BJP believes in hiding the truth: Rahul

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Criticising the proposed amendment to the RTI Bill that will render it “useless”, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday slammed the BJP for believing only in keeping the truth hidden.

“Every Indian has the right to know the truth. The BJP believes the truth must be hidden from the people and they must not question people in power. The changes proposed to the RTI will make it a useless Act,” Gandhi tweeted.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s move to pass ‘The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2018’ “must be opposed by every Indian” he added.

The Centre on Wednesday had said it was considering a proposal to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.

7 arrested in Malaysia for suspected IS links

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Police in Malaysia have arrested seven people for alleged links with the Islamic State (IS) terror organisation, including a man who threatened to assassinate the Malaysian King and the Prime Minister, police said on Thursday.

Four Malaysians, including one woman, and three Indonesians were arrested during operations between March 12 and March 17, Efe news quoted the Inspector General of Royal Malaysia Police, Mohamad Fuzi Harun, as saying.

One of the Malaysians used his Facebook account to threaten to assassinate the Sultan of Johor, who is the current head of state, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and Minister of Religious Affairs, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, saying they do not govern the country in accordance with Sharia law.

The other three Malaysians allegedly contacted or sent money to Malaysian IS militants in Syria and Iraq, or showed their intention to join the extremist groups in the Middle East.

Two of the three Indonesians admitted having links with extremist organizations in Indonesia, while one, declaring himself a follower of the IS, admitted his plan of travelling to Syria to join them.

Around 300 people with links to IS have been arrested in Malaysia in recent years, while about 100 Malaysians are fighting in Iraq and Syria with militant groups.

Malaysia has a population of nearly 30 million, 61 percent of which belong to the Muslim community.

Junior Badminton Asiad: Indian girls shine on opening day

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Junior shuttlers drew mixed response for India on the opening day of the Asia Junior Badminton Championships here on Wednesday.

In the men’s singles affair, Kiran George, 16th seeded, survived narrowly in the first game before hammering his Malaysian opponent Chong King Lingin in the second game to register a 24-22, 21-16 victory.

However, in another men’s singles match, Aman Farogh Sanjay went down against tenth seed Indonesian, Karono Karono 16-21, 21-16, 17-21 after putting up a good fight.

But what had overshadowed other Indian wins was the men’s doubles match in which the two Manipuri boys — Manjit Singh and Dingku Singh — put up a wonderful resistance to overcome their Indonesian rivals Muhammad C. Chaniago and Helmi Abu Hanifa 22-20, 23-21.

Earlier in the women singles, Dipti Kutty, Medha Shashidharan and Kavipriya Selvam found easy opponents in their respective matches as the trio moved into the next round.

While India No.7 Dipti defeated Kazakhstan’s Aisha Zhumabek 21-18, 21-13, Medha thrashed Iya Gordeyeva, another shuttler from Kazakh, 21-9, 21-10.

On the other hand, Myanmar’s Seng Jar Nan failed to put up a fight before Kavipriya as she was hammered 5-21, 8-21 by the junior Indian.

In the women’s doubles match, Nafeesah Sara Siraj and Medha succumbed before China’s Guo Lizhi and Yijing Li 9-21, 18-21.

There was however, complete disappointment from the mixed doubles matches as India lost all the three affairs on Wednesday.

The first Indian pair comprising Srikrishna Sai Kumar and Srishti Jupudi failed to maintain their winning momentum as they lost to Indonesia’s Muhammad Juan Elgiffani and Windi Siti Mulyani 21-17, 13-21, 15-21.

In the second match, India’s Orijit Chaliha and Preerthi Konadam lost to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Chieh and Cheng Yu Pei 15-21, 18-21.

Another Chinese Taipei pair — Wu Guan Xun/Teng Chun Hsun — gave India the third jolt as they registered a 21-17, 21-13 win over Edwin Joy and Nafeesah.

Two Indians in all women South Pole expedition

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Two Indians – a ramp model and a student – are all geared up for an all-women South Pole expedition to be led by a septuagenarian Guinness World Record holder Briton Janice Meek starting end December, the duo said on Wednesday.

Madhabilata Mitra of Kolkata and Tanvi Buch from Mumbai, sitting alongside Meek, beamed with excitement while sharing the details of the expedition, christened “Polar Maidens”, with the media here.

Mitra, a ramp model, and mountaineering instructor seemed awestruck at the opportunity.

“I can’t believe that I am going to the land of igloos, sledges where the days and nights are six months long and I am overwhelmed.”

According to Mitra, an instructor at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, anybody can undertake such adventures if he or she has loads of self-belief.

“When our mind and soul guides us even physical pain seems to be nothing.”

Sharing her excitement, 24-year-old Buch said: “This is an unexpected opportunity and I just seized the chance as this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

A third-year student of Natural Resource Conservation in the University of British Columbia, she would be the youngest Indian to ski to the South Pole if she successfully completes it.

Meek, the 74-year-old adventurer, is “proud of herself to show that age is no barrier”. The other members of the five women team are Denise Martin from Canada, Ailene Crean from Ireland and Caroline Geraerts from Britain.

“Being the driest, windiest and coldest place on Earth, South Pole is the Holy Grail of explorers,” said Meek who has skied to the North Pole twice.

Geraerts is a breast cancer survivor and Crean is iconic explorer Tom Crean’s granddaughter.

About the training required for such a dangerous trek, Meek revealed:”If one can be on their feet for long and have a strong core, they can do it. Just eat well, exercise well and be determined.”

The team will train in Scotland in September.

“On December we will fly from South America and after reaching Antarctica we will be taken to a special camp called Union Glacier, and from there we will head for the magnetic pole. We will only leave our footprints and try to make it the greenest expedition,” Meek said.

According to her, once the entire team gets acclimatized, they will begin skiing with the help of their guide and it will take more than 20 days to cover the 140 miles from a safe zone to reach the South Pole.

“The expedition will inspire a whole new generation of women from our country to take more challenges. Tanvi and Madhavi shall be the face of India in global extreme sports from now,” said Ankita Mitra, Director, KolEevent, a city-based event management agency that is associated with ‘Polar Maidens’.

Amarinder urges Sushma to ensure safety of Sikhs in Afghanistan

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to take all possible steps to ensure the safety, security and well-being of Sikhs settled in Afghanistan.

In a letter to Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday, he expressed concern at the recent bombings in Kabul, besides the earlier series of terror attacks in Afghanistan, that had left many Sikh families adversely affected.

The Chief Minister urged the minister to advise the concerned officials in Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as well as the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan, to ensure the safety and security of Sikhs in the war-torn country.

“Measures aimed at security, relief and rehabilitation of violence-affected Sikh families in Afghanistan needed to be pursued at the level of MEA in order to ensure justice to them,” he said in his letter.

Pointing out that about 40 families had migrated to Ludhiana from Afghanistan in 2012, of which 20 had returned but the remaining were still in Ludhiana, he said: “The issues concerning these families also needed to be attended on priority. This is essential so that the simmering discontent in the community about the fate of these families could be addressed.”

He urged a humane approach in resolving the problems of these Sikh families and requested the Minister to intervene on an urgent basis.

AI-first approach will transform our lives: Satya Nadella

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been “pretty stunning” but what the humanity is going to see soon will be even more profound, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stressed.

Addressing thousands of partners at the ‘Microsoft Inspire’ event here on Wednesday, Nadella said that the potential is for us to be able to turn every industry into an AI-first industry, be it healthcare or agriculture.

“We want to be able to make sure that they can take their data, in a secure, privacy-preserving way, and can work that into AI capabilities,” he told the gathering.

“As we look forward, the opportunity for us to serve our customers in this new era of the Intelligent Cloud and the Intelligent Edge is far greater,” Nadella said.

According to him, Microsoft is going to infuse everything with AI.

“It’s going to have perception capability, language capability and autonomy that’s going to be built into the applications going forward.

“Autonomy is not just about a few self-driving projects. This is about autonomy everywhere,” the Microsoft CEO added.

On its Azure Cloud offerings, Nadella said the computing needs will go far beyond the data centre.

“We are going to take Azure to Azure Stack, to Azure IoT Edge and to Azure Sphere. This is a ubiquitous, distributed computing fabric,” he noted.

Nadella said that Microsoft 365 will help customers have people-centred experiences rather than device-centred experiences.

The tech giant which has touched $800 billion valuation for the first time, was scheduled to release its quarterly results late on Thursday.

Trump offers meeting requests to Rouhani: Iran

July 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani received eight requests from his US counterpart for a meeting, presidential chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi announced on Wednesday.

Vaezi said US President Donald Trump’s requests were made during Rouhani’s visit to New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting in September 2017, according to Xinhua.

He did not elaborate, however, about Rouhani’s response to Trump’s meeting invitation.

In September 2013, Rouhani and former US President Barack Obama talked over the phone during the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly. It was the highest-level contact between the two countries in more than three decades.
