Syria declares re-opening of Nasib border crossing with Jordan

September 29, 2018 by Nasheman

The Syrian Ministry of Transportation on Saturday announced the re-opening of the Nasib border crossing with Jordan, which has been closed since 2015.

A ministry statement cited by the state news agency SANA said the border crossing was opened and the movement of trucks and transit to and from Syria resumed.

The border crossing was closed in 2015 when the rebels took over the Nasib area and the crossing in the countryside of Daraa province in Syria.

The Syrian Army captured Daraa and the border crossing in July after the rebels in the province surrendered and agreed to evacuate to rebel-held areas in northern Syria, mainly the northwestern province of Idlib.

Last week, the Transportation Ministry declared raising the transit crossing fees that should be paid by trucks passing in and out of Syria whether they were loaded or empty.

The Nasib crossing is the busiest border crossing in Syria as it is situated on the Damascus-Amman international highway.

The crossing is also considered one of the most important land crossings in the Middle East as it is the main crossing for Syrian exports to Jordan and the Gulf countries.

Lebanon would also benefit from the re-opening of the Nasib crossing as the small Mediterranean country has crossings with Syria only and through Nasib it can do business with Arab markets.

The crossing is important for Jordan which is suffering from economic problems. Since it was closed in 2015, the kingdom suffered heavy losses as 70 per cent of its exports and imports went through Syria, according to Nabil Ruman, head of the investor’s board of the Jordanian Free Zone.

Reports said the losses of the Jordanian transport sector from the border closure was estimated at around half a billion US dollars.

Powerful typhoon Trami pounds southern Japan

September 29, 2018 by Nasheman

A powerful typhoon has brought heavy rain and high winds as it battered southern Japan, leading to flight cancellations and power outages in several cities.

Typhoon Trami, rated Category 2, is the latest storm to threaten Japan in a year of grim weather-related woes, including punishing heat, heavy rains and landslides.

Outlying islands in the Okinawan chain, around 1,000 km southwest of Tokyo, were being pounded by heavy rain and high tides on Saturday.

Winds with gusts of up to 216 kph knocked down trees, blew off an outer wall from a building and left 17 people injured in Okinawa.

Local officials said no one was feared dead as a result of the storm.

About 195,000 households lost electricity on Okinawa and other neighbouring small islands, according to Okinawa Electric Power.

Public broadcaster NHK said more than 380 flights were cancelled, mainly those flying in and out of Okinawa.

Churning north across Okinawa on Saturday, Trami is then predicted to move across the islands of Kyushu and the main island of Honshu on Sunday, a path similar to that taken by typhoon Jebi early in September.

Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years, brought some of the highest tides since a 1961 typhoon and flooded Kansai airport near Osaka, taking it out of service for days.

The season’s 24th typhoon “might cause a catastrophe with storm surges, high waves, powerful winds and torrential rains,” an agency official told a news conference on Friday in Naha, the island’s capital, the local Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper reported.

Rainfall of up to 400mm was forecast for the Amami island region and up to 250mm for Okinawa by noon Sunday, while the storm could generate waves up to 13 metres high around the regions, forecasters said.

You can’t stop Pakistani women from thinking, dreaming: Author Taha Kehar

September 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Meet Tanya, the protagonist of a new quick-read from Pakistan, who has “got a pretty good life, working for a Karachi newspaper and smoking-drinking-flirting her way through minor romantic escapades”. The author, Taha Kehar, says that her character is his attempt to cultivate a narrative about what it means to be a woman in Karachi. But are there really many “politically opinionated, liberal, urban women that are both feisty and fearless”, as Tanya is, in Pakistan today?

Kehar, the author of “Typically Tanya”, said that it wasn’t entirely necessary for women in Pakistan (or anywhere else in the world for that matter) to be “liberal” or “urban” in order to have “bold political opinions or take on a fearless, feisty approach to life”.

“Although Pakistan is an inherently patriarchal society where women are subjected to restrictions and excessive surveillance, no measure of constraints can stop them from thinking, dreaming and forging their way in the world. Women in Pakistan have entered the public domain and are reclaiming it by negotiating gender confrontations and challenging archaic norms,” Kehar told IANS in an email interview from Karachi, describing his frame of mind as he shaped Tanya’s character.

He shared that Tanya may epitomise the struggle of Pakistani women, but she belongs to “a privileged segment of Karachi’s elite” that “can operate within a bubble and turn a blind eye to the ground realities”.

“By virtue of her social status, she manages to evade some patriarchal demands and has the freedom to ignore the restrictions imposed by the public sphere. But even then, it would be flawed to assume that she isn’t influenced by patriarchy in her everyday life. While writing ‘Typically Tanya’, I had to remain mindful of these subtle nuances,” he said.

Kehar, himself a journalist, said that he wanted to break away from Western ideas of Karachi as “a battle-hardened, conflict-riddled city” and understand it from the perspective of its citizens.

He also admitted that the male gaze could claw its way into the narrative and possibly even shrink the space for the female perspective. “The primary challenge was to elbow away all male-centric notions to prevent them from distorting Tanya’s perspective,” he said, adding that he discussed his protagonist’s traits with some of his female friends, who spent their days cooped up in newsrooms like Tanya does in the novel.

Maintaining that Tanya’s experiences may not be “entirely representative” of all independent and modern Pakistani women, Kehar, however, asserted that like most of them, Tanya recognises “the importance of making her own choices” and “taking charge of her own life”.

The author, published in both Indian and Pakistani media, said that Indian readers might enjoy Tanya’s humour, her friendship with Inder, an Indian journalist who is reporting from Pakistan. The book might also interest some readers who enjoy political polemics.

Asked to describe his novel for Indian readers, the author obliged, saying: “‘Typically Tanya’ is about Karachi, journalism and relationships between misfits. It is about a woman’s journey in negotiating these minefields. The protagonist isn’t obsessed with marriage and is unwilling to compromise her own dignity at the altar of a groom chosen by a rishta aunty.”

Kehar has previously published a collection of poems and “Typically Tanya” is his debut novel. Published by HarperCollins India, it is priced at Rs 299.

58 million Indians living without pension: Survey

September 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Fifty eight million people in India are living without pension or any other form of assistance, civil society organisation Pension Parishad has said.

Citing the State of Pensions in India Report 2018, Economist Prabhat Patnaik said the Central government spends as little as 0.04 per cent of the GDP for its flagship Indira Gandhi National Social Assistance (IGNOAPS) programme for ensuring income security for the elderly.

“It will cost only about 1.6 per cent of the present-day GDP to ensure 90 per cent of the elderly population a pension of Rs 2,500 per person every month,” Patnaik said.

According to National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), a welfare programme administered by the Ministry of Rural Development, 80 million elderly people in India are entitled to a pension of Rs 200 per month.

This meagre amount reaches only about 22.3 million people, Pension Parishad Coordinator, Nikhil Dey said.

The organisation also pointed out that countries like Nepal, Bolivia, Lesotho, Bostwana, Ecuador — all much smaller economies as compared to India — ensure better social pensions for their elderly citizens.

Rohit meanwhile, also praised Bangladesh for their fighting spirit in a do-or-die contest.

“You have to give some credit to Bangladesh. They put us under pressure in the first 10 overs,” said the 31-year-old right hander.

“It wouldn’t be easy if we didn’t have the support of the remaining 10 players, so I am really proud of the boys,” the India skipper said praising his teammates.

On the other hand, commenting on the match, Bagladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said: “We bowled really well, particularly if we made 240+. We asked the batsmen to make at least 260, but at the end of the day the bowlers did really well.”
