Indonesian tsunami rescue efforts continue as country marks 2004 disaster

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Array

Nasheman News : Indonesian authorities on Wednesday resumed the search for 154 people missing after a tsunami hit the Sunda Strait coasts as the country commemorates the anniversary of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that killed around 230,000 people.

According to the latest official figures, which authorities say could increase, the death toll has reached at least 429, with more than 1,500 injured and some 16,000 displaced.

The rain continues to hamper rescue work on the fourth day of searching the ruins of collapsed buildings, vehicles and thick vegetation, reports Efe.

Experts believe the giant waves were caused by the collapse of part of Anak Krakatau volcano after it erupted in the Sunda Strait.

Fear of a new tsunami caused by the volcano’s continued activity has led officials to warn residents to avoid the coasts.

On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of people fled to high ground in Java’s Sumur district during a new Anak Krakatau explosion.

Indonesia on Wednesday also commemorates the 167,799 people who lost their lives in the country in 2004 as a result of the December 26 Boxing Day tsunami caused by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off the northern coast of Sumatra. The disaster also caused deaths in a dozen other nations around the Indian Ocean, killing around 230,000 people in total.

Various events will take place Wednesday night in the Sumatran province of Aceh, the hardest hit by the natural disaster, under the slogan “Build together, stay alert,” chosen for the 14th anniversary.

Indonesia is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken every year by some 7,000 earthquakes, most of them moderate.

Syria’s air defences intercept Israeli missiles over Damascus

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The Syrian air defences were triggered on Tuesday evening to a heavy Israeli missile attack that targeted areas in the countryside of the capital Damascus, media reported.

The Israeli attack was carried out from inside the Lebanese airspace, said the state TV, adding that the air defences have intercepted a number of missiles, some of which were intercepted while over Lebanon.

The residents in Damascus heard a series of explosions in the capital and saw the flaring air defence missiles chasing targets in the sky, Xinhua news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Lebanese reports said Israeli warplanes infiltrated the Lebanese airspace on Tuesday evening at the time of the attack.

The official media outlets haven’t given details about the targeted sites, but said the air defences were responding to the attack over the western countryside of Damascus.

For its side, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said that the Israeli missile attack targeted areas in the western and southwestern countryside of Damascus.

It said a number of missiles hit three targets, which it claimed are weapon depots that belong to the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

The Israeli attack is the latest in a string of missiles strikes targeting Syrian positions throughout the crisis over the pretext that they are targeting positions of Iranian-backed forces and allied Hezbollah fighters.

The last attack was late last month and targeted military positions in the town of Kisweh in the western countryside of Damascus.

In September, Moscow equipped Damascus with the S-300 air defence missile system, but local reports said that this advanced system hasn’t been used yet.

Banks on nationwide strike on Wednesday, services likely to be affected

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :Services of banks are likely to be affected on Wednesday due to a nationwide strike call given by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to protest against bank mergers and pay revision.

The strike is likely to affect the country’s banking sector. It has been called to oppose the amalgamation of Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank by the consortium of nine unions in the banking sector which includes the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW).

“10 lakh bank employees and officers of the 21 public sector banks, old generation private banks and foreign banks under the banner of the UFBU will join the one-day strike on December 26 against merger of public sector banks and wage revision of bank employees,” NOBW Vice President Ashwani Rana was quoted as saying in a statement issued on Tuesday.

On wages, the unions are demanding a hike of 25 per cent, increment for all bank employees under scale 1 to 7 (instead of the IBA’s offer to only those employees in junior scale of 1 to 3) and rejection of the proposal to introduce variable pay.

Though wage revision in state-run banks happens every five years, it may be difficult for them to raise wages substantially as high NPAs and losses have hurt the sector.

“Bank employees wage revision is due since November 1, 2017. So far the IBA (Indian Banks’ Association) has offered 8 per cent wage hike which is not acceptable to the United Forum of Bank Unions,” he said.

According to Rana, the Additional Labour Commissioner had called a conciliation meeting on December 20 to wade off the strike.

“The United Forum of Bank Unions served a strike notice to the Indian Bank Association and the MDs of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank on merger of these banks. Since there was no assurance by the IBA on stopping the merger of these three banks and fresh offer on wage revision, the UFBU decided to go ahead with the strike on December 26,” Ranan said.

UNREGULATED INTERNET POSES RISK TO CHILDREN. PARENTS BEWARE

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Image result for UNREGULATED INTERNET POSES RISK TO CHILDREN. PARENTS BEWARE.

Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote to the Honourable Minister for Law & Justice, Electronics & Information Technology, Sh. R S Prasad urging his intervention to curb the growing digital sexual abuse of children as well as to regulate and shut down Mobile apps which threatens the safety of children.

Quoting a media report , Chandrasekhar said “There is an exponential growth in a few short video mobile apps due to their simple-to-navigate interface, and free availability on Google Play or App Store. Apps such as Kwai, Clip, TikTok, NewsDog, LiveMe and Helo, which threatens the safety of children are easily accessible and are becoming a new breeding ground for ‘grooming’ underage children for child pornography.”

“According to INTERPOL, around 2.4 million instances of online child sexual abuse were reported from India in 2017. US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also reported that over 24.46 lakh children were abused in 2017 in India. These are just the reported cases, there could be many that go unreported.” Rajeev said.

“Such Apps have a high demand from vernacular entertainment consumers in different states in India. The abusers try to contact children using these vernacular languages. With easy availability of internet and smart phones, there has been a surge in cases of child sexual abuse, harassment, bullying and blackmail where the perpetrator finds his victim on one of the available social video apps.” Chandrasekhar said.

MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar shared his recommendation on steps which could be taken and urged the Ministry to add and modify as they deemed necessary: –

  1. Create a permanent institutional framework to monitor and regulate online content that falls under the category of Digital Exploitation of Children. A suggested institutional framework could be a permanent inter-ministerial group consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Women and Child Development and Law and IT to arrive at a technology-based solution to the problems of Digital Child Abuse.
  1. To immediately initiate extensive consultations, awareness programmes. with all stakeholders and draft well-crafted roles for each group — including ISPs, the police, parents, schools etc.
  1. Review and amend the IT Act, 2000 to provide strict penalties to intermediaries who facilitate such content and strengthen legal framework including Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act.
  1. Ban such mobile applications which do not curate the inappropriate content involving children.
  1. Direct intermediaries such as Google and Apple to take strict measures for removing/banning such apps from GooglePlay and AppStore which allow exchange of child pornographic images/videos and enable paedophiles to “groom” the children.
  1. Formulate a dedicated legal framework where specific guidelines regulate mobile applications which makes viewing and sharing of sexually explicit images/videos of children a punishable offence.
  1. Review and amend POCSO Act ,2012 to make Digital Child Abuse and Online Child Grooming a punishable offence.

“Children constitute 44.4% of India’s current population and are the future of our nation. It is our responsibility to ensure that they get a safe and happy childhood that they deserve. This issue requires serious attention. Regrettably, your ministry has done very little so far on this issue. I hope you and your ministry will take strict action to prevent Digital Child Abuse in India.” MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote in his letter.

The internet, if not regulated and monitored can make it a biggest threat to parents who are deeply concerned about the safety of their Children. The Government must involve with parents and schools in mission mode to ensure that Digital India is also an India free of sexual exploitation” Chandrasekhar concluded.
