Nitish Kumar-led government is anti-Dalit: Manjhi

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Thursday said the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the state was anti-Dalit as most of the people arrested under prohibition laws were from the community.

“Nitish Kumar ki sarkar Dalit virodhi hai, sharab bandi ke kanoon ke naam pe sabse jayada Dalit aaur garib logon ko hi giraftar kiya gaya hai (Nitish Kumar’s government is anti-Dalit. In the name of justifying the liqour ban, majority of those arrested are Dalits and the poor),” Manjhi said at a public meeting in Punpun, about 20 km from here.

Manjhi said Dalits and the poor were being harassed and humiliated in the name of implementing prohibition laws.

Earlier, Manjhi said the government’s prohibition policy had become a tool to persecute Dalits in the state

Last December, Manjhi said Nitish Kumar’s much-hyped prohibition policy in Bihar was a failure.

According to police records, over one lakh people have been arrested for violating the liquor ban imposed by the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on April 5, 2016.

Trump orders National Guard troops to US-Mexico border.

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

US President Donald Trump has officially signed a memorandum to deploy the National Guard to the country’s border with Mexico, a move that followed days of him calling for a larger crackdown on illegal immigration.

In the memo signed on Wednesday evening, Trump declared that Defence Secretary James Mattis “shall request use of National Guard personnel” to secure the border and that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will work with him to train and direct the troops in that mission.

Key details like the numbers of troops, how long they will be deployed, how much it will cost and where they will go are still being finalised, CNN reported.

“Despite a number of steps this administration has taken… we continue to see unacceptable levels of illegal drugs, dangerous gang activity, transnational criminal organisations and illegal immigration flow across our border,” Nielsen said, adding that troops could be sent to the border “immediately”.

The move followed days of public fuming by Trump about immigration policy, during which he tweeted about immigration legislation in Congress, a caravan of migrants making its way through Mexico and what he called “weak border laws”.

He tweeted earlier on Wednesday that he would “be taking strong action” on the Mexico border, a day after he said that he wants to send the military to secure it until a wall was built.

Nielsen cited a historic uptick in border crossings in spring months like April and advertising from smuggling groups as reasons for the move, calling it in part “anticipating”.

“Why not yesterday and tomorrow? Today is the day we want to start this process,” she said. “The threat is real.”

“We will not allow illegal immigration levels to become the norm… More than 1,000 people a day, 300,000 a year violating our sovereignty as a nation will never be acceptable to this President,” she said.

The memo instructed the two secretaries and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to put together a report within 30 days on further steps the administration can take to combat what it called a “crisis” and “a drastic surge of illegal activity on the southern border”.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Senate “categorically” rejected the US move and said that deploying Army troops or the National Guard in the region would be “yet another wrong” against the Mexican community.

The letter, signed by Mexican Senate President Ernesto Cordero, called on the Mexican government to suspend bilateral cooperation in immigration matters and the fight against organised crime until “Trump behaves with civility and shows respect to Mexico”.

Mark Zuckerberg : Face book Focus On India, Others In “Big Year Of Elections”

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Facebook has deployed technology tools like artificial intelligence and thousands of people to work on security as the company’s “major focus” this year is to protect the integrity of upcoming elections in several countries, including India, on its platform, its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said.

Terming 2018 a “big year” for elections, Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook was enhancing its security features to prevent trolls from spreading information.

The social media giant has been slammed over a major data breach scandal by Cambridge Analytica, a British firm linked to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

“In the US Senate Alabama special election last year, we successfully deployed some new artificial intelligence (AI) tools that removed Macedonian trolls who were trying to spread information during the election. We now have about 15,000 people working on security and content review and we’ll have more than 20,000 by the end of this year,” Mark Zuckerberg told reporters during a conference call on Tuesday.

“This is going to be a big year for elections ahead with the US midterms and elections in India, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Hungary and others. This is going to be a major focus for us,” he said.

Several states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are scheduled to go for polls this year and the general elections are due in a little over a year from now.

A day earlier, Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook had taken big steps by taking down Russia’s Internet Research Agency (IRA) pages that were targeting the US.

“Since we became aware of their activity after the 2016 US elections, we’ve been working to root out the IRA and protect the integrity of elections around the world,” he said.

“There have been a number of important elections that we’ve focused on. A few months after the 2016 elections, there was a French presidential election and leading up to that we deployed some new AI tools that took down more than 30,000 fake accounts,” he said.

In German election, the company developed a new playbook for working with the local election commission on share information on threats it received, he said.

“We have more work to do here and we’re going to continue working very hard to defend against them. There’s the Mexican presidential election, there are big elections in India and Brazil as well as in Pakistan and Hungary and a number of other countries and the US midterms, of course,” he said.

The Facebook CEO pointed out three different types of activity that required different strategies for fighting.

Economic actors, who are basically spammers; the second are governments trying to interfere in elections, and then the third is just polarisation and sometimes lack of truthfulness in what you’ve described as the media, he said.

“If we just make it so that the economics stop working for them then they’ll move on to something else. I mean, these are literally the same type of people who had been sending you Viagra e-mails in the ’90s. We can attack it on both sides. on the revenue side, we make it so that they can’t run the Facebook ad network,” he said.

The second category are the national security type issues, Mark Zuckerberg said, adding that is the Russian election interference.

“In order to solve that, what we need to do is to identify these bad actors…What we need to do is to just track that really carefully in order to just be able to remove it from Facebook entirely,” he said.

COMMENTSMark Zuckerberg alleged that some media organisations that are sanctioned news outlets in Russia when investigated closely over time, clearly come out as organisations completely owned, controlled and operated by the IRA.

“So we take them down and treat that as a security issue,” he said.

DMK, other oppn parties call for TN shutdown today : Cauvery Issue

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and other Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu are observing a state-wide bandh today. The Opposition parties have called the bandh to protest against Centre’s failure in setting up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

On February 16, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had directed the Centre to form the CMB within six weeks in a verdict that marginally increased Karnataka’s share of Cauvery water, thus reducing allocation for Tamil Nadu and settling the protracted water dispute between the two southern states.

DMK working president MK Stalin will be attending the bandh at Anna Salai in Chennai.

Tamil Nadu state buses are not operating in neighbouring Karnataka and were stopped at the border.

The DMK has called for a meeting of Opposition parties on the Cauvery issue today evening. The AIADMK has not been extended an invite yet.

Yesterday, the AIADMK members staged a hunger strike to demand the formation of the Cauvery Management Board.

The DMK and other Opposition parties had been protesting on the issue from April 2 in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
