Mirwaiz says youths can question Kashmiri separatists

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Tuesday defended a youth who questioned the bona fides of separatist leaders in Kashmir, saying young people like him have every right to vent their emotions.

Irfan Sheikh, a cousin of Kaiser Ahmad who was mowed down by a Central Reserve Police Force vehicle in Srinagar last week, challenged the separatist leaders who came to offer condolences to the deceased.

The video of Sheikh was widely circulated on Internet, generating debates on social media and on national television news channels.

Reacting, the Mirwaiz wrote on Twitter: “Indian media repeatedly exposes their shallowness and frustration! The youth of Kashmir like Irfan Sheikh, who are at the forefront of the freedom movement, giving immense sacrifices, have every right to question their leadership and vent their emotions.

“Actually this section of electronic media lives off spreading hate and propaganda about Kashmir. They have a deep vested interest in it. Kashmir and Hurriyat bashing has become a great TRP grosser for them!”

In the video, Sheikh is heard saying that there is duplicity in the approach of the separatist leaders.

“On the one hand you are greeting Shabir Shah’s daughter for excelling in exams as a student of a Delhi Public School and on the other hand you are asking Kashmiris not to send children to Christian missionary schools.

“Against the sayings and practices of the Prophet, who said Muslims should hasten the burial of their dead, you kept my cousin’s body on the road for three hours. Is that the teaching of the holy Prophet?” he asked.

Sheikh also said that Kaiser had left behind two sisters who have nobody in the world after their brother’s death.

Guatemala volcano eruption toll reaches 69

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The toll from the eruption of the highly active Fuego volcano in Guatemala has increased to 69 with over 1 million residents affected, according to authorities.

The volcano erupted Sunday, spewing a river of lava and plumes of smoke almost 6 miles into the air. Seventeen of the dead have been identified so far, CNN quoted Guatemala’s Institute of Forensic Sciences as saying late Monday.

Fifteen people, including 12 children, have been hospitalised, some of whom suffered severe burns, the Health Ministry said.

Volcanic ash has already stretched across a 12-mile radius, and winds could carry the cloud even farther, officials said.

President Jimmy Morales has declared three days of national mourning.

So far, over 3,100 people have been evacuated and 1.7 million people have been affected by the eruption, according to CONRED, the government agency for disaster reduction.

Satellite footage of Fuego shows the massive dark gray eruption was visible even from space.

Authorities urged residents living near the volcano to evacuate immediately, and warned some in Chimaltenango, Sacatepequez and Escuintla states to watch out for volcanic rocks and ash.

The National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology on Monday warned that there could be new eruptions, and residents in the surrounding areas should be on alert for mudslides containing volcanic material.

Fuego’s eruption is much bigger than Hawaii’s Kilauea eruption, which terrorised Big Island on May 3.

Unlike the Hawaii volcano, which has destroyed homes with slow-moving lava, the Fuego volcano unleashed fast-moving pyroclastic flow — a mix of ash, rock and volcanic gases that can be much more dangerous than lava, CNN reported.

Pyroclastic flows can race down a volcano at hundreds of kilometers per hour — much faster than people or even cars.

Guatemala is situated on the “Ring of Fire,” an area of intense seismic activity.

The 40,000-km area stretches from the boundary of the Pacific Plate and the smaller plates such as the Philippine Sea plate to the Cocos and Nazca Plates that line the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Volcan de Fuego, which means fire volcano, is one of Central America’s most active.

RajniKanth’s ‘Kaala’ Filed a Petition in the Karnataka High Court

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Kaala’ producer K Dhanush and his wife Aishwarya have filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking directions to the state government and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) for the smooth release of the film. ‘Kaala’ is scheduled to be released worldwide on June 7 but KFCC had said the film would neither be distributed nor screened in the state. In the plea, Dhanush, who is Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, submitted that it is the fundamental right of the petitioners under the Constitution exhibit the film.

“CBFC has issued a certification under Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, for the release of ‘Kaala’ after following due process and adhering to all guidelines. After receiving such a certificate, it is the fundamental right of the petitioner under Article 19(1) of the Constitution to exhibit the film,” the petitioners submitted. The petitioners also have sought security at theatres and for movie-goers, directors, producers and cast associated with ‘Kaala’ in Karnataka. They have made the government, home department, state police chief, Bengaluru city police commissioner, Central Board of Film Certification and KFCC as respondents in their plea.

The petitioners stated that KFCC took a decision to neither distribute nor screen ‘Kaala’ in Karnataka following Rajinikanth’s alleged views on the Cauvery dispute, demanding the release of water to Tamil Nadu as per Supreme Court direction. The petitioners also said KFCC President Sa Ra Govindu on May 30 had issued a press statement saying the film will neither be distributed nor screened anywhere in Karnataka.

They also said the several pro-Kannada organizations had made representations to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy requesting a ban on ‘Kaala.’ The petition is likely to come up for hearing today. Meanwhile, controversial actor Prakash Raj has questioned the ban on Kaala in Karnataka.

“What’s film #kaala got to do with Kaveri issue..? why is film fraternity targeted always..? Will Jds/congress government let fringe elements take law into their hands… like bjp did with #Padmavat.. or ..will you step in to assure common man.. his right for choice. #justasking..,” tweeted the multi-lingual actor.

In a statement, Raj said, “Who are these people to decide what most Kannadigas want or don’t want? What about the distributors, investors and theatre owners and the thousands of those whose lives depend on them? And what about the lakhs and lakhs of cinema lovers because of whom, all these people earn a living?

Only India can help itself combat pollution: UN Environment head Erik Solheim

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

United Nations Environment head Erik Solheim believes that only India can help itself when it comes to “Beat Plastic Pollution” — this year’s theme of World’s Environment Day that the country is hosting — or to rustle up the finances for this.

With the United States working on its way to quit the historic Paris Climate Agreement, Solheim says it’s just the right time for India and China — among the world’s top polluters — to lead the world in the war against climate change and pollution.

“First of all, only India can change India. Indian political leaders and its people can change India,” Solheim told IANS in an interview.

“But we can help,” he continued, adding that despite being in a desperate situation to work upon its solid waste management, the world can still learn from India and India can learn from China and vice versa.

India produces over 62 million tonnes of solid waste every year, of which only 43 million tonnes is collected, only 12 million tonnes treated and the rest dumped. According to the experts, the figure is expected to rise to 436 million tonnes by 2050.

“There is a huge issue of waste management in India and everyone can see that; we went from train to Agra from Delhi and we saw. There was plastic all over the rails, that’s a problem,” he said, highlighting the “big need” to manage that.

Speaking of plastic waste alone, approximately 900,000 tonnes of PET — used to make soft drink bottles, furniture, carpet, paneling, etc. — was produced in India in 2015-16, as reported by the National Chemical Laboratory.

About 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated evey year in India, of which only 60 per cent, according to Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan, is recycled. Delhi with 689.52 tonnes tops the chart of plastic waste followed by Chennai (429.39 tonnes), Mumbai (408.27 tonnes), Bengaluru (313.87 tonnes) and Hyderabad (199.33 tonnes).

Solheim, however, was optimistic about India and counts on the initiative taken by the country’s political leaders. According to business analysts, Indian waste management Industry has a potential of $15 billion with promising growth prospects.

“To tackle the situation, you need to see how these problems were resolved in the past. For instance, we resolved the biggest global environment problem of 1980s — the hole in the ozone layer. At that time also political leaders and businesses bought us the solutions,” he pointed out.

Appreciating China for cleaning its rivers, Solheim highlighted the scope of learning for India. “If China can do that then India can do that in Ganga and other rivers,” he added.

Pointing to the International Solar Alliance, Kochi airport, which is the world’s first solar-powered airport, and the world’s biggest solar power plant in Tamil Nadu, Solheim believed that the world can learn much from India.

“We can provide the best Indian practices to the world and can bring best practices from the world to India,” he noted.

Asked about the polluting images of India and China he lauded the two nations for working towards solutions.

“India and China, frankly speaking, are in the lead of solving their environment issues, obviously there had been challenges,” he said.

“China has been cleaning its rivers like no other nation in human history. They have reduced pollution in Beijing by 30 to 40 percent. Similarly in India, city of Hyderabad has been declared plastic-free and soon the area around the Taj Mahal will also be,” he said.

Drawing parallels between the issues of India and China — traffic and vehicular pollution — he pointed out how China had built Metro rails in 35 cities in the last 10 years and has also emerged as the biggest market for electric vehicles, adding that given the trajectory of its growth, India will catch up very fast.

French Open: Nadal earns 900th win

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

World No.1 Rafael Nadal of Spain on Monday defeated Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), earning his career’s 900th win and advancing to the French Open quarter-finals.

Nadal, who turned 32 on Sunday, needed two hours and 30 minutes to get rid of Marterer, world No. 70, setting up a quarter-final clash with Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman, reported Efe.

The 10-time French Open champion got his 224th Grand Slam win, surpassing Jimmy Connors of the US, but is still far behind record holder Roger Federer of Switzerland (332) and second-placed Novak Djokovic of Serbia (244).

He also tied Djokovic’s record for the most quarter-finals appearances at Ronald Garros, reaching that stage for the 12th time.

Nadal extended his straight-set winning streak at the French Open to 37, just four sets shy of the record set by Sweden’s Bjorn Borg.

But that streak seemed to be in danger, as Nadal conceded his service game in the early stages of the first and third sets, but managed to keep his momentum.

Debutant Marterer stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first set, but Nadal turned up the heat, winning five straight games, and went on to clinch the set.

Nadal continued to build momentum in the second set, racking up a 2-0 lead and earning one more service break at 4-2 to double his lead.

Marterer, however, broke Nadal’s serve for 3-1 in the third set, but Nadal restored order, drawing level at 3-3.

The set then went with serve, heading to a tiebreak that Nadal won through superior consistency in the key moments.

Trump’s phone call with Macron described as ‘terrible’

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

A phone call between US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron has been described as being “terrible” after the latter candidly criticised the former’s policies, a media report said.

“Just bad. It was terrible,” an informed source told CNN on Monday.

“Macron thought he would be able to speak his mind, based on the relationship. But Trump can’t handle being criticised like that.”

A White House statement said the call on May 31 with Macron was focused on trade and immigration.

“Both leaders discussed the migration problem in Libya, and timelines to solve it. President Trump underscored the need to rebalance trade with Europe,” the statement said.

The call with Macron came the same day the US announced a unilateral decision to slap steel and aluminium tariffs on American allies, including Mexico, Canada, and the European Union, CNN reported.

In a statement issued by the Elysee Palace ahead of the call, Macron said he “regrets the US decision to confirm tariffs in steel and aluminium.”

“This decision is not only illegal, it is a mistake on many points. It is a mistake because it responds to a worldwide unbalance that exists in the worst ways through fragmentations and economic nationalism,” it added.

Trump held a similar call with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday.

According to a Downing Street spokesperson, the two leaders discussed the tariffs as well as other matters.

No arrest for Chidambaram till July 10

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

A special court here on Tuesday extended interim protection to former Union Minister P. Chidambaram from arrest till July 10 in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.

Special Judge O.P. Saini announced the order and directed him to join the investigation whenever required.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought more time to file response on Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea.

On May 30, the court granted interim protection to Chidambaram from arrest till June 5.

Earlier, the court had granted interim protection to Karti Chidambaram from arrest till July 10 in the same case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the ED are investigating how Karti Chidambaram allegedly managed to get a clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in the Aircel-Maxis deal when his father P. Chidambaram was the Finance Minister in 2006.

Kumaraswamy said for Harmonious Solution for Cauvery Issue after meeting Kamal Hassan

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today pitched for finding a harmonious solution to the Cauvery water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu after film star-turned-politician Kamal Hassan met him here and took up the issue.

Speaking to reporters along with Hassan, he underlined the need for a cordial relationship between the two neighboring states and said that the farmers of Karnataka were as important as their Tamil Nadu counterparts.

“What Kamal Hassan has said about the Cauvery Management Board (authority) is that both the states should maintain cordial relations. Whatever problem is there, we have to equally share it. Karnataka farmers are as important as Tamil Nadu farmers. The issue should be sorted out cordially without giving a scope for any differences,” Kumaraswamy said.

Hassan, who recently launched his political outfit ‘Makkal Needhi Maiam’, replied in the affirmative to a question whether he took up the issue of the Cauvery board (authority) and expressed satisfaction over the attitude of Kumaraswamy.

“Yes. It has been set up. We would like it to be expedited and this attitude (of Kumaraswamy) is what we are looking forward to. We are like brothers. I am happy there is the chief minister who is looking at it in the same manner,” he said.

Noting that Cauvery had been there even when they were not born, the actor said, “It will be there, it should be there.” Acting on the Supreme Court’s direction, the Centre had on Friday last constituted the CMA to address the dispute over sharing of river water among the riparian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.

The apex court had directed the government on February 16, to form the CMA within six weeks in a verdict that marginally increased Karnataka’s share of Cauvery water, reduced the allocation for Tamil Nadu and sought to settle the protracted water dispute between the two southern states.

When Hassan was reminded that the governments in Tamil Nadu always tried to resolve the issue through court, he said courts were never a solution to the problem. It was only the people-to-people contact that can resolve the issue.

“I see hope in the conversation I had with him (Kumaraswamy) and that’s more important. The way forward will be found by people with a mindset to go forward,” said Hassan.

To a question whether he would discuss with the Tamil Nadu government just as he spoke to Hassan, Kumaraswamy said he was prepared, provided his counterpart was ready for talks.

Kumaraswamy stressed that it was the duty of the two governments to resolve the disputes within the framework of the Constitution and the federal system.

Replying to a query whether the Tamil Nadu government’s line of thinking was similar to his, Hassan said, “It doesn’t matter. I come on behalf of people and he (Kumaraswamy) is also talking on behalf of the people.”

When asked whether he wanted to be the bridge between the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Hassan said he can be “a squirrel, a bridge and even the slippers people walk on.” “I can be anything, sir. I am ready to be that because I am a new party. I am a child. I am willing to have no luggage,I have no egos. I have come here to just ask because the Kuruvai (paddy) crops are coming up and fortunately after his (Kumaraswamy) swearing-in, the catchment has seen some rain. So, you can afford to be kind,” Hassan added.

Water for irrigation is traditionally released from the Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu for Kuruvai on June 12 annually but seems unlikely this year as had been on several other occasions due to low storage.

Karnataka had, early last month, said it was not in a position to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

Haasan’s meeting with Kumaraswamy comes at a time when his contemporary Rajinikanth, who has announced his intentions to launch a political party, is facing a ban on his upcoming film “Kaala” in Karnataka over his remarks on Cauvery issue.

However, replying to a question, Haasan said the issue was not discussed in his meeting with the chief minister.

“Discussion was not about ‘Kaala’. Not a word was spoken about it. There is a (film) chamber, business community who will take care of it,” he added.

Upset with Rajinikanth’s reported statement that whichever government comes to power in Karnataka should implement the Supreme Court order on Cauvery water sharing in toto, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has announced it would not allow screening of ‘Kaala’, due for release on June 7, in the state.
