Protests turn fatal, kills 4 in MP : Bharat Bandh

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

A nationwide shutdown called by various Dalit organizations to protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling on amendments under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 has taken a violent turn killing four people in Madhya Pradesh.

The Supreme Court on March 20 had introduced the provision of anticipatory bail in the act while directing that there would be no automatic arrest on any complaint filed under the law.

The ruling drew flak from the Opposition parties and some of its own leaders, who said that it would make the law ineffective.

Even as violent protests were reported from across the country, the Centre on Monday filed a petition seeking review of the apex court’s order diluting the provisions of the act that protects marginalized communities against discrimination and atrocities.

Earlier in the day, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad confirmed that the government filed a comprehensive petition in the apex court which would be presented before the top court by senior lawyers. He said that the government didn’t agree with the SC’s ruling and that there was no intention of changing provision of reservation for minorities.

Meanwhile, a storm of outrage engulfed numerous parts of the country, including Bihar, Punjab, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, which even saw angry protestors taking to the destruction of private and public property to send their message of disapproval to legislature and judiciary.

Below are the updates so far:

Inspector General Law and Order Makrand Deuskar said that four people have died in protests in Gwalior and Morena in Madhya Pradesh.

19 people got injured in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior of which two are in critical condition. Internet services have also been blocked in Gwalior district till 6:00 am tomorrow.

Shots were fired during protests in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior.

Delhi Police is alert. We have adequate police deployment at places and senior officials are also present on the field. All steps will be taken to maintain law and order: Deependra Pathak, spokesperson, Delhi Police on Bharat Band

We salute brothers and sisters from the Dalit community who have hit the streets to demand protection of their rights from the Modi government, tweets Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

One can understand if people protest, but why is opposition playing politics? Parties like Congress who did not give Bharat Ratna to BR Ambedkar are now acting like his followers: Union Minister Ramvilas Paswan.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has appealed all political parties and groups to maintain peace and shun violence.

Informing that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has filed a review petition in Supreme Court for reconsidering of the verdict on the act, he urged the protesters on Monday to refrain from imposing blockades and committing violent acts.

Talking to the media, Rajnath said, “We have filed the review petition in Supreme Court. I appeal to all political parties and groups to maintain peace and not incite violence.”

Amidst protest, the shops were being forcibly shut down by protesters in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun.

A person has been killed in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena while curfew has been imposed in parts of Gwalior and Section 144 (prohibits assembly of more than 4 people in the area) imposed in Sagar.

Protesters were thrashed by police personnel in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut for creating nuisance in the area.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also appealed the protestors not to disturb the law and order.

“The central and state governments are dedicated towards the welfare of backward castes, SC and ST. I appeal to all to not disturb the law and order. If at all there are any issues you can bring them to government’s notice,” Adityanath said.

A scuffle erupted between protesters and Police in Jharkhand’s Ranchi protesting against Supreme Court directive on SC/ST Act.

The protest turned violent in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut and Rajasthan’s Barmer. Protestors damaged cars and public property. While the effects of Bandh has also been witnessed in Delhi’s Mandi House.

In Punjab, the transport and mobile Internet services have been suspended. The educational institutions also remain closed.

The protest spreads out to Agra and Rajasthan. Agitators are seen taking to the streets over the issue.

Protestors stop a train at Forbesganj Junction in Bihar in the wake of protests over the SC/ST act. The band has been called by Dalit organizations across the country.

The effects of Bandh are visible in Bihar where protestors blocked a train and roads in Sonapur area.

The Congress Party on Monday reiterated that the Centre did not present the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Protection Act properly before the Supreme Court.

Party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told ANI, “Of course, a review petition (SC/ST protection act) should be filed and it’s the right of the Government, it is a legal procedure. The basic question is that why they were unable to present the case properly before SC and lost; inquiry is needed.”

The police force has been deployed in Punjab’s Amritsar to avoid unwelcome situation due to the protests called by various Dalit organizations across the country.

China slaps tariffs on 128 US products

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

China has slapped new tariffs on 128 US products, including pork and fruits, worth about $3 billion in response to the duties on imports of steel and aluminium imposed by the Trump administration, its Ministry of Commerce said on Monday.

The ministry said the central Cabinet has decided to impose a tariff of 15% on 120 American products, including fruits and related products, and a tariff of 25% on eight items, including pork and related products, imported from the US.

The decision was a “countermeasure” in response to the US move to slap tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, it said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump had on March 23 signed a memorandum that could impose tariffs up to $60 billions on imports from China and restrictions on Chinese investment in America.

China’s Ministry of Commerce had announced last week that it was considering suspending tariff concessions on 128 categories of US products, including pork, wine and seamless steel tubes, worth $3 billion, according to a report by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The ministry on Monday said China advocates and supports a multilateral trade system, but suspending tariff concession on the US imports was a “just move” to safeguard the country’s interests using the Word Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.

Although in violation of the WTO rules, the US measure, which came into effect from March 23, has severely undermined China’s interests, the statement said.

Despite worldwide objections, the US decided to impose a 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminium from many countries, including China, the Xinhua reported.

China is keeping big-ticket items like soybeans, sorghum and Boeing airplanes for heavy tariffs to counter Trump’s imposing tariffs on Chinese products to reduce about $375 billion trade deficit between the two countries.

After signing the memorandum, Trump had asked China to immediately cut trade deficit by $100 billion.

The memorandum is based on the Section 301 investigation into alleged Chinese intellectual property and technology transfer practices, launched by the Trump administration in August 2017, according to the report.

Japan eyes ‘maximum pressure’ on N Korea ahead of talks

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime minister Shinzo Abe to visit Trump in April to align strategy aimed at Pyongyang giving up its nuclear programme.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced that he will travel to the US in mid-April to discuss with President Donald Trump how to put “maximum pressure” on North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons programme.

In a statement on Monday, Abe told reporters he will visit the US from April 17 to 20 to meet Trump at his vacation home in Florida.

“I hope to have in-depth discussion with President Trump on North Korea and other issues concerning both of our countries over our two-day meeting,” the prime minister said.

Abe said “maximum pressure” is needed, until Pyongyang abandons its nuclear and missile programme “in a verifiable and irreversible way”, Japanese broadcster NHK reported.

Has North Korea won vital support from China before the Trump summit?
The April meeting comes ahead of a planned summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in May.

The announcement of the potential breakthrough meeting set off a slew of diplomatic back-and-forth in the Asia-Pacific region, including a surprise meeting between Japan’s regional rival, China and Kim in Beijing in late March.

The deal to hold a summit followed a flurry of events during last February’s Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, brightening prospects for a dialogue between the US and North Korea.

Abe also said he wants to take up with Trump the long-standing issue of North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens decades ago.

There were an estimated 17 Japanese nationals who were reportedly snatched by North Korea in the 1970s and 80s. At least five abductees returned to Japan in 2002.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Abe will also ask Trump to exempt Japan from the new tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Suga said the two leaders will discuss free trade, “as this is an issue of mutual interest”.

In recent weeks, Trump imposed new tariffs on steel and aluminium products from China, while Beijing hit back with retaliatory tarrifs on US products.

Rajasthan Royals to replace banned Steve Smith with South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

South Africa’s hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen has replaced Steve Smith in the Rajasthan Royals’ squad for the coming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) barred the Australia captain from participation in the league, following his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal and subsequent ban by Cricket Australia (CA).

“The Rajasthan Royals have picked Heinrich Klaasen as the replacement for Steve Smith. The wicketkeeper-batsman was picked for INR 50 lakh from the Registered and Available Player Pool (RAPP) list,” an IPL media advisory read.

Klaasen made his international debut during the ODI series on India’s recent tour of South Africa. He was also named the ‘Man of the Match’ in the second match of the series that India won 5-1
The South African was then rewarded for his impressive show with a T20I debut in the three-match series against India, which the visitors clinched 2-1.

“I am thankful to the Rajasthan Royals for giving me this opportunity and making me part of the squad,” said Klaasen. “It would be my first IPL and, in fact, my first ever visit to India, so I am really excited to be teaming up and sharing the dressing room with some great names.

“I have made it my mission to ensure my performance makes a large impact for my team in the tournament.”

Royals’ Head of Cricket, Zubin Bharucha, said: “We are delighted to have Klaasen onboard. His hard-hitting ability with plenty of options against spin makes him dangerous through the middle of an innings.

“What struck us about Klaasen, other than his ability to strike a ball, was his inherent hunger to make every opportunity count. This is a good space to be in as a cricketer and batsman. We look forward to working with Klaasen to ensure he has a great career in the IPL.”

Smith, meanwhile, was banned by CA for 12 months after admitting to his role in a plan, along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, to cheat by tampering with the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

The CA also banned Warner for 12 months and Bancroft for nine months.

Warner, who was scheduled to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has also been barred by the BCCI from playing in the league. He has been replaced by England batsman Alex Hales in the Hyderabad squad.

In the absence of Smith and Warner, Rajasthan will be led by Ajinkya Rahane and Hyderabad by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson.

Family matters for JD(S)

April 2, 2018 by Nasheman

If Deve Gowda sticks to his plan, he will find it tough to appease his family members
The family that eats together stays together goes the popular saying. But for one of the most powerful political families of the state, the situation is more like ‘the family that contests in the polls together, stays together”.

JD(S) Supremo and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and his son former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy are often referred to as ‘kingmakers’ post polls, but now the biggest challenge before the JD(S) supremo is to see that all is well within the family.
The 85-year old patriarch is struggling to strike a balance among his family members. His recent statement that he is not interested in contesting the Lok Sabha elections next year and instead will field grandson Prajwal Revanna indicates that he sees Prajwal as his successor, who can guard the family’s Hassan fort. Sources close to the family believe that Prajwal does not seem happy with this decision and is keen on contesting the assembly polls. He is eyeing the Rajarajeshwari constituency in Bengaluru, it is learnt. His followers are learnt to have taken on to social media campaigns to express support to the ‘prince’ of the Gowda family.
Gowda had recently asserted that only two from the family (his sons) Kumaraswamy and HD Revanna, who have been in active politics for decades now, will contest polls.
Among aspirants from within the family are Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita, a former MLA, who lost Lok Sabha and Assembly polls. Revanna’s wife – Bhavani – is a Zilla Panchayat member and she also wants to be an MLA, it is learnt. Sources said ever since Prajwal has been given importance politically, supporters of Anita, who are also making attempts to bring her son actor Nikhil Gowda to political limelight believe that if Prajwal is given a ticket, then Anita is keen to contest from Channapatna.
JD(S) workers are also debating why Kumaraswamy recently announced he would contest from Channapatna and Ramanagaram. The former CM had earlier announced he would contest one seat from North Karnataka and another from South (this is why he had rented a house in Hubballi). Sources say this looks like a strategic move from Kumaraswamy. If he were to win both the seats, he may later vacate Channapatna in favour of his wife Anita. During one of the meets, Kumaraswamy had admitted he was under pressure from the party workers to field Anita from Channapatna.
Now, it looks like the total number of aspirants within the family touches six- HD Revanna, HD Kumaraswamy, Bhavani Revanna, Anita Kumaraswamy and then the third generation upcoming leaders, Nikhil Gowda and Prajwal Revanna. The battle doesn’t end here. Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Dr HC Rangappa is all set to contest from Chamaraja assembly seat and he happens to be the father in-law of Deve Gowda’s grand-daughter and also in the race is Gowda’s relative DC Thamanna from Maddur.
