Mumbai Congress protests outside CBI office

October 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Thousands of Congress activists on Friday staged a noisy protest outside the CBI office in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) here, shouting anti-government slogans following the move to strip CBI Director Alok Verma of his powers.

Led by party chief Sanjay Nirupam, senior leaders including several former Ministers and ex-MPs like Eknath Gaikwad and Priya Dutt and thousands of workers joined the demonstrations carrying placards and banners with anti-BJP slogans.

Slogans of “Modi se CBI Bachao”, “Chehre pe jo laali hai, Rafale ki dalali hai” and “Chor hai, Chor hai, Narendra Modi Chor hai” rent the air outside the CBI city headquarters.

“We are opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s disgraceful and unconstitutional attempt to block the investigations into the Rafale scam by removing the CBI Director Alok Verma,” Nirupam said.

Nirupam said that the Modi government had not spared a single institution and undermined the integrity of all critical organisations including the CBI.

Besides Mumbai, the Maharashtra Congress also organised similar demonstrations in Pune and Nagpur outside the CBI offices there as part of nationwide protests.

Rahul Gandhi refuses comment on CVC probe against CBI Director

October 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday refused to comment on the Supreme Court order on an inquiry into the allegations against CBI Director Alok Verma by the CVC, saying it was a “process being carried out”.

“It’s a Supreme Court judgement, a process that is being carried out. I don’t want to comment on it,” Gandhi told reporters outside the Lodhi Road police station where he was briefly detained for leading a protest outside the CBI headquarters.

“But I will say that the Prime Minister acted against the Director of the CBI as a result of panic, as a result of fear, because he has helped Mr Anil Ambani with Rs 30,000 crore,” he said.

The Supreme Court earlier in the day appointed one of its former judges, Justice A.K. Patnaik, to supervise the inquiry into the allegations against Verma while giving two weeks time to the CVC to complete the probe.

Hindi Film Review

October 26, 2018 by Shaheen Raaj

Badhai Ho

Badhaai Ho Is Laugh Riot & A Complete Family Entertainer
Banner: Junglee Pictures & Chrome Pictures
Producers: Vineet Jain, Aleya Sen, Hemant Bhandari, Amit Ravindernath Sharma, Sushil Chaudhary & Priti Shahni
Director: Amit Ravindernath Sharma
Star Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta, Sheeba Chaddha, Surekha Sikri, Shardul Rana, Rahul Tiwari, Alka Amin, Alka Badola & Arun Kalra
Music: Tanishq Bagchi, Rochak Kohli, Jam8 & Abhishek Arora
Since the time Ayushmann Khurrana debuted in the year 2012 with Vicky Donor, he has become the poster boy of films which were unconventional, taboo & yet attracted moviegoers in hordes. While his 1st ever film talked about sperm donation, his last year’s sleeper hit Shubh Mangal Saavdhan dealt with erectile dysfunction. Now he’s back with yet another film on similar lines, Badhaai Ho.
Badhaai Ho is the story of a family that faces an unusual situation. Nakul Kaushik (Ayushmann Khurrana) resides in Delhi with his family comprising of his father Jeetender aka Jeetu (Gajraj Rao), mother Priyamvada (Neena Gupta), grandmother (Surekha Sikri) & younger brother Gullar (Shardul Rana). Nakul Kaushik is in a steady relationship with his colleague, Reene (Sanya Malhotra). 1 day Jeetu & Priyamvada get intimate when they are reading the poem written by Jeetu that is published in a magazine. 19 weeks later, Priyamvada falls ill & the doctors inform that she is pregnant. For Nakul Kaushik & Gullar, the world comes crashing down. Priyamvada is told that if she wants to abort, she should do so within the next 3 to 4 days. But she doesn’t feel like aborting & decides to go ahead with the pregnancy. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.
Akshat Ghildial & Shantanu Srivastava’s story is very simple & relatable. It’s surprising that nobody made a film with this subject as the principle plot & the writers treat it well. Akshat Ghildial’s screenplay is a bit subtle. This goes against the film in a few scenes but still manages to click. Every situation in the film seems straight out of life & there’s nothing that’s over the top. Akshat Ghildial’s dialogues are very witty & funny and would be loved, as again, they will resonate with the audiences.
Amit Sharma’s direction is decent but he falters in the 1st ever half. Also he should have treated the romantic portions well. The track of Nakul kaushik & Reene is weak and it’s the older couple & Dadi who takes the cake. But on the positive side, Amit Sharma brings out the emotions very well in a lot of sequences. The film has quite a few subplots & the sequence of Nakul Kaushik going to Gullar’s school to teach a bully might seem unwarranted. But it is important as it helps in explaining how different generations react to such kind of development in their lives.
Badhaai Ho might seem like a laugh a minute riot from the promos but it’s not. The funny moments are definitely there but the film also has its share of emotional & touching moments. Hence, keep your expectations right & you’ll surely enjoy the fare. The film’s beginning & introduction of the characters is a bit shaky. The film picks up only when the Kaushik couple announces about the “good news” to Nakul Kaushik & Gullar. The reaction of Dadi at this juncture will surely be loved. The film again falls a bit & the intermission point makes it seem like an art house film. But it’s in the 2nd half where the film shines the most. The outburst of Dadi in Meerut is clap worthy. Nakul Kaushik’s reaction when his parents return from Meerut is priceless. Another scene that stands out is Nakul Kaushik apologizing to Reene’s mother (Sheeba Chadha). The finale however is the best part of the film & would surely make viewers teary eyed.
Talking of music, “Badhaaiyan Tenu” is the best of the lot & is very catchy. “Sajan Bade Senti” is average but it is presented very well. “Nain Na Jodeen” is touching but the impact is limited as the romantic track is not that strong. “Morni Banke” appears during the end credits & is okay. Abhishek Arora’s background score however is entertaining & has a naughty vibe which suits the film.
Sanu John Verughese’s cinematography is appropriate. Ratheesh UK’s production design is straight out of life. The house of the Kaushik’s looks authentic. Kirti Kolwankar & Maria Tharakan’s costumes are appealing especially the ones worn by the lead couple. Dev Rao Jadhav’s editing could have been crisper at a few places.
Performance wise Ayushmann Khurrana delivers a brilliant performance & his act is spot on. Whether it is the scenes where he’s acting rude or when he gets drunk & creates a ruckus…he is first rate. In the scene where he apologies to Reene’s mother, he’ll win a lot of hearts. Sanya Malhotra is quite decent but has limited screen time. Neena Gupta is the soul of the film & puts up a very convincing & lovable performance. In several scenes, she expresses so well with her eyes & silences. Gajraj Rao is in top form & steals the show in several scenes. He is like the 2nd hero of the film & fulfills the responsibility ably. Surekha Sikri is out of this world & her scenes are sure to induce claps & whistles. Shardul Rana gives a wonderful performance & his scene with Ayushmann Khurrana in the 2nd half is note worthy. Sheeba Chaddha leaves a tremendous impact in a small role. She also communicates a lot through her silences. While the others are fine!
On the whole: Badhaai Ho is not a laugh riot but emerges as a complete family entertainer with emotions as its USP. The film leaves you with a smile.
Tail Piece: At the box office, it is at an advantage. It has been released during an extended weekend & and th families are bound to come in large numbers. It is surely a “Badhaai Ho” time for the makers & the investors!

BJP’s comeback on Rahul Gandhi over Rafale row

October 26, 2018 by Nasheman

The BJP on Thursday hit back at Congress President Rahul Gandhi accusing him of “spreading falsehood” over the issue of CBI Director Alok Verma and said that he was living in “hallucination”.

“Congress has lost all hopes of becoming relevant and it has also lost patience. And therefore in their dreams also they are dreaming only about Rafale. It appears Rahulji is living in hallucination,” HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters at the party headquarters.

“He is manufacturing lies on Rafale everyday. Today he came out with two falsehoods. The first falsehood is that the CBI Director was removed but the fact is that he was not removed. He has been sent on leave. No 1 (Verma) and No 2 (Special Director Rakesh Asthana) have been sent on leave,” he said.

The second falsehood was that “Verma was sent on leave because he was inquiring about Rafale”. “There is no inquiry. There is no case of inquiry on Rafale. He (Gandhi) says that papers were taken from his office. This is utterly fallacious, malicious and a manufactured lie,” he said.

The BJP leader’s remarks came soon after the Congress President sharpened his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying Verma was “removed in panic” midnight because he was going to begin a probe into the controversial Rafale deal that would have been “suicidal” for Modi.

Slamming the Congress, Javadekar said, “Why they are doing this? Because Congress and Gandhi think that he has lost a chance to pocket the heavy commission through his friend Sanjay Bhandari if he was the middleman.”

He said people were more mature than Rahul Gandhi. “He (Gandhi) lives in hallucination. The country has not witnessed such an immature politician. He failed in his two-minute press conference today on matter, on manner and on method,” he said.

Javadekar said Gandhi has lost civility and therefore he was “cursing” the Prime Minister day in and day out.

Accusing the Congress of having misused the CBI when it was in power, Javadekar said, “Who misused the CBI. We never interfered. Actually people are accusing us now that why we did not interfere in time. There was anarchy-like situation developing and we should have interfered earlier. But we never interfered.”

He said that even after finding out that a ‘Look Out’ circular, which was being issued to Karti Chidambaram, was leaked and even after the Aircel Maxis deal case report was found in the bedroom of erstwhile finance Minister P. Chidambaram the government had not interfered.

“The coal scam accused had easy access to the then CBI Director (Ranjit Sinha) and the case is in court. Moin Qureshi was the go between as always. And there are many cases which show tremendous interference when they used, misused and abused the CBI,” he added.

#TheyToo: Bengaluru pourakarmikas allege sexual harassment by BBMP officials

October 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Officials at BBMP are taking undue advantage of the fact that these women are illiterates and don’t have the guts to raise their voice, says a FB post.

After actors and journalists, the #MeToo wave seems to have reached the pourakarmikas, the civic workers who keep Bengaluru’s streets clean. An anonymous Facebook post carrying the hashtag ‘#TheyToo’ claimed that her mother-in-law and many others in BBMP have been sexually harassed by officials.

The post, which is in Kannada said, “Sexual harassment is not just limited to sandalwood stars and the rich but also the poor like pourakarmikas. My mother-in-law and other women like her who work with the BBMP as pourakarmikas have to face sexual harassment almost every day,” said the post.

It also alleged that BBMP officials take undue advantage of the fact that these women are illiterate and do not question authority. Officials threaten to mark them absent if anyone dares complain about them, says the post.

Claiming that her mother-in-law might lose her job if her name is revealed, the anonymous post says that, these officials need to be punished and the BBMP should take some steps against this.

However, it must be noted that a few months ago all the pourakarmikas had protested at the BBMP headquarters after no action was taken against the KR Puram contractor Nagesh who was accused of sexual harassment.

Even after a complaint was registered at the KR Puram Police Station and the BBMP Sexual Harassment Committee not to mention the Guttige Pourakarmika Sangha intimating the Karnataka Social Welfare Department BBMP, all they got were promises from the then mayor Sampath Raj to blacklist him. Everyone is still in the dark about the proceedings.

“Unfortunately, it’s a shame that the BBMP has let down all the women who mustered the courage and complained. We were shocked to know that one of the accused was just transferred from the K R Puram ward to another ward,” said Committee Member of BBMP Guttige Pourakarmika Sangha Maitreyi Krisnan.

When asked, 39-year-old Jayamma (name changed), a pourakarmika working in Puttenahalli ward said, “I can vouch for at least five women who are being harassed every single day by these BBMP officials.”
The Sangha demanded that the BBMP implement the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, in letter and in spirit and conduct an enquiry into the complaints filed.

Sabarimala protests : 1,400 arrested across Kerala

October 26, 2018 by Nasheman

A day after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting with senior police officials in Thiruvananthapuram. Authorities on Thursday launched a crackdown on protesters who prevented women in the 10-50 age group from entering the Sabarimala temple.

Police have arrested over 1,400 people across the state, registering 258 cases against 2,000 people for defying an order of the Supreme Court that had allowed women of all ages to visit the temple.

The police arrested people from Pathanamthitta – the district where the temple is located, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Ernakulam and elsewhere.

The arrests came after Vijayan chaired a high-level meeting yesterday. The arrests had become a certainty after the police first released pictures of over 200 people who they thought were responsible for attacking the police, media and pilgrims.

The Supreme Court had on September 28 overturned a centuries-old practice that barred women of menstrual age (10-50 years) from entering the hill temple, where a celibate deity Lord Ayyappa is worshipped.

On October 17, the temple opened at 5 p.m for the monthly pujas which ended on October 22. Protesters ensured that no female in the 10-50 age could make it to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Kerala BJP President P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said that he would soon approach the High Court against the police action against the devotees.

“What’s happening now is false cases are being registered against the devotees who stood to protect the traditions of the temple. This is done purposely by the CPI-M to finish off this famed temple,” said Pillai.

Senior BJP leader and spokesperson A.N. Radhakrishnan said that they won’t be cowed down by the cases foisted on the devotees, and will take out a march to the Pathanamthitta police station on Friday.
