HC extends interim protection to Chidambaram in INX media case

 The Delhi High Court on Thursday extended former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s interim protection from arrest in the INX Media money laundering case till January 15.

The court was hearing Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail petition, seeking protection from arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case.

On July 25, the court had granted him interim protection, which was later extended to November 29.

The ED and the CBI are probing how Chidambaram’s son Karti managed to get clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

Karti was arrested on February 28 by the CBI for allegedly taking money to facilitate the FIPB clearance to INX Media in 2007 when his father was the Union Finance Minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Later, Karti was granted bail.

Karti’s chartered accountant S. Bhaskararaman was arrested in the case by the ED and he too was later granted bail.

Margaret Alva, Gopala Rao & Guruva Koraga among Rajyotsava awardees

The Karnataka Rajyotsava awards of this year are announced and 63 eminent personalities including H L Dattu, retired chief justice of Supreme Court, Hiriadka Gopal Rao, senior Yakshagana artist, Guruva Koraga, Janapada artist, Margaret Alva, former central minister, D Surendra Kumar of Dharmasthala and famous director Bhargava.

The awards will be presented to the chosen personalities by CM Kumaraswamy on Thursday, November 29 at the Banquet Hall of Vidhana Soudha.

Generally, these awards are presented on November 1, the day of Rajyotsava every year but this year it was delayed because of election code of conduct. In the present list, even people who have not applied for the award but were eligible due to their contribution for the state are selected for the award.

It is commendable that Kenneth Lawrence, a resident of Kolar, who was popularly known as ‘Gentleman Sprinter’ and who took part in the 1964 Olympics is selected by the state government for the award.

The specialty of this year’s awards is a good mixture of senior centenarian citizens with senior freedom fighters. Guruva Koraga, senior citizen and Dolu artist from Udupi has completed 100 years of his life. Guruva from Hiriadka learnt beating the drum or Dolu right from his childhood from the elders in the family and continued in the same profession. He has carved a niche for himself in the Janapada field of Udupi district. Similarly, Hiriadka Gopal Rao, who is known as the ‘Maddale Mantrika’, is also 99-years-old. Gopal Rao, who is very famous in the field of Yakshagana took part in the freedom fight also.

10 from coastal districts among the awardees, Janapada artiste Guruva Koraga, Maddale artiste Gopal Rao, former central minister Margaret Alva, vice-president of SDM education society D Surendra Kumar, senior journalist Amembal Anand, director of Medical Science Institutes of London Dr A A Shetty, famous Nagaswara artist Annu Devadiga, entrepreneur Anand C Kunder, popular Yakshagana comedian Kateel Sitaram Kumar and managing trustee of Sevanjali Pratistana, Farangipet are the ones from the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, who are the recipients of this year’s Rajyotsava awards.

Bengaluru has a lion’s share in this year’s awards. The other districts who have found places mainly among the awardees are Kalaburgi, Mysuru and the twin coastal districts. More than 1600 applications were received for this year’s awards.

Police not to arrest Arjun Sarja till Dec 11 : High Court

The Karnataka high court on Wednesday, November 28 directed the Cubbon Park police not to arrest actor Arjun Sarja till December 11.

Hearing the petition filed by Arjun Sarja seeking to quash the FIR registered against him on the basis of the sexual harassment complaint filed by actor actress Sruthi Hariharan, the High Court directed that there was no need to arrest Sarja till December 11.

Sarja in his petition alleged that the case and complaint was a classic case of austere abuse of law and launching of malicious and vile attacks on an innocent man who has thrived hard for 36 years to stand out with the portrait of a gentleman.

HDK says that Aniruddh should have control over his language

Chief Minister Kumaraswamy on Wednesday, November 28 expressed that Aniruddh’s statement against him and the state government has hurt him a lot.

Addressing the press persons after paying his last respects to JD(S) senior leader H S Prakash, Kumaraswamy said that whatever the government does is for the betterment of its people so  Aniruddh, son-in-law of late actor Vishnuvardhan should think before he speaks anything against the government.

” He referred to me as ‘udaaphe CM’ (negligent chief minister), his statement hurt my feelings. Aniruddh should have control over his language” said Kumaraswamy.

Kumaraswamy further said that Aniruddh should understand that efforts Kumaraswamy had put when Vishnuvardhan passed away. Even though he was not CM when actor Vishnuvardhan passed away he spoke to the then CM BS Yeddyurappa and actor Ambareesh to conduct the last rites of Vishnuvardhan with state honours. There is some confusion over Vishnuvardhan’s memorial between his fans and the family members, the government will sort it out soon, he added.

Following Kumaraswamy statements on Anirudh, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan apologized to Kumaraswamy on behalf of Anirudh. She further requested that her husband Vishnuvardhan’s memorial should be built in Mysuru and not in Kanteerava Studio.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the day, the evening saw a candid conversation between superstar Anil Kapoor & his Producer daughter Rhea Kapoor. The actor was welcomed to a loud cheer by a packed house with some even dancing & performing his signature step as a sign of affection towards their icon.

After settling down, daughter Rhea took turns to ask her father about questions pertaining to his journey in the film industry, his positive approach, his fitness & more.

While speaking about his foray into the film industry, the Mr India fame actor said the decision to pursue a career in acting was easy. Anil said, “I was a horse with my blinkers on. From the moment I came to my senses I wanted to be an actor. I was very fortunate to get a break in the form of a young Shashi Kapoor’s role. Since then I have not wasted, constantly dreamt, worked on my craft & worked on being a people’s person. But I am still a work in progress.”

Daughter Rhea then asked her father about the qualities & traits necessary to be an actor, and asked if academic training in theatre & acting is important or whether instincts & practical knowledge matters more. While answering this question, Anil Kapoor said, “To have a foundation of academics is great. But it needs to be combined with the instincts. Everything cannot be studied & planned. I credit my success to my preparedness to fail. But now the stakes are much higher.”

The actor further elaborated, “There are no shortcuts to hard work. I believe that if you’re a trained actor in today’s times, it becomes easy for the director & the writer to mould you. Focusing too much on looks can stagnate you as an actor. It may work for a short period of time but soon there will be nothing left inside to give to the audience, to the writer & to the role. Try & increase your shelf life by being physically, mentally & spiritually fit.”

When asked about the secret of his young appearance, the actor who is a few days short of being 62 years old, said, “I need the energy & stamina to portray the characters. In the process I started looking after myself & working out. I believe you have to look after yourself. For me as an actor I have only one lifetime. I want longevity. I have always believed in marathon. I was never a 100 metre race person. I have been consistent, committed & worked hard, which is why I have been in the business for 38 years.”

When asked by an audience member about what her chosen career path would have been had she not been Anil Kapoor’s daughter, Rhea Kapoor in a frank fashion said, “I am aware of the whole nepotism debate, I know of the privileges of being Anil Kapoor’s daughter. But I have had only 1 father. I cannot help it.” The fashionista then added, “I have been interested in subjects like interior designing, fashion, visual arts & a multitude of other things. But for now I have my focus on producing films.”

 

Farmers from across India converging in Delhi for Kisan March

Thousands of farmers from across the country started to converge in Delhi on Thursday for a two-day protest rally to press for their demands, including debt relief and remunerative prices for their produce.

Farmers, from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states, will march on four different routes in the national capital, starting at three major railway stations Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin and Bijwasan and at Sabzi Mandi, their leaders said.

All the marchers will pour in at Ramlila Ground in the heart of the city by evening. Farmers from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana started trickling in by 10:30 am.

Kamla, a functionary of the All India Kisan Sabha’s Delhi unit, said farmers have also arrived at Majnu Ka Tila, from where they will start marching in groups to Ramlila Maidan. “We hope by 3 pm, farmers from across the country will arrive at Ramlila Ground,” said AIKS.

The two-day rally will be “one of the largest congregations of farmers” in Delhi, the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) claimed on Wednesday.

The AIKSCC, which claims to be an umbrella body of 207 organisations of farmers and agricultural workers, said a cultural programme would be held at Ramlila Ground on Thursday, the first day of the protest, where prominent singers and poets from rural India would perform.

Police said they have made elaborate arrangements for the rally on Friday, when the farmers will begin their march from Ramlila Ground to Parliament Street. Support for farmers have started pouring with activists taking to Twitter to ask the general public to join the march.

“Women farmers greet us this morning from Brijwasan as they are all set to embark on #KisanMuktiMarch. Join us even if you are not a farmer. Join the hands that toil to feed us. Jai Kisan!,” tweeted political activist Yogendra Yadav. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan also tweeted in solidarity with farmers.

“Over 3L farmers have committed suicide in India in last 15 yrs,due to successive govts betraying them. Tomorrow 1 lakh farmers from across the country are marching to Delhi to ask for fair prices& freedom from debt. Let’s stand in solidarity with them,” he said.

Modi, Jaitley resort malicious jugglery in GDP back-series data: Congress

 The Congress on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of resorting to “malicious and fraudulent jugglery” of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures to hide the “enormous body blow” caused by them to India’s economy.

“Failed ‘Modinomics’ plus a ‘pakoda economic vision’ has sunk India’s economy in complete turmoil. A despotic Prime Minister and ‘pseudo economist’ Finance Minister have repeatedly caused economic mayhem by the ill-conceived decisions of demonetisation, a flawed GST coupled with tax terrorism,” Congress Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

“Faced with utter and complete rejection of the ‘voodoo economics’ of Modi and Jaitley duo, they are resorting to malicious and fraudulent jugglery of GDP figures to hide the enormous body blow caused by them to India’s economy,” he said.

His remarks came after the government on Wednesday released the much awaited back-series estimates for India’s GDP which showed a lower rate of growth during the UPA years between 2005-06 and 2011-12 than what was estimated using the earlier methodology.

Surjewala alleged that the entire GDP back series data released by the Centre reflects the desperate attempt of a “defeatist Modi government” to undermine India’s growth story over last 15 years.

“Congress party had repeatedly pointed out that, when the base year was changed, the government should follow the healthy international practice and revise the numbers for the previous years. We had demanded that the back series data of GVA and GDP should be calculated and released so that meaningful comparisons can be made.

“The back series data as released by National Statistical Commission (NSC) in August 2018 is available in public domain. The numbers prove the dictum that truth cannot be suppressed,” Surjewala said.

The Congress Spokesperson said that UPA 1 and UPA 2 delivered the highest decadal growth (8.13 per cent at factor cost) since Independence.

It is also a matter of record that during this period 140 million people were lifted out of poverty, he said, adding the three best years were 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08.

“Arvind Subramanian called them the “boom years”. That golden run would have continued but for the international financial crisis that hit the world in September 2008.”

He said when the UPA demitted office, economic growth had recovered to 6.39 per cent (at market prices) in 2013-14. “Besides, the fiscal deficit had been reduced to 4.48 per cent and the current account deficit had been contained at 1.7per cent.”

Surjewala accused that the revised ‘new series’ computed on Wednesday by the Ministry of Statistics and Niti Aayog has completely undermined the National Statistical Commission, the autonomous body for deciding data transparently and in accordance with global standards of calculating GDP as per market price linked methodology.

“Today, Modi government deceived the country by surreptitiously changing the methodology in order to manipulate GDP data. This is called ‘excel sheet management’ for example deciding the result first and filling the marks later. The new methodology is GVA based, which does not take into account tax, subsidies and consequently is extremely flawed to sub serve the myopic interests of the ruling government,” he said.

Shallow fog, ‘very poor’ air covers Delhi

The national capital on Thursday witnessed shallow fog with ‘very poor’ air quality, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall air quality of the national capital was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category.

“The city witnessed shallow fog in the morning and it will continue in the later part of the day. The humidity at 8.30 a.m. was high at 93 per cent,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

The maximum temperature was likely to hover around 28 degrees Celsius.

On Wednesday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 13.5 degrees Celsius while the maximum was 28.1 degrees, both three notches above the season’s average,

One-third of world’s stunted children live in India: Report

A major study published on Thursday warned of a malnutrition crisis in almost every country in the world with India holding about one-third of the world’s burden for stunting.

Forty-six million children in India are stunted because of malnutrition and 25.5 million more are defined as “wasted” – meaning they do not weigh enough for their height, according to the Global Nutrition Report 2018.

Worldwide, 150.8 million children are stunted and 50.5 million are “wasted”, the report said.

“The uncomfortable question is not so much ‘why are things so bad?’ but ‘why are things not better when we know so much more than before?'” said Corinna Hawkes, co-chair of the report and director of the Centre for Food Policy.

UNICEF: Two million children in DRC are acutely malnourished

Asia is one of the hardest-hit areas when it comes to malnutrition although the region experienced the largest reduction in stunting from 2000 to 2017 – from 38 percent to 23 percent.

In India, high rates of malnutrition lead to anaemia, low birth rates, and delayed development – perpetuated from generation to generation.

Dr Basanta Kumar Kar – who is part of a health committee at NITI Aayog, India’s government think-tank – said stunting in children is poor growth that can cause profound damage to both body and mind.

“Malnutrition is linked to mortality, morbidity, brain/cognitive development, and overall physical growth of a child. A malnourished child is vulnerable to infections and many life-threating diseases,” Kar told media.

“The odds against these children making it to secondary school, let alone managing an intellectually or physically challenging job, is slim. Malnourishment is hence also linked to productivity,” he added.

Of the three countries that are home to almost half (47.2 percent) of all stunted children, two are in Asia: India (46.6 million) and Pakistan (10.7 million).

Researchers behind the Global Nutrition Report, which looked at 140 countries, said the problems called for a critical change in the response to this global health threat.

The Global Nutrition Report is an independently produced annual analysis of the state of the world’s nutrition.

‘Stunted and wasted’

The Global Nutrition Report 2018 found while malnutrition rates are falling globally, their rate of decrease is not fast enough to meet the internationally agreed Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030.

Apart from children’s diets, the report flagged up gender inequality, early child-bearing, open defecation, education, and economic staus as influential factors in India’s malnutrition crisis.

Despite available data, progress on tacking malnutrition is “simply not good enough”, according to the report.

Globally none of the countries with sufficient data are on course to meet all nine targets on malnutrition. India is not set to meet any of them, the report said.

Efforts have been made to ensure children are breastfed and get nutritious food in the crucial first two years of life and to improve the water they drink and sanitation in their homes.

“We are conscious of the fact that a large proportion of our children are stunted and wasted. To attack this problem, we have launched a nutrition mission this year where we will be using new technology to attack this problem,” Rakesh Srivastava, from India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development, told media.

India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy and during the last two decades has recorded economic expansion that helped lift hundreds of millions out of poverty. But it still remains a deeply stratified society with extreme inequality between its rich and poor.

Nikhil Day, at Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, a peasant and workers’ organisation in the western state of Rajasthan, expressed alarm at Thursday’s report.

“We are constantly shocked and disgraced by reports like these. In a country like India – where there is so much emphasis on economic growth rates – our apathy for malnutrition and food security is telling.”

“It robs children of their future and countries of their humanity. This should be a national priority,” he said.

Delhi Police officer commits suicide

 Suffering from depression, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Delhi Police on Thursday committed suicide here by jumping from the 10th floor of the Police Headquarters, police said.

Prem Bhallabh, 55, was being treated for depression at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for the last 28 days, ACP Anil Mittal said.

The incident occurred at 10 a.m. The deceased jumped from the window of his office, Mittal said.

Police personnel deployed at the ground floor heard a loud thud and rushed to the spot. They rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

Prem Bhallabh was posted in the Crime and Traffic wing of Delhi Police.
