Adobe, Microsoft and SAP announce Open Data Initiative

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

In an effort to empower companies to derive more value from their data and deliver better customer experiences, Adobe, Microsoft and SAP have introduced the Open Data Initiative (ODI).

Announced at the “Microsoft Ignite” conference here late on Monday, the initiative will enhance data exchange between the applications and platforms offered by the three companies.

“Together with Adobe and SAP, we are taking a first, critical step to helping companies achieve a level of customer and business understanding that has never before been possible,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“Organisations everywhere have a massive opportunity to build AI-powered digital feedback loops for predictive power, automated workflows and, ultimately, improved business outcomes,” he added.

Companies around the world use software and services from Adobe, Microsoft and SAP to run product development, operations, finance, marketing, sales, human resources and more.

The core focus of the Open Data Initiative is to eliminate data silos and enable a single view of the customer, helping companies to better govern their data and support privacy and security initiatives.

“Adobe, Microsoft and SAP are partnering to reimagine the customer experience management category,” said Shantanu Narayen, CEO, Adobe.

“Together, we will give enterprises the ability to harness and action massive volumes of customer data to deliver personalised, real-time customer experiences at scale,” he added.

According to Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, the three companies understand that the customer experience is no longer a sales management conversation.

With the open data initiative, we will help businesses run with a true single view of the customer,” said McDermott.

Patna doctors’ strike enters 2nd day, 12 patients dead

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A strike called by junior doctors of a hospital here entered the second day on Tuesday even as 12 patients died in the last 24 hours, officials said.

The doctors from the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) began their strike on Monday after one of their colleagues was assaulted by family members of a patient.

“Doctors are not attending patients in wards as they continued to stay off duty. Patients are now being looked after by nurses and para-medical staff,” an official said.

The protesting doctors have demanded a security cover during duty hours and action against misbehaving patients’ families.

The doctors have said that they would not end their strike on mere assurances by the state government.

The strike has left hundreds of patients, many of them in a serious condition, in trouble.

Kavanaugh denies sexual misconduct in TV interview

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

US President Donald Trump’S Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh repeatedly denied accusations of sexual misconduct that have threatened to derail his confirmation in an exclusive interview with Fox News.

“What I know is the truth, and the truth is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone,” Kavanaugh said in the interview on Monday night.

Kavanaugh’s wife, Ashley, said the allegations against her husband were “hard to believe”.

“I know Brett. I’ve known him for 17 years… He’s decent, he’s kind, he’s good. I know his heart. This is not consistent with Brett,” she said.

California professor Christine Blasey Ford has accused Kavanaugh of covering her mouth and trying to remove her clothing at a party in the early 1980s, when both were in high school.

Kavanaugh and Ford are set to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

In the interview, Kavanaugh emphatically denied Ford’s claim against him, saying that he was “never at any such party”.

Kavanaugh added that he was “not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone”.

He also denied a New Yorker report published on Sunday night in which classmate Deborah Ramirez said he exposed himself to her while they were students at Yale.

“I never did any such thing,” Kavanaugh told Fox News.

“The other people alleged to be there don’t recall any such thing. If such a thing had happened, it would have been the talk of campus.”

Top Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have slammed what they described as a “smear campaign” orchestrated in part by Democrats.

Trump has also repeatedly defended his nominee against sexual misconduct accusations, which he has called “totally political” and “one of the single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate for anything”.

Kavanaugh said in the interview that Trump had called him on Monday afternoon to say “he’s standing by me” and said he was confident that will remain the case.

Woman shot dead in US city

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A woman was shot dead in the US city of Boston, leading to an extensive manhunt for her estranged husband who had allegedly chased her in a motor vehicle before the deadly attack.

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz identified Allen Warner, 47, the woman’s “soon to be ex-husband”, as a person of interest in the shooting which took place on Monday evening on Main Street in Marshfield, reports The Boston Globe daily.

Warner is “considered armed and dangerous”, Cruz told the media on Monday night.

Cruz asked for the public’s help in finding Warner, who the police believe was driving a gray 2013 Toyota Corolla with a Massachusetts license plate.

The woman, believed to be in her late 30s, was taken to South Shore Hospital with a gunshot wound, where she was pronounced dead.

No weapons were recovered at the scene, authorities said.

YouTube sensation Lilly Singh tells UN to empower youth

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

At the UN where often aging politicians and diplomats hold forth on global issues, for a change young YouTube sensation Lilly Singh took the stage to remind them that the future belonged to the youth and they have the key to solving the world’s problem.

When investments are made in educating the youth, “they become the beacon of light the world needs”, Singh, who is also the Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, told the audience of world leaders and youth at the high-level Youth2030 event on Monday.

Singh, who is a Canadian of Indian descent, has over 11 million followers on YouTube, has authored the bestseller, “How To Be A Bawse”, has a role in HBO’s film adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451” and tops the Forbes Magazine Top Influencers List in the entertainment category.

The event saw the launch of the UN Youth Strategy of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Singh said that the world was moving so fast that the platform that brought her fame, YouTube, did not exist 30 years ago.

As someone who did not face poverty, conflict or displacement and found success, she said that when she compared herself to other young people, “I practically feel I won the lottery.”

All young people should have access to education and technology, she said.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim recalled that the watchwords of the rebellious youth of the 1960s and 1970s were “Don’t trust anyone over 30”.

“Don’t trust us,” he said, on education spending or climate change. “Make the decision for the world you want to live in.”

Guterres said that through Youth2030 — the UN’s strategy is to engage with and empower young people — “I want the UN to become a leader in working with young people: in understanding their needs, in helping to put their ideas into action, in ensuring their views inform our processes.”

He said: “Too often, young people are excluded by development programmes; ignored in peace negotiations; denied a voice and a seat at the table. At the same time, young people are a vast source of innovation, ideas and solutions.”

It will “open new routes to engage and involve young people, and amplify their voices,” he added.

UN:Sushma discusses strategic cooperation, trade, development at bilaterals

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met nine leaders from across the globe in a whirlwind of bilateral interactions and spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summity.

She began her day on Monday by attending the high-level event on counter-narcotics convened by US President Donald Trump, where she was seated at the front row.

India is one of 129 countries that have signed the pledge drafted by Trump on commitment towards international fight against drugs.

Although it was not a formal meeting, she greeted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when she came to the UN, India’s Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

Sushma Swaraj met the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, Mongolia, Nepal, Morocco, Lichtenstein and Federica Mogherini, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

The topics discussed during the meetings with the foreign ministers depended on the relations with those countries and ranged from strategic cooperation to trade and investment.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale participated in the Special Meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) — a 26-member forum for cooperation in promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

Ruchi Ghanashyam, the Secretary (West), spoke at the Africa Adaptation Initiative High-Level Roundtable. The organisation aims at facilitating finance and cooperation for the continent’s development.

After Sushma Swaraj’s meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar tweeted: “Strategic partnership gaining momentum!”

The two countries have been building up their strategic relations reinforced by the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue that includes the US and Japan.

Closer to home was the meeting with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, which “took stock of our bilateral relationship”, Kumar tweeted.

At the meeting with Ecuador Foreign Minister Jose Valencia Amores, there were “good discussion on ways to further consolidate bilateral relationship in the areas of trade, agriculture, pharma, IT and capacity building”, according to Kumar.

Also from Latin America, Colombia’s Foreign Minister, the discussions centred on cooperation on trade investment, pharma, mining, petroleum and capacity building, he tweeted.

With Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, Sushma Swaraj “explored ways to intensify ties in investment, renewable energy, water treatment, tourism and their contribution to our flagship initiatives”, according to Kumar.

Mogherini and Sushma Swaraj “discussed issues related to trade and investment and exchanged views on the regional and global issues,” Kumar said in a tweet.

He noted that India and the EU were bound by a “strategic partnership based on common values of democracy, freedom and rule of law.”

“Celebrating the 25th anniversary of our diplomatic relations” Sushma Swaraj and Lichtenstein Foreign Minister Aurelia Frick “exchanged views on enhancing bilateral relations in trade and investment, particularly through participation at Indian trade fairs and tourism,” Kumar tweeted.

On relations with Morocco, he noted that they stretched back to the time of Ibn Battuta, the 14th century explorer, and tweeted that Sushma Swaraj and “Morocco Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita discussed strengthening cooperation in areas of commerce, pharma, cyber security, defence and culture”.

She also met with Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar.

The High-Level General Assembly session begins on Tuesday.

On the sidelines, she was to meet Fiji Prime Minister J.V. Bainimarama and the Foreign Ministers of Iraq, Cyprus, Moldova and Estonia.

Bill Cosby faces 5-10 years in jail for sexual assault

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Comedian Bill Cosby, who was earlier facing up to 30 years behind bars, will now face a maximum of 10 years after his three counts of his conviction were merged into one.

Prosecutors asked a US court on Monday to sentence Cosby to 5-10 years for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand, saying he had shown “no remorse” for his actions, media reported.

“This is about a person who put himself in a situation of being a mentor, but we know he had other intentions just from the beginning,” District Attorney Kevin Steele said on the first day of a hearing that would determine how severely the disgraced actor sould be punished.

“We know that from the statements he made. What he saw in Andrea the first time he laid eyes on her. What his plan was. To get to the point they were going to get to. And that didn’t involve consent.”

Cosby, the first high-profile American celebrity to be convicted in the #MeToo era, should be locked up for as long as a decade and be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, prosecutors said.

However, Cosby’s defence attorney, Joseph P. Green, asked for a sentence of house arrest, citing Cosby’s advanced age and blindness.

“Cosby is not dangerous,” he said. “Eighty-one-year-old blind men who are not self-sufficient are not a danger, unless perhaps to themselves.”

The sentence was expected to come on Tuesday after Judge Steven T. O’Neill decides whether Cosby should be required to register himself with state police and submit to sex-offender counselling and notification for life.

Cosby was convicted in April of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and assaulting Constand at his home in 2004.

Judge O’Neill announced that the charges had been merged into one because they all stem from the same event.

Monday’s hearing also featured victim impact statements from Constand, her parents and her sister.

A prosecution expert said Cosby should be labelled a “sexually violent predator” because he has a mental disorder that involves urges toward non-consenting women.

Cosby has declined to participate in any evaluation on his mental state to decide whether he was sexually violent predator.

Dr Rajkumar kidnap case: court acquits all accused

September 25, 2018 by Nasheman

A local court in Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday acquitted all nine accused in the sensational abduction case of Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajkumar by forest brigand Veerappan in July 2000.

Additional district judge K Mani, while acquitting all the nine accused, tore into the prosecution for not presenting a watertight case.

The judge also criticised Dr Rajkumar’s family for not coming forward to file a complaint against the people who abducted the Kannada icon.

The judge also said the prosecution failed to provide even an iota of evidence to prove that the accused were connected to Veerappan and his aide Sethukuzhi Govinda.
