Powar appointed India women’s cricket coach till World T20

Former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar was on Tuesday officially appointed head coach of the women’s national team until the ICC World T20 scheduled for November 2018.

“The BCCI has appointed Ramesh Powar as head coach of the Indian women’s team. Powar has now been handed over full time duties till November 30, 2018,” a BCCI statement confirmed.

The 40-year-old Powar was initially appointed interim coach last month, a week after former first-class cricketer Tushar Arothe submitted his papers citing personal reasons.

The upcoming tour of Sri Lanka will be the first assignment for Powar as head coach.

“His term will include the tour to Sri Lanka in September, a bilateral series in the West Indies in October followed by the ICC Women’s World T20 in the West Indies in November,” the statement further said.

The T20 World Cup, starting November 9 will see India facing New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and one of the qualifying teams in the league stage.

Chhattisgarh Governor dead

Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Dass Tandon died here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Raman Singh said. He was 91.

The Governor was put on life support earlier in the day after his health condition turned critical, hospital sources said.

Tandon was admitted to the Raipur Medical College late on Monday after he complained he was not feeling well. On Tuesday, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

BOLLYWOOD’S PATRIOTIC FILMS

{TO COMMEMORATE THE INDEPENDENCE DAY ON 15TH AUGUST}

There seems to be a very thin line demarcating the war films, the historical films or even the patriotic films of the Hindi Cinema, in a way all these 3 categories are totally interlinked. As the real or even the reel life warriors have always fought the varied battles out of sheer patriotism, for the intense love for their country and have then become historical figures in the process.

So some of the earliest Black & White Patriotic Films, steeped in extreme patriotism, of the Hindi Cinema have been made as early as the year 1925 onwards for i.e. Charkha & Veer Kunal in the year 1925, Bhagwa Jhanda alias Saffron flag in the year 1926, Flag Of Honor in the year 1929, Patriot in the year 1930, The Battle, Martyr & Sword Of Allah in the year 1931, Shan – E – Hindustan & Hindustan in the year 1932 & Bharat Veer in the year 1933 to name just a handful of them.

And then with the advent of the color era it was Manoj Kumar, more popularly known as Mr. Bharat, who had totally dominated the patriotic scenario in the 60’s & the 70’s decade firstly by acting in a Black & White film titled Shaheed in the year 1965, in which even the Late Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had made a cameo appearance, and 2ndly by going on to make more & more such patriotic films in color like Upkar, Kranti, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan et al and of course all his films not only emphasized but also reflected his intense patriotic fervor and even his deep-rooted love for his motherland, India. In fact, Manoj Kumar was to Patriotic films, what the Ramsay’s were to Horror films.

Then it took a Hollywood director like Richard Attenborough to rekindle the patriotic loyalty of the Indians by making a Celluloid Masterpiece film Gandhi starring who else but a Hollywood actor Ben Kingsley in the title role. No wonder then, that the Indian directors followed suit with Shyam Benegal leading the brigade when he made a film titled The Making Of Mahatma Gandhi starring Rajat Kapoor in the title role of Mahatma Gandhi.

Thereafter the decade of the 60’s also saw a few classic yet very successful Patriotic Films made by the late Producer – Director Chetan Anand titled Haqueequat {Not to speak of the Ajay Devgan starrer of the same name but made in the 90’s decade} starring Dharmendra & the Late Priya Rajvansh besides a host of other stars of that era. Then there were also films like Hum Hindustani starring rank newcomers & Producer – Director Mehboob Khan’s film Son Of India also starring newcomers.

While some of the other such patriotic films of the 40’s & the 50’s decade include Pyara Watan, Hum Dono starring the evergreen the Late Dev Anand in a double role, Sher – E – Watan, Hind Ke Lal, Hamara Watan, Hamara Desh, Hindustan Hamara, Bharat Ke Lal, Bharat Ki Beti and the most talked about film of that era namely Dharti Ke Lal. And a series of films, of the funster duo the late Mehmood Ali – the Late I. S. Johar starrer like Johar Mehmood in Goa, Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong et al. Yet all these films were like just a few drops in an ocean.

Cut to the decade of the 60’s to the 90’s where apart from the Manoj Kumar brand of Patriotic Films there were other notable films too like 5 Rifles, Leader, Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara, Desh Ke Dushman, the Late Rajesh Khanna starrer Apna Desh, Azaad Desh Ke Ghulam, Bharat Ke Shaheed, Mithun Chakroborty starrer Watan Ke Rakhwale, Kamal Hasan starrer Mayor Saab {Dubbed version of the original Tamil film} and then even the mighty Big B had acted in a couple of such Deshbhakti oriented films like Desh Premee, Inquilab, Main Azaad Hoon, 7 Hindustani, Hindustan Ki Kasam, Major Sahab & Khuda Gawah. Besides how can one forget the midget hero Aamir Khan’s earlier film Sarfarosh and the last released patriotic saga Lagaan albeit being a little off the pitch.

Besides how can one overlook the Punjabi Jat Dharmendra & director Anil Sharma’s contributions in this field as together the duo have given quite a few of such hit films like Elaan – E – Jung, Hukumat & Tehelka, While Dharmendra on his own did Ramanand Sagar’s film’s like Aankhen & Lalkar. Next, patriotically following in the footsteps of his father even Sunny Deol has served his own doses or rather sometimes overdoses of patriotism from time to time with a few notable films like Indian, The Hero, Zor, Gadar – Ek Prem katha and many more besides the dud caper Jaal – The Trap. So what if terrorism had also seeped in, in some of them, by raising its ugly head.

In between there were other such highly impressive films too like the Nana Patekar starrer Krantiveer directed by Mehul Kumar, Krantishetra & Sardar. While one more released patriotic film turned out to be Subhashchandra Bose. Incidentally the last 2 films both directed by Shyam Benegal had also given a great insight into the life & times of these patriotic leaders of our Nation.

A special, well deserved mention at this juncture should also be made of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film 1942 – A Love Story starring Anil Kapoor & J. P. Dutta’s film Border & LoC – Kargil starring a galaxy of Bollywood stars. But the earlier mentioned film had also claimed quite a few of the casualties in the Capital State New Delhi, a result of a bomb explosion allegedly planted by some anti – social elements, while the devout & the patriotic patrons were engrossed in watching the same film Border in Uphaar theatre out there.

And finally in the new millennium one also witnessed a new trend of patriotic filmmaking, in fact a mad rush to jump onto the bandwagon of simultaneously making films based on one subject, on one particular patriotic figure and this time around and in this case it was our nation’s most revered martyr Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Hence as many as 5 films were made on the legendary cult figure namely Tips films The Legend Of Bhagat Singh starring Ajay Devgan, Dharmendra’s home production banner Vijeta film’s 1931 Shaheed Bhagat Singh starring Sunny Deol as Chandrashekhar Azaad & Bobby Deol in the title role, Shaheed – E – Azam Bhagat Singh starring the then rank newcomer Sonu Sood, besides 2 other unreleased films with inane titles which incidentally also got dumped into the trash cans of the cine laboratories of Mumbai.

Not only this, as believe it or not there were as many as 5 films being made on another legendary political figure the Late Indira Gandhi. But nothing of those films was heard after its initial launch with a big fanfare.

Besides not to be left behind and out of the rat race of this patriotic wave even the small screen at that time had dabbled with its own version of the patriotic brand of teleserials like Kashmeer on Star Plus channel which was also later on unceremoniously pulled off the air midway and then there was Mulk on Zee TV Channel which had also suffered the same fate.

To round it off on a patriotic note all the Satellite Channels are now in the mad rush of being one up on each other, as each one of them are drawing up their own schedules & plans to telecast most of the past patriotic films of those times, no doubt, to commemorate the eve of the republic day on the 15th of Aug this year. Besides even reams & reams of papier-mâché would be insufficient to recount each & every Indian patriotic films till this date. Period!

I don’t believe in soft Hindutva, says Rahul

Congress President Rahul Gandhi made it clear on Tuesday that he was not wedded to Hindutva – “soft or hardcore”.

In an interaction with editors, Gandhi did not agree that he was embracing soft Hindutva to appease the majority community.

“I don’t believe in any kind of Hindutva, soft or hard core,” he said.

Gandhi said there was nothing wrong in his meeting religious leaders and visiting religious places.

His differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he insisted, were ideological and not personal.

Gandhi, on a two-day visit to Hyderabad, predicted that Narendra Modi would not become Prime Minister in 2019.

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not even get 230 Lok Sabha seats and hence there was no question of Modi continuing in office again. The BJP tally would be cut primarily due to the alliance among non-BJP parties in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

He also pointed out that several allies of the BJP, including Shiv Sena, were against Modi becoming the Prime Minister for a second term.

The Congress President said the party was working with like-minded parties to form a grand alliance to defeat the BJP.

He was confident that a Congress-led alliance would form the next government at the Centre.

He evaded a direct reply to a question on who would be the Prime Minister in the event of Congress and other non-BJP parties getting a majority. He merely said they would work it out.

He was also non-committal on whether the Congress would repeat the Karnataka formula, where it accepted the leader of a party with fewer seats as the Chief Minister to prevent the BJP from taking power.

Asked about his hug to Modi in Parliament, Gandhi said it was intended to show that he doesn’t hate people.

He, however, said the Prime Minister was cold in his response. He alleged that Modi doesn’t give due respect to political rivals.

He voiced concern over growing intolerance in the country. He said that minorities were feeling insecure.

Gandhi said the party’s state units were free to have alliances with like-minded parties. He was confident that the Congress would come to power in Telangana.

Asked about Andhra Pradesh, where Congress drew a blank in the 2014 polls, he said the party was improving its position.

He said Modi had failed to implement his promise of providing two crore jobs annually.

“China provides employment to 50,000 people in 24 hours while in India only 458 people get employment during this duration,” he said.

In a lighter vein, Gandhi remarked that he was wedded to the Congress.

“I am wedded to Congress,” he said when he was asked about his marriage plans.

Late Om Puri Slashed Fees For His Last Film, ‘Lashtam Pashtam’

Rajkummar Rao’s Fear Of Bats!

Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy, Stree, has explored the simple, yet beautiful city of Chanderi which has never been seen before in Bollywood. The film encapsulates the raw beauty of the city. As the concept of the film goes, the makers also identified a few places less visited even by the locals of Chanderi which roused fear in some of the cast members! During an intense sequence in the film, the makers had to take Rajkummar into a real cave. During its’ shoot, Rajkummar had to walk in with a fire torch into the cave. The actor, all set to give another good shot walked in as his character, however, he stood shocked in his track when he heard loud chirps and a colony of bats flew out from around him. The actor came out of the cave with very high heart beats and made sure that the next time he had to go inside a few team members entered before him in the cave and stay there till he arrives. While it was a scary experience for Rajkummar Rao, the team had a great laugh seeing the expression on the actor’s face. The horror comedy has been directed by Amar Kaushik and is all set to release on 31st Aug, 2018.

Shahid Kapoor & Kiara Advani Recreated Yo Yo Honey Singh’s Song

Shahid Kapoor, who is gearing up for the release of his next film Batti Gul Meter Chalu, is also busy burning the dance floor in Mumbai studios to feature in the video of a Shingle, being produced by T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar. A recreated version of Urvashi, the chartbuster from the Prabhudheva-Nagma starrer 1994’s Tamil film Kadhalan, the Bhushan Kumar-produced song also features Kiara Advani. Recreated, written & sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh, the video is currently being shot by director Gifty in Mumbai. “We’ve changed the lyrics, but the hook line remains the same. We are shooting on a club set in Film City. We also filmed in a parking lot to give the video an underground kind of a feel,” informs choreographer Sanjay Shetty. Even Kiara is a fab dancer.” “I know the pressure one goes through when a classic song is recreated. There will be comparisons. This could be my ode to Prabhu sir,” says the actress, adding that she has grown up listening to the original “Urvashi” number. Says Bhushan Kumar, “Yo Yo Honey Singh has recreated this version and we are rekindling the onscreen magic with Shahid Kapoor & Kiara Advani as per the tastes of today’s young generation who will have a have blast dancing to this song when it releases.”

Sushant Singh Rajput is all set to live his dreams. He has recently been seen focusing on accomplishing his wish list which he refers to as ‘Loving your Dream” list. Nawazuddin Siddiqui may have reached exponential heights as one of the finest actors in the country today, however, the star continues to remain grounded to his roots. Nawaz who hails from a small town (Budhana) and has a background in agriculture is scouting for a plot in Kasara. We wanted to buy a plot close to Mumbai so that he can drive down to Kasara whenever he has the time. We have finalized a few plots that are close to the river, and will seal the deal by this week.” Adding that, “Last year, we had implemented new irrigation techniques in Budhana, which helped the farmers there tremendously. Similarly, Nawaz bhai & I want to create awareness here too.”

Yash Raj Film’s Blockbuster ‘Sultan’ All Set To Release In China On 31st Aug 2018

Salman Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer Sultan, the homegrown story of an underdog that wins against all odds, broke box office turnstiles records and won over audiences in India. Now the powerful wrestling drama is all set to get a wide release across China on 31st Aug, 2018. Yash Raj Films collaborates with leading distribution company E Stars China to screen Sultan in over 11,000 screens, targeting around 40,000 shows a day. The film will release with the same title, Sultan. Produced by Yash Raj Films & directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Sultan’s story resonates universally. It will get a Chinese subtitled release. Veteran Filmmaker Yeshant Pethkar’s Grandson Sumeet Kant Kaul Makes His Debut

Sumeet Kant Kaul, an accomplished theatre artiste from Delhi; also the maternal grandson of Yeshwant Pethkar, the pioneer Producer-Director of Indian cinema who gave break to legendary actors, Dev Anand & Pran in Aghe Bado & Apradh and also directed Madhubala, Geeta Bali etc, makes his debut as the antagonist in a film called Pakhi, based on child trafficking. “Every 8 minutes a child is being kidnapped. Every one hour, a child is being trafficked in our country. The child could be yours or mine. This issue disturbed my mind & heart,” says Sumeet Kant Kaul. The film sees Sumeet play a negative character of a Don of the flesh trade who snatches children to drown them in the quicksand of prostitution & child marriage. It has been a challenging role for the young man. “I began to live the character of Bali and as a method actor I used to imagine this character being equivalent to 100 Ravans. Bali believed that Dark Forces were protecting him and he used to think that he was invisible.” Sumeet Kant Kaul seeks his inspiration from Amitabh Bachchan, Anthony Hopkins & Ranveer Singh and attributes his histrionics to the fact that he began his career as an Assistant Director, learning the ropes of filmmaking as much as facing the camera.

Rajinikanth politically immature: Jayakumar

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar on Tuesday said actor Rajinikanth did not know the state’s political history and was politically immature after he converted a condolence meeting for DMK President M. Karunanidhi to launch himself as a full-time politician.

Jayakumar also said that in his speech, the actor-turned-politician tried to woo Karunanidhi’s followers to his side.

The AIADMK leader was reacting to Rajinikanth’s statement made at the condolence meeting organized by the South Indian Artistes Association here on Monday in memory of the late Karunanidhi.

He said it was not a healthy practice to talk politics at a condolence meeting and Rajinikanth’s speech showed his political immaturity. “Movie shooting and meetings are not the same.”

Rajinikanth had said he would have protested if the government had gone on appeal against the High Court order in favour of burying Karunanidhi’s body at the Marina beach.

The Minister wondered if Rajinikanth would have walked freely had he said such things during the lifetime of MGR or J. Jayalalithaa.

Jayakumar said Rajinikanth’s political opportunism would not pay.

Rajinikanth also questioned the absence of Chief Minister K. Palaniswami at the Marina beach for Karunanidhi’s burial when several other leaders were present there.

“Are you Jayalalithaa or MGR (M.G.Ramachandran, founder of AIADMK)?” he asked of the present AIADMK leaders.

Jayakumar said space was allotted for burying Karunanidhi’s body near Gandhi Mandapam here without showing any political vendetta.

The DMK and family members of the Karunanidhi had sought space on the Marina to bury the former Chief Minister’s body who died here on August 7.

The Tamil Nadu government turned down the request citing legal hurdles and offered alternative site.

Later the DMK moved the Madras High Court, which ordered the Tamil Nadu government to permit burial of Karunanidhi’s body at Marina.

Kohli slips to No.2 in ICC Test rankings

India skipper Virat Kohli dropped a spot to No.2 in the latest ICC rankings for Test batsmen, a day after his side slumped to an innings and 159-run loss to England in the Lord’s Test.

Kohli, who rose to the numero-uno spot by overtaking banned Australian Steve Smith last week, scored 23 and 17 at the home of cricket, even as the visitors succumbed for 107 and 130, to concede a 0-2 lead to the hosts in the five-Test rubber.

Besides Kohli, his deputy Ajinkya Rahane (23), and openers Lokesh Rahul (25), Murali Vijay (34) and Shikhar Dhawan (26) also slipped in their rankings.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin was the notable exception, moving up in the list for batsmen from 67th to 57th, with defiant innings of 29 and 33 not out.

Ashwin has also leap-frogged South Africa’s Vernon Philander to grab the third position among all-rounders.

For England, wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow’s 93-run knock has lifted him back into the top 10, in ninth place.

Among the bowlers, veteran quick James Anderson has become only the seventh England bowler and the first in 38 years from his country to breach the 900-point mark.

No.1-ranked Anderson’s outstanding match figures of 9/43 have enabled him to reach 903 points and join a select group comprising Sydney Barnes (932), George Lohmann (931), Tony Lock (912), Ian Botham (911), Derek Underwood (907) and Alec Bedser (903), all of whom peaked at over 900 points during their careers.

Anderson now leads second-placed South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada by 21 points in the bowlers’ list.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin are stable at No.3 and No.5, respectively with Philander separating the duo.

Among others, India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has moved up 25 places to take the 74th spot among bowlers.

England’s Chris Woakes, who slammed an unbeaten 137 in England’s only innings and chipped in with four wickets in the match, has gained 34 places to reach a career-best 50th position among batsmen while also moving up three places to 32nd among bowlers and by five places to seventh among all-rounders.

India eves secure semis berth with 1-0 win over Bhutan

India progressed to the semi-finals of the SAFF Under-15 Football Championship, defeating hosts Bhutan 1-0 at the Changlimithang Stadium here on Monday.

Shilky Devi’s 58th-minute strike proved to be the difference between the two teams in a match tightly contested where India rattled the bar twice.

With this win, India top Group A, winning both of their matches. India will face either Nepal or Bangladesh in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Although Bhutan started the game on an attacking note and dominated possession in the early minutes of the match, the Indian girls had an excellent opportunity to go ahead in the 13th minute but Kiran failed to make the most of her chance from inside the box.

In the 31st minute, India rattled the woodwork after Sunita Munda found Kritina Devi on the flanks with some crafty work. Kritina’s first time effort from long range hit the bar and came back into play, only for her to shoot wide off the resulting ball.

Five minutes later, Bhutan caught the Indian defence napping and hit the side netting from inside the box to give the Indians a scare.

Shilky Devi’s volley from inside the box in the 41st minute went inches over the bar as India continued to press the opponents. A stalemate ensued at half-time as both teams went into the tunnel on level pegging.

In the 55th minute, Avika Singh’s effort from a distance rattled the crossbar but India had to wait for the breakthrough that came three minutes later. Shilky Devi found the back of the opponent’s net with ease from inside the box with sheer composure in the 58th minute to give India the lead as the scoreline read 1-0.

India pressed to double their advantage and came close when Shilky’s shot missed the target. On the other end, the Indian defence had a busy day to stop Bhutan’s counter-attacks that came quite frequently.

Bhutan committed to attack to search for an equalising goal but the Indian defence shut the gates tight and held on to eke out a 1-0 win over the hosts.

Take Solutions Masters champ Viraj Madappa jumps 1101 spots in golf rankings

Indian golfer Viraj Madappa, who won the Take Solutions Masters title last weekend in Bengaluru, has jumped from 1561st rank to be 460th in the world rankings, which were announced on Monday.

Madappa became the record youngest Indian, at the age of 20 years and nine months, to win on the Asian Tour as he claimed a two-shot victory at the Take Solutions Masters.

That win has catapulted him inside the top-500 rankings for the first time in his career.

The Bengaluru event also proved beneficial for Khalin Joshi and S.S.P. Chawrassia. Khalin, who finished tied sixth, jumped 48 places to be 376th. Chawrasia, who also finished sixth in Bengaluru, vaulted 33 places to be 380th.

However, Shubhankar Sharma and Anirban Lahiri dropped four places each to be ranked 92nd and 97th respectively after failing to make the weekend cut in the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Championship — which resulted in their losing ground.

The third highest ranked Indian, Gaganjeet Bhullar, dropped three places to be 117th, while Ajeetesh Sandhu moved down two places to be at the 230th spot.

Shiv Kapur maintained his 232nd rank, while Rahil Gangjee dropped two places to be 328th.

Meanwhile, United States’ Dustin Johnson maintained the No.1 spot, while his compatriot Brooks Koepka climbed two spots to world No.2 after his victory at the PGA Championship on Sunday, dropping his countryman Justin Thomas to the next spot, reports Efe.

Having finished fourth in the same tournament, Spain’s Jon Rahm jumped to the fifth place, replacing Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who dropped to world No.7.

US’ Tiger Woods, meanwhile, jumped from world No.51 to the 26th, thanks to his second-place showing at the PGA Championship in Town and Country, Missouri.

Further down in the rankings, Adam Scott of Australia rocketed 31 places to 45th after finishing third on Sunday, while former world No.99 Stewart Cink of the US was elevated to world No.70 after his fourth-place finish at the PGA Championship.

England name unchanged squad for third Test

The England selectors have named an unchanged squad for the third cricket Test against India at Trent Bridge, starting August 18.

Already 2-0 up in the five-match Test rubber after wins at Edgbaston and Lord’s, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement that it will make an assessment of all-rounder Ben Stokes’ availability after the conclusion of the trial in Bristol.

This means Stokes is likely to miss out even if he is found not guilty of affray at Bristol Crown Court this week.

Stokes’ absence from the Lord’s Test, however, did not affect England in the second game, with fellow all-rounder Chris Woakes striking his maiden century and putting in a man-of-the-match performance.

Woakes registered a maiden Test century, scoring 137 not out, along with match figures of 4/43.
