New KPCC chief will be appointed soon says Dr. Parameshwar

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said the state cabinet would be expended as soon as possible.
“The coalition coordination and monitoring committee have decided to expand the ministry and appoint chairpersons or presidents at 30 boards and corporations of the government as soon as possible,” he told reporters at Dharmasthala, a pilgrimage center in Dakshin Kannada district.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara Parameshwara said there is a need to expedite implementation of these two decisions to carry out work in the light of good monsoon the state has experienced so far.
“These decisions (cabinet expansion and appointment of chairpersons of boards and corporations ) should be implemented soon. Isn’t it? There has been good rain here (Dakshin Kannada) and in our region too (Bengaluru) by God’s grace. Even the weathermen are predicting good monsoon, and hence we may not face drought this year,” he said. On the issue of KPCC President, Parameshwara said the party High Command would announce the name of a suitable candidate at the suitable time.
Asked about his meeting with former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Dharamshala, Parameshwara said it was just a coincidence and no political significance should be attached to it. “Since Siddaramaiah is our leader and it is our duty to meet him,” he said. Siddaramaiah is undergoing naturopathy treatment in Dharmasthala. However, Parameshwara said he had discussed various political issues including budget and appointment of heads for corporations and boards yesterday.

An equal-opportunity school sets a sterling example in social integration

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Much before the Indian parliament promulgated the Right to Education Act (RTE) in 2009 that guaranteed education to all a committed local teacher had already pioneered the idea of making school access a reality for hundreds of underprivileged children, irrespective of their social status or economic background.

Meet Lakshmi Kaul, the unassuming woman, originally Lakshmi Krishnamurthy from Kerala, who is not only responsible for imparting good education to hundreds of children of housemaids, drivers, office boys and other low-income families but also ensuring that there is no discrimination against them at school.

In the heart of the city, in Indiranagar neighbourhood, Kaul runs a school named K K Academy where children of professionals like chartered accountants, doctors, lawyers and the rich mingle with the poorest. Kaul found this school in 1989 as a place where her daughter could take the formative steps in primary education.

“Schools at that time too were very expensive and out of reach for the poor sections. So it struck me and my husband (Arvind Kaul) one day that why shouldn’t we start a school of our own,” Kaul told IANS while reminiscing how that seed of an idea has now grown into a full grown tree.

An IIM-Bangalore graduate of early 1980s who worked in Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore, Kaul narrates how she decided to take a break from the “maddening corporate world” and do “something more meaningful and fruitful”.

The school started with a skeletal staff and five children in a garage of their house. Soon, students were coming in droves, largely owing to its affordability and accessibility and the couple purchased a house a few hundred metres away from their own.

“As management professionals, we realized that while goals were good but they had their own pressures…something that our sorted out minds were not ready to be ambushed with,” she says with a chuckle while recalling how she and her husband decided to go full throttle, purging their own domestic expenses and giving “our best shot to the school”.

The school has grown manifold since then and has a 3,250-plus strength now and has classes from first to seventh standard.

“Our core belief is that quality education should be accessible to children from all backgrounds, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, special needs or economic background” Kaul says while adding how the school has very often had instances of the saheb’s (master’s) child studying in the same class as her family’s driver.

“These have been true case studies of seamless integration. We have not had any complaints from parents or children; those who don’t ascribe to this concept of equal opportunity probably choose to send their children to more cosmetically fancy schools,” a teacher adds.

“I have never seen children making comparisons based on family background. As a matter of fact, I have seen them being extremely supportive and mindful. A large part of the credit for this goes to the teachers, who do not differentiate and do not tolerate any kind of bias. Children very much follow this lead,” the founder says.

In the year 2011, the school instituted an annual award for the graduating class, in the memory of a dear professor from IIM, Dr G.K.Valecha. The selection was based on academic progress, leadership qualities, innate desire for learning and interaction with students and teachers. It has been five years now. The recipients of this award in four years have been children whose education the school is supporting.

Many of its former students of this school are now working for multinational companies and are successful in their own spheres, she informs.

“A large number of them have gone on to study science, and then engineering. Also commerce and law. They have gone on to become lawyers, chartered accountants, teachers, engineers, bankers, IT professionals and even a published author. They are supporting their families and are role models to many others in their communities,” she said.

In this year’s Class X CBSE Board, Hritik Verma, the school maid’s grandson scored 93 per cent marks and Harsh Kanaujiya, a driver’s son, scored 91 per cent.

“Both studied till Class VIII in our school.”

In the ICSC Board exam, Kabir Ali, whose father is a tailor, scored 92 per cent, she adds.

Through generous help off and on from her IIM batchmates who are now at powerful positions in the corporate world, the school has managed to operate with a modest fee and no re-admission fee.

Lakshmi happily informs that the school now has a computer lab, many tablet computers for the children and a library that has a decent collection.

An alumni, who long ago studied at the school and is now working for an IT-major recently visited the school along with his girlfriend.

“I was touched when the boy told me that he wanted his would-be-wife to first meet me and then his parents,” says a nostalgic and emotional Kaul.

Phoolmati, the aging ‘aayaa’ (maid) working at the school, had three of her grandchildren study here and they are now up with good schools for their higher education.

Chirpy as a child she informs, between motherly requests to allow her to make some coffee, that the school changed their lives forever.

Gulab Devi, mother of the first RTE student at the school, shares the sentiment and says how her son Durgesh would not even speak and now after two years in school he does not stop talking.

“Ab to bahut accha hai, pehle to bolta hi nahin tha, ab to din bhar padhta hai aur bak-bak karta hai (Now he is very good. He didn’t talk much earlier but now he studies the whole day and keeps talking about it),” she says breaking into a big smile.

Shreya Verma, daughter of a pharmacist, too says that her life has had so much of a value addition that words fall short.

Aavya, daughter of a woman police inspector posted in Hathras, is asked to sing a song. “She is our singing leader” informs a teacher who has been working at the school since its inception.

“Ekla chalo, ekla chalo re…” the girl belts out a soulful rendition of Rabindranath Tagore’s famous song. Its lyrics beautifully explain how one should not be afraid of venturing alone if no one else heeds your call. Lakshmi Kaul just did that and never felt the need to look back.

Sitharaman visits J&K to review Amarnath Yatra security

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Baltal base camp in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday to review security arrangements made for the annual Amarnath Yatra.

Officials in the Defence Ministry said Sitharaman, accompanied by senior commanders of the Army, was briefed on the three-tier security arrangements made for the Yatra that begins on June 28.

As many as 213 additional companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed to secure the nearly 400 km-long Yatra route from winter capital Jammu to the two base camps of Baltal and south Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

The 36 km-long trek from Pahalgam has halting points at Chandanwari, Sheshnag, Panchtarni and finally the Cave shrine situated at an altitude of 12,756 feet above the sea level.

Pilgrims using the Pahalgam route take four days to reach the shrine.

Those using the Baltal route reach back to the base camp the same day after praying inside the shrine cave which involves only 14 km-long one-way uphill trek.

Helicopter services are also available for the pilgrims on both the routes.

The cave houses an ice stalagmite structure believed to symbolize the mythical powers of Lord Shiva. The structure waxes and wanes corresponding to the visible moon.

Five killed as rains clobber Maharashtra, road, rail traffic hit

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Torrential rains clobbered large areas of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra seriously hitting road traffic and rail operations, claiming at least five lives in rain-related incidents, officials said here on Monday.

Mumbai’s lifeline, the suburban locals on Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) were running between 15-30 minutes late on account of waterlogging on the railway tracks and a periphery of several stations like Sion, Chinchpokli, and Matunga, inconveniencing office-goers due to overnight rains that lashed the city.

On the WR, the downpour had dislocated train movement due to heavy rains in south Gujarat and north-west Maharashtra, but services were restored (after nearly 90 minutes) with severe speed restrictions by 9.10 a.m. on Monday.

WR General Manager A.K. Gupta left for the affected track sites between Bhilad-Sanjana (south Gujarat), even as several mail and express trains bound for Mumbai and from Mumbai to various destinations like Gujarat and Delhi, were delayed at various points en route.

The Mumbai morning peak road traffic was badly hit as waterlogging was reported in some parts of the Eastern and Western Express Highways (EEH-WEH), main and arterial roads and many low-lying areas of the city and suburbs and traffic to and from adjoining Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts.

There was flooding in several areas like Chunabhatti, Wadala, Dadar, Malad, Kurla, Gamdevi, Santacruc-Chembur Link Road and other places hitting traffic movement severely and delaying school buses transporting kids to their schools.

A portion of the wall of an under-construction highrise at Lords Estate in Antop Hill trapping many residents and damaging over a dozen private cars parked in a neighbouring society premises.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, NDRF and other emergency services have launched relief operations but there are no reports of any casualties.

World Cup: Colombia thrash insipid Poland

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Colombia thrashed Poland 3-0 in a Group H encounter of the FIFA World Cup here on Sunday.

Yerry Mina (40th minute), Radamel Falcao (70th) and Juan Cuadrado (75th) scored for Columbia.

The win kept alive Columbia’s chances of advancing from the group stage.

They are on three points from two matches. They had been defeated 1-2 by Japan in their first game.

Poland, who had been defeated by Senegal in their previous match, have no points and are as good as out of the tournament.

Colombia dominated proceedings right from the start.

The South Americans controlled possession beautifully and Poland struggled to contain their star-studded attacking line-up.

Cuadrado was impressive form, keeping the capacity crowd awestruck with his runs down the right wing.

He formed a superb combination with Juan Quintero and the duo created all sorts of problems for the Poland defense.

Apart from his good work upfront, Cuadrado also did some really good defensive work, falling back with speed whenever Poland went on the counter.

Poland never really seemed to be in the game and created very little scoring chances.

They have one of the best centre-forwards in the world in Robert Lewandowski but Poland’s link up play from the midfield was rendered ineffective by Columbia’s excellent defensive organization.

The Bayern Munich star was left totally isolated in the absence of proper support from the midfield.

Whenever Poland went on the attack, Colombia’s speed down the flanks saw the Europeans being caught on the counter.

Colombia took the lead shortly before halftime off a corner when James Rodr Aguez floated in a cross into the penalty box and Mina rose above the Poland defence to head the ball in.

The South Americans continued to dominate after the break and created scoring chances at regular intervals.

But a combination of poor finishing and excellent defending by Poland prevented them from scoring.

But Colombia could not be denied for long as Falcao, who seemed to be struggling with his form, finally found his scoring touch.

A quick attack by Colombia saw Quintero put forward an excellent through and Falcao raced into the opposition box and calmly slotted home into the bottom-left corner.

Poland were forced to go all out in attack which saw Cuadrado score Colombia’s third goal off a fast counter a short while later.

James initiated the move charging out of defence down the left wing before finding Cuadrado upfront.

Cuadrado, who had raced down the right wing before receiving the ball in the centre, continued his run and beat Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with an excellent finish.

That virtually sealed the issue as Poland never seemed capable of scoring and Colombia clinched a well deserved victory.

World Cup: Uruguay, Russia eye top spot in Group A

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Uruguay and Russia will battle for the top spot in Group A and enter the knockout rounds of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in style when they meet here on Monday.

Both teams have won their previous two matches but Uruguay needs a win in order to finish the opening round as group winners while a draw will be enough for Russia since they enjoy a superior goal difference.

The most highly rated team in the group with several stars in their line-up, Uruguay have not been at their best during identical 1-0 wins over Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

However, the South Americans boast one of the strongest attacking line-ups in the tournament which includes the likes of star forward Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, and Maxi Gómez.

Their defense, marshaled by skipper Diego Godín, are yet to concede a goal and the Uruguayans will definitely like to keep it that way. Godín is playing in his third World Cup and his experience should come in handy as the business end of the tournament approaches.

José Giménez is Godin’s partner in the center of the Uruguay defense and the Atlético Madrid star has made a good impression so far in his maiden World Cup.

Russia in contrast, have been more spectacular. They thrashed the Saudis 5-0 in the tournament’s inaugural match before outclassing Egypt 3-1.

Left winger Denis Cheryshev has played a starring role for Russia with three goals as the hosts entered the second round for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union.

The 27-year-old will aim to maintain his superb form as the Russians face their toughest test of the group stage.

The Russian defence however, did not face too many problems in the first two matches but the likes of Suarez and Cavani should be a different matter altogether.

India beat Argentina in Champions Trophy clash

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

India defeated Argentina 2-1 to register their second consecutive victory in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Sunday.

Harmanpreet Singh gave India the lead off a penalty corner in the 17th minute before Mandeep Singh (28th minute) doubled the advantage with a field goal.

Gonzalo Peillat powered home a penalty in the 30th minute to reduce the margin for Argentina.

Coming into their second round robin match after comfortable wins on an opening day, both teams played out an exciting first quarter.

Argentina stretched the Indian defence early on as they made potential frays into the striking circle. A stick check by Jarmanpreet Singh while tackling Matias Paredes in the striking circle saw India concede a penalty corner.

However, excellent defending kept Argentina’s ace dragflicker Gonzalo Peillat from scoring, ending the first quarter in a stalemate.

Two minutes into the second quarter, India drew first blood when a deliberate foul by Maico Casella while tackling Harmanpreet fetched India their first penalty corner of the match.

A perfect injection by Sardar Singh was further improvised by Harmanpreet who kept it low as he used a powerful flick to sound the board.

The lead gave India the momentum to put pressure on the Olympic champions. India stretched the lead when a brilliant overhead pass was perfectly picked up by young Dilpreet Singh who cautiously maneuvered to play it across to Mandeep Singh who made no mistake in deflecting it past the Argentine goalkeeper.

The Olympic champions bounced back immediately with a strong attack, as they forced an error to win a penalty corner in the 30th minute. Peillat was absolutely impressive when he found the top corner of the net to beat Indian goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh.

With Argentina narrowing the deficit, India treaded cautiously, maintaining their structure while their defence ensured that they left no space for the Argentine forwards to create opportunities.

The fourth quarter was tense with India looking to pull off something similar to the match against Pakistan where they scored three goals in the final 15 minutes.

India however kept the ball tight and looked for an opening. With five minutes left, India were reduced to 10 players with Birendra Lakra getting a yellow card. It was an absolutely tense final few minutes as India held on to the lead.

Venugopal to be replaced as Congress Karnataka in-charge

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

There are indications that national leadership of Congress party which is unhappy at the failure of in-charge of Congress party affairs in Karnataka, K C Venugopal, to regulate Congress MLAs during the formation of the coalition government in Karnataka, is thinking of replacing him.

Congress after failing to muster a majority in the state, had entered into an alliance with JD(S) to form a government here. KC Venugopal, who is the Karnataka in-charge of Congress affairs, failed to exercise control over the party legislators, the party leadership feels, going by the fact that protests were held in favor of certain MLAs, the pressure was mounted, and threats were posted. Therefore, national president of the party, Rahul Gandhi, is contemplating to post another leader in his place, highly placed sources in the party said.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad would replace Venugopal, as party leaders in the state strongly feel that Azad would be the best choice to tackle JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and the other politicians in his family.

Besides, given the fact that Azad along with senior leader Ashok Gehlot and Venugopal played a major role in the formation of Congress-JD(S) post-poll alliance, his nomination as in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka would make all the more sense, Congress sources said, adding that though Venugopal was part of the team, it was Azad and Gehlot who worked overtime to ensure that the Congress-JD(S) alliance formed the government.

According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, a senior leader in the party has said that Venugopal was not being removed for any lapses but only because the party needs a senior leader when the party has a coalition partner like the veteran Deve Gowda. “Deve Gowda is not a simple leader who can be tackled easily by anyone. The party needs a strong senior leader like Azad who knows Karnataka politics well and has a good rapport with every known Congress leader in the state,”
It is also speculated that in the days to come, Deve Gowda himself may enter the coalition scene and create a headache for the Congress. Presently, only Deve Gowda’s two sons – chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and PWD minister H D Revanna are part of the government. “The party will have to start talks with Deve Gowda over the formation of a possible pre-poll alliance in Lok Sabha polls and many other crucial issues may crop up from now on, and that is why, Azad would be a better bet,” the source said.

Congress wants to register impressive performance in the next year’s Lok Sabha election. It does not want to leave any stone unturned in its effort to come back to power at the center. Therefore, it is thinking of posting Ghulam Nabi Azad who would be able to handle legislators in Karnataka more effectively, sources added.

Amit Shah slams Assam’s social media team

June 25, 2018 by Nasheman

BJP President Amit Shah has slammed the party’s social media team in Assam for not being aggressive ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, a party leader said on Monday.

Shah, who reviewed the Lok Sabha election preparations in Assam and other northeastern states during his recent visit to the state, asked the team and other party members to be more active on social media to reach out to a maximum number of the electorate and attract young voters.

“He held a separate meeting with the social media team of the Assam unit. A total of 82 members of the team participated. Shah expressed concern over the fact that most of the party leaders in Assam were not active at all on social media except Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said.

While Sonowal has more than 7 lakh followers on Facebook and Twitter, Sarma has over 6 lakh followers on social media.

But Assam BJP President Ranjit Kumar Das has only some 40,000 followers.

“Amit Shah has asked the social media team to develop content which can be shared for better communication with people. However, he advised to be very cautious regarding the selection of content and strictly ordered to avoid sensitive issues.”

The BJP, which rules Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Manipur and is allied to ruling parties in Meghalaya and Nagaland, is targeting to win at least 21 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the eight northeastern states next year.
