J&K Police denies resignations by policemen

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday denied reports of resignations by policemen in the aftermath of the abduction and killing of three policemen in Shopian district.

A police statement said that the videos uploaded on the social media showing special police officers (SPOs) claiming to have quit were motivated.

“Services of SPOs are reviewed from time to time and based on these reviews some SPOs are disengaged. The videos uploaded on the social media are motivated,” the statement said.

“There have been no resignations by policemen after the killings of three SPOs by the terrorists,” it said.

But the Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued an advisory to all policemen on leave in south Kashmir to report for duty immediately.

The advisory also directs policemen not to visit their homes till further orders.

US welcomes India, Pakistan foreign ministers’ meeting

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

The US has welcomed as “terrific news”, India’s acceptance of Pakistan’s offer of a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two neighbours on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York later this month.

Reacting to the development on Thursday, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert in a press briefing said: “We saw that. I think that’s terrific news for the Indians and Pakistanis to be able to sit down and have a conversation together.”

The thaw came in the wake of a letter by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in which he had sought a meeting between foreign ministers Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the UNGA.

“We saw the reports about the positive messages being exchanged between Prime Minister Khan and also Prime Minister Modi… We hope that the conditions will be set for a good, strong bilateral relationship in the future,” Nauert said.

The Indian government had said that the two leaders will meet at a mutually convenient date and time. But, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar made it clear that “the coming meeting was not resumption of the dialogue process”.

Delhi government to give Rs 1 cr to slain BSF trooper’s family

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that Rs 1 crore would be given to the family of a BSF trooper who was killed by Pakistani forces on the International Border near Jammu.

Kejriwal made the announcement after visiting Narendra Singh’s family in Haryana’s Sonipat along with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s state unit chief Naveen Jaihind.

“For the martyred soldier of Haryana, the Delhi government will bring the case under a special provision in its cabinet meeting and provide the family with a financial aid of Rs 1 crore,” a Delhi government official said.

After meeting the family, Kejriwal slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Modi for their failure in acting against the unlawful activities of Pakistan.

“Before becoming the Prime Minister, Modi ji used to talk about giving a befitting reply to such attacks instead of writing ‘love letters’. Give a reply now… It is not the time to stay mum,” Kejriwal told the the media.

“You go to Pakistan to cut a cake (meeting with former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2015). But cake cutting is not going to stop the attacks on our soldiers. You had said that you will take strict action against Pakistan, so do it now,” he added.

Asked if India should continue playing cricket with Pakistan, Kejriwal replied: “Not playing cricket with Pakistan is not going to stop the murders, it is the Prime Minister’s action that could help.”

On the reports of Surgical Strike Day being celebrated on September 29, Kejriwal, on his Twitter account said that the “best way to celebrate surgical strike day would be for the PM to visit the family of Narendra Singh, who was tortured and slain by Pak this week.

“PM should assure the nation that Pakistan would be given such befitting reply that it won’t dare do it again,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

The mutilated body of Singh, the Border Security Force’s (BSF) Head constable, was found on Tuesday hours after Pakistani forces had resorted to unprovoked firing in Ramgarh sector of Jammu.

Cop refused to meet MLA; transfer order gets revoked after long wait

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Even after a number of court directions, political interference has not stopped in the functioning and the administration of the police department. The best example for this is the high drama that prevailed in Mysuru, on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the state government issued an order transferring DCP Kavita from Mysuru Intelligence wing to the post of DCP (crime and traffic) Mysuru. However, to her dismay she was made to wait till 9.30 pm the next day to take charge and then in a shocking turn of events, she later learnt that her order was revoked.

All of this scene unfurled reportedly because the tough cop refused to meet KR Nagar MLA and Kodagu district in-charge Minister SaRa Mahesh before assuming her new charge.

Kavitha had arrived early in the morning to report to the new post. However, she was kept waiting.
If sources in the police department are to be believed, few senior officers reportedly asked her to meet the Mahesh, but she didn’t oblige stating that as per the transfer rules, she need not meet anyone.
Even though City Police Commissioner AS Subramanyeshwara Rao is considered as the tough officer he was the mute spectator to the whole drama, it is said.

At about 11 pm, the drama came to an end as CM HD Kumaraswamy cancelled her transfer order and retained her in the intelligence wing.

Varsities directed to celebrate ‘Surgical Strike Day’ on Sep 29 by UGC

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday directed varsities and higher education institutions across the country to observe September 29 as “Surgical Strike Day”.

Talk-sessions by ex-servicemen about sacrifices by the armed forces, special parades, visiting exhibitions and sending greeting cards to pledge their support for armed forces, are among the activities prescribed by the commission for the celebrations.

“The NCC units of all universities should organise a special parade on September 29 after which the NCC commander shall address them on the modalities of protection of the borders. The varsities may organise a talk-session calling ex-serviceman to sensitise students about sacrifices made by the armed forces,” the UGC said in a communication to all vice-chancellors on Thursday.

“A multimedia exhibition will be organised around India Gate on September 29. Similar exhibitions may be organised in states, union territories, important towns and cantonments across the country. The institutions should encourage students and faculty members to visit these exhibitions,” the letter added.

The commission has suggested that the students shall pledge their support for armed forces by writing letters and cards which may be produced in both digital and physical format.

“The letters and cards should be shared with PRO Defence and PIB for publicity across various media,” the UGC said.

In the first such action, India carried out surgical strikes on September 29, 2016, on seven terror launch pads across the LoC with the Army saying its special forces inflicted “significant casualties” on terrorists preparing to infiltrate from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

The state political leaders are seen to be on a warning spree.
It was on Wednesday that state BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa made some serious corruption remarks against Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and his father HD Devegowda and alleged the two of looting the state.
Responding to the same, the CM had warned BSY saying that he is the CM and hence would not remain silent if such baseless allegations were levelled against him and his family.

Now, in continuation to the same, BSY has warned the CM of ‘retaliatory action by the centre’ if any action is initiated against him.

“Kumaraswamy should not forget that it’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at the centre and if he takes any action, we know how to retaliate,” threatened the Lingayat strongman.

Soon, youth Congress members staged stir outside BSY’s residence at Dollar’s colony in Bengaluru.
Karnataka has been facing several political ups and downs in the recent times. The state has a coalition government and the coalition partners- the Congress and the JDS have been alleging that the BJP has been trying to topple the three-month-old government by luring the MLAs.

Asia Cup: Afghanistan thrash Bangladesh by 136 runs

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

A disciplined all-round effort saw Afghanistan thrashing Bangladesh by 136 runs in their last group match of the Asia Cup here on Thursday.

Chasing 256, Bangladesh were bundled out for 119.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan picked up two wickets each to hand Afghanistan a comfortable victory.

Chasing a decent target, Bangladesh never looked in the contention as they lost their wickets at regular intervals.

Shakib Al Hasan (32), Mahmudullah (27) and Mosaddek Hossain (26 not out) mainly contributed to the Bangladeshi score. No other batsman clicked and went back to the pavilion one after another, posting single digit individual scores.

Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain scored towards the end but the lack of support denied the run chase.

Earlier, Afghanistan rode on some brilliant batting by Rashid Khan (57 not out), Gulbadin Naib (42 not out) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (58) to post a decent score.

Besides the trio, opener Mohammad Shahzad (37) also played handsomely.

For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan took four wickets while Abu Hider Rony scalped two wickets.

Brief scores: Afghanistan 255/7, (Hashmatullah Shahidi 58, Rashid Khan 57 not out; Shakib Al Hasan 4/42) against Bangladesh 119/10 (Shakib Al Hasan 32; Rashid Khan 2/13)

BSF jawan was honey-trapped by Pakistan ISI via facebook

September 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Simple likes and comments on social media posts from unknown users can be an ISI trap for the armed force personnel as well as common people. The investigators of UP Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) discovered this alarming trend while interrogating the BSF jawan Achyutanand Mishra, who was arrested from Noida on charges of spying on Wednesday.

He has been taken into five-day police remand since Wednesday evening. Mishra was honey-trapped by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) over social media and he was being used to extract crucial information about BSF logistics and troop movement.

Inspector general (IG) of police of ATS, Asim Arun said the BSF jawan was honey-trapped by an unknown Facebook user posing as a woman who simply liked his photograph. The jawan walked into the trap laid by the ISI and sent a friend request to the unknown user, he said. Sources said the Facebook ID that was used to trap Mishra had as many as 90 Indians on its friend list.

Asim Arun admitted that multiple cases of ‘social media trap’ by ISI have been reported in the recent past in which people got trapped through simple likes and comments on their posts by unknown people, mainly girls. He said the ISI trap trend is not limited to the armed forces alone but some common men were also trapped in this manner for recce of important installations and collect crucial information.

Citing a case, the IG said the UP ATS had recently tracked one similar case where a 19-year-old youth from Alwar, Rajasthan was also trapped using the same trick and was interrogated around a week ago. “Similar to the BSF jawan case, the unknown social media user first became friends with the unemployed youth posing as defence journalist of some reputed organisation and asked him to collect information about the armed force movement and logistics. The unknown social media user proposed that the youth regularly work for him for a salary of Rs 4,000,” he stated.

He said the youth was let off as he had not shared any crucial information with the unknown social media user.

The IG said the ISI targets such people who are armed forces aspirants or stay somewhere close to important security and armed forces installations.

Another senior police official said some cases of honey trap were reported where the same trick was used to trap the armed forces aspirants. He said the unknown social media user continued friendship with the aspirants till they got inducted in different forces and then used them to extract crucial information.

He said one similar case was that of an armed force personnel. He said the unknown social media user posed as a girl and promised to marry after being friends with him for over two years. He said the aspirant was in love with the girl whom he had never met and started sharing his training pictures and other details. The personnel was later tracked by the intelligence unit and was terminated from his services, he added.
