home into your own place?

A. That’s because I needed more space. And my own private space.

Q. Did you buy your home as preparation for marriage?

A. Nothing like that. Of course it will happen in good time.

CWG performance just the start: BFI President

Congratulating the Indian contingent, which returned with an impressive haul of nine medals from the just-concluded Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Boxing Federation of India (BFI) President Ajay Singh on Tuesday warned the boxers not to get carried away with the recent accolades.

Inspired by five-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom’s maiden CWG gold in women’s 48 kilogram category, India’s Vikas Krishan (75 kg) Gaurav Solanki (52 kg) also clinched the yellow medal.

Satish Kumar (91kg), Amit Panghal (49kg) and Manish Kaushik (60kg) settled for silvers while Mohammed Husammuddin (56kg), Naman Tanwar (91kg) and Manoj Kumar (69kg) bagged bronze medals after losing their semi-final bouts.

Their feat at the CWG have indeed created a flutter among fans but Singh wants the boxers to keep their focus, keeping in mind the busy season ahead.

“This is surely a historic performance. We are extremely proud of our boxers, and congratulate the great support from the coaches and the support staff. But I would like to say, this is just the start,” Singh told IANS on the sidelines of a felicitation programme for the boxing contingent.

“Having done so well in Gold Coast, we should not take ourselves for granted. There is so much more to achieve as the ultimate objective to get Olympic medals in 2020 and 2024.

“We are trying to built a team for the future and make sure that India is a powerhouse, a leading nation in the world in boxing,” he added.

Singh further said that the CWG performance is a testimony to BFI’s hard work but cautioned the boxers that the upcoming Asian Games won’t be an easy nut to crack.

“What the CWG performance shows us is that we are in the right path. We have a much tougher competition coming up in the form of the Asian Games in August.

“We will prepare for the Asiad, starting next week with both the men and women’s teams travelling to Serbia. We also have the World Series Boxing next week where we are hosting Russia. We are also sending our teams to the Michael Johnson Academy in Texas, before the Asian Games,” he added.

Hailing the BFI’s initiatives and support for the magnificent show of Indian pugilists in Gold Coast, Mary Kom said: “It is a proud moment for me to win my first CWG medal, but this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the BFI and the sports ministry.”

“BFI is doing an incredible job in bringing top boxing events to India and the amount of exposure the young boxers are getting from these events will surely help them and India to become a boxing super power in the near future,” she added.

Shami stays back in Kolkata following police summons

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, facing charges of domestic violence and extra-marital affairs levelled by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, stayed back in the city on Tuesday following summons from the Kolkata police while his team Delhi Daredevils flew to Bengaluru for their next IPL game.

Police sources said Shami has been summoned to appear before police at 2 p.m. on Wednesday for questioning in connection with her allegations.

Delhi Daredevils are slated to take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the southern city on April 21.

“He stayed back because of the summons though the DD team has already left for Bengaluru,” said a source close to the development.

The source said Shami could join the team late on Wednesday evening after meeting police. “That I think would be the normal course.”

Shami had stepped into the city – to play the IPL game against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Monday night – for the first time since Hasin Jahan last month made series of accusations against him to the media, on Facebook and police. She had even met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with her complaints.

A source close to Shami said he was holding discussions with his lawyers to decide his next step with regard to the summons.

A case was registered in Jadavpur police station against Shami and four others on March 8 on charges of attempt to murder, rape, criminal intimidation, and causing hurt by means of poison after she accused him of multiple extramarital affairs and domestic violence.

Hasin Jahan also alleged that he was spending time with a Pakistani woman in Dubai and taking money from her.

Following the accusations that he was involved in match-fixing, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) temporarily left out Shami from the list of central contracted players, and the Bengal pacer was also probed by the anti-corruption officials of the BCCI for allegedly taking money from Pakistani contacts.

Shami was included in the contracted players’ list after the anti-corruption officials found him not guilty.

Earlier this month, Hasin Jahan moved a petition against Shami in the court of the third judicial magistrate, Alipur, praying for a monthly maintenance of Rs 10 lakh for her and their daughter.

Bihar to compete in 2018-19 Ranji season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced that its Technical Committee has unanimously approved the inclusion of Bihar in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season.

The Sourav Ganguly-led technical committee decided to adhere to the recommendation of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) and decided to reinstate Bihar in next year’s Ranji Trophy.

“However, the committee felt in the view of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India’s judgment dated July 18, 2016, the North Eastern associates and affiliate members must also be considered,” a statement read.

The recommendations of the Technical Committee will be sent to the CoA and then ratified by the BCCI general body.

If Bihar is included, the upcoming Ranji season will have 29 teams.

The Bihar Cricket Association was suspended in 2004. Bihar also suffered due to various factions claiming that their association is the recognised one.

Meanwhile, the BCCI also declared that the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season proposes to have four groups with the introduction of pre-quarterfinals. The format will remain as the Home-Away basis.

The Deodhar Trophy is proposed to have four teams, one each from the four Ranji Trophy groups.

It was also proposed that the sequence of the BCCI 2018-19 domestic season will be in the following order — Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Ranji Trophy League phase, Mushtaq Ali T20, Ranji Trophy knockouts, Deodhar Trophy.

Mumbai outplay Bangalore in IPL tie

Skipper Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 92-run innings went in vain as Royal Challengers Bangalore lost by 46 runs to Mumbai Indians in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Tuesday.
This is the first win for Mumbai in this edition of the cash-rich league.

Kohli, who opened the innings with Quinton de Kock, remained unbeaten but could not guide his team to victory. In his 62-ball innings Kohli slammed seven boundaries and four sixes.

Chasing a mammoth 214, Bangalore started off on a positive note, scoring 40 runs in 4.1 overs but after the fall of de Kock’s wicket, the visitors never looked in contention, losing wickets at regular intervals.

Apart from Kohli, no other batsmen rose to the occasion and went back one after other.

de Kock’s 19-run knock was the second highest among the other batters.

For Mumbai, left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya scalped three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell McClenaghan chipped in with two wickets each.

Earlier, skipper Rohit Sharma (94) and opener Evin Lewis (65) helped Mumbai Indians to post a mammoth 213/6.

After a disastrous start, Lewis and Rohit played a brilliant innings and forged a 108-run partnership before Lewis was dismissed. Lewis slammed six boundaries and five sixes in his 42-ball innings.

Rohit, on the other hand, stayed till the last and made sure his team crossed the 200-run mark before getting out on the penultimate delivery of the innings.

Put in to bat, Mumbai got off to a poor start, losing opener Suryakumar Yadav (0) and Ishan Kishan (0) in the opening two balls of the first over.

The fall of the wickets brought in Rohit, who along with Lewis played sensibly and slammed the bowlers all around the park before Lewis got out. Rohit slammed 10 boundaries and five sixes in his 52-ball innings.

After the fall of Lewis’ wicket in the 12th over by Corey Anderson, Krunal Pandya (15) also tried to maintain the same pace but failed and got run out in the 16th over.

Kieron Pollard then joined Rohit in the middle and let the in-form Rohit have most of the strike. Taking full advantage, the skipper paced up the innings through some beautifully crafted shots. In the process Pollard was dismissed by pacer Chris Woakes. Soon, Rohit also got out on the penultimate ball of the innings.

Hardik Pandya (17 not out) and Mitchell McClenaghan (0) then completed the proceedings.

For Bangalore, Umesh Yadav and Anderson scalped two wickets each

Improve bank’s ability to go after debtors: IMF to India

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged India to strengthen the ability of banks to go after debtors and warned that debts negatively impact investments.

“The corporate debt overhang and associated banking sector credit quality concerns exert a drag on investment in India,” the IMF’s World Economic Outlook report released on Tuesday said.

While the 2017 recapitalisation plan for major public sector banks “will help replenish capital buffers and improve the banking sector’s ability to support growth”, it “should be part of a broader package of financial reforms to improve the governance of public sector banks, and banks’ debt recovery mechanisms should be further enhanced,” the report said.

Underlining the seriousness of the bad loans or non-performing assets problem, the Reserve Bank of India said in a December 2017 report that such loans were 10.2 per cent of all the banking assets till September 2017 and was projected to grow to 10.8 per cent by March and 11.1 per cent by September 2018.

Bad loans issue has come to the fore in India in recent months with the disclosure of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi’s alleged $2 billion-scam involving the Punjab National Bank.

Another cautionary note in the IMF report said: “India’s high public debt and recent failure to achieve the budget’s deficit target call for continued fiscal consolidation into the medium term to further strengthen fiscal policy credibility.”

Overall, “the medium-term growth outlook for India is strong,” the report said.

“Growth is expected to gradually rise with continued implementation of structural reforms that raise productivity and incentivise private investment,” it added.

The IMF reiterated that India was on its way to achieve growth rates of 7.4 per cent for 2018 and 7.8 per cent for 2019 – the highest globally for major economies.

The report pointed out that it “has made progress on structural reforms in the recent past, including through the implementation of the goods and services tax, which will help reduce internal barriers to trade, increase efficiency, and improve tax compliance.”

But it stressed that India’s important challenge is to enhance inclusiveness for which further reforms are needed.

“The main priorities for lifting constraints on job creation and ensuring that the demographic dividend is not wasted are to ease labour market rigidities, reduce infrastructure bottlenecks, and improve educational outcomes,” it said.
