As protests shift to state capital, pilgrims flock Sabarimala

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

For the first time since the Sabarimala temple opened on November 16, there has been a sharp increase in the number of pilgrims.

One reason attributed for this is that the protests of the Sangh parivar against the Supreme Court ruling allowing women of all ages to enter the temple and the arrest of its senior leader K. Surendran has shifted to the state Secretariat.

The Congress-led UDF is going hammer and tongs against the Pinarayi Vijayan government in the Kerala Assembly.

According to official figures, on Monday a record 79,098 pilgrims arrived at the temple while till 1 p.m. on Tuesday 40,000 pilgrims has made it to the hilltop shrine.

Yet, the pilgrim flow is much less than what the temple town normally sees during the festival season.

In the previous season, the average number of pilgrims visiting the shrine was around one lakh during the two-month pilgrimage season.

The Kerala government has promised to implement the apex court’s verdict that struck down a hitherto tradition of not allowing girls and women within 10-50 years from visiting the temple.

On Tuesday, a three-member High Court appointed observer committee consisting of two retired judges and a serving Director General of Police arrived at the temple town to inspect the facilities and the arrangements for the pilgrims.

Agusta middleman extradited to India, CBI takes custody

Agusta middleman extradited to India, CBI takes custody

British national Christian Michel James, the middleman wanted in Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case, was extrdited to India on Tuesday night from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was taken straight to the CBI headquarters from the airport here.

The extradition comes as a major boost to the Indian agencies investigating the bribery angle in the contract.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took James, 57, under its custody as soon as he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here around 11 p.m in a special aircraft, accompanied by a team of CBI, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Ministry of External Affairs officials.

Once the immigration process was over at the airport, James went through a medical examination in the presence of customs and other officials.

Subsequently, he was escorted by a Delhi Police team to the CBI headquarters in south Delhi’s Lodhi Road area for interrogation over his alleged role in the purchase of 12 AW-101 VVIP choppers from AgustaWestland.

James would be confronted with documents recovered during raids by the Swiss authorities and shared with the CBI through Letters Rogatory (LRs) — documents used for making request through a foreign court to obtain information from specified person/s within the jurisdiction of that court — indicating the bribes paid by James to the Indian authorities for securing the contract for the supply of VVIP helicopters.

James, who had been avoiding criminal proceedings in India, is likely to be presented at a special CBI court in Delhi’s Patiala House court on Wednesday afternoon.

The central probe agency in a press note said the entire extradition operation was conducted under the guidance of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, with the coordination of interim CBI Director M. Nageswara Rao.

A team led by Joint CBI Director A. Sai Manohar was in Dubai during the extradition process, the note said.

The action comes after the Court of Cassation in the UAE in November upheld a lower court order which said that Michel could be extradited to India.

According to the report, James was kept under detention at the Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), as per the Indian government’s request. The extradition was undertaken in coordination with the Interpol and the Dubai CID.

James is one of the three middlemen being probed by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the alleged scam.

In January, the ED had lodged a request with the UAE authorities for extraditing James. Both ED and CBI had filed chargesheets in bribery cases in Indian courts and non-bailable warrants had been issued against the accused.

Last year, a Red Corner Notice (RCN) was issued against James by the Interpol on a request by the CBI. RCNs were also issued against two Italians — Carlo Gerosa and Guido Haschke — for their role in the case.

According to the Indian investigative agencies, James had received at least Rs 235 crore for ensuring that the chopper contract went to AgustaWestland. He was a frequent visitor to India, having undertaken 300 trips to this country between 1997 and 2013.

Earlier, the ED officials had said that bribes to James were paid through a web of companies located abroad and in India on the pretext of payment for consultancy work. James also used his Dubai-based firm Global Services FZE as a conduit for receiving money.

A CBI chargesheet in the case also named four Indians — former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief S.P. Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi alias Julie, then Vice Chief of the Air Staff J.S. Gujral and advocate Gautam Khaitan.

The chargesheet mentioned Khaitan as the “brain” behind the deal.

Others named in the chargesheet included Giuseppe Orsi, the former chief of Italian defence and aerospace major Finmeccanica, and Bruno Spagnolini, former CEO of AgustaWestland, apart from middlemen James, Haschke and Gerosa.

On January 1, 2014, India cancelled the contract with Finmeccanica’s British subsidiary AgustaWestland for supplying the VVIP choppers to the IAF over alleged breach of contractual obligations and on charges of paying kickbacks to the tune of Rs 423 crore.

The CBI, which registered an FIR in the case on March 12, 2013, had alleged that Tyagi and other accused received kickbacks from AgustaWestland to help it win the contract.

Investigative agencies must remain faceless: Jaitley

December 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Commending the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for remaining free from any major controversy, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the investigative agencies are supposed to be faceless.

Investigative agencies should resist the temptation of going to the media “making a lot of song and dance” when the initial investigation starts and when some haul takes place, Jaitley said addressing DRI officials on its 61st Foundation Day.

“But they must as professionals concentrate on strengthening the investigative processes and the investigative evidences, and therefore have to ensure that what is being investigated ultimately results in penalties and convictions.

“That is the real test of an investigative agency. It has be faceless. The lesser it is in the media controversy or the news, the better it is for it,” the Minister said, adding the DRI has to endeavour to become a near-perfect organisation.

Jaitley said among the cross-section of various investigative agencies including the police and other specialised investigative agencies, “it goes to the credit of the DRI that by and large it has remained free from any collateral controversies”.

The DRI has concentrated on its core area of competence and developed expertise in areas where it is primarily supposed to check any harm being done to the country, economy and the national security, he said commending the DRI officials.

The Minister appreciated the agency for honouring some of its officials including former Additional Commissioner L.D. Arora who made the supreme sacrifice and two former Director Generals who laid down the work and organisational culture of the DRI.

“L.D. Arora became a target of the underworld because of his excellence in the investigative record that he had,” Jaitley said.

Arora, who was posted as Additional Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) of Mumbai Customs, was killed in 1993 at Allahabad by the underworld.

The DRI is an intelligence and investigative agency for matters relating to violation of the Customs Act. It works to secure India’s national and economic security by preventing smuggling of contraband such as firearms, gold, narcotics and fake Indian currency notes.

December 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Three leaders from the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and BJP have been named in the FIR lodged by police in the violence that rocked Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh killing a police officer and a young man, authorities said on Tuesday.

VHP activist Upendra Raghav, BJP city youth wing President Shikhar Agarwal and Bajrang Dal district coordinator Yogesh Raj have been named in the First Information Report in the wake of the violence on Monday.

The police have also arrested two others – said to be villagers – while five persons have been detained in connection with the violence that broke out after the recovery of some animal carcasses that the right-wing groups claimed were of cows.

When Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh tried to reason with the demonstrators and persuade them to clear the traffic jam they had caused, he was attacked both with blunt objects and also fired at, killing him instantly.

A young man was also killed in violence but the circumstances leading to his death are not clear.

The police have registered a case against 88 persons, of whom 25 have been named.

Five police teams have been formed and 22 places have been raided to track down those involved in the violence.

40% foreigners visited India on e-visa: Top official

December 4, 2018 by Nasheman

With 21 lakh e-visas issued this year till November 3, electronic visas now constitute around 40 per cent of the total number of visas issued to foreigners, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba said on Tuesday.

“The number of e-visas issued has seen a tremendous growth during the last four years from 5.17 lakh in 2015 to 21 lakh this year till November 30,” Gauba said while addressing a conference “Streamlining of India’s Visa Regime” here.

“The number of visas issued through e-visa system is now approximately 40 per cent of the total number of visas issued and the figure is soon expected to cross the 50 per cent mark, which is an indication of its popularity. Our e-visa regime is one of the best in the world,” he said.

The Home Secretary said in order to facilitate arrival and stay of foreign travellers into the country, the government is working on creating a simple and hassle-free visa regime.

He said the e-visa facility now covers 166 countries and foreigners can obtain online visa within 72 hours for travel related to tourism, business, health, medical and conference purposes.

He said India had the potential to become a global education and tourism hub but there is a need for change in the mindset at the ground level to make foreigners feel welcome in the country.

Register criminal case against TN CM, Ministers, EC and police officials: Stalin

December 4, 2018 by Nasheman

DMK President M.K. Stalin on Tuesday demanded registration of criminal cases against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, officials of Election Commission, state police and also the person who filed a petition seeking cancellation of the FIR registered in the R.K. Nagar cash-for-vote case.

Stalin also demanded registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on the basis of the documents provided by the Income Tax (IT) department. The Election Commission itself had recommended that the case be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu government informed a two-member bench of the Madras High Court that a single judge bench of the high court had quashed in March the FIR registered against unnamed persons for alleged distribution of cash to the voters of R.K. Nagar assembly constituency.

On April 7, 2017, a couple of days before the bypoll in R.K. Nagar constituency, the IT department raided the house of state Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar and seized documents that showed alleged distribution of huge cash to voters in the constituency. The documents also contained the names of Palaniswami and other ministers.

Subsequently, the bypoll was postponed.

Stalin said the details of the seizure were given to the Election Commission by the IT department. The poll body wrote to the Chennai Police Commissioner to register a case.

An FIR was registered only on the orders of the Madras High Court and after securing the permission of the Magistrate. The FIR did not contain the names Vijayabaskar, Palaniswami and other state ministers.

The DMK candidate N. Marudhu Ganesh and two others had filed a case to transfer the probe to CBI in 2017.

Stalin alleged that the state government had concealed from the single judge the fact that the FIR was registered after Magistrate’s permission and also a case is pending with the division bench.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss said the quashing of the FIR is nothing but murder of justice and shows that the government can blindfold of judiciary and bury any case.

Ramadoss also demanded that the probe be handed over to the CBI.

Women Directors Gauri Shinde, Leena Yadav & Meghna Gulzar Discuss Gender Equality & Women-Centric Stories
Women directors in Indian Cinema, saw some of the most prolific filmmakers in India, Gauri Shinde, Leena Yadav & Meghna Gulzar engage in a conversation on gender equality, women-centric stories & their journey in the film industry, moderated exceptionally well by filmmaker Shashank Khaitan.
Usually a good male director is a “genius”, “has an eye for detail” & “knows what he wants”, but his female counterpart is usually perceived to be “finicky”, “too rigid” & “too authoritative”. When asked if this perception has changed, Meghna Gulzar quipped, “I hope not. We are finicky, we are detail-oriented. We like it like that way. That’s what shows in our work & that’s what you as an audience like.” Meghna Gulzar, the daughter of noted lyricist Gulzar, directed her 1st ever film Filhaal that dealt with surrogacy, in the year 2002 and followed it with films like Just Married, Talvar & Raazi.
Gauri Shinde’s film English Vinglish when looked in isolation is about a great character. But when looked through the lens of gender, it becomes a strong “female character” who breaks through after being subdued in society. When asked if she was subjected to questions surrounding gender & feminism a bit more, because of this, Gauri said, “I had never thought that a film about a middle class women & her middle class life could touch people’s hearts. I used to be offended with words like “female director” & “female protagonist” but after some time I learnt that I want to be proud of it. If this is what someone wants to call it, why not? I want to tell stories about women that are not told so often.”
Narrating her ordeal of entering the film industry, Leena Yadav said, “I had a lot of people refuse to work with me because I am a woman. I experienced harsh discrimination but I stopped working with such people. I have had a great journey from there on. But I experienced the existence of this recently when my 1stever assistant director called up a potential second assistant to hire him. The candidate said that working with a woman director will look good on his CV & followed it up by asking, “Does she know anything or do we have to do everything?”
What does the commercial failure of the 1st ever film do to the filmmaker mentally & to the prospects of the next film? Leena Yadav, whose 1st ever film, Shabd wasn’t received well at the box office turnstiles, said, “Post the release, I got an instant PhD into the politics of our film industry. It was heartbreaking; I had never experienced anything like it. I couldn’t function normally for about 6 months. It was like standing naked in the middle of the street & being whipped by everyone from everywhere. I then focused all my energies into writing. I wrote my next film which I thought nobody is going to do but I got to make my film. I think that’s what the journey is. They say, the 1st ever film is the toughest, but the truth is that it only starts getting tougher.”

While speaking about her film Parched, Leena Yadav said, “When Parched was travelling at the film festivals worldwide & winning accolades, a common question that people there asked was, “Are people in India going to see the same film as the international audiences?” When we were called by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), we realized that they were slightly on the backfoot because of the awards that the film had bagged internationally. They told us that the film would be given an “A” rating, which we were fine with. Then they pointed at the chest area and said that “it” will have to be blurred, referring to the scenes involving frontal nudity. I asked them, “It what? Breasts?” The panel members jumped in shock at my utterance of the word. It is sad that in a country that gave the world Kamasutra, we are hesitant to talk about sex, because well you know, children in India are found in temples & sex has nothing to do with it.”
In a society that is still trying to understand & be comfortable with gender equality, it is quite possible that women directors may be treated or looked at differently by big stars? When asked about if they ever experienced this, all 3 of them answered in a negative fashion, thereby dismissing the notion. Meghna Gulzar said, “All actors will always test you to see how much you know about your craft. It is about winning their confidence. It has got nothing to do with gender.” Leena Yadav while agreeing with the thought, added, “All the actors that I have worked with, they know that I know their characters better than them. I have never had any issues. Working with Amitabh Bachchan & Ben Kingsley (on Teen Patti) was amazing.”
