Prime accused in ex-radio jockey murder arrested

The prime accused in the murder of a former radio jockey was arrested on Tuesday at the Trivandrum International Airport here, police said

Alibhai, a resident in Alappuzha district, was arrested upon his arrival from Qatar earlier in the day.

On March 27, the victim Rajesh was in his studio after performing at a local show near his village when a group of men burst in and hacked him to death.

A few days after the murder, Alibhai flew to Qatar.

The police had issued a notice to the Qatar Police who first arrested Alibhai deported him back to Kerala.

The total number of arrests in are four people including Alibhai and the police were now closing down on the remaining two.

BJP MLA’s brother arrested over death of rape victim’s father

An Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA’s brother was arrested on Tuesday over charges of beating a gang rape victim’s father to death in police custody, an official said.

A special team of the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Atul Singh, the brother of Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Kuldeep Singh Senger from Unnao who has has been accused by the teenaged girl of gang rape and threats to her family.

The arrest was made in Kanpur based on the orders of the Director General of Police (DGP) O.P. Singh, the official ADDED.

The deceased Pappu Singh was being forced to withdraw the case against the MLA. Upon refusing, he was picked up by the police late Sunday night and was allegedly roughed up by Atul Singh and his aides in custody.

Pappu Singh was rushed to the district hospital with 18 wounds and gashes, abdominal pain and vomiting. He died soon thereafter.

The incident triggered a political storm and public outrage in the state, forcing the police to suspended six officials, including a station house officer (SHO) and five constables.

A magisterial probe has also been ordered by the district administration.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also asked Additional Director General of Police (Lucknow) Rajeev Krishna to investigate the matter and has promised stern action against all perpetrators.

He also on Monday that no one, however mighty they may be, will be spared in this case.

Cong aspirant paid Rs 2 crore to ‘fix’ BJP Chickpet ticket, claims viral message

Soon after BJP MLA N R Ramesh was denied the BJP ticket from Chickpet, his supporters protested against their own leader R Ashok. N R Ramesh too openly expressed his displeasure over candidate selection in the first list. Now, there are messages doing the rounds on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp that a ‘deal’ was struck between the Congress and BJP leaders in this regard.

N R Ramesh was expecting a ticket from Chickpet constituency but the party chose businessman Uday Garudachar over him.

In the viral message, it is alleged that R V Devaraj who is a Congress ticket aspirant from the same constituency ‘decided’ his opponent in the Assembly polls and allegedly paid Rs 2 crore to the BJP so as to score an easy victory.
The message further claims that the Congress leader struck a deal by offering Rs 2 crore to union minister Ananth Kumar.

Soon after the message went viral on social media, BJP president B S Yeddyurappa refuted the allegations and said that N R Ramesh does not speak such falsehoods. “I will speak to him and resolve the issue. There is no discontent in the party,” he said.

Upset over missing the ticket from the party, N R Ramesh had resigned as the city spokesperson on Monday April 9 and alleged that Chickpet was offered to Uday at the behest of union minister Ananth Kumar.

He publicly made a statement that Ananth Kumar did not respect a genuine party worker like him in the BJP.

China : India-China boundary issue should not be ‘hyped up’

The India-China boundary issue should not be “hyped up” and the two sides must abide by the agreements to maintain the peace and tranquillity along the border areas, the Chinese Foreign Ministry asserted on Monday. The ministry skirted a direct response to a report that China has lodged a strong protest with New Delhi, alleging “transgression” by the Indian troops in the strategically sensitive Asaphila area along Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian side has dismissed Beijing’s complaint.

“As for the situation on the India-China border, I am not aware of the detailed information,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing when asked about the report. Pending the resolution of the issue, we hope the two sides can abide by the agreements and instead of hyping up the relevant issue”, Geng said, adding that peace and tranquillity should be upheld in the border areas.

He, however, reiterated China’s repeated stand that Beijing never recognised Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims as part of southern Tibet. “China’s position on the India-China border is consistent and clear-cut. The Chinese government never recognised the so-called Arunachal Pradesh,” Geng said.

“China and India are engaged in consultation and negotiation to resolve border issues and pursue a fair and just solution that can be accepted by both sides,” he said. Both the countries have Special Representative talks mechanism to resolve the boundary issue. The two countries so far have held 20 rounds of talks to resolve the boundary dispute and worked out different mechanisms to keep peace along the 3,488 km long Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Asked about the recent visit of Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou to New Delhi on April 6 and reports of several Indian top ministers visiting China this month, Geng said, “China and India have a sound momentum of exchanges and close cooperation. It is not strange to have such kind of cooperation.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to due to visit China in June to take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, (SCO) summit to be held in the Chinese city of Qingdao.

Heena wins gold in women’s 25m Pistol : CWG

Indian shooter Heena Sidhu won gold in the women’s 25 metre Pistol event at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) here on Tuesday.

Heena notched up a new CWG record of 38 points in the final to take the title in style.

Elena Galiabovitch of Australia scroed 35 to take silver while Malaysia’s Alia Sazana Azahari got bronze with 26.

This was the 11th gold medal for India in this year’s CWG and Heena’s first individual gold in three editions of this quadrennial event.

Heena, who has a total of four CWG medals to her name, had bagged bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday.

She had also won a gold in the women’s 10m air pistol pairs and silver in the individual event at the 2010 edition in New Delhi.

The fact that Heena managed to emerge champion on Tuesday despite an injury in her trigger finger, speaks volumes of her determination and makes the victory all the more creditable.

Annu Raj Singh, the other Indian in the fray, fizzled out in the final after an excellent performance during qualification, to take the overall sixth place.

Elena was the fastest off the blocks in the final and Heena was trailing behind the Australian till the fifth series.

Heena did well to close the gap by scoring with all her five shots in the fifth series before another perfect score in the sixth saw her take the joint lead.

The Indian took sole lead after the first shot in the seventh series and subsequently increased the gap.

With a two-point lead at the end of the seventh series, Heena found the target in four of the five shots in the eighth to be ahead by three points.

Although the Australian managed to close the gap by one point in the ninth series, Heena held her nerves in the 10th and final series to emerge champion.

Earlier, Annu finished the qualification stage at the second spot with a total of 584 points. Heena was third with 579.

Xiu Hong Teh of Singapore topped the qualification standings with 584.

Annu had taken pole position at the end of the Precision round with 293. She managed 291 in the Rapid round while Xiu scored 293.

Annu registered a series of 96, 99 and 98 in the Precision round. She was consistent in the Rapid round as well with scores of 98, 96 and 97.

Xiu, who was second after the Precision round with 291, registered 96, 100 and 97 in the Rapid stage to snatch the lead.

Heena meanwhile, started slowly before climbing up the standings with an awesome show in the Rapid round.

She was decidedly below par in the Precision round and was lagging at the seventh spot with 286.

Heena struggled with her opening couple of shots in the Precision round with disappointing efforts of 95 and 93 before recovering somewhat with a 98 in her third and last attempt.

Heena started the Rapid round poorly as well as she could only manage a 95in her opening attempt. But she saved her best for her last two shots, firing consecutive scores of 99 to zoom to the third spot.

Sakina finishes 5th in lightweight para powerlifting : CWG 2018

India’s Sakina Khatun finished a disappointing fifth out of seven competitors in women’e lightweight para powerlifting at the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday.

Sakina, the bronze medallist in Glasgow in 2014, finished with 93.2 points to finish fifth of seven competitors in the event.

Sakina successfully lifted 82 kilograms in her first attempt before her second attempt of lifting 85 kg was ruled out.

While she was able to lift the weight, the jury deemed that she wasn’t able to hold it close enough to her chest for long enough.

Sakina also failed in her third attempt of 86 kg to eventually end up fifth.

Russia, Syria invite probe into alleged chemical attack

Russia and Syria have invited a probe into the alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma after US President Donald Trump threatened that there would be a “big price to pay”.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia denied that chemical weapons had been used in Douma and said Syrian authorities and Russian troops would provide facilities for experts from the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to visit the attack area.

According to the reports, the chemical attack on Saturday killed at least 49 people and injured 500 others, Thomas Markram, the deputy to the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, told the Council.

During a bitter clash at the Council, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said that the hands of the Russian “regime” were “covered in the blood of Syrian children” and warned that Washington would respond to the attacks even if the Council would not.

On Monday night, Trump met defence officials along with his newly appointed National Security Adviser John Bolton after warning that that there would he would decide within 48 hours on a military response to the “barbaric” act.

“If it’s Russia, if it’s Syria, if it’s Iran, if it’s all of them together, we’ll figure it out and we’ll know the answers quite soon,” he told reporters earlier on Monday.

Haley said those responsible for the attacks were “monsters”, adding: “We must not overlook Russia and Iran’s roles in enabling the Assad regime’s murderous destruction.”

With tensions between Russia and the West rising to Cold War levels, Nebenzia told the West: “We are not begging to be friends with you.”

He objected to Haley referring to his government as a “regime” and warned that he would raise a point of order the next time she did that – a move that could disrupt Council meetings, a frequent happening during the height of the Cold War.

He said the “hawkish rhetoric” in the Council and threats to use force had gone beyond what had prevailed during the Cold War.

Britain’s Permanent Representative Karen Pierce said the situation today was worse than that during the Cold War because then there was no such flagrant disregard of the universal prohibition against chemical weapons.

Nebenzia alleged that the anti-government forces had chemical weapons and could stage an attack.

But France’s Permanent Representative Francois Delattre countered that only the Syrian government and its allies had the capability to developing the chemical and said that there was no doubt about who carried out the attacks.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters: “While the UN is not in a position to verify these reports, the Secretary-General notes that any use of chemical weapons, if confirmed, is abhorrent, and requires a thorough investigation.”

Guterres’s Speical Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, told the Council via a video link from Geneva that the terrorist group Jaish al-Islam that was in control of Douma had asked for UN intervention, but the Syrian government did not respond to it.

Security for Chennai IPL match on top gear

The city police has laid down multi-layered security to prevent any untoward incident during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) here on Tuesday evening.

According to officials around 4,000 police personnel have been deployed for security.

Several fringe elements have threatened to agitate against the IPL match in protest against the central government not constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) as mandated by the Supreme Court.

Protests are being planned near the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. The situation around the stadium now is calm.

A group in the Tamil movie industry, led by Director Bharathirajaa, R.K. Selvamani and V. Sekar, floated an association called Tamil Panpaattu Peravai on Monday here.

They told reporters that holding an IPL match when the state was fighting for Cauvery river water was an attempt to divide the youth.

Bharathirajaa said they will hold a protest against the match. Some political parties too have called for axing the match.

Earlier, DMK leader M.K. Stalin said the organisers of the IPL matches should understand the people’s problems. But he said the DMK was not against holding the IPL matches.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan had also sought a ban on IPL matches in Tamil Nadu.

Spectators have also been told not to dishonour the Indian flag. No food or drink from outside will be permitted.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has banned spectators from bringing mobile phones, remote control car keys or any electronic devices, bags, briefcases, pagers, radios, digital diaries, laptops, computers, tape-recorders and even binoculars.

The banned list also includes musical instruments, video cameras, digital cameras, crackers, inflammable materials, firearms and ammunition, edibles, thermos flasks, water jugs, bottles, cigarettes, beedis, match boxes, lighters, razors, scissors, mirrors and glass, knives and batteries.

The use of mobile phones, transistors, computers, cameras or any other audio visual recording equipment for recording and for communication the match details, statistics and images has also been prohibited.

Delhi: 5 dead in two fires

Five people, including two minors, died in separate fire incidents in Delhi today, taking the toll in such cases to eight over the past 72 hours in the national capital.

The Delhi Fire Services received a call around 6.30 am about the first blaze in Rajapuri area of Sultanpuri. Over two-dozen workers were sleeping in the first and second floors of the three-storey building when the blaze started. All, but four, escaped, an officer said.

At least 10 fire tenders rushed to the spot, but the narrow alleys posed a great challenge before they could reach the site, the officer said.

The fire fighters struggled for a couple of hours to douse the fire. It was running without permission in the residential area, a senior police officer said. Police took the injured ones to a hospital where they were declared dead.

The deceased have been identified as Razi Mohammad (20), Shan Mohammad(17), Ayub (17) and Mehboob (18). They all belonged to Asmada village in Uttar Pradesh Hardoi district. Ayub and Mehboob were siblings, the police official said.

The unit was run by a person named Veeresh Gupta, who lived in the same locality. The building was used for manufacturing shoes and housed around 25-30 workers, he said. A case has been registered and investigation has been launched, he added.

The second incident was reported around 12.55 pm at Kamal Building in Kucha Mahajani of Old’s Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area, the police said. The fire in the building, housing several jewellery shops, spread to all three floors. Twenty-two fire tenders were rushed to contain the blaze, a police official said.

The youth, who was rescued from the spot, was declared dead at a hospital. Preliminary investigation suggest that Rohit, a resident of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, died due to suffocation, the official added.

Earlier, two persons had died in a fire at a footwear-manufacturing unit in Narela on Saturday, while a 62-year-old shopkeeper died in a pre-dawn blaze at his shop in Sarita Vihar area yesterday

Partial shut-down in Kerala, sporadic violence reported

The 12-hour hartal called by various Dalit outfits in Kerala to protest the “dilution” of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act today, witnessed sporadic incidents of stone pelting and roads blocks by pro-hartal activists.

Protestors forcefully closed shops and resorted to road blocks in many parts of the state. Incidents of stone throwing at Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were reported from different places including Kollam and Alappuzha.

In Thrissur, the driver of a KSRTC bus was injured in stone pelting, police said. The strike call evoked partial response as some shops and business establishments remained open while state and central government offices functioned as usual.

Private buses operated services in some parts of the state. Few autorickshaws and taxis were seen plying on the roads. The Kerala University postponed the exams scheduled for the day, in view of the state-wide hartal.

Earlier in the day, at least 20 Dalit activists including Gothara Maha Sabha leader M Geethanandan were arrested for attempting to block traffic at the High Court junction in Kochi.

Geethanandan, who is also the Convener of Kerala’s Dalit Action Council, and some its activists were arrested, police said.

Condemning his preventive arrest, Geethanandan said it was a “prejudiced action” on the part of the police to silence the Dalits.

Around 30 Dalit organisations are observing the hartal to protest the alleged dilution of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court.

They also condemned the police action against the Dalit agitators during the ‘Bharat bandh’ observed in various northern states on April 2.

They claimed that Supreme Court had on March 20 “diluted” the provisions of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, ruling that government servants should not be arrested without prior sanction and private citizens, too, be arrested only after an inquiry under the law.

In the state capital, a group of Dalit activists took out a march to the Secretariat and staged a dharna. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Ramesh Chennithala said the Congress-led UDF Opposition has extended support to the hartal.

Senior Congress leader A K Antony criticised the arrest of Dalit leaders in connection with the agitation and said Congress would not support any move to “dilute” the rights of SC and ST communities.
